DAY 683

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Posted on: March 6, 2010 - 3:24 am

London, UK                            March  5,  2010                       Fri  9 : 45 PM  GMT

BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts honors two members of the family, Jaya and Abhishek in the evening and that is why we are all here. And having just returned from the formal function am delighted to have witnessed the recognition, offered to them by this very prominent British Society.

Now due to the fact that it is indeed quite late and that it has been an extraordinarily involved day, there is a need to turn in before we turn out. Concept of time and jet lag had started its process of slowing down the system long before, but somehow the commitments for the occasion had to be completed, and so we did.

But still the desire to describe all is most predominant. Time and space and the pulls of the slumberous brigade being strong, I just thought if this were to be a page out of ‘twitter’, how would it sound. Here goes -

Ab jr intrvw good. Jb gets LTAW. Have got yur wishes in mind. Thk u. more ..

AB jr does dinner charity, joins us for dinner later. Good food. Its cold outrside, - 3.

Brought along scripts to read for approval. Shall spend time on them tomorrow.

Work mode getting persevering. Nice. Keeps you on the move. Good exercise and keeps one motivated.

Too many yawns ! Not good at all. Let me recover.

Bye for now ..

Amitabh Bachchan

Celebrated director Mani Ratnam’s highly awaited film ‘Raavan’ is all set to premiere at this year’s International Indian Film Awards (IIFA). The tri-lingual ‘Raavan’ is nearing completion and is set to release on 18th June

Amitabh Bachchan will be reciting Marathi poems at the 83rd All India Marathi Literary Meet (Sahitya Sammelan) on March 28. He will read poems from his father Harivanshrai Bachchan’s classic Madhushala.
Amitabh’s presence will also be significant in the backdrop of his company Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL) producing Marathi film ‘Vihir’ directed by Umesh Kulkarni. He has also expressed the desire to produce more Marathi films.
Sammelan organisers had written to Amitabh 10 days back inviting him. Three days back, convenor of the meet Satish Desai and organising committee member Sudheer Gadgil met him at his residence in Mumbai and requested his presence.
    *****************************************************************************************
Vipul Shah’s schedules for Action Replayy seem to be going awry for no fault of anybody’s. First it was his principal actors’ choc-a-block schedules that delayed the film. Now when the film had just two more songs to be filmed, Vipul is again left high and dry. And it’s not his to question why. Because this time it’s the weather gods who are to blame.
The song was to be shot in Manali. “And who would have thought there would be snow in Manali in February? It has never happened before!” marvels Vipul. “We had planned the whole song schedule for a time when we were sure there would be no inclement weather. When we got to know there was heavy snowfall we were stunned. There was no way we could shoot,” says Vipul who now needs to find alternative dates for the Manali song.
Easier said than done, considering how busy Aishwarya Bachchan and Akshay Kumar are. Rather than delaying the release of the film further, Vipul may drop the song completely. “We shot one 1970s-style romantic number a solo with Shreya Ghoshal. Now we wanted to shoot a song about a couple romancing in winter like Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz in the song ‘Karvaten Badalte Rahen’ in Aap Ki Kasam in Manali.”
Pritam Chakraborty’s brief was to create a raga-based melody, a la the 1970s. Some portions of the track were even recorded with a live orchestra as the composers of the 1970s used to do.
But will this labour of melodious love ever get shot now?

  22. Aniseh, Toronto says:

    Hello Amitabh,

Congratulations to Jaya and Abhishek on their BAFTA Awards..That is amazing! Good for them and great to know that their contribution is being recognized. Jaya’s contribution to cinema has been exceptional and always my favourite over all the years, I am very thrilled for her. I have loved and enjoyed every performance of hers! In times gone by, for years, I would try to look like her, grow my hair long just like hers, wear my sarees like her, and watch all her movies with a lot of anticipation. She was a favourite in my parents home, truly the sweetest!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0AC56j4auQ

No twittering for us Amitabh! Your journals are like prized possessions! To be read and sometimes to be quoted - like i have said more than once, you will one day evolve from Amitabh the actor, to Amitabh the writer. So no twittering. If slumber beckons, goodnight! Post your thoughts in the morning if need be, but you don’t want to twitter. That kind of social media is okay if one wants to just pick things off the cuff, so to speak - but not to be savoured and enjoyed!

So we shall wait patiently until tomorrow!
    :-)

Have no doubt you are exhausted, I always say its terribly hard on you to launch into hectic schedules and attend functions on the day of arrival. But thank you for the partial blog, partial twitter - ‘Blitter’- and I am delighted a good night was had by all and I am sure footage will be available by the morning. Congratualtions for the awards.

Please do rest well, you are in dire need of it. Funnily enough it crossed my mind this evening how uncomplicated life would be for you if you Tweeted and I have to say there is a charm to your brevity too!

Goodnight and sweet dreams my dearest Mr Bachchan. Let script reading be your only reading matter tomorrow and not the blog. You deserve respite from it all.

    Love to you,

Such is my desire for you, Sir and I wish you all happiness forever.

Have a lovely time in London, Uncleji. I am from London, but actually visiting India at the moment, so right now I am feeling a bit dejected that I am “far and away” from you, wish I was in London too, ofcourse we common people do not have the privilege to meet you in person, but atleast to be close to you in mind and soul.

