I must refrain from confessing my condition. I must refrain from sharing my inner feelings. I must remain within myself. I must not transfer that which is my burden on to others. I must learn to keep my thoughts to myself. I must… I must …
A moment of weakness has resulted in the concern and unnecessary stress to the FmXt. I should not have disclosed to you what was going through my mind yesterday. It brought pain to you and worry and that was most inconsiderate. Why must you suffer what I suffer. I must be there to bring smiles and happiness to your lives. To listen instead to your areas of concern and worry and if possible bring some light to it in relief. So I extend my heart in pardon and forgiveness.
The night as was obvious was uncomfortable. Why is it that issues that concern us seem so unconcerning to others ? Why is it that conditions that bring us on with a leaden face, never seem to have the same effect on others ? Is it the satisfaction they live in of not being in our position or are they made of sterner stuff. Why is it that we cannot be the stuff they are made of. Why is it that we never seem to possess the strength of conviction and the great fortitude that they arm themselves with constantly.
How is it that they never cease their work conditions, yet we do ours. Why is it that they fail to show remorse, whilst we are constantly within one. Is the construct of our minds and bodies different. Why is it that we always seek the other, rather than rejoice with and within our own.
Human nature is so puzzling and so diverse. Ha ! I get paid to study it every Friday and yet have the audacity to put out all that I have today, in a public domain. Ridiculous !!
Settle down Mr B. Reflect back on when last you were like this. Think of the depths of grim desolation that you brought yourself into and think then of how it all settled down. Or did it really ? If I can recollect it, it probably never did. That then is the fault. Memory !! It wanders about almost as though it had gone dormant and then emerges suddenly, either with greater power, or with softer and subtle destruction. Either way it harms. Best then to leave it alone and let it fester by itself and vanish. But skeptical compulsions bog us down. We know it shall never vanish or disappear. At least individuals like us do. We bring it on to ourselves. Are we too selfish in our thoughts and too compelling to our fragile system. A system that when provoked does respond somewhat sincerely, but perhaps not enough to overcome what we have allowed to occupy us.
My occupation seems desperate. It may not to the other. That is the perennial dichotomy of life. If we are all humans then we must all be one. But are we really, other than the color of our blood.
I must remove myself from this condition else I shall remain here and damage those that linger in my vicinity. Lets get back to the film and Paa and more …
Yes more is welcome. Balki wishes to put in 3 deleted scenes of the film back on to it. And I think we shall be talking to the channels and media about it. One of the refrains that floated by was that they had wished there was more of Auro in the film. Guess Balki heard that one and now wishes to execute it. So soon, very soon as they get technically prepared, the fresh scenes shall find their way in the film. Would you think that that would be a good idea ? A poll on that ? Ok .. poll it shall be !
Life is akin to my grandmom in the film Paa - a bum ! It is soft and deliciously well proportioned, but at times it does get a bit nasty !! So what do we do with it. Do we discard it, leave it behind, punish it ? No, we bear it and still use it for all its qualities that it propounds.
I’m not leaving it anywhere in some alien surrounding, nor shall I be discarding it or leaving it behind. It shall remain where it was before, in the right place and in the right proportion and never be sought out for punishment. That would be too severe.
Life is the ’seat’ of all that is manifested for us. Bear it with love and care, for it provides more than what we may or can at times imagine.

You have come so close to where I was a few times. Once you were in my neighborhood and my uncle and aunt saw you and when I got to know you were so close, I started crying. I was about 17 back then. And recently my father and you were on the same flight to Delhi, he was sitting right behind you. And my father was going to call me to come to the airport but you had left by then. This was the same visit when you came to inaugurate Mr. Salve’s wife’s store at the Emporio Mall. I live 2 houses away from Mr. Salve’s house and his daughter Sakshi is my batch mate who is also on my facebook. She had put up that evening’s pictures on facebook and I felt so jealous and also sorry for myself.
So, I tell everyone in my family, one day AB himself will call me and ask me to meet him and they all laugh at me. To be honest, I laugh at myself too ! Coz to you I will look like just another fan of yours. But I think, even if you weren’t the star actor, and we would have met, I would have still loved you and admired you immensely ! Coz its YOU who I love… what you do is a part of you which I love any way..

I really wish you would not refrain from sharing your inner feelings. We should be able to handle the negative as well as positive feelings and parts of life. We want to find out your thoughts as much as you care to divulge them. Yesterday you said that we are your strength. How can we continue to be your strength if we are only exposed to one aspect of you?
And why are you only there to listen to areas of our concern? I didn’t think that was the whole purpose of the blog. It shouldn’t be one sided. This is not Bigg Boss! We are also here for you.
Every human is an individual and we vary widely on how we react to the outside world and how we handle problems. Everyone has a different personality, environment, and history so I would not expect that all people would react the same in similar circumstances. That’s what makes it interesting.
I think it woould be great to insert the deleted scenes into the DVD of ‘PAA’. So will you post the poll this time?
That is such an amusing philosophy about that portion of the body in the last part of your post! I hope the nastiness for me doesn’t last too long but I’m not optimistic.

Each of us have come onto this blog because we want to be with you, experience and understand how u feel, get to know what you do and how you go about living your life! If we want all this, how can we not want to share your pain and feel your pain, like I would naturally assume you would feel ours as well!
A simple request to you would be for you to be the Amitji we know…the one who tells it like it is! If there is anything to worry about, worry about it when it becomes an issue! Now that is the Amitji I have grown to admire, respect and turn into an IDOL!

Perhaps when the DVD version of PAA is released there should be a directors cut and further all the deleted scenes that for whatever reason failed to make it in the final print.

