DAY 631

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Posted on: January 13, 2010 - 12:36 am

Prateeksha, Mumbai                      January  12,  2010                     Tue  11 : 44 PM

One of the respondents corrected my blog by pointing out that I had mistakenly put the time as AM, when it could have been PM. I have of course changed it. The continued habit of writing the post way after the midnight hour has accustomed the brain to put AM.

As one grows older one notices many such incidents creeping in. The need to go into another room to fetch an object required for work or for use, will indeed take you to the other room, but as you get there you discover that the reason to be there has disappeared from your mind. You may be wearing your spectacles on top of your head for easy access later on, but when the time comes to use it you look for it through hill and dale, until someone pulls it off your head and thrusts it in front of you !!

In the privacy of your room or home this would not be given much attention, but when it appears in public, the repercussions could be quite severe. Many attribute this to the coming on of an illness, one that robs one of memory. But the brain uses just a third of its capacity during a lifetime. Why then would it destroy that one third of what is left of it. Or simply put if it uses only a third of its capacity and that is what is getting destroyed, why doesn’t the balance two third lying waste take over and protect a portion of its ailing portion.

Think about it .

An ailing injured well wisher and fan has a day fulfilled when he comes up to meet me and reminisces an old old meeting, years ago. There is this issue of the personal visit to their city New York and the desire to spend time with them. There is Shiamak Davar and his idea of doing dance to poetry, my Father’s poetry. We shall consider pretty shortly. It is in line with what many others have wanted to do but not had access to the decision making bodies. I believe they are better off now ; they have a sympathetic countenance and good suggestions. I remind him of the cultural nature of our meetings and the essence of ethos and aesthetics in what we do. He is excited and so indeed must we be. I tell him it is not something unique. There have been attempts in the past by several cultural groups to do similar. They were good. But Shiamak desires that once done it can then be encapsulated and deported anywhere any time. Interesting.

I had mentioned some time back of the interest shown by the theatre of ballet near the Champs-Elysees of Paris and the possibility of me reciting my Father’s works through sub titled theatre. Well, that seems to be fructifying now. The lady organizing the event flies down in a few days to meet and discuss creatives. This must be considered as an important agenda on my programme. The glory of my Father through his words, through my presence, through to Paris !! Exquisite !!

And then within a short while later the creative discussion for a son et lumiere at Jalianwala Bagh in Punjab. Jalianwala, that historic moment in the history of Punjab nay the entire country during the freedom struggle. That enclosed garden where hundreds of innocents were gunned down brutally by the British in one of the most dastardly acts of inhumanness. Innocents that had gathered with family and young children to celebrate the festival of ‘Baisaki’ - a prominent day in the calendar of sacred events. Mercilessly killed and shot by General Dyer and his troops that deliberately blocked all exits so no one would escape this massacre !

So a commemoration to that fateful day in the Holy city of Amritsar. Amritsar the city of the Golden Temple, the most sacred and prominent place of worship for the Sikhs.

We study the creatives and decide to do it in and before February 15, 2010 in order that there is sufficient time to prepare for its release on the anniversary of that day, the day of Baisakhi, April 13th.

Many are perhaps unaware that I have given voice in Hindi and in English to several such enterprises - the Gwalior Fort, Golconda, Tirupati, Khajuraho, Amer Fort, Jaipur and now this. There is a son et lumiere at each of these locations and I feel proud that I was able to contribute some part of myself for the good of the nation, for its prestige !

The evening was set for the press release of the promo of Rann and a conference to follow. It was interesting and quite voluble. Since the film was about the media and electronic to be precise, there was a great amount of apprehension on how the media would take to it. But even though 90% of the questions were related to what the film was ‘actually’ about I thought the press was unbiased, strong and not willing to give up so easily. They took all that was needed to be said firmly on the chin and asked some really interesting questions. I would like to believe that all was well with the evening.

Back soon after the PC to the office to conduct creatives for the shoot tomorrow for Colors. I now play their Brand Ambassador for their release in UK and USA. A coming of a complete circle. Not so very long ago we were all there to launch another TV channel, TV Asia, a first. And now a brand ambassador for Colors -

“अनवरत समय की चक्की चलती जाती है …”

The wheel of time keeps moving on. Another moment from another classic from my Father.

Sailesh Gupta, scion of the family that owns the ‘Dainik Jagran’, the largest portal paper  ’Jagran Yahoo’ in the world, about 5.5  crore world wide in Hindi, is there in all his finery. A conference of their staff to be addressed by the scion of another prominent family, moi. It is in Lankawi in Malaysia. The debate or let me say the lecture is on ‘Determination’, an attribute they feel secure in describing me with and hence my required presence there. Glory be !!

Glory be ! Glory be ! O Lord above me … may this be  !!