  67. RAVI P MALHOTRA says:

Dear Amitji, Good Morning. Nice description of the evening at Bafta. Thanks for the tweets. The Twitter artists you mentioned somedays back are good at it. The best tweet I must admit till date is concerning cattle class…Whenever I travel by air and pass those empty seats of Business class I feel herded towards my cattle class. I always promise myself that I must do so well now in life that I can occupy a seat in the Maharaja class. The dream vanishes as I see through the window and enjoy the moving clouds. Thinking of so many millions left behind on the ground below in pasteures.
It is a wonderful feeling that your entire family is in focus for one award or the other. It becomes a collective effort. So also it helps you to support many causes. I may say that many years and decades of your works brings you to a situation where every second day you get a chance to pick and pluck something very honourable. Wish you good luck and many more occasions to be celebrating your success. Happiness from success and satisfaction from happiness.
Today subject of my thought process during morning walk was how one gets recognitions when there are organised associations and bodies. One becomes a part of them and contributes. What happens to an individual who has contributed all his life and does not seek any reward. last night when I read about 100 most trustworthy people of India and various analysis a thought ran through my mind why Reader’s Digest did not ask a million readers to post list of 100 most trustworthy persons and then compiled a more accurate list of 100persons. Why impose your pre-selection on the audience and deny fair chance to many others to come in the list. May be there would have been surprises for all concerned. We always shuffle 52cards and then fate is within those 52cards only. Remember then the game is confined to those 52only. It may be unfair to many others who are deserving but unknown. May be the UNKNOWN INDIAN is most trustworthy on whose effort the country runs. A wild thought worth tweeting some brains we trust.
Regards to everyone who contributed to your and Jayaji’s success and somehow I remembered Dharmendraji as a common factor in both of your life.
    Ravi P Malhotra

    2. AMITABH BACHCHAN

    8. AMITABH BACHCHAN
    9. AMITABH BACHCHAN
    10. AMITABH BACHCHAN

How can you just mention “ZANJEER” ? Have you watched SHOLAY, DEEWAR, AMR AKBAR ANTHONY, DON, ABHIMAAN, NAMAK HALLAL, ANAND, MARD, COLLIE, MUKADDAR KAA SIKANDAR, SILSILA, KABHI KABHI, KALA PATHAR, AKHRI RAASTA, KHUDA GAWAH, HUM, BLACK, SARKAR, BAGHBAAN and PAA.

Just go and watch these movie, you will find GodFather, Avtaar as extremely ordinary.

We disagree and protest for putting for the fact that you have named Amitji and you have named just one movie “Zanjeer” ? Infact CNN has mentioned that only 2 asian actors have so far won academy awards. Can you say how many americans have won Filmfare Awards or IIFA awards. If you come with the top 10 best actor of all times, Amitji name will top the list.

It is funny how when you went brief, so did everyone else.

Glad the evening went off well. Some of our crowd were there too. We will hear in detail in the morning.

Am still up trying to fix a dilemma. Do I come to Paris to Champs Elysees to see you in June or give my daughter a 21st birthday party on the only weekend available before she goes to America? She insists I see you as I have missed you too many times. Perhaps I should bring her with me to see you?

    Decisions, decisions. Help, AB!

Hope you rest with the script in the morrow. Loved your tweeting, btw.

To twit or not to twit? Here’s what I found:

    *

    “I’ll do it in 140 words… and rhyme… to a rhythm”

    The Twitter Poem, by @bytefulcom

    *

Twitter: a place where work blurs with play.

Twitter: where I could wander all day.

Being able to talk to all

    Whether famous or reclusive

    Makes using Twitter quite conducive

To networking in ways, previously elusive.

Twitter can save time, replacing email in some cases,

though email still lets you cover more bases.

To me, the Twitosphere is a connection to people instead of just content:

on Twitter you can ask bloggers what they really meant.

As for business, Twitter’s free advertising of course.

That link in the profile can be a driving force.

Yet beyond traffic boosts and Calacanis contests,

at the end of the day we know what is best:

making cool new friends to give life a new zest.

To new Twitter users, I would only say this:

give it some time, you may find net bliss.

  92. Jasmine Jaywant says:

Good morning, Amitji. Thanks for connecting with us, even if it was to be for a few minutes, before you went to bed. We will wait for your longer description of the events. Please do put up some pictures as well. I am sure it was a wonderful ceremony, and you and your family looked fabulous. What a precious moment it must have been for you.

Heartiest congratulations to Jayaji and Abhishek.

Once upon a time in India, when a child was born, the elders would bless her/him by saying, “Bada ho ke ma baap ka naam roshan kare.” You have done just that, not only for your parents but for all of India. India ka naam bhi roshan kiya hai aapne. Your achievements are so extraordinary and on a scale that is enormous. It truly is larger than life.

And now Abhishek is doing the same. May the tradition continue for generations to come.

Enjoy your stay in London. It was so good to see the yellow gold strewn about. Just a tiny sprinkling, but still felt good to see it.

And please no twittering — do continue to write in detail. Love your long posts, the leisurely descriptions, the thinking aloud, the reminiscences, the nostalgic wanderings down memory lane, the soul-searching, the introspecting, the sharing of your thought processes, the philosophical discourses…love them all. The more the better. Less is not more where you are concerned.

    With love and regards, always,

    Jasmine Jaywant

  94. Marsa says:

    Pranam Sirji,
My humble advice, the film fraternity, the upper echeleons of Bharat and the socially/financially classified rich. Please stack the wealth out side of India if you want to have your kins enjoy them forever, for, our country in our lifetime is going to be divided into as many states. Google as already removed parts of Kashmir and Arunchal Pradesh from it’s maps for India. 90% of states are affected with territorial or terrorism issues. Our combat inventories in all form and space is vastly deteriorated to be readied for a battle. So called Friends through diplomatic efforts are ready for collateral damage. Politicians, Media and citizens alike have succumb to capitalism. 60yrs of Independence and ready to bite the dust.
A Gandhi among today’s bravehearts is hard to find, please, for our children have your conscience get going.
Else, there won’t be freedom of expression of any form left to enjoy your achievements.
    It’s already more than alarming.
    Marsa

  101. abhaya says:

    Respected Brother
    Sadar Charan Sparsh

It is great to see that BAFTA did honor Jaya and Abhishek.. a recognition from anywhere is always good.. the one from BAFTA is specially more so..