I read somewhere that PAA will be cut down for ‘3 Idiots’ release, I dont think PAA has ended its run yet, people who have seen the preview show of ‘3 idiots’ are saying its an awesome movie, Aamir is back and its reminds us of the same feeling we got watching Dil Chahta Hai..I still wish Auro takes all the awards next year, even though I am a fan of Aamir too. you truly deserved it

As for the POLL QUESTION, definitely a great idea. I watched PAA today though I am suffering from pneumonia.You were just fantastic.I read the reviews of other people on the blog.They were all praising you as they were bound to do so having seen their favorite actor at his best.
So,I wondered how am I gonna express my thoughts after seeing the movie.Those emotional moments in the film made me cry,literally.But sometimes I did so.
You were awesome uncle…….no words to praise you.And of course Abhi and Vidya were very good too.
One dejection to me was that I wanted Auro to survive :(.

PAA was a cool movie, you were awesome as AURO, for it overshadowed the Bachan in you and presented AURO as himself, that is what I loved the best, to play someone so completely out of the skin. I would like to know the status of your other movie Shantaram, is that movie still on? What are your views on Jhonny Depp as an actor? Please reply.
I don’t think you are here simply to alleviate questions or concerns we might have. It is very generous of you to think so but it wouldn’t be fair for anyone to put that responsibility on you and if you feel it on your own you should be divested of the suggestion! To the extent you speak about your concerns it is wholly welcome. I would even go so far as to say that it is more welcome than anything else. Because this blog is an ‘autobiographical’ exercise on your part in so many ways. If you are Hamlet-like at points, occupying a more ‘intellectual’ (for want of a better word) sphere at other moments you are also Beckett-like with all the ‘cricks and pains’. I have great affection for both. There is also the Lear-like voice at points which too is a very potent part of the mix. Last but not least the satirical polemicist also shows up from time to time. All very welcome. Most endearing, even touching in this sense is the constant recourse to the passive voice which carries an old world charm. The subject engaging in a ‘confessional’ of sorts is nonetheless embarrassed to resort more than occasionally to first person pronoun. There is the collective ‘we’ [not royal (!) but inclusive of everyone here] and as I just said the charm of the passive voice which recalls an earlier age in art and etiquette. You are very ‘old world’ in some ways and yet you are also constantly attracted to the ‘new’ in all its guises. It’s a very interesting mix but also a problematic one for the subject.
It would be great to have scenes added to Paa. Might I suggest something? As opposed to adding scenes in the theater at this relatively late stage where I doubt it could add to the performance of a film that’s already trending so superbly why not produce eventually a ‘director’s cut’ on DVD? I’ve long had this gripe about Indian DVD production that there is never a director’s cut. Deleted scenes are useful but a director’s cut is better. To this end I know Mehra wants to do this with his intended cut on D6 and I eagerly await it.

Please please PLEASE never reproach yourself for sharing your feelings with us… your doubts and even fears, the aspects of life that trouble you. It is our great honour and privilege if you confide in us, however obliquely, when you experience these moments of soul searching…
To me it is not weakness but great strength to be able to admit to uncertainty and doubt… these are the true hallmarks of deep and complex humanity, of a finely tuned intelligence … only fools and psychopaths are always sure and certain and lacking in self-critique.
And a creative temperament - such as yours is extra sensitive. It is a great gift to those who enjoy its fruits, but sometimes less of a blessing for the person who has to weather the intense highs and lows that it can produce… the sometimes painful super-sensitivity to life.

I watched “Paa” with my kids. My daughter who is just 8 years she said Oh My GOD he acts so well (he means Auro) she is big fan of Abhishek but she is fan of Auro too.
Very well made movie. I can watch this movie again and again.

I would never feel burdened. I would do anything in my capacity to help and solve. It worries me when I know you are burdened with something. I do hope that you have been able to clear what was worrying you and if not may I ask if I can help?
I think each one of us have different concerns, priorities, goals and ways to analyse and weigh up the pros and cons. Therefore it often appears that the other person is not seeing things the same way or concerned or affected by something in the same way as I may be.
Some may laugh at this but I do also think that God’s chosen few often seem to have to carry more burden than the rest.
Some of us may have more tendencies to analyse and over analyse the ‘what if’ scenarios and then we find ourselves bogged down until something else catches our attention or requires our attention and then the former gets put away until something triggers it again.
I personally think for commercial interest and longevity of the product, some time should pass before introducing a version of PAA with the deleted scenes put back in.
I think it’s very clever to compare life to a ‘bum’ or seat and love your message in the last line, “Bear it with love and care, for it provides more than what we may or can at times imagine”.

You seem to be in some kind of pain. We all go through pain. Some day when I meet you I want to tell you about the most severe pain I have ever felt. I needed support. I needed my loved ones, I needed to be held, I needed reassurance that everthing was going to be alright, I needed to be able to talk about my concerns, I needed to be told that that was just a bad dream, I needed the touch of that hand. None of it was forthcoming. None of it whatsoever. The nightmare lasted for a while, I lost weight due to lack of appetite. I feared the worst happening to my loved ones. It was like something was about to explode. I have put it all behind me and have moved on hoping that some day I will be held and reassured. Such is life. Sorry to tell you about my thoughts.

No, you are wrong when you say you must be here to bring smiles and happiness to our lives, we save that feeling when we are in the theaters watching you on the screen. Here we come to the blog because we see the ‘human’ behind the actor and being human, you bring your emotions, feelings, and thoughts which is what makes it a special place to be. Sometimes we put in our worthless two cents to make you feel better which might work or not work, might be read or not read, but we get the satisfaction that we were part of the process where you vent your feelings.
Coming to your questions, I can give a whole psychological jargon but I know you already know the answers as you have seen and lived life. Adding deleted scenes to PAA, cannot vote as we do not know what kind of scenes they are. If they were deleted and yet the movie was a success which means they were not needed in the first place. Just my worthless two cents….wish you all the best on the decision

Yes Sir, the scenes should be added for sure as something was missing in this wonderful film Paa. We enjoyed for sure…but couple of things would have made it even more complete film.
For example:
1. Abhishek know that the Auro is his son only in the end and Auro says paa while dying - would have made more sense if there would have been more fun with son father and the Auro’s end should have followed
2. There should have been a simple fun song including Auro and his little friends
3. Auro’s monkey dance scenes should have been more. What we saw in the film, we had seen it all in the promos. So, there was nothing special left in the film as far as you great monkey dance was concerned.
But, in totality the film is great and your performance is really memorable!!

