DAY 576

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Posted on: November 18, 2009 - 11:14 pm

Chennai                             November 18, 2009                     Wed 11 : 13 PM

15   Days  to  PAA           releasing   December 4th   2009

The great Ilaiyaraja, pristine in white and just off from Balaji at Tirupati, conducts me at Prasad Studios for the song from PAA. I did it once when he was not around. I did it today when he was around. The world seemed different. The quality improved. The reason for his hand gestures as he conducted the rhythms poetic and his demeanor and expressions synonymous with the flow of the notes he had composed in his private room just behind and beyond the studio.

His eyes wild and bright. His language measured and pointed. His reason behind every note definite and pure and his decision final on the output. The master, the maestro, the magician the ‘little Raja’.

I am struck with emotion. It works its way up the belly through to the chest and heart and waits to explode into the eye lids. And I return back to the Hotel and I believe that I will wait till the morrow for the senses to dissolve before I can go any further …

Good night, my dears ..

I shall return before the morrow is over ..

Amitabh Bachchan

    Dear Amitji
Even if we are unlucky to get to the premier, photographs will be really nice to be on the blog..For me and my family, Paa will be on the first day..as usual in UAE, Paa would be released a day earlier than in India…
Hope ur trip to Chennai was good..Illayaraja, the maestro of music shows his excellence in both songs and background music, what can one say about excellence…
“Excellence can be obtained if you:
    ..care more than others think is wise;
    ..risk more than others think is safe;
    ..dream more than others think is practical;
..expect more than others think is possible.”

  18. Kartika Kumar Bhardwaj says:

For some reason I have been unsuccessful in posting long comments. Anyways i appreciate your supporting the Jodhpur Mahraja’s foundation. It is sad that people start these charitable foundations after a sad awakening. Unfortunately, the majority of people in India rae denied quality health access if they do not have the money. I wish something can be done and we could rectify this. Your blog may be a perfect to start a health care foundation for the needy. Being a physician I would like to do something. I am doing my share of charities and fundraisings not really knowing if that is going in the right place!!!!!!!!!! Suggestions???

  19. SP says:

although not in a bad , abusive sort of way, I was really curious why a 13 year old spoke like that. I am sure Balki and you have all done enough research and know what you are doing. I was simply curious. Can’t wait to watch the movie. Good Luck for PAA!

    Dearest Mr Bachchan

Thank you so much sharing those emotions and the magical atmosphere of the music recording with us. Just as you can infuse a single word … Paa … with an entire lifetime of meaning, so these sublimely chosen words tonight have transported us into realms of feeling that transcend … mere words…. I think it will take the music - and your voice - to complete the sensation for us… and make our hearts and our eyes overflow too… and that hour of revelation is not too far off now.

May you sleep so well tonight.. and with words of love in your ears..

    With all my love, Daisy

  50. Jasmine of London says:

So relieved you have decided no to embark on a return travel in the same day. At least this way you will hopefully enjoy total peace for a space of time!

And what a beautiful description of your collaboration with the genius musical maestro, Ilaiyaraja which I am sure will be a nothing short of exquisite! Its hard to believe the ‘Paa song’ could have improved much more, most were quite overwhelmed by the impact it created on first hearing.
I think every artist will have achieved his ultimate objective if he can stir deep rooted emotion from within the soul of another and indeed the tears shed are a gift of release for the appreciator too. His music is magic, its beautiful and now I cannot wait until I am able to indulge in the rapturous feelings you are experiencing!

Mr. Bachchan, the emotion you write with is very palpable indeed I can feel the intense sensation within my heart as I read your words. But it is a concern that you must beyond the point of exhaustion at the moment and do wish you were not alone in your emotional conditional, albeit with joyful emotions. I hope you are able to your recover strength and senses as you sail blissfully through a peaceful nights sleep, no doubt enveloped by the sweet melodies that you have absorbed today. Delighted to that your trip was most fruitful!

