DAY 373

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Posted on: May 1, 2009 - 12:37 am

Prateeksha, Mumbai                           April 30, 2009                          Thu  11:54  PM

“How odd is the logic of the mind - it seeks compromises when we are wrong, and it asks for justice when others are wrong !”

Voting has been cast. Hospital visits have been accomplished. Cricket IPL has been witnessed. Views on the blog/print press have been somewhat noted.

Somewhat, because the comment column on the face page is not opening. There are some issues says bigadda.com, which can be rectified perhaps by the morning of May Day,  the 1st of next month. Not too far away, dearies - some hours away actually !!

But the little that I have gathered from the ones that did open, it seems the majority is not in favor of the blog being presented on a plater to the publication. Ok. Point noted and accepted. But in all fairness I must needs give them an audience to assess what they have in store for me. Would you not  ?

Yes I agree, it would rob me of my individuality. It would compel me to write, knowing that I am now bound by commitment to do so. My effort would not be free and distanced from any compulsion. There would most certainly be an element of submission, when indeed all that I have been wanting to achieve is a connection which has never succumbed to this.

Voting was a must. As a citizen of India, it became my Constitutional Right to do so. It has been the most enduring and remarkable feature of Independent India, when all around about it, has displayed an uncertain political atmosphere.

The polling station was at Jamna Bai School in JVPD Scheme, Juhu. The school where Abhishek and Shweta used to go in the early years of study in India and Mumbai. It was nostalgic to be in its precincts again. But it was madness to be outside it after having cast the vote. The media, both electronic and print and radio descends upon you like a ravenous beast, salivating at the mouth for the delicious meal they wish to devour that very instant.

The shoving and pushing and stampeding by the press is not so much the desire to document an information. The possibility of the commerce that it generates, is what the rush is all about. That one exclusive moment, which shall make them stand apart in the eyes of the editorial by the end of the day. That one photograph, that one electronic bite. That is it. Nothing more.

So when the four of us are asked by paparazzi, to show our fingers in acknowledgment of us having punched our votes, we show it to them. It is another matter that, the Government marks our middle finger with an indelible ink, to avoid duplication and therefore unfair electoral procedures. Showing of the middle finger in the Western world apparently has different connotations. So I guess, in usual fashion, that is all that the press shall flash tomorrow !! And for those that may miss it here is the photo..!!

waomxh

Alright.. so that was done and over with !! We shall now know the value of that finger by the 16th of May 2009, when counting shall be over and the results for the new Government will be announced.

The IPL was interesting. Some predictable results , others not so. It is warming up in So Africa for the semi final positionings and the coming days shall see heart stopping action and play. But in between all this was the visit to the Ambani Hospital to see friends in distress and illness.

Mrs Hiroo Johar, wife of Yash Johar and Mother to Karan Johar, with whom I made ‘Dostana’, ‘Agnipath’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, ‘Kabhi Alvida na Kehna’ and Jaya did, ‘Kal ho na Ho’, has had a surgery and was recovering well. She has been extremely close to us and in particular to Jaya and Shweta. Shweta is the daughter she never had and they share a unique relationship.

Her back has been troubling her for long and needed surgery. That went off well and she now recuperates in her room. She is her optimistic cheerful self and we spend time with her and Karan. John Abraham has come to visit too and we all catch up. Knowing his closeness to Dhoni, I complain to John about Mahi not responding to the message of greeting I had sent him on his decoration of the Padma Shri. He says he shall connect me immediately right away. I stop him. Ask him to look up at the TV - Chennai is playing Royal Rajasthan and Dhoni is very much on the field - IN SOUTH AFRICA  !!

I had wished Harbhajan too on his Padma Shri and we had spoken to each other about my message to Mahi. He had ,even, graciously passed on my greetings to him. But still no response. Must have been busy. John has given me his mobile now and said he shall have a word with him on this. No sweat. So long as Dhoni keeps whacking the hell out of the opposition, I am fine.

Also at the Hospital sadly, are a few other friends too.

Prakash Mehra, the director of some of my most significant and most successful films lies in the ICU. When I go up to him he has difficulty in recognizing me. It is most depressing to see my contemporaries in this way. We made ‘music’ together Prakash ji and myself - Zanjeer, Hera Pheri, Muquaddar ka Sikandar, Namak Halal, Lawaaris, Sharabi, Jaadugar. This wizard of a director, now lying inane and without response, eyes open but closed for all purposes, ventilator breathing for him - just so unimaginable. The doctors say he is improving. I hope he recovers well and remains healthy.

Adnan Sami’s father is critical too. I visit him. Adnan not being there, I wish a speedy recovery and come away.

On occasions when I would fall ill and be bed ridden when I was younger, my Father would ask me to will myself into improvement. His own will power was of an amazing quality. He would tell us to keep repeating these words -

“Every day in every way I am getting better and better !”

And we diligently obeyed him.

Today as the lift carries me to different floors of the Hospital, I find the walls filled up with writings and sayings of great men and women; there to impress, to bring courage and hope to those in distress. As I pass along one of the many corridors, my eye falls on something on the wall. Its a board that carries a quotation from some important lady. I forget to note her name. But never do I forget the words - they say in bright and bold colors -

EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY I AM GETTING BETTER AND BETTER… !!

My Father lives with me.. in every step.. of this I have no doubt..

Amitabh Bachchan

I have had my fill of ICU’s personally. They are disturbing locations for me and I would rather not be there.

Dimple Kapadia’s sister, Simple is there too in hospital and I visit her. She narrates an old tale which makes us all quite emotional. I wish her well and a quick recovery.

The neat clean and most efficiently managed Kokilaben Ambani Hospital is a luxury here in our part of the suburbs. The most modern facilities and the most qualified doctors in attendance gives us all a secure confidence. We need hundreds more of such facilities in the country.

EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY I AM GETTING BETTER AND BETTER… !!
I got a shiver straight through me when my eyes scanned that quote since my own grandmother used to say that… almost every day of her life! A bit of a surreal moment there, but lovely thank you.
Your father beyond doubt, was such a wonderful man and how proud would he have been Sir that you remember and took heed of “all” his words of wisdom. I have no doubt he lives with you and watches over you too.

Well done for voting and thank you so much for the pictures .. truly priceless! The media can and will have a field day with it.. I’m sure there will be mouse mats, mugs, t-shirts all with that picture on it in he stores by morning!

Eager to read the rest of the blog but I will return in the morning when more mentally alert.
Thank you so much for posting in spite of your long day and the late hour!!
    Goodnight Sir..
Much love to you and family

  16. Ruchi says:

    Hello Sir,

Voting is indeed an important asset for all citizens. I am happy seeing that all of us(Indians) are trying our best to come out and vote, and not just enjoy the national holiday. Wishing a speeding recovery to all those in the hospital. May god bless all of them. I have been reading your blog since a very long time and I have been enjoying it . Please do not write a blog in the paper as it would be more of a compulsion than your own desire, as you rightly said. The photo is so natural, am sure Jaya Ma’am must be embarassed..That is why the shy pic…you all look great together..God bless you and your family..And all of you keep making all good movies…:)

    Thank you sir,
    Ruchi

  17. Niraj says:

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,

It’s been a pleasure following your blog. Had been some time since I ventured around here and it was nice to see your father’s poem. Hope we will be able to read more.

I have been amazed by the way you keep this blog. It is indeed just a testament of why you are who you are. The never ending stream of blog shows you do everything to the fullest. It is really inspirational to see that even with such a busy life, you have time to write such long and thoughtful entries. I look at your blog when I venture out of important work and start complaining to myself. Then when I see your blog, it’s like seeing a clear patch of light in the midst of darkness that guides the lost to their destinations. It has been a pleasure reading your blog and I hope it will continue for long time. The way AMITABH BACHCHAN-THE LEGEND connects with normal folks as a great human being that I read in this blog is just so momentous that I do not have words to express it. I hope you and your loved ones a good health and ever happier life. Thank you.

    • ab says:

Niraj… thank you .. you are generous

  18. Amrit V S Manku says:

    Mr Bachchan

Thank you for printing the picture of Aishwarya, Abhishek and yourself after showing your middle fingers, after voting at at Jamna Bai School.

I laughed, thinking it was really funny

I read the online article ‘Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya flip the bird after voting’, then read the complete article to get the actual story, of what you three were really doing; having voted and showing the inked finger to the media,

But still I love the picture and think it should be made in to the blog main image (closeup on yourself)…what do you think ?

This must be a stong argument for not allowing the blog to be carried in any paper, they would probably changed the entries for sensationalism.