I have never considered your purpose to be our entertainment or our magazine type problem page - ‘Ask Amitabh’ - heaven forbid! You are a person and concern for you comes naturally, especially when the pressures of your demanding existence are so apparent. It’s our pleasure to discuss and mull over solutions in the vain hope they are of assistance. The very basics of human relationships are built on sharing the highs and lows of life; we are conditioned to want to do it and it can never be a burden. Through adversity or joy, we remain united and I assure you every millisecond is sheer bliss for all! I just hope you feel similarly when we give rise to our feelings at times, however obscure they appear, hopefully the underlying message is clear.
In that vein ‘different strokes, for different folks’ as the popular idiom suggests. Individuals are wired uniquely so responses to the same issues will differ between most. Your artistic and deeply humane character lends to a delicate and responsive reactionary system - to put it bluntly - you are a natural ruminator. Issues irk you and get under your skin more than the ‘logical and one dimensional’ (read boring!) characters might. In fact your feeling nature is your greatest asset, it’s the forerunner to compassion and benevolence, making you almost, the paradigm of humanity. Renaissance literature would label you a man of sensibility.
Those ‘others’ simply depend on their arrogance, often presenting a brash bravado externally to conceal a multitude of insecurities and short comings within. Only a small narrow minded person believes they are above remorse and correction. Without those we thwart our growth and simply perish in the same putrid condition we began in. On a different note, not every human reaction can be assigned to characteristics alone. I strongly believe our responses to issues and stress are determined by physical factors too. One can react reasonably on a day they are well and relaxed; in comparison with the extreme reactions in the opposite situation.
Memory is a fault depending on how we allow ourselves to use it - being a female at times I confess my memory is my best weapon! Unpleasant memories tend to vanish after due periods, the beautiful ones remain forever - as it should be. But perhaps, that paragraph requires a fresh mind to tackle as do some of your bottomless (pun intended) philosophies on life …
In spite of the much appreciated humour, I am sorry you are evidently still troubled especially when you were enjoying a much deserved stream of happiness. Situations change all too rapidly in your game, don’t they?! I cannot help thinking about those ‘future decisions’ you alluded to a few days ago and wonder if they provide the source of the problems. Nevertheless, please share the burdens in whichever way you see fit. In turn, we promise not to unload on you Mr Bachchan… well for a while anyway!!

Something seems to be really disturbing and upsetting you, and some people seem to have failed in showing some needed compassion, understanding and consideration. But what do you expect Mr. B from human beings?!! they are no angels after all and all humans have their own failings and shortcomings, and this might be the only thing in which all humans are the same.
But definitely humans are not the same and their reactions to issues and situations are never the same. But everyone has his own beliefs, points of views, values, inner whims and sensitivity degrees which dictate his reactions. It is not surprising then to find something which is really provoking and upsetting to us might have a different or no effect at all on another person.
Your thoughts of the closing paragraphs are interesting. Maybe that’s what makes life enjoyable, since its occasional nastiness and viciousness which make us appreciate other moments of delight, comfort and softness. And I always bear and appreciate life for all that it gives to me…and grateful for those moments of happiness and joy which i can live and cherish.

My sincere regards to you. One question that’s bugging me for days now is why on Bigg Boss 3 Poonamji talked about Bharitya Sanskriti when she herself was pouring Champagne and rejoicing it on her last B’day infront of her young kids. Bharthiya sanskriti does not allow women to have Champagne/alcohol. So it puzzles me how you can accuse others for lack of Bhartiya Sanskriti that too for people just talking and spending time together in Bigg boss house. Please ask her this question when you meet her. Though I really have always admired her beautiful face.
You know..I was just thinking its been years since Ive rollerskated. I used to do that all of the time. Where I live now there is a local amusement park..small but it has been around for a long time. Its on the river front here and it carries alot of activities ..rides that make you scream ,,and some that you’d better not eat anything before you buy your ticket.. its a great place..fun for families and it’s owned and operated by a very nice couple. But back to the rollerskating..it is so invigorating to get out there and try as one might to remember how to gently glide around the oval rink. Sometimes just sitting on the sidelines and watching the people is great too.. therapy…observing interactions of all the participants. I really need to get out and try it again..
My memories of funtimes are not all that accurate I guess its the reassurance and comfort that is the blanket. I love that place.
As I get older too I find myself searching for ‘community’ not fearing what anybody thinks but I am too old for that :)..and probably I dont care what anybody thinks either. When my husband died 3yrs ago I thought my life had ended..after all the legal hassle I finally got to take a deep breath. But life didnt stand still then either it was light speed and I am far from what and where i used to be. When we think we carry the world on our shoulders it is of our own doing. We are not made to do that..we are here in this world to function in our way. I used to be like that but I have wised up considerably ..

Alas, I wish what you wrote “…shall never vanish or disappear” is true in real life.
Almost 99%, and I repeat 99%, of my mother’s memory has vanished and disappeared….we started noticing hints of forgetfulness about 2 years ago, but of no great significance. Sometime later she was diagnosed as suffering from Dementia – an irreversible loss of memory. What shocked us most was that the memory loss deteriorated rapidly within just 6-8 months.
She has no recollection of her home or family members – at times she says am her brother, some other times there is recognition than am her son. On seeing my wife of 25 years, i.e. her daughter-in-law, enter the room, she asks innocently “who is this lady?”
She has flown from Delhi to Hong Kong over 25 times to stay with me, but on her recent flight to Hong Kong she commented that it was a strange “train” in which she was travelling, as there were no stations enroute….
Once again, I wish that memory never vanishes or disappears!!