Amitabh Bachchan

  4. Mary Anne says:

Hi Mr. B. I had to laugh when I read your description of “old age forgetfulness”, a malady that I also “enjoy”. I like to think of it though in other terms. That being that my brain is simply too full of more important things, than those mundane oft forgotten annoyances. Have a great day! Love and admiration, Mary Anne

  5. Phyllis (PB) in Texas says:

oh no, it said 25 comments, now only four show up, and that wonderful comment about Lohri by Tilak Rishi at #5 has disappeared!

Very interesting, the manner in which these projects are “convergence” projects, taking the essence of two varied arts. Seamless synthesis.

Phylllis– the pleasure is all mine. You- and Jasmine and Valorie- have made me re-think my blog reading strategy. No more write-and-run. :)

  10. rochelle says:

Maybe the unused portion of the brain is so out of practice that it cannot detect the mistakes made by the rest.

I assume the Paris event is the one I have a ticket to but I don’t know if I should make the trip in my circumstances.

I join that well wisher in an invitation to New York. Hopefully I can borrow some of the time to spend with you.

I think that son et lumiere must be a light show. It sounds like a great cause to lend your voice to.

I’m glad the media behaved and reacted well to the promo release and press conference. I look forward to seeing some footage.

I have TV Asia. I hope that means Colors will be added too. That would be awesome.

You are the perfect person to lecture about determination.

It was a relief to finally see your post. I’m glad you’re in a better mood.
    Love,
    Rochelle

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,

To find an answer to your query, I guess my brain will have to function at optimum capacity.

Dance to poetry is a good idea, and Shiamak Davar would be able to do complete justice to it.

I’m dying to record the reactions of the media once ‘Rann’ is released.

    Regards,

    Melwyn

    Dear Lion King,

Just the other day I was commenting about how good the moderation on this blog is. If this post does not get through I may have to eat my words.

Great to hear about your forthcoming trip to Langkawi, It is a beautiful tropical place made up of numerous islands (99 I think ) in Malaysia, I love it. They have indeed chosen a scion and rightfully so.

Wonderful to hear that your father’s work will take a new form. Have you considered Shobhana and Mallika Sarabhai as an alternative to Shamak? Please do.

Looking forward to Rann, hope you and your team have taken all necessary steps to guard it against the evil buccaneers.

    Sir,

Since I was a kid, I have always been your fan. Of late, I discovered the gems of Jaya Ma’am’s performances in films like Guddi, Shor, Mili, Abhimaan, Hazaar Chauraasi ki maa, and Kora Kagaz, of course. (it’s sad, I discovered them so late at the age of 30, as I used to find old movies boring earlier).

Sir, how about including a message from Jaya Ma’am? How about asking her to pen down her experiences with Hrishi da and with other ace directors of the yore?

Please please please do something about it, I would love to read from her.

With warm regards to you and your lovely and talented family.

    Dear Boss,
Just moved from the Caribbean to the US and hadn’t gotten a chance to check your blog in the last 48 hrs but will catch up through “previous posts” :)
I am just amazed at the number of things you have on your agenda, lined up every single day of your life….
Not that I hope for it to happen but in all honesty, a little memory error is the least that could happen to an individual who goes through all that you do….
And we all should be and are thankful to you that, you still take your precious time out and attend to this purely non-legal “obligation” of yours if I may call it..
I admire that! Not many… naahh…. nobody would do it with the commitment that you do…. and that is one of the zillions of reasons that people like me and many many others come religiously and check what your thoughts may be for the day…
There is love… there is hope… there are wishes in abundance… all for you Sir!
    Sincere regards,

I HAVE TRIED TO POST SEVERAL TIMES LAST NIGHT AND MANY MANY MORE THIS MORNING SINCE DAWN … NOT A WORD HAS APPEARED… WHAT IS GOING WRONG???

    Dearest Mr Bachchan

My, the Blog was a hungry cookie monster last night AND THIS MORNING, devouring soooooo many comments.

So many activities you plan… the Paris poetry excites me deeply and I already have my ticket, along with others from FmXt. Your father’s work glorifed in Paris, with your exquisite presence in the magic air of this city…. aaah yes, utterly unmissible.

One thought was raised by Jasmine of London, and it would be wonderful if this could be considered while creatives are discussed.

There are plans for sub-titles (or possibly sur-titles, as they are called in opera, if they appear above the stage).

The theatre say that these will be in French, which is only natural and proper. But that is certainly going to be a test of my linguistic (lack of) abilities!

I wondered if the theatre could also release printed sheets of these translations, so that we could study them very carefully before (and after) the performance, as once the reading begins our eyes may be on you rather a lot of the time rather than the scrolling titles.

Also, and this may be asking too much, could any kind of English translation also be made available on paper… as I feel this cosmopolitan event may attract others from Europe (and even America) whose French and Hindi are both inadequate.