Your attempt twittering was quite good.. no, no, I do not have any reasons to please you even if some AZ thinks that I do so to degrade his position or standing.. it is all right.. he is allowed what he wishes to think of me, you and him.. I have nothing against anyone.. nor do I have to explain myself unless really required.. threatening someone is out of question especially if someone calls one his elder brother.. he remains as dear to me as he may not understand.. despite that nasty phone call.. and subsequent writings here or in form of the SMSs.. AZ please live in some peace.. I am no competitor not only to you but not to anyone on this earth.. think positive.. that is the key to one’s happiness.. if one does not accepts the abuses from another they reflect back onto the same person.. so be very careful when you speak over phone especially if you are also recording it for some reasons.. God bless you..

Brother.. there is no reason for me to take back my comments about the DAE/BRIT incidence.. though I did request AZ to get rid of them.. it is all right.. I haven’t reported anything silly.. have valid fears in the light of the times we are living.. the incidence does appear to be simple burglary case and the culprit has been nabbed as well.. yet some reporters had completely wrongly added their own stories to it in the press.. that is nothing new.. yet in such sensitive matters the press must be more careful and maintain some sanctity and keep away from rumors.. I am slightly less scared of the event..

The Hockey team now has to only play for pride.. do not believe in the kind of permutations and combinations that media is building about India’s prospect.. though for me.. semi-final is not the end of the road.. an improved world standing at the end of the tournament would be an achievement good enough.. and I must admit here that boys in the blue have been performing to their abilities if not beyond.. that in itself is some consolation.. if India could beat England which I seriously doubt they would probably be standing a chnce to feature in top six Hockey playing nations of the world and that would be no mean achievement by any standards.. so Sandeep, Shivendra, Sreejesh go ahead an d do your best.. I would eve love to see more action from Rajpal, Arjun and Pillay they have been playing good Hockey and even if they fail to win against England it would not matter so much.. we have witnessed a surge of interest in the Hockey and for this we must thank the FIH for holding the prestigious world cup event in New Delhi..

I also read the views of Dr. Manmohan Singh about his dialogue with Pakistan.. I fully support his view.. No, no, I am not a staunch supporter of any political system I only acknowledge a good deed and stand on the matter.. Dr. Singh is perfectly right when he says that maintaining distance has not helped our cause.. maybe the talks could some day initiate a better understanding between 60 year old rivals..

Love Affection and Respect as always
    Abhaya Sharma
PS AZ send this SMS to me - You have written you won’t let me sleep like.. ” applause, for writing before ME to defend/shield yourself.. My MOTHER always tells me - ” IF OTHER PERSON DOES SOMETHING EVIL, BAD OR HURT YOU, IF YOU DO THE SAME THEN WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “YOU” & HIM/HER..” From: amitabh ziibbu 09.01 PM 05/03/10

  112. Aishwarya, TVM. says:

    Dear Amitji,

I am finding it really difficult to keep up with the places you write to us from and all the awards you and yours keep receiving - mindboggling! Congrats to all of you and wishing you all many many more accolades in future.

Twitter. Been there, done that - not my cup of tea. Couldn’t condense my thoughts into 140 letters and when I tried, it didnt make sense to me, much less to the receiver! A funny oneliner says “Twitter - the brain laxative.” So does that mean its meant for those who are mentally constipated?! Gross.:S

Keep on with these long wonderful posts, Amitji. Nobody writes like you.

    Lots of love,

    Aishwarya.

I think you are an expert at twitter already. If you came on twitter, I would never leave my computer!!!

Here are my tweets to you:
Good 2 hear U enjoyed the function.

    Congrats to JB and Abhi.

Thanks for connecting even with the jetlag.

Glad U enjoyed the food but sorry for the cold.

Good luck with scripts and happt your working and exercising.

Please rest up and recover. No more yawns-only smiles.

Anyway, I just saw a double feature at the Victor Fleming festival and the author of a new biography on him introduced the film ‘Red Dust’ with Jean Harlow and Clark Gable. The second film, ‘Bombshell’, you would like because it’s the ultimate comedy about the public relations department at a movie studio fabricating completely false stories about its star played by Jean Harlow.
‘It’s not what you want to read. It’s what the public wants to read’.

I’m looking forward to reading further details about the function once you have fully recovered from your jet lag and long day.
    Love,
    Rochelle

  117. Sarban says:

    Mr. Amitabh Bachchan:

After my short association with the b big blog, I have come to
the conclusion that it is certainly not meant for the serious-minded.

You write your daily diary, give vent to your joys and sorrows,
thoughts and feelings, and having thus indulged and relieved
yourself, enjoy a good night’s sleep. Obviously, it is catharsis
or release of your tension. Good for you.

What do your fans do? They lap up what you write and indulge
themselves pouring out senseless comments and happy to see
their name in print in your blog. I wonder if you ever have the
time or patience to read the ‘feedback’.

It’s double monologue going on - repeat no dialogics, no
interesting interaction between you and commentators - but
double monologue. It satisfies your ego and it satisfies their
    lust for public recognition.

At the best, this blog is meant for those who wish to keep
posted with what you are thinking, planning or actually doing
on a daily basis. Who must such people be? Teenagers, idlers,
    net-addicts - who else?

When I happened to read your daily diary, I was impressed with
your command of the language as also with the maturity of your
thoughts. Certainly, one can benefit from reading them - at least
    occasionally if not always.
But I suppose you have to think of ways and means to make the
blog even more attractive. As I suggested to you, you need to
somehow distinguish between meaningless and meaningful
comments and respond to the latter as frequently as possible.

It has NOT to be a one-way traffic Mr. Bachchan if you want your
blog to be long-lasting, sensible and attractive one. Make your
fans and readers your partners in a joint quest for truth and peace.
Don’t treat them as consumers of the kind that swallow tele-serials
and Hindi films without any means to react or protest.

I’ll wait for your response and if it is not forthcoming, I’ll bid goodbye
to your blog. Of course I’ll continue to respect you for what you are:
an intelligent and cultured man and a good actor in whose veins flows
    the Sikh blood.

    Best to you
    Sarban Malhans
    Patiala

I can imagine proud one feels on the achievements of family members. After certain poeriod of our life , we go to back stage and our children take front stage, They become the centre of our attraction, energy and activities.