Want to talk back to you, but just want to hold you for a second while I comment on what Veekay from Hong Kong has written. While I scrolled down to write to you I suddenly noticed his entry and felt really sad about what he might be undergoing. But there is one thing I want to say to him and to all, if they would just listen. A person undergoing an ailment suffers more from the reflection of that illness on the faces of people around them than the ailment itself. It doesn’t matter how much love or concern you have for the person suffering, please do not do this to them. Veekay, so what if your mother’s memory is not the same as earlier, why are you giving up ? It is an irreversible loss of memory only because you are believing on the fact that it is irreversible.
So what if she doesn’t recognize your wife one day, do you remember as a kid how you would smile at a person one day and confidently cry at the strange looking face of the same person the next day. No one at that point thought that your memory was going, did they ? Just because she is elderly, you take this for granted and think that is how life is ? I guess, that is why elderly people don’t recover and keep deteriorating, because everyone around them have already given up on them. So what is the point anyway ? I just hope you think of it a little differently this time.
And now for you Mr. Bachchan, just wanted to tell you to continue doing the brillant work you have been doing and not worry too much about critics simply because - THERE WAS NEVER ANY STATUE MADE, EVER, OF ANY CRITIC ;0)

There is some bother somewhere. This reminds me of a similar situation with you, shortly before IIFA, HKG. Perhaps , you will be able to collate it better yourself. But, dear , even this will pass away. And then, you will probably feel, you worked yourself up too much, for something which could have been done less with. Now to your question on Paa. I am not answering the poll, because I strongly feel, that You and Balki and Jayaji should decide this. Only you people know the relevance, significance and the value addition of those 3 scenes, so you should decide and decide very quickly. So, onto some action… procrastination can be, if not detrimental , but some value reduction , at times, depending on the significance of the issue.
I am looking forward to a book release of a very senior architect friend today, and then a birthday party of my niece.

There is no question on whether to add the 3 deleted scenes or not. These scenes MUST be added ASAP and must be promoted. PAA facebook should also be updated. I didn’t see any updates on facebook since Dec 2.
You still need to promote PAA. It may make a difference of 30-40 crores still when the final numbers are computed.
PAA Is a classic, masterpiece and has the best acting in the whole world. Every effort must be made to make it the biggest blockbuster of all times. And I know it has the potential. Promotion of Runn and Teen Patti can wait for the time being.

Sorry Amitji, I am writing this for Abhishesk to read in the capacity of Producer of Paa.
I watched the movie last night here in KL, with my 4 year old son and my husband. My son at first was apprehensive about watching it, and was drawn to the poster of ‘3 idiots’ and insisted that we buy tickets for that one and not Paa. Having tried to explain to him that the movie he wanted to watch was still a week away from release, and that there were plenty of school children in Paa (something of his interest); to no success. We entered the movie hall, and after some time, I could my son laughing his happy laugh !! He enjoyed all the jokes, he loved Auro !!
Well that was for a 4 year old audience.
For a mother in me, I resonated with the resolve with which Vidya took care of Auro single handedly. I however would have loved to see her more on the screen, he struggle of bringing up Auro, coz the showcasing of Paa’s career challenges was doing nothing much to the movie, but on itself it was a good showcasing.
We loved the movie tremendously !! Being the cry-baby that I am I did shed loads of tears, and when we stepped out I saw some more ladies with red eyes !!
And today I read that you guys are thinking of including the deleted scenes !!! When will we get to see them in KL, Malaysia??