    Take care

    Amrit V S Manku

Dear Amitji, Nice to see the happy family picture! Jayaji’s expression shows how fed up she is of the constant media intrusion & rightly so. Ur father’s words are so inspirational! And they find echo even today! Hope all ur friends get well soon. Its very sad to hear of Prakash Mehra’s plight. Nice Pic, made my day, as you guys are laughing in pic , I am cracking up too…..
well about the blog/press thingi………may by my views are not that great or important but I feel that it shouldn’t be mixed with press, I really dont know too much but its my instinct that makes me feel some kind of discomfort with it, may be its a kind of confusion too, will be able to give better view if you can give some detail understanding of actual concept.

rest all is fine, was wandering if their is a way we can post our pic at least 1 or 2 on your blog so that u can see us too……….well that mind keeps thinking of funny stuff.
anyways, lots of love and take care precious AB.

  27. Satyam says:

Did see the picture earlier as well as video of the same. This ‘ravenous beast’ as you well describe it demands constant blood as do its audiences and I’m afraid this is the the Faustian pact one enters into when one embarks on a journey as an actor. I nonetheless sympathize with you as the media was a far less offensive ‘beast’ when you first set out into cinema. Those who join the industry today know what to expect and often wallow in it as well because if you don’t have too much to offer as a star or actor you can nonetheless get as much mileage being a celebrity whose primary job is to just be a known face. The same happens in the West. Of course the field has been greatly enlarged so that anchors and actors, politicians and judges on reality shows are all celebrities alike. Even those who engage in dalliances in the Oval office! The media pounces on everyone and the bourgeois audiences that otherwise scream ‘family values’ and ‘morality’ at the drop of a hat are more than happy to consume this constant media feed and derive all kinds of vicarious pleasure in the bargain. Let us consume the affairs of stars so that we can then pretend we lead ‘holy’ lives. It is a kind of pornographic equation where one always ’sees’ to derive pleasure to that one might never have to ‘do’ anything. And of course here there is the added obscenity of constantly allowing oneself the luxury to judge the other (in this case the star). This is not to suggest that the star or the celebrity is blameless of course. If I focus on the other side of this equation most often it is only because demonizing the star is all too easy and all too often in evidence.

This ‘ravenous beast’ nonetheless did not find it fit to mention Prakash Mehra’s ill health. I do not think I am slouch in these matters and yet I did not see such a news story anywhere. I am quite glad you mentioned this even as I am saddened by the news. Mehra’s Zanjeer, Mukaddar ka Sikandar, Lawaaris are to my mind permanent achievements and certainly so within your canon. Of course Namak Halal is one of your most loved films as is Sharaabi. I do not believe these films match the other two though I can concur with the view (offered by an Indian academic in the US whose views I greatly respect) that your performance in Namak Halal is the greatest act of improvisation in Indian cinema. Even the much maligned Jaadugar has some remarkable moments in it and as I’ve said forever I wish I could see the complete cut here. One hopes for the best for Mehra.

  28. Purvi says:

Heya! Good to see the family pics… and simply cracked up! I bet the media will make FULL use of these pictures… but hey, they asked for it init!

Depressing to hear about everyoe who you saw at the hospital- wish them all a quick recovery and many more years of good health!

Ps. you all looked stunning in the pic- bless x

    tc, and enjoy your day/night?

    Love,
    P x

  29. Satyam says:

Part of my # 370 comment as you might not have seen it earlier. In any case it contains a question that I hope will not test your memory:

[On youtube there is a video circulating of a shelved starrer of yours which stars Parveen babi. I am not putting up the link here because I've noticed the comment doesn't go through every time I do this. But basically the film looks like a 'Western' of sorts with you entering a 'bar' with a hat and getting into a fight eventually. The clip looked great. I wonder if this is from Raj Sippy's shelved Taala Chaabi or if it's a different film. Your enlightenment on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Of course in that clip your voice has been dubbed by someone else.

It's unfortunate that there isn't enough of an archiving tradition in India. A lot of this stuff should be preserved. For example I have forever wanted to see the few reels Ghai shot with you for Devaa. Similarly I am very interested in the 'deleted' footage for Jaadugar. films are not preserved or restored in India for the most part so it is probably a strange sort of hope to have, expecting such incomplete footage to see the light of day or 'director's cuts' for that matter. The inability to value cultural archives or to not have the capacity for such 'memory' or at the very least not being able to nurture the institutions that would be involved in such preservation is always a little tragic. It is an obsession with 'archiving' that seems to me to be one of the very distinct fault-lines that separate the West from the 'East' (one is a guilty of a little Orientalism with these labels!). ]

I have just left the Met after having seen the exhibit ‘Cast in Bronze: French Sculpture from the Renaissance to the Revolution’. Much of it was destroyed during the Revolution so many are just reductions and one is an immense left foot.

As soon as I saw those pictures, I said ‘What the @##$#’? but now you have explained it for us in the Western world. The second one with Jaya covering her face seems to indicate that she knows what the West is thinking. I wonder what they will say at work tomorrow when they see those pictures on the computer!

I am in the middle of reading the book ‘India Express: The Future of the New Superpower’ by Daniel Lak, and I happened to be up to the chapter about elections which is very interesting reading for me. They talk about ‘booth capture’ and the South Indian film stars in politics. The author describes the roads in Bihar as “little better than goat tracks-goat tracks made by an elderly, drunken three legged goat, I dare say”.

I’m not sure who Mahi is.

It is so sad to read about Prakash Mehra. I hope he does improve. And I wish all those you had to visit in the hospital speedy recoveries. I hope you are permanently finished with your visits to ICU’s.

I did notice the blog acting strange at different times today. Good luck with that and good luck with the IPL.( It is still foreign to me.)

Hope all your friends in the ICU recover soon.. Its always a burden on the heart to see our loved ones in pain… What a beautiful world this would be if there was no pain or suffering.. Or would it be??? Would we appreciate life better having known pain / suffering??
With all my love as always, Archana Detroit.

    Amitji,

Your day been very packed again, Im glad you understand why many fans are against the blog going to the press. It will take away from it, which up till now been a very unique and strong bond between fans and you.

I am sorry to hear that you had to visit so many people in hospital all in one day, must have been a very emotional situation to be in, I am very sad to hear Prakash Mehra’s situation, I hope him a very speedy recovery, You guys truely shared awesome chemistry together, another film you must have forgotten to add the list is ‘Sharaabi’ which is one of my personal favourites. It would be awesome if ever, to see you both come together to create some more magic on screen for us followers..

IPL really has come a long way since last year, everyone is talking, watching or raving about it, unfortunately I dont have the channel that is airing it. I read a blog Akshay Kumar has started on Facebook, he was talking about getting anxious that the hotel he is staying at did not have the channel, but by the next morning the hotel manager had made some arrangements for him..so he was able to watch his team ‘Dehli Daredevils’, I feel you should maybe enter something like this..as its become a craze, plus the passion you have for the game..could be a step in the right direction.:)

Talk care and thanks for the sharing those motivational words of your father.

    All the best always

    Dear AB,
‘EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY I AM GETTING BETTER AND BETTER’ an apt quote almost in all walks of life-be it sickness-be it depression-be it failure in business-be it seemingly hopelessness.
The most important thing in life is to keep your dear ones happy and that requires immunity from suffering. That immunity comes from deep observation and resolved. Once in a while everyone should visit hospital as it makes one more sensitive.
I am sure your wholesome, all inclusive and deep observation will make right and just decesion and keep this blog as is.

Dear Sir, I got the impression you are leaning towards allowing your blog to be printed by the news paper.

I can only agin reiterate my negativity about this. This forum we have here - we being you and your loyal fans is a unique modem. We are closely connected to you through this forum and to have it printed will sully this.

A blog Sir is a blog, not an editorial piece. As I said in yesterdays posting if they want you to do a regular editorial piece then yes jump at the chance but do not allow your blog to be used by newspaper moghuls looking to increase their sales and distribution figures.

Am sorry to read you have so many friends in hospital right now, I hope your visits raise their spirits and aids their recovery.

As ever my best wishes and good health

I hope all your friends get better and recover fast - these days I too have visited docs so the quote ‘EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY I AM GETTING BETTER AND BETTER’ gives me alot of strength and inner belief that things can only get better.

Have a great day - lots of love!

