The large fonts convey the largeness of feeling and joy. The purple .. a regal image to a festive mood. And the elation is for the unadulterated confirmation by one and all on the success of our film PAA ..
It is a miracle how temperaments change with that feeling of having attracted the attention of that elusive term, success. But change it does. You want to dress in your best and unworn. You want to drive the car that you were uncomfortable in making public. Your speech and its strength increases. Energy abounds as does your wit. Suddenly the world seems a happier place. The smiles become frequent and unforced and you suddenly feel the world starts to love you again.
The day though has been another exhaustive one. From one channel to the other in rapid succession. From one print to another, from radio FM to radio FM, from one emailed Entourage acknowledged letter to another, it has been a happy experience. This is in the words of the media the ’success interview’.
Alright I shall buy that. I’m not arguing…
But really, the acknowledgements have not stopped. And neither have the bouquets and letters of elaborate praise, from quarters I would never have expected.
So I hide in embarrassment as the accolades pour in and wonder what it is that I may have done to have touched the hearts of so many.
My people … you have been my support in hours of trouble and trial and today you have become those that join me in my happiness. My indebtedness is supreme as is my love and affection.
Remain with me … in my little world … and share with me the little that I am capable of bringing for you. It may not be large and expansive, but it has the gentle care and concern of my heart …
And may it ever remain so ….

Hello Mr. Bachan: I log in and check your blog regularly from the last month or so, after your interview with B Dutt. I dont watch movies much though i have watched all your earlier movies as a kid. Not sure i will be watching Paa; however, happy for your success and good luck with all your future ventures in cinema.
If i may make a suggestion, it is a fact that you are greatly admired and respected by the masses, so it would be great if you could allocate time to activism and advocacy on a larger scale. There are many causes that you could endorse such as Recycling, Environmental awareness, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation. The planet is on the brink of annhilation and eminent personalities such as yourself would greatly make a difference in creating keener public awareness on crucial issues and hopefully get people to THINK and ACT proactively to preserve the planet and its delicate ecological balance before its too late……..
The clock is ticking and we are racing towards destruction of the planet that nurtures and provides us the life-giving energies we require to survive. People such as yourself, that are greatly loved and looked up to, besides providing heartwarming and excellent entertainment may also want to consider waking up a slumbering populace to action and advocacy.

Dear Anat Magen,
Firstly, I rarely comment on the blog but felt compelled to reach out to you today. Although I read almost all the comments everyday, I missed seeing your comment on day 601 but was drawn to it by “Wisdom’s” reply to you. I was amazed and awed at his compassionate reply to you. Well, I just wanted to share that I also had two miscarriages before I went on to have my two kids. Nobody and I mean nobody, can understand the trauma of going through muiltiple miscarriages unless you have gone through them youself. I went through similar emotions like you, like I was a failure, felt horrible every time someone announced they were pregnant and so on. Here are some of the things I did, which hopefully may help you too. Like “wisdom” mentioned I went to the online support groups and found wonderfully supportive, understanding women who were going through the same things(multiple miscarriages and desperate for a child). They were of immense help and had very valuable suggestions. I also got myself thoroughly tested(found there was nothing wrong with me medically), found and stuck to a very, very nice OBGYN, left my job(delivering a healthy, full term baby became my full time job) and so on. And ofcourse I prayed incessantly and obsessively. I hope some of these suggestions will help you too. If you wish I can provide to you the links to the online support groups I mentioned above.
All the best to you and I know you can go on to be the mom you want to be.

I saw you on TV channel (Aaj Tak) and called the number …..number of times but as they say “jab tak bulawa nai aata …darshan ( read talk here) nahi hote”….anyhow I take consolation from “bhagwaan ke dwar me der hai andher nahi”…so hopefully will have a better luck soon.
Having said that …if I would have got the call connected …I would have asked you two questions..
1) What keeps you going ….at 67+ and perhaps after achiveing everything more than what an actor can actually dream?
2.) When can we see the PAA-2 ??