One just cannot deny the fact that Assam has hogged national, nay international limelight — yes, limelight — for all the wrong reasons during the past couple of decades. And that is precisely why there has been a negative perspective all over about the land and its people. Sadly, there has not been any fruitful concerted move to negate this negativity and project Assam in a positive way. The result is that for people outside the state, Assam is a land of jungles infested with terrorists where nothing other than terrorism can happen. Open any newspaper or watch any news channel on television, Assam gets prominence only when something bad or terrible like bomb blasts, killings, kidnappings, etc take place.
However, amidst such negativity, here comes a whiff of fresh air that surely puts Assam on a positive light. It’s a book, to be precise a coffee-table book, titled Assam, that highlights the positives of the land and its people and culture. While deliberately skipping all the negatives — terrorism, in this case — the book in its 29 chapters covers the land and its people, its history, food habits, tourism, wildlife, economy, tea and oil, sports, mobile theatre, etc, resplendently with colourful photographs that speak volumes for themselves. In fact, more than words, it is the photographs that serve the purpose of this lavishly illustrated book, which according to its promoter and publisher Nanda Talukdar Foundation is “introducing Assam”.
Laying my hands on one of the first prints of Assam — the characteristic smell of the glossy paper being still fresh — to have rolled out from Hyderabad’s Pragati, one of the finest printing houses in Asia, I was sweetly surprised that such a book has been published from this part of the country, that too without any financial support from the government agencies. From the well-meaning jacket to the diverse contents inside, the book is a revelation in itself. Be it the aesthetic design, breezy layout, smart word play, talking pictures, et al, the book depicts Assam in all its glorious hues, and all these put Assam at par with any global standard coffee-table book.
The making of Assam in progress In fact, the state government itself could have long back painted a picture of positive Assam through such an initiative, which luckily was undertaken by eleven enterprising people, all coming from diverse fields, who assembled under the banner of the Guwahati-based Nanda Talukdar Foundation, a treasure trove of Assamese literature helping many a researcher and an institution that specializes in social audit, besides foraying into publication, and the outcome is there for all to see.
Says Mrinal Talukdar, who represents United News of India (UNI) in Northeast India and the brain behind this unique project: “It was during my cricket World Cup assignment in West Indies in 2007 that the idea was born. As I was strolling at Connaught Place in New Delhi, two days prior to my departure to London en route to the Caribbean, window shopping, I stopped at a bookstall and was amazed by the array of the giant coffee-table books, ranging from turbans of Rajasthan to houses of Goa to Chandni Chowk of Delhi, besides dozens on the Ganges and India. I searched for books on Assam… As expected, there were several — only on problems and prospects, but not on the happy Assam and definitely, not a coffee-table book.”
Having earlier experience of doing a coffee-table book for the state public works department, billed Roads of Assam, where seasoned journalist and The Tribune special correspondent in the Northeast, Bijay Sankar Bora, one of the eleven people behind Assam, too was a partner, Mrinal conceived the skeleton of the project in the Caribbean islands itself and found the project cost to be well past Rs 10 lakh, which was an unthinkable amount for himself alone. So he e-mailed his friends from the West Indies detailing about the nascent ‘Assam’ project. While some did not bother to respond to his mail, twelve actually got together — one, however, departed midway — to give shape to the dream project. The project also saw the birth of a new concept in the state’s publication arena where the eleven raised the capital floating shares among themselves, opening a completely new model of entrepreneurship. They also worked on the write-ups, routing all the material through a system of check and balance.
The others who joined the project were: Abhijit Bhuyan, an entrepreneur, visionary and pioneer of medical engineering in this region; Prasanta Borkakoti, an oilman by profession but obsessed with rural Assam; Rahul Karmakar, the pointsman of The Hindustan Times in the Northeast; Raj Chakrabarty, who builds road for National Highway Authority of India, yet finds time to be involved with literary projects; Ratan Saud, a journalist-turned-government official; Sanjeeb Kakoty, a historian, a filmmaker and a writer who teaches environmental history and sustainability at IIM, Shillong; Sanjoy Barkataki, a former civil service officer who gave up a cushy job and opted for journalism instead; Utpal Borpujari, who trained to be a geologist at IIT-Roorkee, but chose to become a journalist and film critic — he has won the Golden Lotus for best critic at India’s national film awards; and Krishna Talukdar, the administrator of the NTF.
“We all assembled in August 2007 and took the solemn pledge that even if not a single copy of the book is sold, we shall take pride for the rest of our lives that we have achieved something for our beloved land by pooling our meagre resources,” said Mrinal. But that was not to be, as people, especially the Assamese expatriates across the globe as also their friends have shown a keen interest in the book, thanks to its sleek promotion. Perhaps this is the first book from Assam to be promoted on the internet with a video. The nearly two-minute video can be seen on http://www.youtube.com by searching ‘Assam book’. Sample some stuff from the 212-page book: “Assam isn’t just a part of India’s enigmatic Orient; it is a microcosm of the country. There isn’t a single sub-continental community — from a village (Kampur) of localised Sikhs to Tamils in the vicinity of Guwahati’s Balaji Temple and Afghans — that hasn’t settled down across the 78,438 sq km area the state occupies. No wonder, Assam has four official languages — Assamese, Bengali, Bodo and English — and publishes school textbooks in 14, almost equal to the number of primary tongues recognized by the Constitution of India.” Many such fascinating facts about the land and its colourful people adore the book Assam — all elaborated in crisp language.
The living archaeological museum called Majuli, the customs, cultures and festivals of Assam, the flourishing literature scene, the exotic wildlife having a diverse flora and fauna, the vibrant agricultural and industrial scenario, led by tea, oil and coal, the tourism potential, the legends and icons,… all come alive in the book through words and pictures. Then, there are chapters too focusing on Assam’s contribution in the freedom struggle of India, as also its people’s responsible role with a timely agitation against the illegal aliens that have now become a headache of the whole country.
It’s really a laudable effort on the part of NTF and the eleven associates to have brought out such a delightful volume in just two years’ time, though with a little more extra effort and time, the book would have had a comprehensive look.

Hi Sir,
Hope what has been bothering you, if anything, can be blown away with the love and support of the FmXt. Looking at the optimistic side to memories, they can have the power to bring out the smile and be the light at the dark end of the tunnel when dwelled upon. Individuals are different from one another physically as you have mentioned, but the main difference lies in the social environment. Not everyone grows up in the same environment and so not every person carries the same values, attitudes and mannerism. Maybe if there was more overlap there would be less problems and more unity.
To place the three deleted scenes into PAA to have more of Auro is an idea that I couldn’t agree with more. The audience loves Auro so yes, why not show them more of him! One question though, would the scenes be added into the film while it is still playing on the big screen (in other words re-release it) or when it gets released onto DVD?

My honest feeling about adding the deleted scenes is : wait till the dvd release.Many filmmakers use this ploy to boost sagging BO returns .Since Paa is doing so well ,adding new scenes at this juncture will be unfair to the paying audience who have already spent a substantial amount to be among the first to view this film. And also rather unethical.
My unsolicitated advice to Balki is : get to work on a director’s cut dvd release.
He might even want to water down Amol , the politician angle and build up the Paa-Auro angle for ,wasn’t this movie about a son and father discovering each other ?

(I would never say that in any case!) If I were to feel that way, I would say I am driven by desires and needs.
Its impossible to steer the feelings and emotions of a person who knows how to deal with his own. At the best one can appeal to them.
I look at my feeling or an emotion like an indicator on a car. When the right signal is on, it turns right; when the left is on it turns left; when both are on it has gone crazy…
Once the change has occured the indicator is switched off.
My fear or anger indicates a threat to my values just as my joy indicates the achievement of one. My feelings or emotions are only the indicators not the values.
In case of a movie, feelings are the most forgetable part of the story. The sustainable portions are the values on which a theme is based and the virtues of the performers.