It was so nice of you to go and visit all your friends and people you know from the industry. I am sure your visit will uplift their spirits to recovery. Wishing and praying for their speedy recovery and well being. With best regards - Rajesh

    Dear AB,
‘Dhoni’ pehaps is sulking due to media’s guilty verdict on his absence to the ceremony without giving him any opportunity to present his side.
Anyway let me ask U why our mind takes side in sports and almost all other matters? Why do our mind tend to invest (emotionally) very heavily for particular team/person/ an artist/ country? Most of the time we tend to enjoy personal sucess instead of sports itself….Why? Why? Why?
Is it identification? Is it glorified/magnified self?

  66. Nimmi Harisinghani says:

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,
Great pic of you’ll giving the finger ! Love it . :)

    Take care.

Hi it was particularly good to read todays blog, you sounded so informal and everything you wrote was heartfelt.. esp. that bit about reading that saying on the wall…

lovely pictures , though i hope the media does not make more of it than it is.. I loved the way Jaya ji is looking down as if to say what do i do with these kids!!!!!

Please please do not succumb to the pressure of using any other vehicle for your blog. we cannot emphasize it enough. write columns or something, but dissociate them from this very sanctified and personal medium.

    regards

  68. Ashesh Dave says:

    Dear Amitji,
I was glad to read your blog in the first of its part- where you had gone for voting/ and ofcourse, the “middle finger” gestures- which again, I believe we, as Indian do have the habit of using middle finger for most of our fine works too- like typing on a key board etc. But, in western country, it has a totally different meaning!!!! I do not think you should go for writing for a newspaper for the blog- it certainly will loose its “personal touch” from your EF- but, again ,you have to make that decision. I am personally touched by some of your friends/ film colleagues being sick and in ICU- particularly , Shir Prakashji, who certainly gave you such wondeful movies- one you forgot to mention- Sharaabi- such a nice movie. He definitely had a nice touch in his movies. We wish and pray for his speedy recovery, including Simple Kapadia, Hiroo Joharji etc.

  74. Rasha Zayed says:

    Dearest Mr. Bachchan,

Yes, the photos are shocking… it was great you took that step to explain it here before they come with big headlines in the papers tomorrow.
Sure, the media people have got now a very ‘delicious meal’ for their upcoming issues.

It took my attention the reaction of both Mrs. Jaya and Abhishek. Abhishek seems unhappy at all, while Mrs. Jaya is shocked by it.

With regard to the issue of the blog being published by the media…of course you already know many of the reasons behind many of us voting NO for it.
We have already given our views and our reasons for being apprehensive about it… and of course you need to assess their offer before giving the final decision. That’s fair and understood. And we definitely trust your decision.

Yes the blog was not in a stable state today. I feel sorry you didn’t get the chance to go through the various and many comments…but it seems it has come to normal by now. That’s good. I like how it appears now and I actually prefer the comments to run in one page rather than the many pages.

Iam sorry you had to do these various visits to many people who were admitted to the hospital. Sure it is saddening and distressing when a friend or some one who is close to us gets into hospital. I wish them all a speedy and full recovery.
And I wish and pray you would never ever get to visit the ICU again.

I loved these words: “Every day in every way I am getting better and better !”
They are very profound and inspirational…of course in all levels and in many conditions in our lives.

Enjoy your time with the IPL,
    And have a peaceful night,

    Love to you,

  83. Abhaya Sharma says:

“How odd is the logic of the mind - it seeks compromises when we are wrong, and it asks for justice when others are wrong !”

    Really Brother!

Very true indeed.. the life takes steps further.. it does pain when one’s own contemporary lie inane and helpless in an ICU ward.. Oh so many people on your pay a hospital visit.. it disturbs yet it also pleases the mind that someone like Amitabh Bachchan too has time for hospital visits to his friends..

On Cricket front.. I read your views on Mahi.. He must really be a busy and a bit upset man.. his team has still not found his way back into to top four.. this despite the fact they are in good nick with both bat and the ball.. I think there is no point in seeking justice from him right now.. and you knew it better when you stopped John.. a good sportsman spirit..

I really feel that tournament is finally clicking well and the teams are all geared up to do as well as is within their capacitiies…

I feel today Mumbai Indians should find themselves on an easy wicket against the SRK’s KKR.. the same may not be true of KXIP as they take up RCB.. I see a greater contest in the second game than the first..

Today is also Maharashtra Day so I wish and extend my friends in India and abroad and in the state the very best.. By virtue of having spend more than half of my life in the state I should naturally qualify to be a Maharashtrian.. but my lack of Marathi knowledge does not help me much.. I am definitely on a wrong foot on this.. no compromise required on this.. I shall learn it at the first opportunity.. and then do justice to my Mumbaikar status..

It would only be very apt to name some top Maharashtrians on my list - Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak ( I am proud that I visited his house in Ratnagiri on Ganapati phule trip) is by far the most important Maharashtrian name that easily comes to the mind.. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar ( I learned about him when I first visited Cellular Jail in Port Blair) and Vijay Tendulkar ( I have only read his translations into Hindi long back during school days..) It would not be possible for me to name many others here from the contemporary men as I have little knowledge and interaction of Maharashtra.. I do follow cricket and the state has provided some of the finest cricketers in Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulakr, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ajit Wadekar and Eknath Solkar.. I think even Farookh Engineer played for Bombay.. Baba Amte is one more name that I must mention.. I do rate him very high.. I have only once seen a marathi paly Atma Gatha by Dr. Shriram Lagu in the lead role.. I could follow it quite a lot..

So much for Maharashtra day and so little for International labours day.. That is not fair Mr Sharma.. Well, International Labours Organisation interests me more than IAEA.. the condition of labour in the world is almost similar and with no compromises.. I have to admit.. it is still not as good as it should be.. The child labour should also be seen from this perspective and I feel we have a job to perform to improve the lives of our labour class.. in their prosperity lies our own prosperity.. in their well being our own well being.. in their success story lies our success.. if some day I was asked by people in authority to choose a new work environment.. I would not hesitate or think twice to seek an appointment at ILO.. (Now this is not politically motivated..not even one bit.. )

I think my post has taken a long route all over again.. I take a break..

Love to you and to the family (extended and Inner)

Great to see you all together on Election Day!
But I really admire you on your Time Management.
You go to so many professional functions and you also visit Hospital to inquire about friends.
And still have an entire day to sit before ‘Box’ and watch IPL!!!
Are you following the Premier league of football even when in India?
Man U is leading the chart.
They were domestic as well as European Champion last year and from the looks of it they can do this time around also.
If that happens it will be a Double- Double.(Like Prakash Mehra giving you Muqaddar Ka Sikandar and Namak Halal back to back!!)

  85. Brenda says:

    Dear Amitji,

Lovely pictures of the Buchanan family smiling and looking so happy! Loved the explanation you’ve given at the bottom of the previous blog, (though no comment was seen) about showing your inked finger, pity government officials didn’t mark the thumb instead, at least that way it would not have been construed as a rude gesture, particularly here in the West but rather a victory sign.

What a pity the comments column could not be seen on your Mac, you’ll be greatly surprised at the enormous response regarding your blog. You will know better in the morning, the feelings of most people here and hope this helps persuade you not to take the drastic step and have it published. My heart will be broken if you do, but I will respect your wishes whatever you choose.

I hope your dear friends make a good and speedy recovery in hospital and are home again very soon. It must have been so comforting to you ,seeing those words written on the hospital wall and being reminded of your dear Father speaking the same gentle and wise words to you when you were young and unwell. Truly uplifting quote.

  96. Dorothy Madigan says:

    Dear Mr. B.,

You’re right … that picture gave me a shock. Westerners … as you say … don’t exactly see it the same as Indians. But it’s a little like any custom that’s different from country to country, like the forbidden shoe sole being seen in Arab countries. I read the reaction of one Arab man who said “I was so uncomfortable [at the sight of a foreigner's shoe sole, as they conversed] that I couldn’t concentrate for a second on what we were talking about.”

But I liked the picture. The family all together, doing their civic duty. Lovely.

I have to go now and concentrate on Jussi Bjorling singing “O Helga Natt,” the most beautiful rendition of “O Holy Night” ever done. I’ll send you the link tomorrow.

    Aloha from Hawaii …

    Love, Dorothy

  98. Naresh Kapoor says:

    Hi

Thanks for asking all of us about your sharing the contents of blog with a media house…

My suggestion is very simple…you need to go back to the moment when you first decided that you should start blogging …what was your objective that time…?…just stick to it now also and do not change….