Paa did exceptionally well over second weekend. Friday opened to decent response of 1.75 Crore, Saturday picked up with 2.5 Crore and Sunday was huge 3 Crore, leads to 7.25 Crore nett weekend. Ten days total of Paa stands at 26.25 Crore. Occupancy and trending of Paa in second weekend is quite similar to first weekend. Difference in collections is due to less numbers of shows compared to first week (40 – 50% lower). If remain steady on weekdays then Paa second week should be close to 29-30 Crore.

From your appearance to your demeanor to your voice, it was just mindblowing. I actually forgot Amitabh Bachchan while watching the film and that is truly a testament to your talent as an actor. My heart filled with joy watching you dance around in the film and my eyes filled with tears watching you suffer at the end. I was also wondering how/why are you so gorgeous? I am asking this in all seriousness because sometimes when I watch your interviews or your films I think to myself that how unfair it is that I will never get to meet a man who is so gorgeous that he puts thousands of men to shame!!
I’m not sure if you YouTube yourself regularly or at all for that matter, but there was snippet of an interview of yours that was posted a few months back. I’m not sure what station the interview was conducted on or who conducted it, all I know is that it was done in July of 1984. As many people know you didnt give many (or any?) interviews in your earlier career b/c of the press ban. I believe it wasnt ’till the late ’80s or ’90s that you started giving interviews, so this interview that was posted was such a treat! While watching the interview I literally fell short of breath!! Although you do many interviews now and while you are extremely attractive now back then you were just mindbogglingly and mindblowingly sexy/gorgeous/handsome!! I was telling my sister that I wished that I could just jump in the TV and land next to you! Also, a lot of people have rare footage of you that they post on YouTube and because many of the interview are from before I was born it’s an incredible experience to watch them now! Its really exciting for me even though they are like 20-25 yrs!