No matter if none of this is possible… the joy will simply to be there… and experience such a hallowed event. I am already counting the months (only five now…)

And please please PLEASE keep us posted if the talk of a cultural event with dance in New York comes to fruition. This is a city I always desire to visit, as I have friends there, and am already planning a trip this year.

With all my love and excitement, Daisy
PS and could the bi-lingual illustrated version of Madhushala also be on sale in Paris?? Pretty please???

I have stayed up all night and watched ‘Do Phool’. I think what little works in my brain was too tired to completely follow some of the confusing plot. Sometimes my mind can’t even remember what happened earlier in a film and where are the other two thirds of my brain to fill in?

I was there for the dancing to your father’s poetry at Avery Fisher Hall. I have one piece of advice. In the future, please don’t sit anywhere on the stage to watch it because even when you’re on the side of the stage, it’s hard to watch anything else happening up there.

The wind is howling outside and I’m going to bed now
    Good night.
    Love,

    Respected Amit Ji,
Firstly I like to say thanks for posting of your father’s poem. Really it’s a great achievement for me to know the feeling of great poet. I also read so many time poem of “Evergreen poet Bachchan Ji” through indian poet webstie. Still facing deep problem of word meaning. As you know of “MADHUSHAALA” , it’s a great poem, I tried several time to find out the meaning, but when i’m getting the right meaning in next totally puzzled with these word “AALA, HAALA & etc.”

In this reason I met with poet “Sri Ganesh Narayan Shukla” to find out the right meaning then he told, He is a close friend of “Sri Harivansh Rai Bachchan” [When your father was alive, yrs 2003].

So plz, if you have time clear to me these words meaning is most important for me to think deeply about poet feeling. I’m also writing a poem that’s why need to know.

For your acknowledge I’m leaving my some poem’s line.

    Dear AB,

Worry not about senior moments. They happen to me too and I bet my brain is totally new, unusued and smells like a brand new notebook! I would pay no attention to those that over-react; their treasure is different than mine - which is brain.

Dance on your father’s poetry is a nice concept and I think Shiamak’s talent will do only justice to it. Looking forward to when it’s released on DVD.

  120. Jasmine of London says:

Good morning my dearest Mr Bachchan,

Quite a cluster of nuggets in the form of new projects ornamenting the horizon; I just cannot ascertain if you are truly ready and pleased with them, but hope your enthusiasm is authentic. Certainly presenting a lecture on ‘determination’ is absolutely apt ‘pour vous’; you have certainly written the unpublished book on this attribute! Coincidentally determination was originally in my list of your attributes in yesterday’s comments, but I removed the word thinking it still was not worthy enough to use for you.

Yes, the poetry recital at la Champs -Elysees, Paree will indeed be an exquisite summer celebration of your fathers lyrical magic, a night to be remembered and one I have no intention of missing…

I have been in touch with the infuriatingly lack lustre venue organisers on a few occasions over the past few months regarding altering seating arrangements so some FmXt may be nearer one another. The saga continues, with true “cool as cucumber - I’m in no hurry to be of assistance chic” and a final decision on the matter rests tentatively in their beautifully French-manicured hands.

It’s worth mentioning, that I discovered the sub titles are in French, perhaps putting many of the non-Hindi speaking audience members travelling into Paris for the event at a disadvantage. Perhaps this could be rectified for them at your request. Its hard to imagine how utterly heartbreaking it would be for them to be so close, yet unable to understand the beautiful words!

And I have previously presented my supplications to you, for the new Madhushala book to available for purchase on site, should there be any remaining copies in the world by June. It would be the perfect keepsake memento for the perfect evening, until the next project illuminating your fathers works comes to fruition.

Wishing you the best of luck for the shoot with Colors today, there is seemingly a lot of TV work slinking into your schedule, which must be nice for diversity. But how many Brand’s perforce can one solitary person champion! You truly are the ‘face’ and emblem of the nation and I am sure this is a pleasant prospect for all.

Pleased the blog related issues seem to be resolved. I will return soon to complete about Rann etc. But as always hope, in earnest that you are in the best health and spirits and wish you a productive day.

In anticipation of my love reaching you through this medium…

    Jasmine
    xx

Have bright and a cheerfull day.

    Dear Amitji,
I had heard about your blog, read about it now and then from the Newspapers. But it was only yesterday and today that I read your lines. Each word and each line has been dropped with value and experience of a lifetime! Your lines about your great Father shows the signs of immortality…that all men, at some point of time, strive or attempt atleast to wish for!

My two little darling daughters who snuggle with me every night, this Winter, with fear of having a bad dream written on their faces reminds me how much they need us… and make me wonder and how long can we go towards the future for them and through them…

Its a great and great to be just alive…whatever and however it may be.

    with regards,
    Dr Swasticharan

  134. Daksha says:

    Dear Sir,

We all remain at the mercy of continued habits regardless of age. I am not young myself but have often misplaced things and can’t remember what I did with it. When it comes to handling keys, I have been frowned upon many times by my husband. At times I have put them in a place/compartment so safe and secure that I cannot find them later! At such times, I dread my husband asking me “where is the key?” He gets a blank look. He refuses to take his eyes off the keys in case…

I have just looked up on the internet details about your visit to the Theatre des Champs Elaysees. I have forwarded them an email for more details as the website has been unable to translate French into English. Right now I have no idea whether I shall be able to go. I keep an open mind.