I may return again since I am literally just home from work, but for now wishing you a very goodnight and the sweetest of dreams.. Pease rest well Mr. Bachchan

    All my love as ever,

    Jasmine
    xx

    Dear Friends,

Shankar, Sharmila, Aishwarya, Archana, Ramanathan, Vikas, Manish, Jasmine(s), Sudhir, Satyam, Devkishin, and all

I felt like I have got my yellow line from Amithji. I was following this blog for since March when I heard that Amithji has written about PAA. Everytime, I was writing about Ilaiyaraaja only and requesting AB to meet IR and write his views.

( I was writing about IR in this blog and about AB in all IR communities where I am member! ).

Today, AB has just recorded his heartfelt firsthand impression which is exactly like mine when I had opportunities to see his recordings in eighties.

Though AB never gave yellow line for me, today he has given me whole blog posting, thats what I feel. Enough for life time!

    Just thought of sharing.

    Regards-CSR

I am listening to Paa, the title song, sung by you. Hats off to you. I am thrilled to the core, such a fantastic job. If not told, nobody could even guess in wildest dream, that it is you. Amazing, you are genius.

I couldn’t resist coming to blog and comment. Wish you all the best.

  72. Valorie Adams, your poet says:

In today’s short but LIVELY post, you have written:

“I am struck with emotion. It works its way up the belly through the chest
and heart and waits to explode…” hmmmm…Interesting to hear you express your feelings on the subject…..so, here’s a little perspective for you…take that emotion you felt…now multiply it by infinity…that’s how I feel every time I hear your voice, see you on screen, read your words here or receive even the tiniest of ‘golden’ responses from you. Just thought you might like to know.

Love you more than yesterday, but less than ‘the morrow’…

To Dr Shashi Mohan Sharma- London,

I have just read your comments #141 on day 338 about being confused re my marriage dates on my entry #37. I said 11 and a half years of marriage, that is correct, but I had put down 2007 instead of 1997, that is what marriage does to your state of mind after so many years!! I got engaged in November 1996.

    My beloved Mr. Bachchan,

What a lovely post in honour of the maestro, the great Ilaiyaraja. I must confess that I began reading about him and his works only after you mentioning him and he seems to be a genius at his work. Wow! What a collaboration, one great Genius works with another and it isn’t really a wonder that you are so moved with emotion! I am sure the maestro was equally floored with your dedication and talent too. It must have been a VERY glorious day indeed.

Hoping you are catching up on enough rest. These last weeks have just been work, work and work for you and I am sure until the release of PAA it isn’t going to be any different. Please do take care of that back of yours and give it it’s needed rest. Your spine has a tremendous job to do, carrying the great Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. What a responsible task!!!

Sending you loads of love and wishing you great portions of energy to manage all you have on your plate.

    Love and more-Lily D’Penha-Frankfurt-Germany.

  84. Satyam says:

As one of Raja’s great fans I am certainly moved by your post here. It is fitting for a giant who deserves every bit of the reverence he gets. And again I continue to be as touched by the genuine sense of respect and humility you always bring to the table in all such situations. I was as I mentioned in the response yesterday as struck by the fact that you really made various regional media outlets a part of the conversation.

    good to see bhai,

the poetic seeds of bachchan are still alive some where in our minds and these petals spread fregrance when ever we think of babu ji,

i can under stand the fear and eagerness of PAA’s release.

Both the Paa (babu ji’s birth anniversary

    and
    PAA’s release.

the self healing qualities are with every object, if you see all the medicines are made with the extract of available things.

The perception is your own thoughts which echos from your inner, you hear what u want to hear you see what u want to see.

If you ask a saint whom u r talking to he will say i was talking to god, you ask where is he i cannot see him, he will say he is inside me, you say okey he is inside you thats why i am not seeing him, he will say look deep into your soul you will also find him.

so the emotion which you have shared with illayaraja, are replica of which you have thought off as you were thinking that you are talking to your paa.

  95. rochelle says:

So where will we find this new improved version of the song? It sounds as if you have just had quite an emotional experience and now you must recover.

I have just had a small emotional experience in the Brooklyn Museum seeing the exhibit ‘Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present’. It of course started with video footage and photos of Elvis and had plenty of early punk for me to also enjoy. I did get emotional at seeing the Cramps at CBGB’s the night I was there standing in the front in 1993. I think I’m too short to be seen and someone is blocking me from the back.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you before tomorrow’s over for you to continue with your experience.
    Pleasant dreams.