May I first assure you that all my family members and I interact with my mother very normally without any reflection whatsoever of her ailment. We happily respond to her incorrect observations in the nicest way, so if, for instance, she is unable to recognize my wife and asks who she is, I simply give her the correct reply (my wife’s name) without becoming surprised or upset. Such types of queries arise so often during the day from her but we don’t give up our patience.
I have not given up on my mother just because she is 84 yrs old – if this was so, we would not have brought her from Delhi recently to stay with us in Hong Kong.
I am happy to tell you that touchwood, her health is otherwise stable, and it is indeed comforting to look after her.

And in this we are all one and all equal.. To know the basics of human nature we have to turn within ourselves and honestly study it.. From here comes the golden spiritual rule of life - “Treat the others the way you want to be treated yourself ”. If we follow it, we can not go wrong.. Adding mores scenes to ‘Paa” may be taken as cheating. Unsure what they may have. You people are in best position. The late viewers may be in advantage if these scenes are not adding up extra length. A better idea would be to add them in TV premiere whenever you do it.
Everyone has some strengths and some weaknesses. In your case, you have more strengths than weknesses.If you don’t share your weaknesses with others it will be difficult for them to understand that you are a normal human being. You are a great achiever after lot of hard work and because of your will,perseverance and other attributes.

I have seen Paa yesterday. You have done a incredible work. The way the character Auro has been potrayed is strong and yet beautiful and adorable. The performance in Paa leap frogs the one you made in Black. My belief is that no one in the enitre Bollywood till now have given such a performance as the one in Auro.
I think there never can be any other actor can achieve creatively what you have done with Auro

I’m back from the ‘Wreck the Halls 2009′ punk show where it felt great to be out and seeing bands again. I made the mistake of picking up the Village Voice because I saw more attractive events coming up. I also realized that I missed a cheaper punk show in Brooklyn, including one of my favorite live bands, ‘Endangered Feces’ (speaking of nastiness).
I just watched Bigg Boss where, as others have mentioned, you looked dazzling in white.

May I share a very private thought with you. As much caring and sharing we do on the blog, what would happen if EFs were put into the Big Boss house? What would happen if each one of us was robbed of our own space and privacy? How would that affect our behaviour towards the other?
The point I am trying to make is human was made to be imperfect, otherwise we would all be Gods wouldn’t we? The path was never meant to be smooth. It is not possible to change the world. In order to minimize the harm this inflicts on my mind, I shall manoeuvre my “camera” into another direction, steer away from negativity, I shall not allow it to pick up signals that are detrimental to my well being.
Yes we will bear life and continue to use it for all its qualities that it propounds. I am in agreement with you.

In the interests of not adding to perfection; I voted against releasing those deleted scenes from Paa. Presumably there will have been valid artistic and creative reasons they were excluded in the first place, perhaps those first decisions should be the ultimate. This trend of adding supplementary material to DVD’s is probably best for films that didn’t survive the B.O. well. Resembling a desperate last ditch attempt to salvage its credibility before the it disappears down the voracious plughole which leads to the Cinematic drainpipes, and is lost forever! In my humble opinion, for substantial films like Paa less is definitely more - but you are the professionals!
The essence of your life analogy - la derriere - is quintessentially what I identify as ’you’. Bear up, reap the best from bad situations and magnify the positive, do good always etc. I would agree, we have but one blank canvas on which to paint our life story. It would be senseless to scribble all over it, or punish it, because a few things are disagreeable. But, ultimately I don’t believe in voluntary suffering. ‘Bearing up’ under all circumstances , indeed the ones we can control and change, is neither beneficial to ourselves or the people around us. It fools nobody and yields misery and eternal bitterness. I abhor obligations and being obliged by others, its heartless. Whatever we do, however we live; if we do so with heartfelt conviction then that is a truly worthy, satisfying life. That’s my ideal, Goodness only knows if it exists in this world!
I won’t patronize you by trying to decipher your troubles; albeit their existence is screamingly obvious. Success and a name only breed further demands and problems, I do not doubt the pressures you face are immeasurable. I will however plead with you to be gentle with yourself. Certain times, certain significant dates looming, losses and grief can come flooding back with intensity and weaken our resistance to deal with other issues as effectively as we could. Just saying, if its at all relevant, be kind to Mr Bachchan and share the load wherever possible.
Bigg Boss is on my agenda soon, I did watch yesterday’s show and you lit up my evening with your dazzling white appearance and wit. Otherwise, I’ll reserve comments until I watch Aditi’s interview tonight.