You shall be visiting Amritsar to commemorate those who lost their lives at the hands of the British troops. If only times and deeds could be reversed. Such cruelty.. I suppose you will also have the opportunity to visit the Temple…You yourself have connections with Punjab and I am sure it will bring peace and comfort to all concerned.

The lecture you will be giving on “Determination”…what better example to quote than your dedication/commitment/determination to connect to all that come here everyday!

    Glory always, blessings always!

    Love,
    Daksha

This vast subcontinent senses the bounties a peace dividend can deliver to its people yet it recoils from claiming a share. The natural impulse would be to break out of the straitjacket of stated positions and embrace an ideal that promises sustained prosperity to the region, yet there is hesitation. There is a collective paralysis of the will, induced by the trauma of birth, amplified by false starts, mistrust, periodic outbreaks of violence, suspicion, misplaced jingoism and diplomatic doublespeak. Hypnotized by their own mantra, the two states are reluctant to move towards normalization until certain terms and certain promises are kept. The name of this program is Aman ki Asha so pleas give your comments on there website so the people of PAKISTAN & INDIA will come little close you have toomuch parstar in both the country.if you have time so pleas give me a reaply.i working in UAE.THANKS AND ALLAH APP KO AUR ZYADA ZINDAGAI AUR KUSYAYA DAI AUR APP HAR TAMANA KO PURA KARI. Hello Sir
I am one of your those big, hardcore and die hard fan. so much so that I can bet with almost everyone about anything of yours. I hev seen all of your films right from Saat Hindustani to Paa. Many of your films I have seen more than 10 times. All of your films are absolutely fantastic, matchless, but I would like to name a few which are really outstanding. I would like to say that Agnipath was my favorite, I have seen it about 14-15 times, especially the one with changed voice. Then others like Main Azaad Hu, Hum, Aakhiri Raasta etc were too good. The earlier ones in the era of Muqaddar ka sikandar, Lawaris, Amar Akbar Anthony, Nasseb, Parvarish, Deewar, trishul etc were treat to eyes. And Paa is the icing on the cake. You are not one of the finest actor ever produced by the world, but the only finest actor under the sky. No one can compete you sir, you are matchless, miles ahead of all other combined. I think everyone else is copying you. My one of the biggest wish is to see you personally, but for a person as common as me, it is too difficult. I tried to enter many a times in KBC when u were hosting it, but lines were too busy all the times, as I was fighting against millions of your other fans. I waited outside Prateeksha many a times but all my efforts were failed. I am trying to see you personally since last 20 years but hopes are still there, let us see when it can be fulfilled. There is not a single day passes in my life since last 30 years, when I do nat take your name, or quote u someway or the other, so much so that my freinds, call me BAchchan ka fan more then my original name. You ar enot only the best actor, but best human being, best son, best father, best husband. For Indian film watchers you are the God. I can bet that people take the name of Amitabh Bachchan more then the name of Ram, Shiva, Ganesha combined together. You are a phenomenon. If a see-saw game is palyed by keeping you at one side & the whole film Industry of last 100 years on one side, the plank of your side will be heavier then the other one. Or for that matter if we add, all the hollywood then still u r heavier then the combined might of of all Stallon’s, Willis’s, Godfather’s etc etc. You are the king og Bollywood sir, hats off to you. May god give a looooooooooong and healthy life. Hope to see you seen in my this life time.
The super fan of Super star.

    Dear AB,
I must confess that I was not happy over the choice of Akshay honoring U at Screen award and it was not doubting act of his sincerity and two-way fondness but surely doubting his public speaking skill. But in all my jest to see U get everything best I forgot one simple truth of life and that is, real affection can do miracle and can’t be replaced by any other skill. Akshay with all his genuine affection for U, delivered the best speech I’ve ever came across. It was from the heart, simple and innocent. How truthful he was in saying that U keep giving to others all the time and no one can deny that. Akshay really made my day and I wish U could convey my best wishes to him for this.
Now, what U are going to give us after Paa from AB CORP?

Listening to you live at Champs-Elysees is going to be an exhilarating experience. I have heard many recitals of your father’s poetry by various artists, but your lyrical performance is utterly brilliant!!!
I know that there are many of us who have already booked their tickets and have made their travel plans for this event.

I have been to the son et lumière during St. Andrews festival in Scotland few years ago and I must admit that it was one of the most amazing soundscapes that I have experienced so far. The relationship between artwork and structure, light and surface, object and subject were truly spectacular. It is great to know that similar aesthetic attention is given to the culture and heritage in India as the son et Lumière provide an amazing immersive experience of images, music and the spoken word in the open air.