He is a great music director with great knowledge… I always admire him as a great Music Director in Indian Cinema ! He is maestro in what he does and in what he produces from it… Just ears are not sufficient, the entire body flows and shakes with his music…. We are lucky that in our PAA moive he is our music director….

When I watch the trailer of Paa movie, his few seconds music brought me in tears and tears flowing ! Imagine with the whole movie.. I am The great Ilaiyaraja, greatest fan… May such person live in this world who creates, lives and sleep with the music and is our the only one maestro “The great Ilaiyaraja”

  133. Lily D'Penha-Frankfurt-Germany says:

    My beloved Mr. Bachchan,

Before I wind up for the day and retreat for the night I must let you know this:

Yesterday I visited PAA’s website and clicked on each and every chapter. What moved me most and had me literally weeping (unconsciously) was seeing you during the breaks from the make-up session of Auro eating wee little biscuits and looking around helplessly with that VERY HEAVY weight on your head. Watching you wipe the uneasiness in your mouth with tissues constantly while the talented lady got Auro’s teeth fixed and you patiently sitting upright in that chair made my heart melt. I can’t imagine you having it on your head (The head over the head I mean) for hours together and then sitting for hours together before the shoot to have the head done with such great patience is mind-blowing. A man of your fame and stature who has been there and done that once again goes through this ordeal to make yet another remarkable film that involves so much sacrifice, dedication and self-discipline. I am truly overwhelmed and like many a times before, I bow my head in deep respect to the wonderful man you are. I pray PAA gets the success it so rightfully deserves and you are crowned the greatest actor of all times. Well for me, you already wear that crown long, long ago.

    Love-Lily D’Penha-Frankfurt-Germany.

  139. Jasmine of London says:

    My dearest Mr. Bachchan,

You illustrate the scene at the studio so vividly. I have only ever seen a couple of photographs of the ’little Raja’ himself, but he did bear the countenance of the ‘archetypal’ musical maestro: wide impassioned eyes that held a faraway gaze and just an overall appearance of eccentricity, the kind geniuses of any artistic genre tend to have!
Normally clips of ‘the recordings’ or the ‘making of’ songs for films become available for viewing, so I hope this little episode will be at some stage too. It would be lovely to watch you both infuse talents. In fact you were adorable to watch at the V&S studios for Aladdin, so focussed and ever the professional behind the mic, one would be forgiven for thinking you had been a musician everyday of your life!

Reflecting on the issue of the ‘sublime passage of time’ once again, I have just realized it is Thursday in the morrow already and indeed almost time for Bigg Boss again - astonishing how quickly the days pass when following you! And at the risk of repeating myself, what an gruelling schedule you are so heavily immersed in at the moment. I know you enjoy it and it is blessing to be busy, but … please look after yourself in the process too.

Thank you for writing and allowing us the intoxicating pleasure of sharing in your emotions .
It is pleasing to see you retire to sleep before midnight at least and I hope you wake thoroughly refreshed and still reeling from your magical musical experience!

Wishing you a very goodnight and a safe journey home should you set off early.

    My love,

    Jasmine

Daisy M, about that mountain lion, itinerant, because he never stays around long at any one time…in Texas these cats have a huge range, sometimes of several hundred miles…so like Hank Williams, he’s a ramblin’ man…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi9GuQofDLc&feature=player_embedded

And your comment about the zoo, as well as Sharmila’s, reminded me of that Rilke poem about the panther… also reminded me of why I stopped visiting zoos eons ago. The caged cats and the smart animals like gorillas were the animals whose plight just made me too miserable to contemplate them with anything but pain…I don’t want to make you sad by talking further about it, but…

My philosophy is that if we can’t leave these animals enough land to live on as they were meant to, then we should not get to observe them; I think all animals should be observed only in the wild, the way they do safaris in Africa, and sadly enough, even in some of these areas/situations many wild animals, whose habitats are being encroached and yet encroached upon, are only living in a larger kind of zoo.

Love ya both for loving your cats so much!