Bollywood Romance: Now and then. (I remember Sridevi)
Love, they say, makes the world go around. It can also make your head spin, if you go by Hindi films nowadays. Not surprising, if you realize that this is the Facebook Generation, where “friending” is instantaneous, and requires little more than a mouse click. The more friends you have the better. And, apparently these are real words, “unfriend” being declared the Oxford Word of the Year (2009) by the New Oxford American Dictionary. When real life buzzes by, can reel-life be far behind?
Lately I have been subject to delicate ministrations of the romantic kind. On celluloid that is. One film after another claiming to be either a romance, or a romantic comedy – I see them all. Boy-meets-girl, they sing and dance (preferably in the rain), and voila! Love blooms! Truly, is this love, or the fast forwarded version? What ever happened to good, old-fashioned romance? You know, the kinds where the hero and heroine spied each other from afar, and remained where they were, instead of galloping into each others arms almost immediately! You know, the kinds where the language of love was spoken with the eyes, and conveyed through coyly written letters which dripped with complicated yet sweet-sounding words in the most chaste Hindi!
Yes, times have changed and so have the notions of love and romance. The lovelorn hero may not be your swashbuckling Sunil Dutt, but perennially suave Saif Ali Khan as modern-day pragmatic lover boy isn’t so bad either. Asha Parekh’s kohl-lined eyes may not make young men’s heart’s go pitter-patter anymore, but Kareena Kapoor’s do (!d!). In the recent romantic hit “Love Aaj Kal” Khan romanced two heroines, one of the present-day, and one from an older and, some say, wiser time. The beautiful and leggy Deepika Padukone played Meera, an independent minded girl who is quite practical about love, while Brazilian model Giselle Monteiro played Harleen Kaur, a young girl of the 60s, so in love with a boy not acceptable to her family, that she leaves them for him.
“Love Aaj Kal” nicely contrasts today’s love with yesteryear’s. While Harleen Kaur and Veer Singh are content to just look at each other, sigh and then sigh some more, Jai and Meera have no such forbearance. Their love is happy, snappy, and very, very hip. While one might imagine Harleen and Veer’s commitment hush-hush, their ardor tamped by the social mores of that time, Meera and Jai are New Age, and the openness of their relationship shows it. Love and all that comes thereafter no longer cleanly fits into the “happily settled” philosophy. Whereas older films were often almost prudish when showing physical affection (remember all those shots of two roses meeting, and the hero-heroine disappearing into tall grass?) newer romantic films are more open about such aspects.
Because so it was then, restraint was the name of the game. In the 60s, beautiful actresses like Waheeda Rehman and Nutan in churidars and huge hair-dos, waltzed their way in and out of love stories complicated by class barriers, familial obligations and the “accidental” pregnancy. In the 70s with the rise of talents such as Gulzar, love stories were often simple, but characters well-fleshed out. Gulzar’s fabulous film “Khushboo”(1975) starring Hema Malini and Jeetendra was a simple story set in rural India and dealt with love and perceived betrayal. It’s not that the basic love stories that films seem to thrive upon have changed so much; after all, we essentially are the same people, aren’t we? But the attitudes of the people in love have changed, and (don’t you love this?) changing times pose their newer challenges to the love-stricken.
Take the 80s for example – long before Mithun became a “dancing” star he actually did some great cinema. His 1980 film “Sitara” which starred Zarina Wahab in the female lead dealt with love gone wrong in the razzmatazz of the film world, where she attains stardom, and he feels left out. There are also social shifts in society which have influenced love as we see it now. Women for one thing weren’t really independent, in older films. Yes, an heiress maybe, but a businesswoman with an MBA like Katrina or Asin (!d!)? Not so much.
In a film like the recently released “Wake up Sid” Konkona Sen Sharma plays a writer out to make her mark in the world. She falls in love with a younger, immature college kid. So she actually has more agency than him, which shifts the love angle a little bit. In the 2006 romantic hit “Pyar ke side effects” the woman Trisha (played by Mallika Sherawat !d!) is taller AND makes more money than her live-in boyfriend Sid (Rahul Bose), and their love-story plays out in the context of Trisha’s insistence on marriage.
There is also then the issue of relative ages, and the almost spiritual it’s-all-in-the-head quality of love. In the 2001 hit “Dil chahta hai” Sid, falls in love with an older, divorced woman. Where traditionally the man is older, in “Cheeni Kum” the hero is older than the heroine’s father. Which is good enough for her, but not for her father.
There is ofcourse the happy medium where older and wiser counsel meets youthful exuberance. A prime example of this is the 2004 film “Rules – pyar ka superhit formula”. In it Radha, a lovelorn girl pining away for unattainable model Vikram (Milind Soman), is assisted by her grand-mother’s five rules for getting the man she so wants. This was a sweet film, which played up Radha’s grand-mother’s sprightly character and her old-fashioned common-sense against Radha’s lively and impulsive nature.
It also brought home the point that young or old, famous or not, we all eventually want the same thing – to be loved, adored, and appreciated. When this happens, birds sing, the skies clear, and music spews out from the heavens. Whether its yuppie rock, or a refrain from the 60s, really, how does it matter?

These are indeed moments of stark, naked truth. Sometimes they are so shocking that one goes blank in it’s immediate wake.
I was once the on-site rescue team commander of a road traffice accident. I reached the location within half an hour of the incident. There was a crowd that had gathered around the spot, afraid to get closer as the engines were still revving and there was the fear of a fire or explosion as the fuel had spilled over.
I cordoned off the area and stepped into the space where I was expecting the driver of the vehicle to be.
There was a red mass of flesh and blood in the seat. The skull cap had come off, and I could see his brain as if I was looking at a specimen in a physical laboratory.
I stared at the mess for one long moment - Where is the mind? Where is the consciousness? Where is the soul?
Two weeks later after the investigation reports and recommendations were filed, I returned to my small little world inside myself to file a an unwritten thought-report for myself.
Where are these things called mind, ego, consciousness, soul, memory, concepts, knowledge, virtues, values? Why did I not find any evidence of them in that open wound?
I found the answers quite soon. In the Atharva Veda and many other sources.
That’s not grim desolation, Mr. B. It’s the joy of being alive.
It’s the recognition of my responsibility to think and hold myself accountable for the thought.

No one can share only happy moments with someone. If really life is shared then it is with all the ups and downs. Otherwise it is a one way street of bum life.
Balki is right in adding two scoops of Auro I screem to Paa’s cup. Small fine tuning is certainly called for if situation demands. If the scenes have couple of Auro jokes then they may help that much.
Understanding human behaviour and nature is not an easy task. A man who remains same in his ethical standards in all situations is a man who can do miracles. One who cannot be bought at any price due to his principles is a real trustworthy person. Value of self is above any value system. Such people get respect in life even from their staunch opponents and critics.
I am sure Paa will break many records. Auro too will get applause along with all those who acted well in Paa.