I may reluctantly agree that this might increase the popularity..but does Big B needs more popularity now?…those who love you and want to get in touch with you will reach you through your blog…irrespective of the language they speak ..the city they live in or social background…

I would rather say that if someone wants to publish the content let them do so from your blog…(in fact many of the newspapers and channels have been doing that)…why you want to bind yourself into something which might take you a bit away from your EF…as it would be a compulsion for you to write….

In my humble opinion you should continue to write the way you are writing and let the media take either extracts or full text of the blog whenever they want to…

    love and thanx for reading

    Naresh Kapoor

    Dear Amitabh Bachchan,

Good quote about human nature. It has an equivalent in the Bible that says that we tend to notice a mote in the eye of another and overlook a timber in our own.
Yes, thus we are… But everyday we are trying to “get better and better”..
    *
Congratulations on completing your civic duty of voting !
It was very thoughtful and kind of you to visit your friends and colleagues in Kokilaben Ambani Hospital.
Sounds like it is a very well functioning facility and I was glad to find out about that..

Delightful to see all your family together looking great and in such good spirits ! Reminded me of the picture of three of you happy on New York street in February, but now all four of you are included…

The gestures you show and the story behind them, I find to be a case of witty serendipity : )
As you wrote in your reply to someone in the previous Day comments, that evil resides in evil minds and therefore this gesture can be considered rude by them…
And how it is suppose to be read by the benevolent minds then ? : )
    What should I say - symbolic…? : )
Anyway, here in the western hemisphere my husband and I laughed well over it !

    *
You always sound so happy and enthusiastic about your favorite sports and players. I can understand your thrill through thinking of something I enjoy as much. Like cinema or gardening or going to the lake, for example. And that is where I went today.
Warm, fresh, sunny. & high blue sky with graceful clouds…

I wish you to have a great day & take care..

God bless you and your family.

    With much love.

You come across as totally down to earth,a person who experiences the same emotions, feelings, sentiments, fears etc like everyone and appear to be relatively untouched by fame.

Liked the pictures of three of you showing the middle finger - definitely considered as showing the rude finger in Western countries. Here in Australia it is frequently shown by drivers overcome with road rage.

By the way its Emily Coue, the French Psychotherapist who quoted - Every Day In Every Way I Am Getting Better and Better. I do recall Dada J.P.Vaswani of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission using this quote often in his talks.

    Love to you.
    Khushy

Magnificent! What for two merry pictures,
And it is great the family together and wonderfully to see so happy faces of the Bachchan-family Thanks for this.
The way in the hospital it has also always painful memories for me, as patient, or a visitor. I hope that all your friends become recovered.

But now I must say good night, I can hardly keep my eyes open.
God bless and protect you Mr. Bachchan and your family.

    good night

  109. Dr. D. Das says:

It was very nice to see you on the TV and newspapers having cast your vote. It would ahve been a message and motivation for others to vote too. But, this was not to be. Shameful turnout in Mumbai. 47% is lower than UP and even Bihar. So apathetic people who have suffered 26/11 and many other terrorist attacks should have stood up and chose their governance. Their apathy was recentle also shown in a clip from a CCTV where a middle aged businessman was shot and looted in a railway station, while others looked on. Greatness of your city resides only in words. It was good that Bollywood turned out in good numbers. It is heartening. Delhi soon goes to poll. It shall be my turn.

    Dear sir,
This is about ur mother. Sir, I am writing this again. I wrote this in your previous blog but didnt get any comment.
Recently when Priyanka Gandhi was asked about her profiency in Hindi, she gave all the credit to Late Teji Bachchanji. Sir, I was watching this whole interview the moment I saw this I was just thinking how great your mother was.
Priyanka Gandhi as said by her used to be with your mother most of the times during childhood times. It was your mother who gave Priyanka books of Shri Hariwansh Rai Bachchan.
I personally see a good leader in Priyanka Gandhi. Infact i have also formed a community on orkut named ‘Priyanka Gandhi+next PM’. At present she is not interested to enter politics. But sooner or later she will join. And the credit will also go to your mother Teji Bachchan.
Sir, i salute your mother under whom two great individuals were groomed- one is you and other one Priyanka. I am sure there are others also and they must be the best in their repective fields.
I am a big fan of yours and a follower of Priyanka Gandhi. Sir I dont want to create any conterversies. But my objective was to just salute Teji Bachchan.

    No is my vote.
I request you not to put it in some newspaper. The deal may worth a fortune for anyone but think about it, when writing has money involved, it can not be free and fair. because with money, there will be certain obligations.
You write fairly critical articles about media they may miss their sharpness and what is the guarantee that blog content won’t be misused and misrepresented?

As far as finger issue is concerned, I am not bothered and I am sure not many others are. I hope all of us show that finger to corruption and misgovernment of our country.

    Regards,

    Amitji,

so you delegated your democratic right,

Well In Kolkata things dont work out that easy, I am still yet to get my revised voter card, and this is is a funny area, though the polling booth officials know me well, and I am in close political connection, still they insist on a voter I card, well well that is quite ironical to someone who has been living in a locality since birth in the same area for 38 years and grown up in the same locality as well, though my initial one year of birth was in my Allahabad House,

I guess we share a common platform Born in Allahabad, and the initials, A B

    SIR

I think your words on media as beast and related were a bit too much, they are doing their job, it is a Kodak Moment when the biggest film star of India, goes to Vote, so it is a nice byte for them, also a boost to the comon man to go out and vote after seeing that you too go and vote

So the jury is still out on wheather you will allow the Blog to come into Print media, i hope you refrain, it will loose its charm, there will be no need for the EF to go to net and open your blog and read, they can easily read it the next day…. may you take the best judgment

Sad to know so many people in hospital, from Prakash Ji to Simple to Adnan’s Dad, this is the saddest part and most tedious part of life, of going through hospital, especially @ old age, when immune system is weak and the diesese have a upper hand but i am sure the Doctors will come out victorious and all these people are back home soon with their families for their sake, i wish them speedy recovery

You take good care of yourselves, Sir

In my earlier comment I referred to the second picture when I should have said the first picture.
Tonight I saw “Puppet Kafka” put on by the Drama of Works. It mixed “The Metamorphosis” with “The trial” with Kafka’s real life story and included references to his other works including the many letters he wrote. Most of the time Kafka was a wooden marionette but in some scenes he would be the letter K which kept changing sizes depending on how he felt about himself.
Let me be the first one that says they understand if you give the publication an audience to find out the details. I’m sure you will use your best judgement and always keep us in mind.
I like the new “old” look of the blog. It is so much cleaner and easier to read through. There is one thing missing from both your signatures though-”my love”

Now off to bed. Happy May Day.

    Love,

  121. RAVI P MALHOTRA says:

Dear Amitji, Good Morning. Everyday in everyway I am getting better and better..!!
Words of wisdom I read with a drop of tear in corner of my eye waiting to roll over. I somehow was very much disturbed since I came back from morning walk. Someone who always smiles when we cross each other during many rounds we take met after a long time. A brief enquiry revealed a lot about life’s strange ways. ” Behind a smile can be an Ocean of tears heldback” I learnt today. Losing a youngman a spouse a father of a girl at very young age to cancer that too without much detection. I always thought there is more to life and sometimes life does change so much that one matures by decades in a short moment.
Your visit to hospital and the various people undergoing treatment shows an important facet of our life. Life swings between happiness achievements and sufferings. There is everything for everyone in life’s story. It shows us all experiences. Everything happens to everyone provided there is enough length to life. We become better and better everyday in understanding the futilities of Life. Somewhere the run stops time halts and for others life pauses.
I do agree with your last sentence that there could be more of such hospitals where good care is taken. We need depth in our learning and that depth will always give good doctors and engineers. Depth of understanding will give good systems and depth of true representation will give strong Nation.
Going to the school where children studied is a nostalgic feeling. School where we studied also gives the same feeling and how each year we became Better and Better. One day we became the best and the school sent us in to the free outside world. A flight of our life took off. We then fly on our own towards our own destiny. We become masters of our destiny.
Have a nice day and do ponder on your father’s advice and me too feel I have become better person today than I was yesterday.
    Regards
    Ravi P Malhotra

    For AB,

“May-Day” indeed for the techies in BigADDA. I wonder how you talk to them when you have to.

    What if?

“Hello, this is Amitabh Bachchan, can I speak to Dilbert?”

“Kaun?” (Female on the other end)

    “Dilbert”

“Kaun Dil? Kiska dil? Kaun ae rey?”

    “Main Amitabh Bachchan hun”

“Achcha, tu Amitabachan hai? Phir main Jaya Bhaadudi, hun. Kaam ki baat kar munna, kya mangta hai?”