I have taken some pains to put up some honest box office reporting on Paa here. This isn’t because I believe in the power of such online portals or ‘trade experts’ to alter reality for millions of viewers or shape the fate of films and the stars associated with them but because it is incumbent I think in life to challenge narratives that we know to be untrue and at least on matters we care about. Obviously any one human being cannot do this for every area of interest but to the extent one can a passivity shouldn’t be bred. Because this simply gives even more power to those who are less than sincere in fashioning their interpretation of events. I think you know this better than most.
At the same time I believe that just as the negative is highlighted so should the positive. Those who are fair and impartial to the best of their abilities. So Bollybusiness is a recent entrant online but one that has impressed me with its fairness. I don’t just say this because they’re positive on Paa but because they’ve been fair on other actors and films as well. For example Messrs Nahata and Adarsh have been busy dismissing the Rocket Singh opening as a disaster and what not when actually it has opened no worse than Wake Up Sid and if my hunch is right it might not do worse than that film either. But of course WUS was celebrated for the very initial that Rocket Singh is being ridiculed for. Before one knows it an entire media narrative about Rocket Singh not doing well has developed. It might not have the strongest word of mouth, it might even ultimately disappoint, that’s not the point. The film for its genre and scale was quite ok over the weekend.
Boxofficeindia meanwhile continue to up the ante suggesting ridiculously low lifetime totals for Paa. Of course if what they’re suggesting were true this would be the first time that a film with this much critical acclaim, this kind of extraordinary WOM would have actually not lived upto those indices in a box office sense! meanwhile anecdotally every other person confirms for me having seen the film with heavy or near capacity crowds even over the second weekend! As I predicted earlier Nahata went very negative on the film the more it got successful. Taran remains positive but he now calibrates his words very carefully. so it’s about the film ‘holding steady’ at ‘big city’ or ’select’ multiplexes. Wonder why those mad folks in Dhanbad are running three to four shows in week 2. Also wonder why the rest of India is daft along with them because a casual perusal of a site like bookmyshow.com reveals a very healthy number of shows across the length and breath of Indian in the second week.
I have never ever argued for a film or against it in box office terms because of the presence of a favorite star or one I did not care for. Because old-fashioned as this might sound the ‘numbers’ from my perspective belong to the realm of the factual and not to be denied at one’s whim. Unfortunately there is no such system in India to verify every penny being spent on a film as there is in many parts of the Western world. with the latter no one can argue with the grosses because independent bodies track down every last cent. For all sorts of reasons this isn’t possible in India. The trade has always behaved this way. However access to newer media gives these folks a power they perhaps did not have previously. So they’re in print, on TV and so on ready to celebrate or dismiss films almost as soon as these release. Within the industry these figures and others in the media are feted, the deal is often a fairly corrupt one, the other side maintains it to get good copy, so on and so forth. Now it is good etiquette to not forget these folks when a film is successful. when you do not display such ‘manners’ the narrative starts turning negative! For it is not just access that many of these people want, not just interviews, but also the ‘perks’. I have said much on all of this many times in the past. This is not to downplay the anti-Bachchan ideological angle which too is a constant.
But as I said yesterday the media otherwise is extremely positive on Paa. The trade is perhaps on its own this time. And yet this shouldn’t make us happy because not every success can be like Paa. What if this were a decently but not superlatively reviewed film with decent but not exceptional word of mouth? In such a scenario it would be harder to advance the true narrative.
In this sense perhaps you and Abhishek might have revealed some of your own numbers. I do however see the problem. For one no one in India knows what the totals are. Whatever the producers or trade figures claim is usually bunk. One can have a sense of range or the magnitude of success but to be precise is impossible. because box office earnings are not accounted for in any comprehensive or above board sense. perhaps you might have provided a rough ballpark number. But secondly there is another issue. If I were you I might not want to provide any numbers with the Congress around! Here’s a party that has hounded you so much including sending tax notices at your hospital bed one would hardly want to take chances with them around!
Frankly the whole media apparatus and the trade one with respect to cinema is an extremely sick one. I have the energy to get down into the weeds but it’s all rather disgusting. This however nonetheless opens onto a larger truth — the ideological one. If it didn’t matter very much why would so many in the media or the trade be so opposed to your success forever? What did your success mean? What did your image represent? Why did the politics of your films disturb? What ‘continuity’ might Abhishek represent that he too gets the same treatment? If these questions were not pertinent the media wouldn’t oppose you so adamantly at every turn. It takes more than a Devi-like Rajesh Khanna hangover for the resistance to be so intense and so constant.
I pity these folks ultimately. There must be easier professions in life than arguing against Amitabh Bachchan, whether yesterday or today..

Well done PAA and team. Auro has become the most popular & favorite and, that is of course because of ours truely. Not much luck for me yet to see the movie on big screen. I’ve been told that I’ll get a DVD (not my choice) of PAA as my B’day (Dec 11) gift. Waited too long watch it on the big screen with the crowd to get the feel how everyone will be appreciating the most famous star on the silver screen. Since, there is no more luck to see on the big screen, may be it is better idea to watch the movie that has everyone excited everywhere. I will still catch it when if it comes to a theatre near by.

Satyam @ 104…..my question is how many people who go to the movies read about these box office numbers. A true lover of cinema will go to the movie no matter what the numbers are, they get motivated to go when other regular movie goers come back with positive reviews. People like the Nahatas talk, but who listens except for the people in the industry and distributors. Like Mr. Bachchan said yesterday, nobody can challenge the will of the people, if people like it they will go. PAA has proven it beyond a doubt just as Shankarabharanam, which had a very slow start. Movies when are made understanding that audience are not stupid, they will succeed. Most people think that movie goers are stupid and of low intelligence, which is not the case. Even Mr. Bachchan on several occasions expressed his surprise that audience notice things in movies that he thought would never get noticed.
Numbers and reviews are reeled out just to irritate people who are easy to get irritated. When you watch siblings fight, you will notice that one always provokes the sibling who gets easily provoked, and ignore the one who refuses to react. By this I do not mean that one should keep quiet and put up with injustice, but react if it worth reacting. Numbers and reviews, in my opinion are not worth reacting to, listen to the peoples voice and right now they all are rejoicing because they finally got a movie that appeals their intelligence.