I use to wonder in my early days why my papa us eto talk about us ( his children) in social gathering and use to call me to make me meet wit his knowns,

Out of respact i usually tried to mix up and talk. I found he get immense satisfacion.

I can coorelate better now after becoming father my self and feel the pride in our kids achievement.

My god bless abhi and ash.

wonder no mention of air hostesses-yes now understand–in presence of Jayaji you wont even look at pretty faces–you disappointed them . You could have thrown glances at them with that trademark smile of yours-

APPEARS EVEN HOSTESSES DID NOT DARE TO COME NEAR YOU AS YOUR GUDDI WAS WITH YOU.
DON’T TAKE SERIOUSLY FRIEND—COLOR OF HOLI HAS NOT COME OFF COMPLETELY.

  157. Daisy M says:

    Dear Mr Bachchan

I am not in the slightest surprised you were feeling whacked by the end of the evening… the amount of travel and jetelag you endure is totally beyond my comprehension.

I am too brain dead myself to emulate your twitter speak so shall say in boring old prose… Bafta was a wonderful occasion for the audience… Abhishek gave a wonderful interview - so thoughtful and modest yet shining with intelligence and humour and his trademark delightfully spontaneous and witty ripostes. Some fascinating insights into his own work and the nature of Indian films too. And I particularly enjoyed his Guru train story, among so much else.

He has patently inherited both superb talent AND temperament from both you proud parents watching in the audience. And I loved it when you joined him on stage for yet another proud moment when Jayaji received her Lifetime Achievement Award and had the whole of the delighted audience misting up as she spoke.

I’m pretty certain everyone can watch this happy evening soon on the BAFTA website, as it was being filmed, presumably for webcast as usually happens with these events..

Abhishek twittered that the event was an honour for the Indian film industry - as a spectator it felt like a wondrous tribute to the entire Bachchan family too.

I loved your virtually silent but utterly inestimable part in the proceedings. FmXt.. you should have heard the excitement that rushed through the audience as they realised that the ALL FOUR actor Bachchans were entering the hall to sit in the audience (or on stage in Abhi’s case). And the joyful recognition and delighted appreciation that marked every occasion that Paa Bachchan appeared in a film clip and each time Abhishek made his many a glowing reference to his Father throughout the interview. It was beautiful to behold.

And let me share another favourite moment with FmXt….at the end when Jayaji was on stage, somewhat overwhelmed at the standing ovation from the audience, Mr Bachchan came up with a beautifully timed line of his inimitable humour. Jayaji was wondering aloud what she could say, and with impeccable timing Mr Bachchan dryly offered helpful words of wisdom to his wife .. perhaps first you should ask them to sit down. Might not sound so great in my account.. but it was the way he said it with such gruff charm.

Okay enough of the memories of last night … and fondest wishes for today and the fervent hope that you strike gold in them there scripts..

    With love from Daisy

Select music composers for your forthcoming films carefully.
The present tribe of composers is good for nothing.99% of their songs are heard as long as the film is in theaters.
    My suggestion—Nadeem-Shravan—Anand-Milind or Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

GOOD BACK GROUND SCORE AND SONGS ARE AN ASSET TO A FILM.

I sincerely wish i could convince you to campaign for Anurag Foundation- They work in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand for kids affected by thalassemia. We need to plan a nation -wide campaign to promote testing of beta thalassemia carrier status of every Indian. This would be the only way we can change the situation; 10,000 + thalassemia major children being born every year. I sure don’t want to sound impertinent and educate you on the subject, but please let me know if i could send across any information on the issue. I had written to you previously about Teen Patti. Dunno if you read it.
I really wish your role had been kept similar to Kevin Spacey.
The mean manipulative professor was integral to the script.
I thought you were good in the movie but being the ‘ good’ professor diluted it.

It was getting colder and I gave up as my legs were killing me as well. I am most upset that I have missed out on seeing you. I had rushed there with high hopes of meeting you and they were fatally dashed. I also went home feeling stupid for having wasted my time.

    Dated: 5.03.2010.

Dear Amit……………Hi………..Welcome to Mumbai back………I am addicted to your blogs and thoughts…………it is a excellent example of collective thinking a powerful tool for a celebrity of your dimension…best wishes…………son.