“Mera blog kaam nahi kar raha hai”

“Kaam nahi kar raha?… Dekh baat sun… kitne mein bechta hain bol?… Char anna jyada deti hai mein, kya.”

AB cuts the phone. Dials 101 (911 in the US)…

The photo opportunity after voting was well taken. You wouldn’t have been able to show that finger on any other occasion. Thank the election-babu.

Releases the mind sometimes, when you vent your feelings at the right time, in the right place…!

    ———-

Voting is a Right, as you said. It is also a primary responsibility of those who seek to live in a free society.

    ———-

Now, you have put pressure on Dhoni to call you back. Have you seen how he plays under pressure? He makes the fielders earn their wages… Poor John Abraham will have to learn the Ranchi lingo and speak politely at the same time…

  123. Jennifer says:

    Dearest Amitji,

First off, I want to just send you all my support and very best wishes: I know how difficult it is to visit loved ones in the hospital - I’ve done it many times, and I suppose the older I get the more frequent these visits will become - but I sincerely believe that our grounded and full presence with the ones we visit is an immeasurable and indescribable gift, both to them, and to ourselves. Those visits give us an opportunity to express deep and direct affection, and they also can serve as a very potent reminder of our human vulnerability and impermanent mortality. In other words, the present is all we have, so how are we living in each moment? With kindness, presence, and an open heart? Are we telling the people who we love and care about how we feel about them? And if not, why not, and what are we waiting for?

Oh, and those pictures had me laughing out loud, because if in our American culture, we saw someone of your status demonstrating that gesture, it would be awfully scandalous and splashed all over the media! As it was my eyeballs pretty much popped out and I felt a bit funny about it - I can’t stand that “flipping off” gesture - so I was tickled to keep reading and find out the reasons for choosing THAT finger to show to the cameras! And I loved how Jaya was hanging her head in “I can’t believe this” mode, and then totally cracking up in the next shot! Even with that crazy pose, you all look beautiful!

Regarding the “syndication” of your blog: my vote is no. My emotional first reaction to reading what you had to say yesterday was surprisingly one of a bit of possessiveness on my part, as in “he’s ours, we’re his EF!” And then once I got past that, I thought about how free you are now to express yourself on your very own autonomous blog, without any editorial (or corporate) censorship, and what a great medium this is in terms of its freedom. It would be a sad day if you had to have any kind of second thoughts about what you would want to express, in terms of “this and that person on the board of XYZ, who owns the paper who is now featuring the blog, is of this or that opinion about this or that subject, so I’d better not say what I really feel.” You are so eloquent, powerful, and full-hearted with your means of expression, and I don’t want you to feel any kind of limitations regarding what you have to say. I know that you will make the best decision for yourself regarding this issue, but I just wanted to share my feelings with you about it before too much time passed…

FINALLY, I have finished my practicing (before I started writing to you; I can concentrate when I need to!) and I now need to eat dinner, and will watch “Kati Patang” while enjoying my leftover pasta from a couple nights ago, so I bid you a good day (it’s about 9:30 am for you), and am sending you all my love, as I always love to do!

    jennifer

    Morning…

Tha paparazzi asked for the finger and and you were only too glad to obliged!! lol. Well, you can see your gleeful acknowledgement, along with Abhishek and Aishwarya. hahaha!!

But what is the funniest to me, is the Mrs’ reaction, Jayaji at first hides her embarassment and then succomb to see the funny side of it!! hehehehe. Love that!! It would appear she too has a good sense of humour, if a tad on the cautious side, or is this only because the media are in front?? Hey, but someone has to keep the unruly 3 in line!! lol

So sorry to hear of so many you know being in hospital. I hope and pray they all make a speedy recovery.

And as always, so poignant to see you remember your Pa in this situation. But keep healthy yourself…and keep well…because we care…

  136. Sandipan says:

    Sir

I was overwhelmed seeing a happy family of yours yesterday. Every one of you looked so relaxed. You have written that you are upset with how the media pounced upon you for a byte and pictures. I know this is irritating for person like you who are always in a limelight. But spare a thought for us who always want to see you, listen to you. We are not lucky to meet you in person. Never seen you ever in person after passing through Prateeksha and Jalsa so many times. So media is the only way we can see and hear you. I am sounding selfish but we all love you so much. Its such a nice moment in my life to write to you. God bless you and your family.

Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.”

    Namaskaar Amitji,
Thanks for the fun photo! The press will take you to task for that, you know.
Fortunately, you’re not living in the West.
I’m so sorry to hear about all the illnesses among your friends and close associates. It must be difficult for you to watch.
The next time I fall ill, I’ll have to remember that ‘every day in every way, I’m getting better and better”.
This is what I feel about me in the teaching profession, though. I’ve lived it, I’ve seen it, and I’ve seen myself get better as a teacher. As I’m sure you’ve seen this with your acting career. As with many others who show dedication and commitment to their professions and vocations. we get better and better. But it’s an absolutely wonderful message for those who are ill, depressed or despairing in any way.
On another note, my chitthhi is on its way to you, via snail mail. Maine ‘Prateeksha’ ko bhej diya. Lifaafa kaala hai.
Kripaya khud kholiye, Amitji. Maine chitthhi sirf aap ke liye bhej diya…aur koi nahi. Kripaya jawaab bhejiye, snail mail kay kaaaran.
I look forward to hearing from you, Amitji,
    Much love to you…

Thanks for nice pics from the post polling scenario.. It indeed is a good sign to dispaly that Amitabh Bachchan understands the significance of his voting powers.. yet the low turn out at the Mumbai.. Is it only due to intense heat.. Is it also not due to more apathy in our minds.. Is it also not for some of us having the wrong belief that one vote does not make a difference.. whatever be the reason.. if Mumbai and Delhi do not set good examples do we expect Pilibhit or Ranchi to show us the way..

Hope to catch with you in the evening in between the two IPL games.. As noted earlier KKR will have to really perform beyond their capacities to beat the Mumbai Indians.. the other contest could be more even..

Mr. Dhoni should apploise to you for not responding to you and apploize to people of india for not giving value to one of most respected award in india. Dont know why indian people still not making it issue n compail Dhoni to respond this matter, i personally think he should have at least release one statement with his accepectance of mistake.

If you would understood what i meant mr ankit you would not have thought of our national security to be a joke. If we one by one start understanding the situation it would make a difference.
Do you think holding the IPL outside india was a bad decision. Imagine if something happened to some foreign origin players would it not be national shame

    good Mrng Sir,

Thought for you (request you please rply..)

A Father was reading a magazine and his little daughter every now and then distracted him. To keep her busy, he tore one page on which was printed the map of the world. He tore it into pieces and asked her to go to her room and put them together to make the map again.
He was sure she would take the whole day to get it done. But the little one came back within minutes with perfect map… When he asked how she could do it so quickly, she said, “Oh… Dad, there is a man’s face on the other side of the paper… I made the face perfect to get the map right.” she ran outside to play leaving the father surprised.
There is always the other side to whatever you experience in this world. . That is, whenever we come across a challenge or a puzzling situation, look at the other side… v will be surprised to see an easy way to tackle the problem..

I have not forgiven those selfish, egoistic, and uneducated jounalists who have wronged you and your family for so long. They have even questioned our integrity and our honesty. What for? I have no idea but all I know you have tried very hard to correct the wrongs and as you said some Editors did not even print all your side of the story despite you being personally requesting them to do so.
    Forget them!!!

    My beloved Mr. Bachchan,

This was indeed a very touching post as you spoke of all the people you know lying in hospital, one beyond recognition. This must’ve been very painful indeed for you knowing and recalling the better times you have shared with them. Nevertheless I am sure that your visit was a very welcome one to all of them. Is this the new hospital in Lokhandwala? I remember driving past a new structure during my visit in January and the name sounded familiar. How attentive you are to all the interiors and what you read and see….I always tend to smile when you write about this lovely eye-for-detail….I love doing the same….Walk through life with your eyes and ears open. It has so much to offer us and so much to learn from. I had tears swell up when I read you recalling your father’s wise words. He was and is a great man indeed and through all the wisdom he has left you he continues to live, so rest assured his spirit lives on. Another line that always helps me personally when times are low & strength is hard to find is…….EVEN THIS SHALL PASS.