When Amitabh Bachchan Corporation’s (ABCL) Paa released on December 4, it had a clear run till the next big-ticket release Yash Raj Films’ Rocket Singh-Salesman of the Year on December 11. Paa, which was released with 500-odd prints, and made at a cost of Rs 14.5 crore, according to industry estimates, opened weak but picked up dramatically and grossed Rs 35 crore as on December 12 in the domestic and global market. Paa is likely to go on to make profits too, but this hasn’t been the case with many films that had bunched-up release this year, thanks to a two-month shutdown because of the multiplex-producer row.
Add the global economic slowdown, which impacted overseas revenues adversely, and the year is clearly turning out to be Bollywood’s annus horribilis. No wonder, the focus is back to basics — content and release timing — something that seems to have worked to Paa’s advantage. Says UTV Motion Pictures CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur, “There’s a renewed focus on the script and stories.” Besides, a lot of importance is being put on the release window — films released in a bunch eat into each other’s revenues. From now on, producers and distributors will ensure each movie has a chance at the box-office, say analysts.

I want to remind you, Abhi, and AB Corp to stay vigilant about PAA’s box office numbers! Certain biased trade sites are grossly under-reporting Paa’s box office numbers and trending. Paa is still continuing to do do very well at the box office in India. The film has had great repeat value with many families seeing it many times already. I continue to stress how important it is for you, Abhi, & AB Corp to get PRODUCER TOTALS for PAA’s box office to give to media! The numbers need to be released from AB Corp.

PAA is an acclaimed successful film. It’s one of the very few successful films in 2009! So make sure the media reports the truth about its box office. Stay vigilant on the issue!

I forgot to add that the three most biased trade analysts in India are Taran Adarsh, Komal Nahata, and the people behind the laughably inaccurate Boxofficeindia.com. Boxofficeindia, Taran Adarsh, and Komal Nahata ALL need to be investigated and as does their biased reporting for Hindi films in India. It’s time for the industry to band together to have official trade analysts who are properly trained for their jobs do the box office reporting for films. And its time for the box office trade analysts to have more transparency in their reporting that is backed up by concrete facts and real numbers. We need PROOF!! In Hollywood and in the west their box office reporting is extremely transparent, accurate, and backed up with hard concrete facts and numbers!! Until that happens those in Hindi films need to have the production houses do the box office reporting and report the daily and weekly numbers to the media so that accurate reporting can be done for each film. But I re-itertate that Boxofficeindia, Taran Adarsh, and Komal Nahata need to be investigated and so does their inaccurate biased reporting. And their needs to be an official body of box office trade analysts that are trained for the job and held accountable with more transparency when it comes to the box office. Lots of money and credibility are on the line for films for everyone involved. So misreporting, under-reporting, and biased reporting based on agendas that skew the truth about the box office of films can no longer be tolerated! Please look into it.

Delighted and overjoyed that you have FINALLY ceased hiding in embarrassment and relaxed into accepting the praise, because most of us have been celebrating on your behalf since the 3rd December! I had an idea you were embarrassed by the extreme reactions, I said so straight after the premiere - and it is that very unassailable modesty, gentleness of spirit that endears us and makes us love you even more. You are a unique soul, a warm, loving, benevolent and compassionate person who happens to be immensely talented, intelligent and accomplished at anything he turns his attention towards. As I have been repeating for many days now, please do revel in every moment of recognition, you have worked incessantly throughout the year in all circumstances and conditions and your labour shall not pass unrewarded! I do believe this period in your career is yet another turning point and you are destined for many hundreds more ‘success interviews‘; but I have to say I worry at the effect this is having on you. The toll on health certainly is a pressing concern even though you are physically a picture of wellness and radiance, yes dapper and well turned out too; you are still human and do need to take care. Also, why must it take the love of ‘the enitre world’ to induce genuine smiles Mr Bachchan and now you have it again, will that be enough?! I wonder. I have not always been with you, much of your career happened before my time; but I haven’t been able to leave your world through any circumstance since entering it and don’t consider it a viable possibility in the future! You occupy a space in my heart that would be overridden with grave difficulty … and to coin your phrase … may it ever remain so! Whatever you have, is not really sought; just the person you are.