THE POWEROF COLLECTIVE THINKINGFrom time to time, (the) tribe (gathered) in a circle. They just talked and talked and talked, apparently to no purpose. They made no decisions. There was no leader. And everybody couldparticipate. There may have been wise men or wise women who werelistened to a bit more—the older ones—but everybody could talk. The meeting went on, until it finally seemed to stop for no reason at all aridthe group dispersed. Yet after that, everybody seemed to know what to do,because they understood each other so well. Then they could get togetherin smaller groups and do something or decide things.—David Böhm, On DialogueBöhm had shared with me in London an explicit mental model of the way hebelieved the world works and the way he believed human beings learn and think. To Böhm it was clear that humans have an innate capacity for collectiveintelligence. They can learn and think together, and this collaborative thought canlead to coordinated action. We are all connected and operate within living fields ofthought and perception. The world is not fixed but is in constant flux; accordingly, the future is not fixed, and so can be shaped. Humans possess significant tacitknowledge—we know more than we can say. The question to be resolved: how toremove the blocks and tap into that knowledge in order to create the kind of futurewe all want?By 1983, Böhm was devoting much of his time to exploring this issue ofcollective thinking and communication. Over the next ten years a significant
————————————————————-of progress would be made toward understanding this entire process, whichBöhm simply called “dialogue.”In May 1984, what was intended as a weekend seminar consisting of lectures anddiscussions developed into what Böhm called “the awakening of the process ofdialogue itself as a free flow of meaning among all the participants.” That weekendmarked a sort of watershed in Bohm’s work on this subject and is documented m thebook Unfolding Meaning.Although development of a theory of dialogue was far from complete, by 1994,in part because of the work of the Dialogue Project at the MIT Center fotOrganizational Learning led by William N. Isaacs, dialogue began to be seen as abreakrhrough of major significance in a number of emergent fields of humanactivity: in organizational learning, in the process of collective inquiry, and, significantly, in the way humans might govern themselves. As mentioned previously, die word “dialogue,” as used by Böhm, comes from twoGreek roots, dia and logos, suggesting “meaning flowing through.” This stands in starkcontrast to the word “debate,” which means “to beat down,” or even “discussion,”which has the same root as “percussion” and “concussion”-—”to break things up.”Böhm pointed out that a great deal of what we call discussion is not deeplyserious in the sense that there are all sorts of things which are nonnegotiable—the”undiscussabies.” No one mentions the undiscussables—they’re just there, lyingbeneath the surface, blocking deep, honest, heart-to-heart communication.Furthermore, we all bring basic assumptions with us, our own mental maps, about themeaning of life, how the world operates, our own self-interest, out country’s interest, our religious interest, and so forrh. Our basic assumptions are developed from ourearly days, our teachers, our family, what we read. We hold these assumptions sodeeply that we become identified with them, and when these assumptions arechallenged, we defend them with great emotion. Quite often, we do this unconsciously.Böhm likened these basic assumptions and deeply held convictions to computerprograms in people’s minds. These programs take over against the best of intentions, and they produce their own intentions. This fragmentation of thought is reinforcedby a world view inherited from the sixteenth century, which saw the cosmos as agreat machine. Thus, “ordinary thought in society is incoherent—it’s going in allsorts of directions canceling each other out.”
—————————————————————————But if people were to think together in a coherent way, it would havetremendous powet. If there was an opportunity fot sustained dialogue over a periodof time, we would have coherent movement of thought, not only at the consciouslevel we all recognize, but even more importantly at the tacit level, the unspokenlevel which cannot be described. Dialogue does not require people to agree witheach other. Instead, it encourages people to participate in a pool of shared meaningthat leads to aligned action. As Isaacs and his research group at MIT confirmed, outof this new shared meaning, people can and will take coordinated and effectiveaction without necessarily agreeing about the reasons for the action.Böhm compared dialogue to superconductivity. “In superconductivity, electronscooled to a very low temperature act more like a coherent whole than as sepatateparts. They flow around obstacles without colliding with one another, creating noresistance and very high energy. At higher temperatures, however, they begin to actlike separate patts, scattering into a random movement and losing momentum.” Indialogue, the goal is to create a special environment in which a different kind ofrelationship among parts can come into play—one that reveals both high energyand high intelligence. As I look back on the research and development Böhm did on dialogue duringthe last years of his life, it’s been interesting for me to note how the principles heformulated were consistently playing out during the course of the Forum program: atthe fellows’ orientation, where they gathered initially to become acquainted;through the wilderness experience; at the midcourse retreat; during the hard work ofthe class project; and at the closing ceremonies as well as the postgraduation classretreats. The shared experience and deep trust developed in the wildernessexperience allowed the fellows to enter into dialogue in a variety of circumstances,in small groups as well as much larger ones. After a couple of years of theseexperiences, I could sense the “field” forming as we entered into true dialogue. Thisdistinct and special feeling would fill the space around us, and at these times I knewwe were communicating on a different plane. It was unmistakable. Most oftenduring these times I would say or contribute very little; I would be deeply involvedin the communication, listening and absorbing what was happening. Each timethese were powerful, moving, and extremely special experiences for me and for theothers involved.
    —————————————————————————-
At cimes, dialogue was used to resolve complex issues facing the group, such asthose revolving around their class projects. Invariably the conversations would betedious and frustrating, particularly to the kinds of action-oriented, get-it-done-todayindividuals making up the classes. But often this process would lead to coordinatedaction that resulted in highly important contributions to the community involved. In other instances, the dialogue would not have a strategic focus, but would yieldimportant results at a later date. Out of the collective listening, important new insightswere gleaned. The fellows reported to me time and time again deep personal changeflowing from the ongoing dialogue that was sustained over the course of the year. When a particular dialogue was “completed,” it was not over. Dialogue was not asingle circumstance in the program, but turned out to be a way of life with thefellows—a way of life to which they became committed. It had a transformationaleffect upon many of die people. Repeatedly, fellows would refer to the “mysteriouspower of the collective” they would experience. It’s a funny thing about dialogue: there’s a wave/particle-like aspect to it. Whenit’s present, you know it. You can’t fake dialogue. Yet when you focus on it too hard, and try to capture the process, you change it, and it collapses and vanishes. There were times that dialogue was used in another special way—tocommunicate the power of the ALF experience to potential major funders. Wewould convene a group of the fellows to tell how ALF had touched their lives andthe lives of their communities. I stumbled onto this process one evening in Houstonwhen I invited one of the key officers of the Ford Foundation and his deputy to adinner and meeting with a dozen or so fellows. What ensued after dinner was anuninterrupted three-hour dialogue among the fellows. The people from the FordFoundation found it to be one of the most moving experiences they’d ever had.One of the most important times this occurred was in 1988 when we wereseeking funding from the Luce Foundation in New York. We had a number ofmeetings with the Foundation executives at Luce, which resulted in a site visit toHartford by Henry Luce, Jr. We invited a dozen fellows to attend lunch anddialogue with Mr. Luce and his colleagues.John Filer, Chairman of the Aetna Insurance Company, opened theconversation with a beautiful set of remarks, calling the group assembled “a
    ———————————————————————