Now to the happier side of your post. I had a hearty laugh seeing your freshly voted pictures. And of course those shots are to die for. How lovely, how hilarious!!!! Loved it. And Mrs. Bachchan hiding her face in shame for her brood was soooo cute. You naughty ones. I am sure the media had a blast with what they later reported, but let’s look at the lighter side of it ok? I love the seriousness on Abhishek’s face whilst sticking that finger out. Sure looks like an innocent lad who is forced to do so, but knowing how mischievous and full of pranks he is, I am not buying that innocence. :) :) :) :) In Germany, you can get fined for sticking that middle finger out. And to think the Government has officially asked for this to be done???………..HOW TRULY FUNNY!!!

I do hope Bigadda gets the system working in it’s full functionality again. Just to bring to your attention. Your response to one Dr. Roy is showing on Day 372 although it is with regard to this post. Just thought I’d let you know.

Loads of love to you-Lily D’Penha-Frankfurt-Germany.

  177. Sudhir says:

    For AB,

Regarding the quotation up there about the “Logic of the mind…”

These are the type of bromides that corrupt a culture and a man’s character.

A compromise is a unilateral suspension of moral judgement to a vague desire or a whim. The doctrine is called Ethical Subjectivism. An irrational, whimsical society is a mob of moral cowards…

If you abstain equally from judging virtues and vices, good and evil, right and wrong, it is not equal treatment; it’s a personal act of evasion. a moral betrayal. And it’s never one-off, there is no such thing as a temporary compromise on values.

If one acquires a great following by writing trash, he cannot expect to be invited to write the constitution of the country; provided ofcourse that that country is founded by rational men.

    Hello sirji,

Hope everything is fine with ya and it was a good way to show that you casted vote and people make assumption that you wud have done this on purpose. haha that was a good way though normally in Indian Television when the middle finger is shown they wud have blurred that particular area and now what they wud so all the big personalities are showing it haha. The other thing is these idiots shud have brain to atleast choose another finger.

Because here in blore they had put the ink on the first or the grooming finger. I dont know why is it middle finger there.

    Amitji,
I am following your blog for last many days. I have grown up seeing your films. I always believed , since my childhood, that you are a person with a direct connect with the people of this country. The roles which you potrayed in your films, though were created by a team of talented professionals, but you always looked real in them. And now this blog. Your writings are so touching, they come straight to the heart. I pray from the God almighty that you keep on communicating with people who at least get something which is honest and inspiring.
The quote, which your late father asked you to repeat during illness was coined by Émile Coué de Châtaigneraie (February 26, 1857 – July 2, 1926) who was a French psychologist and pharmacist who introduced a method of psychotherapy and self-improvement based on optimistic autosuggestion (or self-hypnosis).

The application of his mantra-like conscious autosuggestion, “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better” (French: Tous les jours à tous points de vue je vais de mieux en mieux) is called Couéism or the Coué method.

(Repost from Day 372 with the extention: about blog in press)
    Dear Sir!

… In the Second World War a guy came to Jean-Paul Sartre and asked him a question, on the answer on what his destiny was depending. The guy hoped that the answer will be clear and definite, and he was frustrated as he heard from his idol: You are free! You get to choose!
Sir, today I play the role of Sartre and tell you: You are free! You get to choose!
Earlier or later everyone forces a borderline - the choice. This is the damned Hamlet’s question: To be or not to be?
I am sure, you have already made a choice…
Let me tell you about how I see the situation.

If you’d say NO to this project, I would be happy. It is so calm, comfortable and warm here, with you and the EF…..I don’t want the expansion of our EF and the diffusion of your precious attention and energy. But at the same time I understand, that it means my EGO is speaking.

If you would say YES to this project, I would accept it with humility and respect you much more. Why? Because it will be a burden for you. EF will be huge, and you will get more responsibilities, you will take more responsibility for you words…. There will be more misunderstandings, buzzes, provocations in the media….Are you to ready to get it, Sir?

Please, don’t think about commercialization! There are always greedy people and pragmatic dealers near to great actions. But more important is, WHO is at the back of THEM. In this case there are just Indians, who don’t have the internet access and don’t speak English. I totally agree with the suggestion of dear Satyam to translate your posts into Hindi. Your thoughts will be clear for this people! It will be so great for them! Your high education level, your deep thoughts about the sense of the life, your humor, your memories about the golden era of Bollywood - all this things belong to property of India. And they can not belong only to extended family! Maybe, it is your mission….
I have tell for many times, that you overgrow yourself as an actor, you are more than an actor.
With the time you become the India’s personification, India’s soul and mentality. I can say, the archetype, the collective unconscious is shining through your great person…

I repeat, don’t worry about the commercialization of your dear blog in press. Let me tell you a funny story. 10-12 years ago I was in China with my dear husband. Once I was invited to the Chinese TV. There I told about my interest to the ancient Chinese poetry and Confusianism, played guitar and sang popular Chinese songs. The Chinese were enthused! But later…. The pieces of the program with me telling about Confucianism and quoting the aphorisms of Confucius were cut and included to the advertisement of Chinese rice vodka “Confucius’ family”. And they didn’t pay me for the advertising! My Chinese friends were very angry to me, because I refused to submit a judicial claim. But I didn’t think about! It was just nonsense for me! (If you would know, Sir, how not important money for me in my life. In this sense I am a “last romanticist”… or better a communist… hehe)! Another thing was more important. There were people, who began to recognize me on the Chinese streets and thanked me to the interest to their culture. And the joke with the Rise Vodka was just a cause to laugh for me, not more…

I like very much Jaya-ji on the photos. I think, my reaction would be same… I love Jaya-ji as actress – as mother – as lady in politics – as wife of the great person of India…

“My Father lives with me…” Yes, dear Sir, I see it. Your dear Father always with you. You are just a son of your great Father. Sometimes I do feel so distinctly your deep melancholy and solitude without your Father in our world… especially at night…. when you revive in memory his face, words, voice, gestures, laughter… And then you open your eyes… And nearby nobody… Oh my angel, each of us learns sooner or later this pain…
With all my love to you – especially in these moments of Father-sick like today…

  195. Daisy M says:

    Dear Mr Bachchan

Well, the overwhelming majority of EF certainly voted against turning your precious Blog into a newspaper column yesterday.

Nina Arora, whose views I respect greatly (and who treated us to the most delighful posting about Abhi yesterday) told us gently not to be so silly, and to “wake up and smell the coffee”.

Well, Mr Bachchan, I must ask you to have your sensory organs on full “rat alert” when you give an audience to the “gentlemen of the press” and find out what they are proposing.

The eternal dilemma - whether it is ever safe to put your trust in journalists, authors, or TV producers.

If your Blog is turned into newspaper “copy”, you will be under pressure to make it shorter, snappier and sexier.

If by any miracle the newspaper guarantee to give you editorial freedom, and to print your words in their entirety, you wil still find you are self-censoring your words because you know they are for publication.

And I love you to write to EF exactly the way you do now. From the reactions on the Blog, most feel passionately the same.

Finally, even if by some greater miracle your writing remained totally unchanged, ask yourself - NO ASK THE NEWSPAPER - how they would PROMOTE your column.

Your writing would be such a HUGE asset in selling more copies that I suspect they would stop at nothing to publicise it…. using all the techniques you have raged against so often in this very Blog.

Lines taken out of context and blown up to make a huge “tease” story on the front page each day, to tempt people to buy the paper and read more. I can see it now… taken from yesterday’s Blog at random…

Amitabh: “Every day and in every way I am getting better and better”. Find out why on page 3.

Amitabh - my hospital agony with Prakash Mehra - emotional revelations from the star on page 3.

Amitabh - why I “gave the finger” to the “ravenous beast” of the press. Read more on page 3.

I woudl suggest you to please go ahead with the idea, as i find most of the people who love you most, find it difficult to connect to internet & write on your blog. So for me it would a excellent idea to expand your reach to the people who love you most. We shoudl not care for how media would react to it. They have always tried their level best to misquote you, to distort your remarks but more they write against you more people start liking you, your gesture.

Dear Sir, I pray for the speedy recovery of Prakash Mehra. It was his film “Sharaabi” where you looked most handsome and stylish. In those days, both of you might be having good chemistry, better than Manmohan Desai, I suppose.

I have met Prakash ji years back when he was shooting for his serial “Asoka- the great” in filmcity. Serial could not be made after pilot episodes. I was also lucky to have exchanged a few words with him. I remember, he was in his trademark dress, white pant-shirt with white shoes.

    Long live dear Prakash ji.

To AB especially- I think it is not mandatory to put indelible ink on middle finger only. Sometimes they put on index finger also..as in my case. Regards

    For AB,

Emotions are indicators. When you see posters, slogans, quotes, proverbs in a hospital they trigger an emotion. One that puts a value in recall mode - the value of life.