    Hello Sirji,

Nice to even read about the way you did the song. You have such a beautiful way of giving credit to others. Too… many things to learn from a legend like you. God bless you, Sir. One thing nowadays, that I miss from your blog is all those nice small sayings/quotations that you would always post.

Like the one Shankar — Comment 5 has said about excellence. It is so.. so.. good.
what can one say about excellence…
“Excellence can be obtained if you:
    ..care more than others think is wise;
    ..risk more than others think is safe;
    ..dream more than others think is practical;
..expect more than others think is possible.”

SHANKAR, thanks for sharing this quotation it’s really nice.

Amitji, once again Good luck for the movie PAA… and we your fans will always be there for you.

“Excellence can be obtained if you:
    ..care more than others think is wise;
    ..risk more than others think is safe;
    ..dream more than others think is practical;
..expect more than others think is possible.”

SHANKAR, thanks for sharing this quotation it’s really nice.

Amitji, once again Good luck for the movie PAA… and we your fans will always be there for you.

My love for you will always be little more than the rest so Love you and your whole family as always

Hey there, Mr. Bachchan…I just read something interesting on the internet…
I don’t know if you are familiar with ‘PEOPLE’ magazine or not - there is now a
‘PEOPLE/INDIA EDITION’ but I can’t seem to find a way to subscribe to it…I welcome any suggestions with that predicament…but that’s neither here nor there…I have been a subscriber to PEOPLE/USA for about 20 years now…several years ago, PEOPLE began naming some famous person as “THE WORLD’S SEXIEST MAN”…In years past, they have named Brad Pitt, TWICE…and George Clooney…you get the idea…Well, they announced this year’s winner today…Can you guess who?…Johnny Depp..Yes, they named THAT Johnny Depp as ‘The World’s Sexist Man’…boy, and I do mean “BOY”, did they ever miss the boat…Sorry, Johnny Depp, but…I’m gonna make a phone call right after I push ‘Submit Comment’…See what I can do about next years nominations…these ‘PEOPLE’ have NO idea what (or WHO) they are missing…

Ilayaraja is a great talent of course!

Why is it that you make everybody look so big in front of you when you are easily the greatest of all! Imagine what must be happening to all those you work with you!! They may not be able to sleep nights! And of course this is no exaggeration.

Ok, I am a bit intrigued about your height in Paa. Is it the camera angle with makes you look shorter? It’s amazing how they can make a 6-3 person look so small!

    Do tell us !!

    Dear Amitji,

This show, Big Boss 3 has gotten quite ugly. It makes me sad that humans are that insensible, like Raju (who I adored as he made people laugh), Vindu (I never liked from begininng), Rohit (I never liked from beginning) and now joing that camp is Poonam, Claudia and possibly Pravesh.

This week Raju, Rohit and Vindu need to be evicted for plotting since like Week 2/3. That is especially unfair, also Tanaaz should be allowed back in. I think all the plotters should be evicted and all those who played fair should be allowed in. Please let Big Boss know and Colors, as this is EXTREMELY UNACCEPTABLE. Something needs to be done to put this show back on its track……

Please have this taken care of immediately,

  168. Sharmila says:

    Dear Lion King,

Lovely to hear your day in Chennai in such a short yet magical manner. Raja Sir is a phenomenon, and he has in the past been south india’s best kept secret to the world. AR had worked with Raja Sir on the keyboard when AR started of. Yes, in white is what he dresses in at all times. IR and K Balachander continue to get accorded with the highest respect from one and all, unstaggering and unwavered.

Mani Ratnam had one said Ilayaraja would look at the scene once, and immediately start giving notes to his assistants, as a bunch of musicians, hovering around him, would collect the notes for their instrument and go to their places. A director can be taken by surprise at the speed of events.
No wonder your day has been an emotional one for the maestro indeed weaves magic with his rythymic gestures.

This song happens to be one of my favorites of his composition starring a young Rajnikanth, the background score is sensational and one tends to get so lost in the music that it is difficult to fight those tears that well up.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J4uLflEB40

I am down with the flu ( not swine ! ) and will have to postpone my return to HK by a day or two.
Enjoy Chennai, with all my love..