magnificent coalition of the unalike.” I then suggested that the fellows might wantto share with Mr. Luce and the other officials of the Luce Foundation what theycould about the Leadership Forum, what it meant to them personally, and what hadoccurred in the community as a result of the establishment of the chapter. We hadnot rehearsed or planned ahead for any of this. A long silence ensued andeventually one of the fellows spoke up.Eddie Perez described a Leadership Forum project in Stow Village, a publichousing development with over a thousand people, mostly Latinos and African-Americans, living in abject poverty. People there felt hopeless and defeated. Most ofthe residents were single mothers with several children. The project objective wasto take fifty families and construct a program through which these people couldattain economic independence through substantial employment. It seemed like amassive undertaking, but this class of fellows wanted to test the momentum, theexcitement, and the vitality that had been brought to bear within that group.Eddie told how the program had begun and how it was progressing on manyfronts. He said that it was being hailed as a model that could be replicatedthroughout the country. Indeed, a separate group was attempting to replicate theprogram in two other public housing projects in Hartford. Eddie said that one of thekeys to the success was the strong linkage between the business community and thepublic sector. There were several brick walls presented that needed to be torn down, and it was the people with position and power in big business that could make ithappen most quickly. He cited the following example: The project had progressedsubstantially. A number of the women had gone through the job skills program, transportation and child care had been arranged, the women had learned how todress appropriately for an office environment, and job positions had been secured—not just dead-end jobs, but jobs with a real future for advancement and personalsatisfaction. Everything was set to go, and then the brick wall was hit. The newemployers’ insurance would cover the worker, but for the first year, the medicalinsurance would not cover the entire family. It would be too cost-prohibitive, andthe policy would not allow it.These women simply could not afford to go to work and leave their childrenwithout medical benefits. The welfare program provided this, but, at least in theinitial stage of work, the employers could not. Eddie worked and worked and couidfind no way around it. Finally, in desperation he picked up the phone and called Jim
—————————————-Grigsby, a fellow from his ALF class. Jim headed a billion-dollar division ofCIGNA, one of die largest insurance companies in the world. When Eddie called,Jim’s secretary took the message and politely told Eddie that Jim had been out oftown for quite some time, and it would be a very long time before he could get backto hun. It was the kind of polite brush-off that secretaries are taught to give. That afternoon, Jim came to his office and was met with a huge stack of pinktelephone slips. He flipped through them and toward the bottom he saw Eddie’s callslip. It said, “Eddie Perez,.ALF, needs help. Please call.” That same day, Jim returnedEddie’s call, and the conversation went something like this: “Eddie, Jim here. I’mreturning your call. What can 1 do for you?”"I need to come see you. We’ve got a crisis of major proportions on the StowVillage Project, and I really need your help.”"Well, why don’t you just tell me over the telephone, and we will see what wecan do.”Eddie told Jim the story, and Jim said, “Eddie, I’ve got it. Eve got the picture.Give me a week or ten days to see what my people can do, and I’ll be back to you.”Within a week, Jim called Eddie back and said, “Eddie, I’ve got the problemsolved. Here is what we’ll do.” And he proceeded to tell him how he found a wayfor the business to be underwritten. Eddie looked at Mr. Luce and the others, andhe said, “Listen, a year ago, if I had placed a call like that to Jim Grigsby atCIGNA, I wouldn’t have gotten past his secretary. There’s no way he would havereturned my call, and there’s no way we could have solved that problem. I’m tellingyou that we are all members of one community here, and we are all out to helpHartford. The right people are connected now. We in the neighborhoodcommunity know how things operate, and we know how to get things done, but wecan’t get them done without the cooperation of people in the power structure. Weneed their help, and we need it sometimes very quickly. The American LeadershipForum makes that possible.”And that’s the way it went around the table. The fellows, each in their own way, told of the transformation that was taking place in the Hartford community. Eachtold a personal story and each built on the other’s story. When there was a briefsilence, another fellow would interject a word, a few sentences, or a story tounderscore the point being made. No one talked over the other. Later the fellows
    ——————————————————————-
observed that they were listening to others saying their own thoughts. The flow ofconversation built and built. Each statement, each point, each story dovetailed andreinforced another. It was like the weaving of an intricate, beautiful tapestry—as ifthey were speaking by design—but of course there was no prior rehearsal. The flowof meaning was incredible. The group was working as a whole, and there wascommon participation in chinking, as if it were one thought being formed together. And you could feel the whole room fall into this symphony of convetsation. As Iwitnessed this unfold, I thought back to the way Bill Russell described thosemoments when he was playing for the Celtics.John Zacharian, the editor of the editorial page of The Hartford Courant, toldabout his successful campaign to add the first African-American member to theadvisory editorial board of his paper. Hernán LaFontaine, the Superintendent ofSchools, told of rhe jobs program that he and fellows from his class had instituted toprovide placement for two hundred unemployed youths who were graduating fromthe Hartford high schools. The program was taken over by a unit of the Chamber ofCommerce and continued to be highly successful. This was only made possible byrhe joint cooperation among school leaders and neighborhood leaders and copbusiness leaders, who could insure that the right kind of job opportunities weremade available.Bernie Sullivan, the Chief of Police, and Meri Ice Milstead, a local labor leader, told of how they had first met when Chief Sullivan had incarcerated her during thecourse of a strike in Hartford. For years, there had been violence and bloodshedduring these strikes. The next time Milstead and Chief Sullivan met, they werefellows in the Forum Class I. By the end of that year, they had agreed to do thingsdifferently. When the next strike occurred, Milstead called Chief Sullivan and said,”We are getting ready to strike. Let’s do it che way that we agreed.” Chief Sullivanwent to his men and said, “There’s going to be a strike ted by Merilee Milstead. 1want us to go out chere and keep order, but leave your riot gear at home.” Theywent out. There was an entirely peaceful strike. No bloodshed and not oneincarceranon. An absolute first in many years. Around the table che stories went;one after another, just like that.At the end there was a long but comfortable silence. Then Henry Luce stood upand said, “I knew 1 would be impressed with this program because of what I’d read
————————————————————–about it. But I was not prepared for what I encountered here. You will receive oursupport.” Within two months we received a $450,000 grant from the LuceFoundation, the largest public affairs grant that the Luce Foundation had ever given. What occurred in Hartford that day with Henry Luce and his colleagues was anexercise in collective leadership. These men and women sitting in dialogue togetherwere exercising a collective form of leadership that simply cannot be provided by asingle individual. Over the years I’ve thought more and more about this notion ofhighly effective leadership. I’ve come to believe that this is at the heart of what isneeded in the world today. When people sit in dialogue together, they are exercisingleadership as a whole. This is nothing less than the unfolding of the generativeprocess. It’s the way that thought participates in creating, but it can only be donecollectively. This is not something I fully understood during the days I wotked with ALF,even though I witnessed this powerful phenomenon time and time again. The waywe generally thought about it as we were designing the progtam was that parts areprimary. In a coalition-building model, our tacit assumption is chat we’re separateindividuals, and we have to build a coalition. We usually do that through variouskinds of trade-offs and deals—hopefully “win-win” kinds of arrangements that wecan all live with. But in dialogue, you operate with a very different premise, actually, a completelydifferent frame of reference. In dialogue, you’re not building anything, you’reallowing the whole that exists to become manifest. It’s a deep shift in consciousnessaway from the notion that parts are primary.People always say “We have to step back and see the big picture here,” as if wehave to go from seeing the parts to constructing a whole. But the whole alreadyexists; it’s just that we’re locked into a frame of reference that keeps us fromperceiving it. In dialogue, the whole shows up and is manifested by individuals lateras they take action.
——————————————————————-seeing things whole” amounts to an inner shift in awareness and consciousness.Martin Buber captured this notion beautifully as he was reflecting on what thismeans between people:Just as the melody is not made up of notes nor the verse of words nor thestatue of lines, but they musr be tugged and dragged till their unity hasbeen scattered into these many pieces, so with the man to whom I sayTfiOM. I can take out from him the colour of his hair, or of his speech, or ofhis goodness. I must continually do this. But each time I read your blog it is collective thinking of your net family…………..in nutshell………….