    Live in Glory!

    Hi Jasmine (# 120) ,

Unbelievable! As I was writing my last comment I had the exact same thought of suggesting Mr. Bachchan to arrange for the revised version of Madhushala to be made available at the theatre. Perhaps, few hand signed copies would make the event all the more special.

It is indeed disturbing to know that there will be no English subtitles available, though I had presumed that this would be the case as the Champs –Elysees website offers very limited navigation options in English. I got quite frustrated with the whole online booking process and was even more disappointed with the torrid experience I had with the poor service attitude of the organizing staff. Guess, I wasn’t the only one. I do hope that our dear AB would be able to harmonize the (sub titles)situation.

    Love

    Dear Mr. AB,

This line of my friend has been a consolation to me whenever I find myself in a room with no idea what brought me there: It’s not when you don’t know where your keys are that you need to worry; the concern starts when you don’t know what they are for.

It’s good to see you brimming with energy and plans. All your upcoming venues will be sheer delight - I hope there will be many lucky EF to see each of them. No US appearance on the horizon, sadly…

Excitement about Rann is building - can’t wait. Thank you for always giving us something to look forward to!

    Love,
    Renate

Tilak Rishi - I saw and skimmed your comment at #5 and decided to read it later, when it sadly vanished. Would you mind posting it again? I would have gone to the Stanford event if I had known about it earlier - thanks for mentioning it. Perhaps next year.

  176. Jasmine of London says:

    My dearest Mr Bachchan,

Hoping the Colors activities came together very well for you today.

Regarding your AM/PM typo.. Absent mindedness has little to do with age. Overload, fatigue, dehydration and simple disinterestedness at times cause my brain to freeze. I have what you call a ’selective memory’, it never imbibes mundane matters, yet ravenously retains all things superfluous. I do remember when you previously revealed that ‘post-it note’ reminders occupy vulnerable spots in your home and office and yes, I took the tip but cannot say its effective. One simply gets used to ignoring the yellow patches too!

There is a therapy called Neurolink. The principles practised claim to repair the connection which gets broken by age and geopathic stress, between the brain and affected area - believing the brain alone can heal anything. Plausible. But please do not be concerned about diseases Mr Bachchan, you are far, far from that with God’s grace.

Delighted the press were fair and relevant in their line of questioning during the Rann press conferences; at least this does make a laborious process easier for you. Noticeably those niggling anxieties about the film being a ‘media bashing’ expose are still prominent when the electronic articles come out though! Those very words are bandied about everywhere at the moment, but I suppose it does not harm the film, the audience would not lose interest in the slightest. Indeed there are some very thought provoking issues raised through your promotional work, which should transform the way the public perceive and use the media forever! Perhaps that IS their anxiety after all!!

Looking forward to seeing all theses projects unfold although it seems as though more travel is on cards too. I have to tell you that struggled to stifle a giggle when I translated the exact words to your father’s pertinent line about the ’relentless mill run’ in light of the juxtaposition - under a lengthy list of your imminent duties! Prophetic words indeed, that truly is modern life we desperately need more of your father’s observations to get us through!

Hoping the day has been pleasant and productive, take care Mr Bachchan.

“TRADE TALK- ‘3 Idiots’ Brings Cheer, Other Idiots Don’t!
    January 2, 2010 by TFSJ
What a brilliant end to an otherwise bad year! The Hindi film industry couldn’t have asked for a better or bigger blockbuster than 3 Idiots to end year 2009. So huge is the business of the Rajkumar Hirani film that this film alone has changed the complexion of the year gone by.

Instead of the industry posting a net total loss of around Rs. 455 crore in the films released during the year, the figure has been brought down by around Rs. 75 crore, thanks to 3 Idiots alone.

In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the combined profits of the other successful films released in 2009 were the same as the profit in one 3 Idiots alone!

As against the gain of Rs. 150 crore (Rs. 75 crore in 3 Idiots and another Rs. 75 crore in films like 2012 – Pralay Ki Shuruaat (dubbed), Love Aaj Kal and a few others), the film industry lost around Rs. 530 crore in the remaining releases of the year, resulting in a net loss of Rs. 380 crore. Of the combined loss of Rs. 530 crore in the approximately 220 loss-making films that hit the screens in 2009, at least Rs. 450 crore was posted by some 30 big-budget and/or star cast and/or big banner-backed projects.

Among the handful of successful films of 2009 was at least one blockbuster from Hollywood – 2012 – Pralay Ki Shuruaat (dubbed from the English film 2012). For the price at which its distribution rights were sold to distributors, it yielded revenues which doubled their investments and, in some cases, gave even more profits. Slumdog Crorepati, the dubbed Hindi version of the Hollywood film, Slumdog Millionaire, released in the first month of 2009, also made money but the profits in 2012… were far greater. Another Hollywood movie, Avatar (dubbed from the English film of the same name), came in the last month of the year but its business was also not as encouraging as that of the dubbed version of 2012.