And what is the source of this value? An individual’s self-esteem, purpose, reasoning?

Or is it a divine value equally distributed to all and sundry by virtue of an accident called birth?

Justice, I believe depends on why we feel what we do, when we do…

As you’ve mentioned before, India is one of very few countries where recession has not had its effect. Yes, in the last 10 years India has escalated exponentially on Economic and Domestic front. Talent of every individual in India is the result of this vast, varied and sustained growth. It can only get better. My dearest amithji,
    How are you?
so voting got over, & you got a chance to show your middle fingr to th media![no pun intended]

There seems to be a lot of change on the blog page. The rating has disappeared, the blue strip has disappeared , sadly the pink strip too has gone!& all the postings are shown on single page!
But now, I can see a yellow strip where ever you have replied. As long as you respond it do’snt matter which colour it is.

God, sooo many people are in hospital! I think now all the hi-fi people are shifting to Ambani hospital from Breach candy. Looks like Breach candy has either got competition or a breather, whichever way they want to take it, is’nt it?

bye for now. The match [IPL] has started. Poor srk, his team is getting a nice beating, feel a little sad for him.

my undying love to you always,

  207. Ameen Mohammed says:

    Dear Mr. Amitabh Bachachan,

This elections many citizens turned out to vote because of the public awareness campaigns featuring the leading members of the Indian Film Industry; who I think has done a commendable job in compelling people to go and caste their vote. I read your blog after seeing the photo in “ The Hindu” titled ‘The Family that Votes together’.

Frankly, showing ‘off’ your finger was in poor taste. This was not expected from a person of your stature. If one of the most respectable citizen of the country and iconic figure could do this today don’t you think it could become a style statement, which would be followed by the youth tomorrow. Sir, showing of the middle finger has the same connotation here in India as in the West.

Many would rightly agree that our politicians, the system and all those who dint turn up to vote deserves to be shown just that. John Abraham and other stars including Abishek may have made similar gestures, but it is when an Iconic personality like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, who millions of Indians over the past three decades has held in the highest esteem, resorts to such improper gestures in public, that makes many of your admirers like me feel insulted and let down. Unlike the younger generation, you should have had the statesmanship to reframe from making such gestures. You are a National Icon and India’s Brand Ambassador to the World.

The point I want to raise is this aspect in your blog.

“It is another matter that, the Government marks our middle finger with an indelible ink, to avoid duplication and therefore unfair electoral procedures.”

How did you manage to get the indelible ink marked on your middle finger, when rest of India, including leaders Mr. L.K.Advani gets it marked on the left forefinger as clearly specified in the “Handbook For Presiding Officers” Chapter XIX, by the Election Commission of India. The marking on the Middle Finger is only in case of a Fresh/Repoll. The polling officer should not have applied the same indelible ink on your middle finger. I just hope that it was not because you requested him to be mark it on your middle finger and the officer did it on his own will. The Election Commission should look into this and sort it out once and for all.

If you really wanted to show “the ravenous beasts” your middle finger you should show them an appropriate time and not outside the polling booth, in full public glare, making a mockery of the elections and all those who turned out to vote.

May God Almighty always bless you.

    Ameen Mohammed.

Great to see so many from the faternity vote and set an example. With the mercury rising so fast across India the percentage of voters have dropped dramatically. The pic is awesome. Showing finger to the media. AWESOME.

    I think Jaadugar wasn’t a bad movie.

I watched it several times and I think it was a good movie except from that stupid song “padosan apni murgi korakhna sambhaal…..”

I think the reason critics and people think it was a flop movie coz it released at same time as Toofan, both had similar theme of a magician. And for as far as I realise Prakash Mehra made movies with you in mind with co star would be Shashi Kapoor or Vinod Khanna. At that time Shashi Kapoor wouldn’t fit the roll of Aditya Pacholi’s because of his age and weight and I think Vinod Khanna was away out of movies for a long time.

And to be honest Aditya Pancholi was the weakest link and maybe that’s one of the reasons the chemistry between you two didn’t click like it worked magic with Vinod Khanna or Shashi Kapoor.

Anyways…. the pic ek dum jhakaaas. Seriously when you four come together and walk the rest would fade infront of you all.

I bet, most celebrities will try to avoid clashing with you four unless he or she is down to earth and a very close friend of yours or your family.

    Enjoy the weekend

Thus things even out ultimately. There is that ultimate balance.

  215. Jasmine , London says:

Entirely in agreement with you Daisy in 195, well articulated.

Mr Bachchan the parameters of “Magazine or In-House-style-English” will not allow for freedom of expression, certainly not for freedom of emotion or sentiment, which incidentally is a huge attraction to the blog the way it is. Your words come from “your” heart and cannot be condensed or reproduced to fit into 1000 words for a column and certainly cannot be aesthetically enhanced for a price.
For a newspaper you would surely be expected to modify you academic terminology, use more colloquialisms; therefore your beautiful, poetic, emotionally embellished “text-book-perfect” writing will inevitably be reduced to:

    “witty and slangish”

I quote your own words from your reply when you were challenged by a comment stating your blogs were too academic and difficult to understand. The reply I believe alludes to the point that you prefer to write well and with accuracy:

    DAY 365 (i) #119

    o ab says:

“ If you are finding that my odd post is difficult to understand, I believe you should make an effort to understand it. If you do not think it worth its while, you should not read it. Let it pass for others who do enjoy it. For you I shall endeavor to write simpler ! Thank you. ‘Witty and slangish” is what you want. Wit I shall try, but slang in my ethics is not considered appropriate writing !!”

Yes, OK I’ve been trawling trough the blog looking for this for ages.. but only to gently remind you Sir, never “ever” simply to prove a point! (you must believe that I’m not trying to be smart-al here) we’re all “concerned” that you are being asked to cast your own ethics aside and to sell your soul to the devil! (Lily I believe you said that yesterday too and how accurate!)

Ultimately Mr. Bachchan please know that our primary concern here is for YOU. In hindsight, I know WE will still get our blogs to read somehow, if they are enhanced ….well we will be further entertained by it ….so it still works for us; but ‘you’ve’ waited 40 YEARS to have your platform of self expression – pure, unadulterated, straight-from-the-heart Bachchanism’s for all to read – no scripts, no characters… The media is aware how powerful this is as a tool for you… and want to take it away from you!

You may also, predictably lose the very platform by which you have chosen to retaliate. How can you begin to correct the defamatory material written by every “Tom, Dick and ‘Jug’” if indeed you are roughly on the same side of the battle field.

I sincerely apologize dear Mr Bachchan if I am out of line in what I say and the way I chose to say it …but I’m worried – period! Kasamh se Sir …I have a bad gut feeling about this!
Not wanting ever to undermine you but I beseech you consider this. You know what they say.. occasionally “out of the mouths of babes come the darndest things”… you never know … our anxiety may not be entirely unnecessary… I really do pray you will make the right decision.

Love as ever and apologies if I have offended you ….

  221. Swati Agrawal Gupta says:

Dear Amitabh Ji,( i hope you read this)

Its my first view of your blog and I am amazed by the person that you are.
An inspiration to the youth of today.
I remember being a kid, stopping by your house very Sunday to get a glimpse of you while on our way to ISKCON temple but never being able to see you in all those years. And then finally seeing you at JW Marriot for DCH succes party when i was having dinner with my parents and saw you walking down in a blue jacket. You won’t believe but my Mom ran to greet you but you had entered the party by then. Those r my memories of seeing you just once.
Today when i read your blog on your visit to the hospital and ICU , it brought tears to my eyes as it brought back memories of losing my father( An honourable nuclear scientist) last year to cancer within 2 days of its detection. But as u said i too believe he lives in me, with me forever.

i see glimpses of him on you and have promised myself to interact with you everyday through your blog, will plan to have a blog of my own too.Though i may not be a known personality but i wish i would find one fan in you.
Will share the link with you soon.

Thankyou for being there.Wish good health and happiness to you and your family always.

    Love Swati

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,

Good that u got a day’s break. Happy for u. As regards giving the print media the rights to your blog, I feel that considering your long & extensive experience with them, you are the best person to decide. I would only suggest that you are the only Indian celebrity blogger who is the most prolific and articulate. Please don’t give that up for anthing else.

Bye 4 now, and take care.