Though I am unable to name the movies but I still have thoroughly enjoyed some of the erstwhile director’s music, Illiyaraja is a magician in weaving out melodies that can, yes I agree ,cast such a spell on the senses that one’s eyes well up with emotion no doubt about that, Mr. B.I am sure he has done full justice to “PAA” too we can look forward to some great stuff from him.
Hope u r enjoying ur stay here, take care love and regards

Jasmine J - Thanks for your wishes, down with the flu though so the shopping has come to a screeching halt.

Daisy M - Yes, I thought as much that the primates would be confined by electrical wiring running up the trees. Even at the night safari the animals look dazed, they are made to work in two shifts, the morning being the regular zoo. Exploitation at its worst. The space for the jaguars is horrifying, reminds me of the time when circuses in India would have these magnificient animals in the smallest of cages, not anymore though thanks to Maneka Gandhi.

  186. Sudhir says:

    For AB,

Writing in from a net café in Shivaji Nagar. This entry is costing me real money by the minute (as opposed to the free service in my workplace). So I will try to make it worthwhile.

Barkha Dutt tweeted on the twitter that the anthem makes her cry (mushy mushy!) while it is mentioned in passing that reliance is using ‘Stand up for the anthem.. or I will tell Abhishek… err Paa’. She probably realized later that Vande Mataram is not the national anthem of her country!

The media actually trivializes anything that it touches, especially commercial products.

Even in cases other than commercial products, take the example of politicians who are not in power. Media presents them as opportunists and manipulators which they certainly aren’t. Anyone who has direct contact with a politician will admit that. A politician in India is someone who feigns to know about human rights and those rights that are permitted in our constitution - some actually do know them. Most others are in wonderland.

Another example is an insouscient looking poser, “Should woman be allowed equal opportunity in the armed forces to be on the front lines during combat.” Ms Barkha had to clam up because she was quietly informed by a more learned insider that a bullet can’t tell the difference between a man and a woman… which for some reason seems to have surprised her superior intelligence…

Coming back to the release of Paa…

I hope you are also using the calculation tricks that you learnt during Teen Patti. Seems like you are going to need some luck to break through the recession in the cinema halls. Some real big ones have been buried piously in the recent weeks.

Wanted (searching for viewers); Blue (sank in the caribean); Azab gazab (did the Indian rope trick); Love Aaj-Kal (by-passed, for past, of past); Aladin (Flew on a carpet over the cuckoo’s nest).

Kurbaan is a non-starter, it will be sacrificed on Bakri Eid coming Friday.

Paa appears to be the last one left for the industry to look forward to in 2009.

Indeed, the devil is in the detail. And that’s not an idea.

    All the best,

    Love

    Sudhir

You have aroused my deep interest in Ilaiyaraja. Unfortunately I am not conversant with his works so far. Now I will have to watch PAA with full attention to the music of the film also. There seem to be many surprises and attractions in PAA which will be difficult to absorb in one sitting. I will have to see PAA at least three times, first for technicalities, second for acting of Big B and now third for the music of the great maestro Ilaiyaraja.

Pray huge success to PAA and the event at Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan

  189. Moonie says:

Its indeed sweet of you sharing your emotions with the FMxT. In same way I have an advice for you. I think you are getting just too emotional about the movie. How so ever a masterpiece it might be, yet, there needs to some amount of detachment to that you can put things in perspective. I am not faulting your emotions, just I think you are raising your expectations also too high in scenario where sometimes the audience can be brutal, may not share your sensitivity. I just hope if that happens you are not affected too much.
anyways, more power to you AmitJi. Our good wishes to you always.

  190. rochelle says:

For the second day in a row, a comment of mine has not been posted and I had to resubmit it.

Once again I have to embarrass myself by having to look up Ilaiyaraja since I’m the only one here who doesn’t know who he is. I haven’t learned all the Indian music composers and haven’t memorized the names of all the composers for your films. I hadn’t remembered that he did the music for Cheeni Kum. So I learn something new every day it seems.

This morning a casting director contacted me to try out for being an extra. So early tomorrow morning I must take subways and a bus all the way to Jamaica Queens to see if I get it. The casting director said he contacted me because I look like a school teacher! So we’ll see what happens.