In a way, the year belonged to Marathi films. The only genuine silver jubilee of the year was a Marathi film, Mi Shivajiraje Bhosle Boltoy!. Also, India’s official entry for the best foreign language Oscar was another Marathi film, Harishchandrachi Factory.

If more than 90% of the Hindi films released in 2009 lost money, there were two major reasons for this. One: content was substandard. Secondly, cost of production of films was too high. In other words, both were counter-productive to revenue generation. Since content was below even the average level in many cases, the run of the movies in cinema halls was dramatically reduced. It wasn’t rare for films to be discontinued from cinemas in the middle of the first week itself.

That is to say, there were dime a dozen examples of films losing their breath at the box-office in a matter of five, four, three or just two days! Never in the past has the run of so many films been aborted midweek in the first seven days as in 2009.

As far as the costing issue is concerned, the films released during 2009 were mostly those that were started in the pre-recession days. Before the economic slowdown set in and affected the film industry as it did most other industries, stars and technicians had been demanding obscenely high fees. Of course, not all stars have slashed or reduced their prices after recession, but things aren’t as bad today as they used to be in 2008. As the prices of stars and technicians like directors and cameramen were unreasonably high then, the cost of production of the films released in 2009 was unrealistically high. To recover that kind of cost, the films needed to actually run for longer periods and more weeks in the cinemas. That means, there was that much extra burden on the films to perform at the turnstiles. With poor content on the one hand in most cases and heavy costs on the other, the films couldn’t but fail.

In that respect, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan are far more intelligent than, say, Akshay Kumar. Unlike Kumar, the two Khans seem to believe in the live-and-let-live policy. They, too, charge hefty fees but while they take a reasonable amount upfront and the balance as a percentage share in profits, Kumar takes a huge chunk upfront. That is to say, a good part of the remuneration of the two Khans comes if and only if the film makes a table profit and it comes from that profit. On the other hand, Akshay usually takes a heavy payment as his fee irrespective of whether his starrer recovers the cost on its sale to the distributors. Reportedly, Akshay is also going the Khans’ way now.

At the rate at which films have flopped in the year gone by and considering the magnitude of losses in films like Blue (around Rs. 35-40 crore), Victory (total loss), Kambakkht Ishq (roughly Rs. 20 crore), Short Kut (nearly Rs. 20 crore), Luck (about Rs. 10 crore), Luck By Chance (around Rs. 20 crore), What’s Your Raashee? (approximately Rs. 25 crore), Do Knot Disturb (about Rs. 20 crore), Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna (about Rs. 35 crore), Acid Factory (nearly Rs. 15 crore), London Dreams (about Rs. 25 crore), Aladin (more than Rs. 15 crore), Kurbaan (nearly Rs. 25 crore) and De Dana Dan (almost Rs. 15 crore), it is imperative for producers to bring down their costs. That, of course, would be possible if the stars and technicians did their bit by demanding less. If they don’t, they’ll be the real idiots of the industry. And idiots who don’t bring cheer in the industry like 3 Idiots!

  204. Tilak Rishi says:

    Dear Amitji,

While wishing you Happy Lohri once again, I wish to resubmit hereunder my earlier comment on Lohri festival, which was posted on #5 but disappeared. This I’m doing in deference to comments by Phyllis (PB) in Texas (#5) and Renate (#175):

    Lohri Is The Liveliest!

Lohri is much more than a festival in our family. It is the day to cherish the most cheerful and lively time we had with our mother alive. Her greatest happiness was hosting guests, friends and relatives, the biggest gathering of them being for the Lohri festival. For her, this was more than just a festival, it was also an example of a way of her life, hosting as many guests as would come and enjoy her hospitality. A true believer in the age-old saying that God visited us disguised as a guest, this was the festival when God blessed us with His presence in full force.

In the evening, with the setting of the sun, huge bonfire was lit in the front yard of our house. Family, our friends and other guests gathered around the rising flames, circled around the bonfire and threw puffed rice, popcorn and peanuts etc. into the fire as offering, told funny anecdotes and sang popular folk songs. Mother would distribute ‘Prasad’ comprising five main items: til, gajak, jaggery, peanuts, and popcorn. The traditional dinner of makki-ki-roti and sarson-ka-saag was then served around the bonfire. Throughout the day besides cooking the special cuisine for the festival dinner and making preparations for the big night, mother would keep busy with generous distribution of money and winter savories to enthusiastic children who went from house to house singing songs and asking for offerings for the festival. My wife, my mother’s best friend after our marriage, and a true follower of the traditions my mother believed in, helped her throughout to make the festival most memorable for all with festivities and feeding that went on till wee hours.