Hi Mr. B. To add further to your accolades, I read that the Guinness Book is going to give you and Abhishek an entry as the first father son duo to switch roles in a movie. Exciting!!! I also read that the Progeria Research Foundation of the US has expressed a keen interest in seeing the film and using it as an educational vehicle. Finally, two brothers with progeria, Ali Hussain and Ikramul Khan have been granted aid by the Bihar government based on the film. This is all so exciting because I think you are doing so much for other people, as you have always done, but now it will be recognized, worldwide. Get ready for stardom in the US!!! I think there are going to be many more people here after Paa who recognize you. The father-son Bollywood soap is lush in music and scenery but over-ripe in length.

For “Paa,” veteran Indian superstar Amitabh Bachchan submitted to four hours of makeup to turn him into a 12-year-old boy named Auro, who is afflicted with a rare genetic defect that accelerates the aging process so rapidly that he looks nearly 80. Although the makeup, involving a large prosthetic head, is pretty good, it wasn’t worth the effort, for the film is no more than a tedious, over-long Bollywood soap opera.
Handsome Amol (Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh’s son) and beautiful Vidya (Vidya Balan) meet at Oxford — or Cambridge, since settings at both universities are used. Amol pursues Vidya, even though he plans to concentrate solely on becoming a reforming politician back in India. In any event, Vidya becomes pregnant, the couple break up — but Vidya does not have the abortion Amol thinks she has had. Vidya becomes a gynecologist in Lucknow and raises Auro with the help of her mother (Arundhati Naag.) while Amol, also living in Lucknow, becomes a crusading member of Parliament.
With a loving mother and grandmother and attending a posh private school, where he is treated kindly, Auro, who is precocious and witty, is happy. It is there, at an awards ceremony, that father and son cross paths and the politician takes an interest in Auro, unaware that he is actually his son.
All of this happens early on in the film but writer-director R. Balki stretches out “Paa,” which is “Pa” in Hindi, to an unconscionable 145 minutes that seems all the longer since it’s clear that father and son will eventually learn of their relationship. Meanwhile, time is running out for Auro, who is approaching 13, an age beyond which few with his condition live. Bachchan’s Auro is fairly convincing; his costars are as effective as the genre permits. The film abounds with lush music, scenery and fancy editing flourishes in the elaborate Bollywood tradition.

IBOS have their latest update incidentally.. Paa has 20.25 crores off a 27.33 crore gross. The film shouldn’t fall by more than 30-35% in week 2, well below industry average. It’s set for a 45 crore gross at the very least.

Success can be very humbling. One realizes its sudden impact when a dream comes true through sheer hard work and commitment. Success is an evidence of the qualities that make it happen, though success is not a validation of the cause of an undertaking or its moral basis.
The other day, while idling with some friends, I was discussing the different periods and types of successful films in our industry vis-á-vis the political status of the nation as one society in the same period. A curious coincidence is that the era of the ‘Angry Young Man’ began near about the time of the Indo-Pak war for the liberation of Bangladesh and it gave space to pop romance around ’84-‘85 after the assassination of Mrs Gandhi.
That’s why I say success is not a validation of the cause of an undertaking or its moral basis. Success does not justify anything of that sort. That’s the humbling part. It is a shame that one has to feel humble after achieving success after one’s sincere effort and toil.
Any child, not necessarily handicapped, learns the concepts of moral values and character in an image that shapes his own soul. He is often left bewildered by the chaotic evidences offered to him by the adults.
Aesthetic art or romanticism has the potential to deliver that to the child – a view of life driven by values, a life in which his choices are rational, virtuous and ethical.
But if the child is taught that values are associated with pain, then success hurts. On the contrary, when aesthetic art or romanticism teaches a child to associate values with pleasure, success becomes the justification of the effort… but that’s a Utopia.
The reality is that at a very young formative age a lethal dichotomy is introduced in his consciousness – the ethical versus the pragmatic; the pragmatic part is that success must pass through the doors of appeasement – and appeasement demands the betrayal of personal beliefs, values and ideals.
In your career of 40 years, you have seen success like no one in the industry can even imagine.
Raise a toast to that with pride and don’t shatter the glass out of anger. That anger is the only spark that’s left.
There was a chap who asked me, “Tell me Sudhir, going by genre, all of AB’s angry-man thrillers are the same – see one, you have seen them all – then why do you keep this collection in your stock?”
And my reply to him was, “I don’t see the movie anymore. I just watch Amitabh Bachchan.”
And that is your personal success in my case.