Post Script Today Indiraji would have been 92.. even if I do not like her so much.. she was the best International leader that India produced with all her shortcomings and slapping on of the Emergency rule.. Indira was really India during her first term in the office of the prime minister.. She scores much above AB Vajpayee who comes a distant second on post-Nehru India..

    My dearest Amithji,

    How are you ?

Are you back in mumbai? It was sooo nice to read your account of Ilaiyraja.
I too, am a big fan of his music.

Short but very sweet post. If we get to read few lines everyday from you, that is enough, because you see by now all fans here have become totally addicted to the blog! The happiness we feel when we see a new post from you cannot be described. Thanks again for connecting with us, inspite of anything. :) :) :) :) :0)

Cannot believe that Vindu is talking about nominations, the minute he is out of the jail! This week BB should put him up for eviction without second thought!Pravesh did the right thing by tackling rohit & vindu straight on! Hope somebody puts some sense in Raju, so far he was the favourite to win the show, but after teaming with the wrong guys, it is becoming doubtful.
Rohit is again trying his best to gain some sympathy from others. I am sick of hearing him say “mein aisa nahin hoon”. What a joke!
Vindu did ask a very sensible question to poonam.
Now my loyalties has shifted to Pravesh. But I still like Raju. The way he was talking to the insect, during his solitary, was good, could have been more hilarious, but given the situation he was in, I think he could come up with only that much.

    bye for now,
    take care,
    my love to you always,

    “Music magic

Amitabh Bachchan effortlessly sang the title song of Paa in a child’s voice

    By Subhash K Jha
Posted On Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 02:16:24 AM

We bet you’ve never heard anything like this before. Literally. On Tuesday, Amitabh Bachchan recorded the title song for Balki’s Paa in the voice of a 12-year-old and that too without the help of technology.

Music director Aadesh Shrivastava says, “I thought I would initially record the song in Amitji’s normal voice and later use technological enhancement and modify it to make it sound like a child’s. However, Amitji was firm that I wouldn’t have to do anything of that sort and that he will sing in a child’s voice without any help. He went on to do just that.”

Aadesh, who handled the daunting task of recording music maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s tune in Amitabh’s voice, adds, “It is originally a tune created by Raja sir (Ilaiyaraaja). Normally, I’d never even dream of touching his tunes but I have worked as a drummer for him on Sadma (1983) and he sent this song from Chennai for Amitji to sing it in Mumbai.”

Aadesh predicts that the song will be an instant hit with children. “Amitabh does not sound like a grown-up man imitating a child. Don’t ask me how he has managed to do it. I just sat there stunned.”

    Here’s the song:

Finding no words Mr.Bachchan.. Raja is our musical identity - it is as simple as that.. Couldnt control our emotions when some body as great as you shares some kind words on him..

This is my first comment in this blog and Believe me I haven’t watched a full length hindi movie so far in my life.. Paa is going to be the first one. I may not understand even a single hindi word; but that is not an issue.. I am going to watch this movie just for two reasons.. One for a great man who has a greatness to share some good words on our Raja.. two just for one & only Raja..

    Take care Sir..

    Good day Mr. Bachchan!

This is the first time I have ever read one of your blog entries. I have obviously been hearing about it for a couple of years now! I have like this major attitude… thought its not so cool to read your blog because everybody else reads it. I am a gemini and kind of like being different. But actually am quite sweet inside me heart! :)… so see? I did check out your entry! And guess what… i loved it. its nice to see you reaching out… i know you are well known for it but i am really seeing proof of it now… saw your interview with Omar quereshi on Zoom this evening and I generally surf through channels…( not a great TV person i am)but something made me stay on zoom. I guess it was the way you were sitting.. with pride and dignity and honesty. you spoke with an earnestness that was true. At work today… there was dishonesty… there are days when i don’t deal well with it. where i am not so ’such is life’ about it. today was a day like that… when i let a dishonest colleague get to me… affect me.. rule my emotions. and your carriage… made me feel brave again. Thank you. Your spirit really does reach out. Will read your words often now. God Bless sir!
    regards
    Chandreyee