Next to her love for Lohri and hosting guests, my mother’s most favorite hobby was going to movies, a must every Wednesday when it was ‘Ladies Only’ matinee in most theaters at half the normal rates. All her friends had open invitation to watch the latest movie, where she would not only buy them tickets but also treat them to sodas and snacks, which were sold by hawkers inside the hall during interval. She enjoyed all movies, musicals and mythological, comedies and tearjerker tragedies, with no exceptions. She would even watch some movies, which she liked most, many times. Veer Zara, for sure, would have been one such movie, had it been released in her lifetime. The movie, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee in the leading roles, had the loveliest Lohri scene with Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini in guest appearance, singing the mood- lightening and fun-frolic Lohri song . A frothy number about the male-female teasing, the song and the sequence would have been immensely liked by my mother and all those who appreciate Punjabi folk:

Lo aa gayi lohri ve,bana lo jodi ve
kalaayi koyi yun thaamo,na jaave chodi ve
Jhoot na boli ve,kukur na toli ve
jo tune khayeen thee kasme,ik ik todi ve…

Veer Zara’s above scene tells the true picture of what Lohri is all about, especially as seen in Punjab’s prosperous countryside. Amidst the freezing cold weather, with the temperature wobbling between 0-5 degrees Celsius and the dense fog outside, everything seems stagnant in the northern part of India. However, below the apparently frozen surface, you would be amazed to find a palpable wave of activity going on. People, especially in the northern Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and parts of Himachal Pradesh, are busy making preparations for Lohri — the long-awaited bonfire festival — when they can come out of their homes and celebrate the harvesting of the Rabi (winter) crops and give in to relaxing and enjoying the traditional folk songs and dances. Lohri is a festival of zeal and verve and marks the culmination of the chilly winter. Dances are one of the most fun loving aspect of Lohri celebration. Punjab is a land of exciting culture, myriad images of swaying emerald green fields and hearty people whose robust rustic dances that reflects unique camaraderie and bonhomie. Lohri dances are very much a part of the heritage of Punjab. Bhangra and Giddha are the most popular form of dances performed by men and women on Lohri. Logs of wood are piled together for a bonfire, and friends and relatives gather around it. They go around the fire three times, giving offerings of popcorns, peanuts, rayveri and sweets. Then, to the beat of the dhol (traditional Indian drum), people dance around the fire. Prasad of til, peanuts, rayveri, puffed rice, popcorn, gajak and sweets is distributed. This symbolizes a prayer to Agni for abundant crops and prosperity. Lohri is also an auspicious occasion to celebrate a newly born baby’s or a new bride’s arrival in the family. The day ends with a traditional feast of sarson da saag and makki di roti and a dessert of rau di kheer (a dessert made of sugarcane juice and rice). The purpose of the Lohri harvest ceremony is to thank God for his care and protection. During this festival the people prepare large quantities of food and drink, and make merry throughout the day and night. Therefore everyone looks forward to this day. According to legend, a good Lohri sets the tone for the whole year ahead - the more joyous and bountiful the occasion, the greater will be the peace and prosperity.

The origin of Lohri is related to the central character of most Lohri songs, Dulla Bhatti, a Muslim highway robber who lived in Punjab during the reign of Emperor Akbar. Besides robbing the rich, he rescued Hindu girls being forcibly taken to be sold in slave market of the Middle East. He arranged their marriages to Hindu boys with Hindu rituals and provided them with dowries. Another story relates that once Dulla Bhatti rescued a girl from kidnappers and adopted her as his daughter. When he got his daughter married off his people would remember their hero every year on Lohri. Groups of children moved from door to door, singing the Dulla Bhatti folk-song:

    Sunder mundriye ho!
    Tera kaun vicaharaa ho!
    Dullah bhatti walla ho!
    Dullhe di dhee vyayae ho!
    Ser shakkar payee ho!…

It has elements that offer similarities to the American Holloween. Much like Holloween, the children sing folk songs outside the door and ask for generous reward, ‘lohri,” which is often roasted peanuts in shells, sesame-covered molasses-candy known as “riori” or other special gift that family may choose to share with the revelers.