Today I saw a couple of films in the ‘Dino Risi: Comedy with a Twist’ festival at MOMA, most of which I’ve already missed. I saw ‘The Sign of Venus’ and a 2006 interview and documentary called ‘A Beautiful Vacation’ done at the time he turned 90. It was very entertaining with his sense of humor.
Since you posted early today, I hope you got plenty of rest and are still in a festive mood.

First of all congratulations for the success of PAA, saw your movie, Its a masterpiece of your as usual with lots of hardwork & excellent makeup. I wonder, there are only 3 cases of progeria in INDIA and total only 85 cases in the world and we still make movies for them. We have movies for everything in bollywood for almost all of the serious diseases such as CANCER, AIDS, PROGERIA, SCHIZOPHRENIA…and much more, atleast these movies helps such patients morally & also creates public awareness for these diseases.
What else can I say, you have a lot of things to explain/express that you give us through your films & your daily blog without being tired….

Yes, it so sooooo so effervescent with its audacious wit and quickfire delivery… but underneath all the razzle dazzle it is unimaginably torrid.. I have never seen sexier dance moves ANYWHERE ANYTIME EVER … those endless legs displayed to devastating effect in ravishing chorus boy routines … it would have me scratching at the doors of Anthony’s hotel room in Love Lane quicker than… Shanouk in pursuit of a rabbit. I swear no female could possibly resist when he flashes his room number at you!
Maybe we SHOULD put it to the Valorie test, and dicover if she if she lives to tell the tale!

The other being when he asks his BUM - “Tumhein malum hain naa ke mujhe malum hain?” - Oh what maturity in the character.
Wonderful! I am sure it helped many to assess their reactions in their times of shock and tragedy. Auro helps you understand that there is always a positive approach to every challenge or problem. This has been my personal learning from the Movie.

Your movie “Auro” was good.So you had to die in the film to make it HIT again.
Film Casting was rather lucky for you than being a better showpiece.
Abhishek has to improve his acting.The film lacked a good hindi tune as people expected it, without it people dont think that its a film.Songs are advertisements for films promo and also for actors. You missed out that chance although you made it like a “art” film as people in India say.
He has to understand people psyche as like the mindset of the role he is playing.
He will be more famous than u after 12 to 13 more films,If he progresses.I guess so.I could be true, so don’t be jealous of him.
Anyways, I have put my mind so please dont take them seriously, because I am not an actor or anyway related to films or industry.I am writing to a Big person for the first time and I feel “Happy”.

It hasn’t deterred me in the slightest though!

Dear Amitji, Good Evening. I know one thing very well from my experience. The success of any project is in individual successes put together with synergy. Paa also is an example of synergy of best in business. So a film like Paa succeeded because what all went in to its making was thoughtful. Some people see with the heart and mind’s eyes. They see depth in a subject. They see what others would generally miss out. So Paa is a detail in depth of a subject. What ever accolades you gather goes to all those who contributed for success of paa.
We are happy to have shared your anxiety as well as claps. After many decades I went to see a film on first day so that I don’t get any biased opinions. I wanted first hand experience of Auro and paa. I came back asking for a second viewing whenever possible. Now I want to see how technology is used in the film. How nuances are there to appreciate and above all how I can be alone with each character and feel them. So its musical Saa Re Gaa Maa Paa as I had said earlier.
Hope every film does like Paa where you are there. Vidya and Abhi also need special compliments for their Paa and Maa roles. Wish everyone a future success because of Paa experience.