    Love you………………..Birbal.

Good afternoon. I hope you are going through those scripts and getting further into that motivating work mode now.

You brought smiles to so many while in London, to those seeing you and to those who got the replies.

It’s just as well, because my smile is getting even scarier since last night while having dinner with my father and uncle, 2 crowns next to each other fell out of my mouth. So now I’m missing teeth on both sides and will be gumming my food this weekend.

I’m looking forward to the moblog working again. You used to update us on how the day was going sometimes, and I look forward to that again. Sometimes 24 hours is too long to wait.

Hello Amitji!! This is my first post.

I was at the BAFTA event last night in the fourth row and was thoroughly surprised to see you there with your whole family. Abhishek is wonderfully witty and incredibly charming. The experience was so surreal as we all idolise you and your family and to see you all in the flesh was awe inspiring.

My father managed to get your and Abhisheks autograph for me before you left for your dinner engagements - many many thanks, they will be treasured.

Congratulations to Jayaji for her LTAW - a long time coming.

You have a massive following in the UK and it would be wonderful if you could do something like this again so that the average joe can pay hommage to their childhood idols and future stars.

Not to forget your stunning daughter in law, Ash. She is more beautiful in the flesh and I loved how she was poking Abhi when Jayji was receiving her award - incredibly cute/sweet and just goes to show that you are a wonderfully normal family.

I would loveto hear from you but understand you have a very busy schedule.

  261. RAVI P MALHOTRA says:

Dear Amitji,Good Evening. A very interesting question asked by my friend Gurvinder Singh.
    Are we adulterated?

As I grow older something’s seem to get easier and some more difficult.
One of the things that got more difficult was making friends.

From the time I was in Kindergarten till I left school, friendships were
spontaneous, effortless and uninhibited. Friendship was joyful and genuine.
It mattered not whether they were rich or poor, or what religious beliefs
    their parents held.

My play partners, companions and friends mostly enjoyed my company and I
theirs. Disagreements took place all the time, but were quickly forgiven and
more readily forgotten. Fights may have left scars on the body but not in
the heart. I wanted for nothing, and we shared what we had willingly.

I remember that in the ninth grade I left boarding school to become a day
scholar in the same Bishop School.
A great pleasure for me was, at each weekend cycling from home to school
carrying a large quantity of tasty Parathas prepared by my Aunt for my
    famished boarding school friends.
I had even forgotten about this until my friend Abbas reminded me recently.

In college it was still easy making friends. Friendships were still born out
of the voice of the heart but I also started using a bit of my brain.
Exposure to new and wicked pleasures normally numbed the mind.
Once the novelty wore off, I made a new set of friends. These were people I
had developed a healthy respect for. These were folks who challenged me to
make me a better person. Many still remain good friends

Being a Punjabi and a Sikh, we are used to being jovial, big hearted, and a
little crazy. I like to believe I have a good sense of humour, a large
encyclopaedia of jokes. These are all the ingredients to be popular and to
    make friends.
I realised son enough that humour is a great thing, particularly if you can
    laugh at yourself.

Once I was working professionally befriending people was easy, after all I
had become practised at it. However the friendships were often less than
genuine. Hidden agendas with manipulation and exploitation often
overshadowed genuine likings. At this stage befriending people with a view
to exploiting them is understood and accepted. Maybe it’s a social thing.
During the most dynamic period of my career genuine friendships mostly
eluded me. Many ‘friends’ were customers and professional associates.
The period when I work hard I liked to party hard. Party animals, and
partners in vice were the preferred ‘friends’.

    Here is a question;
What is the difference between men and boys?
    ‘The cost of their toys”.

When you party too hard or are having too much fun it begins to bother your
parents. My parents wanted to get me married at the earliest.
Dad kept saying that youth in the heart and body, time on hand and money in
the pocket was a recepie for trouble
I kept refusing to get married until I met Mohini, then I was hooked.

They say ‘A man is incomplete until he gets married, then he is finished.’

After marriage, making friends got extremely complex, marital couples have
to be normally friendly in pairs. Rules of friendship at this stage are
    formal and are confusing.
I soon learnt that the visas for my bachelor friends to my home were
cancelled. This was inevitable because they had distractive and
inappropriate tendencies like getting inebriated, and running wild and
    speaking the truth.

Hey! Boys will be boys, doesn’t cut it here at this stage.

As our children grew up all the pair friends were the parents of our
children’s classmates. This is a passing phase and has no real impact in
most cases. However, some become so dear that they are still considered as
    part of our family.