In recent times, with more and more people from Punjab, especially the youth, moving to other countries, particularly USA, U.K. and Caneda, the festival of Lohri has also spread out far and beyond the fields of Punjab. Lohri is the annual event at Stanford! The event includes traditional singing and dancing around the fire, live dhol beats from renowned dholis, free food and snacks, bhangra music, and a special performance by Chardi Jawani, the Stanford Bhangra Team. This is a community event - grandparents to grandkids, all are welcomed. Newly born, Newly engaged, and Newly wed especially encouraged to come! Entrance is free, though there is always a request to bring a blanket or quilt to sit on while you eat and watch the performances. Energetic beats of the dhol and spirited voices of one and all is how the guests are welcome to the festival of Lohri. And, what sends the merriment quotient higher and louder is the rhythmic beating of the double-sided barrel drum. Popular lyrics and a bhangra swirl all come alive to its enthralling beats. Dressed in bright red and green kurtas and a tamba (something like a dhoti) the dholis are an essential part of any celebration, especially on Lohri. With celebrations getting bigger, these artistes are booked much in advance. What follows next is a mix of Bollywood and Punjabi numbers. — Kajra re, Dupatta tera nau rang da, Mauja hi mauja, Nagada nagada in Bollywood, Jazzy B’s Romeo, Jine Mera Dil Luteya and the all time fave Boparai’s De De Gera. Mouth-watering munchies, mountains of Moongfali and popcorn, trays of gachak tempt. And we succumb. (You would have to be a saint not to!) Forget calories and bite into the 13 varieties of gachak, Til (sesame seeds) coated in lip-smacking golden gur (jaggery), gachak and chikki is just the beginning of what will lure you here. A treat for all the senses is the aromatic, eye-catching and scrumptious gulab gachak. Garnished with rose petals, this is quite popular for obvious reasons. If it’s nuts you like to gorge on, then bite into the dry fruit preparations. This rich gachak is very much in demand. Since Lohri is incomplete without these high-cal goodies, no wonder a vigorous version of the bhangra to go with it?

Whether as nostalgic memories of mother’s festivities or as the hearty heritage of Punjab’s exciting culture or attending the event at Stanford in USA, of all the festivals, Lohri is the liveliest.

    With best wishes

    Tilak Rishi (USA)

Sir - You must have pondered these questions - ‘Who am I?’, ‘Where did I come from?’, ‘What is the purpose of life?’, ‘How did it all begin?’ or ‘Is there a begining?’… The supreme intelligence has indeed mystified and sometimes terrified us keeping these questions always unanswered! As you ruminate then, you somehow know that you are a part of that supreme intelligence, playing your role on the sands of time. In your case, you are playing an award winning role - an overwhelmingly grateful son, a dedicated husband, a fantastic father and a performer par excellence! …please pray that we mere mortals can do justice to our roles too!! Glory be to the one that is in All! (Sir - would be absolutely delighted to hear from you - could you please call me on 98223-81500?) Thanx! Rajj Banny

Happy Makar Sankranti every one–in our community this festival means”half the winter is over”
All those who wish to fly kites will take leave today.

Gujaratis shout ‘KAAIPO CHHE” when they cut string of the flying kite of the opponent.

Amitabhji -have you ever flown kites on this auspicious day?

    Dear Amitji,
I am amazed with your involvement in all these activities- particularly, going from promos of Rann to a programme on your great Father ’s poetry in Paris and then being brand ambassador for colors- woow.
I wanted to ask you about that “uneasy feeling” you had few days ago after the award ceremony- I hope you are feeling better. Please let us know.
Any plans for coming to US ?
Good luck with all these activities and your busy schedule. Please do take some rest.
    love and more…
    Ashesh

  212. Mayank Kulshreshtha says:

Well I see lots of entries on Lohri above here. I am sure most people in this world donot know that Lohri is celebrated in the similar manner in many parts of Europe especially scandanavia. Indian Embassy in Norway discovered this and later found out that Norway also has elements of sanskrit in their language. The government of Norway has introduced sanskrit in their curriculum. Indian culture had got spread to many parts of the world and it was never other way round as is suggested by the English educated historians who have been writing our history text books since independence. The whole Aryan theory is a false. More on this latter;)

Zainab—please read comment at serial no. 203 carefully

Always address Amitabhji respectfully by adding ”ji” or Shri or Sir or Mr . You love Amitabhji very much. Is it not? You are still in your teens and Amitabhji is like your paa’s paa in age–you may love him as much as you like—let him be the ONLY man of your dreams–but give proper respect to him as you would like to give to your Dadaji–Bade Abba.
    God bless you Zainab

sir,I dont know that u will read this comment or not..bcoz this is my first time to write on anyones blog..now at 1.AM i am sitting on a computer and my mummy is also scolding me ,she is feeling that i am doing chatting with frdz..but i have said that,”no mummy ,i am writing comment on a amitabh bacchans blog…which directly goes to him..and read by him..but she said that,”yeh sab zooth hota hai, amitabh bacchan to hamesha TV pe rehta hai..use tera comment padhne ke alava kuch kaam nahi hai kya?…but I truly feels that the man who has the tremendous love about his work and family will always be in touch with the people by whom he get love and cheer.and I think that we called the good human being…which is the most difficult and the highest goal to be achieved by someone in his or her life..

It seems Auro has passed on some strain of progeria to you…hence the increased incidence of forgetting things…a sign of old age. :D

  220. Akash Verma says:

    Dear Sir,

Completely agreed about forgetfulness…… it may be the result of not only the age…. stressful mind…..irritation…..disappointments…..depression….al may cause this forgetfulness…..irrespective of the age,,,,!