I had a marvellous evening with school buddy Deepak Mehta at Nariman Point, I had earlier caught up with him at Leopold.. we spent a time for free entertainer in Sangat 2009 at NCPA Tata Theatre later shared beer at Status dropped him to Badhvaar Park and am here to share some of the thoughts..
The 3 hours that we might have got to spent were enough to make up for the 30 years that we had not met.. Thanks a lot Deepak.. and special thanks to Anita ji his wife to allow me to have some moments with an old timer.. and Karan ad Natasha you were great.. I would love if I could meet you all one more time before you leave for Delhi/Michigan.. I wish I had taken atleast Amrit along.. it is all right there always will be a next time..
Thank you God for such rejuvenation that has been provided in the form of meeting Deepak and his family.. Life could not be more rewarding than this.. My sincere thanks again to the great controller of this earth.. I feel to be in the other world.. one of the greatest days of the year 2009 slightly better than 28th November 2009 when I attended Bachchan Sandhya.. I am from Chennai who is back after living in US for 10+ years. I have been exposed to wonderful films of Hollywood, Hindi, French, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali and Tamil. I love well-made films be it art or commercial. I have enjoyed both Dhoom as well as Pather Panchali! I have now enjoyed the movie Paa. For me, Paa was a good entertainer with a lot of positive cinematic moments. For me the speciality of Paa is in the screenplay and direction above everything else. Ofcourse, your acting was superb! Lastly, Ilayaraja’s music elevated the movie. In the 1980s, several movies of Manirathnam, Bharatahiraja, K. Viswanath were made even more special because of the music of Ilayaraja. Ilayaraja is a unique music director who probably understands and interprets the movie as much as the director or in some cases even better. I dont think Ilayaraja has been given enough appreciation for his music in Paa. In South India, for a lot of people like me who were school/college going in 1980s, Ilayaraja was like a messiah. We are die-hard fans of Ilayaraja. We want him to get more recognition at the National and International level. Hope he does soon. Wish you all the best for your future endeavors.

Sorry that I missed out on the poll. Iguess it is ok to add more scenes if they are of the genre which has been most well received (like Auro’s wit, Grandma related, etc.) and can be avoided if of the less received topic ( like Abhi’s dig at the media). But as general statistics go, hits (especially with mega stars ) have a repeat audience of nearly 40% + and new scene additions gives this majority a mighty reason to return.

Yes, thank you for not giving away the plot. But even then I prefer to see it uncolored by anyone else’s impression.
Call it a weak mind, but it’s the only one I have and sometimes I protect it from unwanted input.
For example - although this is a different situation - I am pretty much the only person I know who has never seen “The Lord of the Rings”. And I never will because I love the books too much. Yes, I know, everybody tells me how magic and true the film is, but even being exposed to the unavoidable posters and book covers has taken away from the delicate fragrance.
I do however enjoy every single one of the Harry Potter movies.
Could it be that everybody holds one or more books so special that they can’t stand the thought of a movie adaptation?

The anti fur demo was cancelled because the impending snowstorm would get the video equipment wet, so I spent all morning watching the film ‘Nayak’.
This is one of the best Hindi films I have watched in a long time. Anil and Rani were superb. I loved the ‘pottery’ dance number with the sunflowers. Even one of my cats was staring at the screen during it. Those computer generated snakes were fantastic in the later dance number. And your name was even mentioned as happens so often.

i m new to ur blog,in fact after watching paa yesterday i wanted to express my feelings about ur performance.i m 21 yrs old..and i think u wont mind it if i will say tht i have grown watching ur films:)..i was one among many fans of yours..but after watching paa i have become a fan of urs once again..as mrs.bachchan said in introducions of the film “introducing amitabh bachchan” first i was like why “introducing”?but the film gave me answer..becoj u truly discovered a whole new horizon of acting..within 15 to 20 mts of the film i looked at u as a12 yr old child..and nt a grown up man..dnt want to mention ur age:)…jokes apart u made me forget tht auro is a character potrayed by a legendary actor..he was jst auro for me…i laughed with him on his getting away from hsi best frnd by convincing him tht he wants his bst frnd’s life above than anything else(tht was amaizing)..and i cried with him in his realization of his parents unmarital status…the monkey dance was amizing..the one liners of auro and his frnd vishnu were gr88…
The thing which i liked most about the fim was tht Auro was not presented as object of sympathy but he was in every respect a brilliant and talented 12 yr boy..no matter what his physical status was..this shows tht what love and care can do…the thing which our society needs to learn…

‘Paa’ was the most wonderful experience that I’ve had in watching movies off late.
But I wanted to share some experiences with you. Most of my friends’ circle & collegaues have not yet seen the film, ‘cos they perceive the film is about a diseased child & is bound to have loads of tears & sadness. They dont want to watch a ’sad’ & ‘rona dhona’ film; especially with their kids. It would ruin a weekend. This is exactly the reverse of my experience of watching the film. The film is poignant, but the humor is all pervading.
I have been doing my bit to tell them otherwise & dispel the misconception. But my sphere is limited.
While you’re adding the deleted scenes, it will be nice if the film can be projected & promoted as a happy family film. Lots of people dont know what they’re missing out on.

I wanted to say that when you were serious and into hospital during Koolie shooting accident at that time i was a little boy and prayed for you. My wife is also a ur big big fan and she told me that once she wanted to meet you in person. Hope sometimes we got a chance for that.
After reading ur blog I am thinking that after a lot busy schedule how you could able to spare time and yes your thinking power is extra ordinary like ur acting after reading ur blog anybody can says.
I would like to know that are you reading comments ? do u get time for that ? Or somebody is reading all comments and then ask to read only few which are remarkable.

I have been reading your blog from long time but never commented.Now i am forced to do so as after seing PAA as no one can do justice to the role as u did and if i had not known that in the role of AURO u are acting i wont even know that u are there in the film. I have watched lot of your movies i think most of them but the pictures which really touched my heart deep were Baghbaan and then PAA.Really amazing movies and with the message to the society.I will pray to god to give you long life and good health so that we can have some real cinema in years to come from you.