Once I had achieved some degree of professional success, I began to think no
end of myself. I could not enjoy genuine friendships.

Isn’t that a shame that material success often makes people so pompous and
    often insecure?

I thought a lot about these things and decided to put down my thoughts to
    paper (computer really).

    * Why do we change?
    * Why do we stop trusting, loving or befriending?

I like many others bandy about terms without really pausing to think what
they really mean. What did I understand by the term friendship?

Putting on an act of being someone else is pretty exhausting. Deception is
often short lived and corrodes the soul gradually and certainly.

In my dictionary, ‘A friend’ is someone with whom you can be yourself.

I found an interesting correlation between age that is becoming an adult and
getting adulterated. I believed I was getting less pure with age.
I looked up the dictionary and found the meaning of the words ‘adult’ and
    ‘adulterated’.
Adult comes from the Latin word ‘adultus’ meaning grown up.
Adulterated from the Latin word ‘adulterare’ meaning to corrupt.

The more I aged the more adulterated I became.

What caused this corruption (or adulteration)?
I wonder if any of you have thoughts on this. If you have then it will be
    interesting to hear from you.

    Dear Sir,

Jaya ji has a standard of her own in terms of her values, her beliefs. The Bachchan family may have made its mark in terms of fame and popularity and the level of attention it commands at all times on and off screen but Jaya ji throughout the years has maintained her simplicity in terms of her style. If I found her to be very shy in her early days, I find her to be a highly confident woman now. She has much to be proud of in terms of her devotion to her family. A pillar of strength for the rest of the family. Well done Jaya ji to you as a woman and an actress. God bless you.

Abhishek continues to do well - with his family’s love and support and blessings by his side and not least the adulation of his fans. God bless him and Aishwarya.

Besides your devotion to your own family Sir, you have this larger extended family or your FmXt and you remain connected to us no matter what the situation or the time or the place.. like a mother would to her children. For that I remain grateful to you.

Tomorrow my siblings and their families are coming over for lunch…it is about time we got together as one large family. It has got to be done, we have got to de-stress from the pressures of work. One asks oneself…do I live to work or work to live? If I am feeling under-the weather, all I need to do is turn round and think of those in Haiti or for that matter the children living in slums…As much as I remain grateful to God, I sense a certain level of guilt at their conditions..I dont know why I am terribly missing my bunny Shamu today. I think I am all over the place today. I look forward to seeing my family tomorrow…why dont you all come over for a meal too Sir? That five star hotel where you are staying, what do they know about Indian food?

With lots of love to you and your family,
    Daksha

They do it until now may be 50 years since she left Bhopal. In Srilanka, Abhimaan is shown frequently (almost alternate month)on their government national TV network.

Not feeling good today. Your post the other day in which you talked about the regretful feeling of not involving the elders in day to day jobs. Going through that stage now. Me and dad having huge differences on the way the family business should be run and of how to tackle the future progressions, if any. These differences often result in my negativeness displayed all over my face and body language. This leads to arguments. I want him to be involved but our communication level is soooo low. I dont kno. Feel so negative. Wrong state of mind to be in.

I SAW HIM FIRST TIME IN 1970 WITH RAVI SHANKAR AND HIS FATHER ALLAH RAKA. THIS ZAKIR WITH HIS TABLA IS SO WONDERFUL AND FROM THIS TIME I WAS WAITING MOMENT TO SEE HIM AGAIN (AFTER 36 YEARS) SO I AM ALWAYS WAITING SOMEBODY; I SAW MICHEL POLNAREFF IN 1966, 1971 ( IT WAS IN REIMS AND WANTED TO BRING ME IN PARIS BUT IT WAS “MY IDOLE” AND I WAS SO SHY AT THIS TIME AND SO STUPID ” I SAY NO ” A BREAK DREAM LIKE WITH R.S. I SAW HIS AGAIN IN HIS FRENCH “TOURNEE” IN 2007 AND IT WASN ‘ T POSSIBLE TO SPEAK TO HIM AND TO SAY SCUSE ME FOR MY STUPID ATTITUDE.

    Hi angel Amitabh,

Congratulation to Abhi and Jaya Ji.

I am on temporary disability since 5 weeks and shall be for more 4 weeks.

I decided to watch all the movies of yourself I haven’t seen yet…

I stated with Saat hindistani followed by Reshma aur shera,Sanjog, adalat and
    Imaan dharam…

I wanted to watch Imaan Dharam for special reason…
That you mentioned once in interview before Black that the most challenging scene you have ever done was from Imaan Dharam in post mortem scene, However I personally was not as impress as from your other performances in movies like Deewar and Muqddar ka sikandar….

    Art works are unbelievable….

Sad that you were not able to honor personally to Shashi kapoor,But may be In other award function.

Enjoy your stay here and maybe I will spot you somewhere local!

I wish we cold pull it off - as an art project - somehow!

    Dear and Respected/poojya Amitji
I watched NDTV awards 2010..(I have recorded that bit in which you appear and watched with amazement the humility and brilliance and keep watching it to be more and more inspired).and the one gem I mostly adore/respect is you…How proud your parents may have been, how proud all of India is of you and particularly NRIs like me…..Oh bliss ,eternal bliss it is our Indian society for being an icon from the Indian society and I like to prove your father wrong even in naming those brilliant letters into your name..because even the words may think they are not enough to describe your greatness….I like to think you are par excellence and there exists no word to describe your exceptional charisma..
Living abroad I have seen/met western celebrities but none so far like you …I havent had the fortune to meet you though…

    Best wishes
    yours sincerely

    Dear Amitji,

Since schooldays I am your fan. One day in 1980s some one told us that you are going to shoot in Versova, and for a thirst of desire to meet you, we went all the way from Vile Parle east to the place to get a glimpse of yours. But unfortunately we were told that the shooting was cancelled.
I have a desire to meet you once far a little while and to shake your hands. Daily morning I pass your residence at 9 am on my way to office, but without fail see your house, with a feeling that you may be having your breakfast or may be reading newspaper. It would be a last wish to meet a great person like you.