  223. Vinay Aggarwal says:

    Dear Amitabhji,
    Sir,

When i was a small child, i always told my father that there are only two persons that i wish to meet and they are just something great to me. One is you and the other is Sunil Gavaskarji. i had even attended your shooting of the movie, I think ‘SHAKTI’, when u have to kick the tin can to and fro, i think it was a sunset time. i don’t how old i was at that time. i was in Mumbai with my family for vacations and waiting in a queue to see your shooting and thrilled when u came and wore a black leather jacket….i don’t rememer it exactly. UR no. 1 for me yesterday when i was a kid, today when i am a grown up man and will always forever. YOU ARE REALLY A GREAT HUMAN BEING, I EVER CAME ACROSS. I respect you from my heart.

i have read many a times about your blog but never able or u can say tried find about it, but today suddenly, i got the page, read the latest write up and here i am writing my feelings for u. i am not a professional writer but tried to write a good language, sorry, if u would come across any mistakes.

I lost my father 13 years back. I had last seen him in ICU. I was the first person to whom the doctor told about my father’s death. i was shocked. He was everything to me. I was 19 then. It is the area in (any) hospital, which i am not able to visit till now.

Ya, the hospital should be there, but in the reach of general public. Govt. is ready to spent crore of rupees in games, but not in hospitals. The medical facilities should be uptodate and subsidised. When my father was admitted in BATRA HOSPITAL (in early morning), one of the famous hospital in delhi, the CT SCAN machine was not working, & not repaired until evening till they decided to get it done in another hospital. Such carelessness should not be happened. And he expired next morning. He had a severe brain hammorage. I miss him a lot.

I REQUEST U TO DEFINITELY READ THIS WRITEUP. AND I ALWAYS RESPECT U.

    Take Care Sir,

    With Love,
    Vinay Aggarwal

HAHA!! Excellent !! Love the pic..

Hope you got my vote yesterday, internet was down. In case you didn’t, I voted AGAINST the idea. I’d love for those fans who can’t read English or don’t have access to the blog, to read your thoughts. But I don’t think granting exclusivity to any one paper is the way to go about it. Certainly not if they stand to profit from the right. In any case, the media already quote from your blog on a regular basis. So what’s new about this..?

    !!!!!!!!!

    i thought as much !! ;-)

    For Dr. Lena,

Nice quotes of Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky.

I have seen Tolstoy’s ‘War & Peace’ in the book store but never mustered the courage to buy it. Of Dostoevsky I have read ‘The Poor and The Humiliated’. Of Maxim Gorky I have read ‘Mother’ and some other essays.

On Communism I have the essays of Lenin, the biographies of Stalin, Mao Tse Tung and more recently Fidel Castro; and ofcourse the mother of them all Das Capitale, The Communist Manifesto by KM & FE…

    “A spectre is haunting Europe…’ (since 1867…!)

Who are the current favorites in the world of communism? Putin doesn’t seem to be a writer; he looks like someone who shoots first and then talks.

Good afternoon my precious.. gracious.. gorgeous.. Sun

How was your day my dearest dear..? i hope that you had enjoyed it.. , i’m enjoying work on Friday 1st. of May.. tours have nothing to do with holidays.. in fact, the date of the tour is determined according to the tourists holidays.. , so it was a hot.. tiring.. hectic day as usual…!

The finger issue.. , i don’t know why people still insist that you meant something else rather than showing the press the inked finger, they asked you and your dear family to show it..? i wonder .. what if you didn’t explain..? what else they would say concerning it..? that is a very childish attitude, to insist on mis-understanding clear things, and explain them in the way that like..!

Elections.. new governoment.. i hope that every one practice his constitutional right to vote to whom they deserve the honor to serve the puplic.. not to stand away and say that nothing would change, or my vote would have no effect.. unneeded negativity .. !

I loved the photos.. you all look great.. and you are stunning as always.. and Mrs. Jaya’s smile is so beautiful.. god bless you all.

I wish all your friends who had been hospitalised a speed recovery.

( EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY I AM GETTING BETTER AND BETTER… !! )

A very wise word from a very wise man.. a great father .. yours were my dearset.. he lives with you.. and he must be so proud of you.. as you are getting better and better every day .. no limits for your wonderous… and no limits for my love and respect to you..

Do whatever you like to do.. as long as it comforts you.. it does comfort me.. and i absolutely agree with what descision you would take concerning your precious blog..

Till your next ost and forever.. love, care, affection and respect.

  242. Arpana, Mumbai, India says:

Only 44% voting in Mumbai. I guess it makes my vote a lot more priceless but on the otherside, it looks like this city is not ever going to wake up. A weekend away was more important than voting…and all the citizens that are complaining about their name not being there, what did they do about it. With the Electoral office going online, one could have easily checked in advance if the name was there. Also a visit to the not so friendly electoral office could have been made. We have still not reached the stage where thinking alone will make the change happen. Unfortunately we still have to get up and get going…
..I did find the ink on the middle finger amusing…and since most of us know what it popularly signifies today I was wondering what are we showing our finger too!!!

  243. leena says:

I just copy pasted from Wikipedia. Thanks for bringing this to my notice, I will teach my children and friends about this.

“Émile Coué de Châtaigneraie (February 26, 1857 – July 2, 1926) was a French psychologist and pharmacist who introduced a method of psychotherapy and self-improvement based on optimistic autosuggestion (or self-hypnosis).

The application of his mantra-like conscious autosuggestion, “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better” (French: Tous les jours à tous points de vue je vais de mieux en mieux) is called Couéism or the Coué method.[1] The Coué method centers on a routine repetition of this particular expression according to a specified ritual, in a given physical state, and in the absence of any sort of allied mental imagery, at the beginning and at the end of each day.[citation needed

  244. Kashmira Grewal says:

    My dearest Mr. Bachchan,

It was a great relief to hear you say that you have decided to keep your blog the way it is meant to be…a personal diary of sorts, with the distinct difference of your fans responding to your thoughts and your questions which you raise in loud thinking in this very personal space of your own! And ofcourse, for reasons too, that you have extended the exercise to an interaction among all of us! Once again you have proved, by action and not words, how much your EF really means to you! We are indeed very very grateful to you, and very blessed, if I may add, to be associated with you! And congratulations to you and your der family for having exercised your constitutional rights!! We voted too, here in Pune, on the 27th of March - it is always a very gratifying experience - like you too have a say in the affairs of your country?!! Something like that……!!

I was extremely perturbed to learn of so many dear people whom I know from a distance, being so unwell and recuperating in the ICU! Mrs. Hiroo Johar, such a dear gracious lady, and Mr. Prakash Mehra! Oh my dear me!! I could not go thru your description of his condition without becoming emotional! His name and yours were synonymous to a movie-goer once upon a time!! May the Lord heal him quickly, and may he live the rest of his days in good health and good cheer! Our prayers for him and for all the other dear people who are at the moment so indisposed and undergoing treatment in the hospital! I was surprised to hear of Simple Kapadia…whatever could have gone with her….she’s quite young……but I guess good health has nothing to do with age, as it appears….the sure way to living a healthy life is to change the context of our lives rather than its contents! Our perceptions of our life situations need to be reviewed time and again!

I was quite taken aback by your remark over Mahi not acknowledging your good wishes to him! My immediate reaction was - is he capable of doing such a thing ever….he is so down to earth and humble too…..but then today, one just doesn’t know….I like him so much and am a great fan of his! I hope he replies to you quickly, and am sure he will apologise profusely too! hope you have forgiven him for this….?

You take good care of yourself and keep well! In closing, I’d like to comment upon the quote at the beginning of your post today…..nothing could have described us human beings better than this! Thank you for bringing it to us!

    Love always,
    Kashmira

    Dear AB,
That ‘ravenous beast’ showing its ugly power by twisting your innocent and lovingly complain for M.S. Dhoni. Yes, ‘Aajtak’ picked up your comments from this blog and gave a n ugly twist and made Dnoni a villan.

Let me repeat myself, that almost everyone in your freternity (including cricketers as they do appear in ad) are victim of this ‘ravenous beast’ and still freternity is not united on this front. Matter of fact it’s divided and some members seem to be enjoying others misery. Don’t they know they are next!!! Pl let’s have your observation on this very important issue.

  246. G.A.Patel says:

Dear Sir, The pictures are great. Showing your middle finger to the press saying !!!!!!!!! hahahaha good one. If you look at the pics before the reading, it looks like you are showing them to the press, obviously not to us!!!!!
We are having a lazy day at the Koningshof campsite. Yesterday we went to a seaside resort in the motor home and camped there. As it was Queen Beatrix’s birthday, it was a bank holiday and guess what, NO CHARGE TO PARK YOUR VAN.
We must have occupied 5 parking space and we didn’t have to put any money in the parking meter. The street was full of people smiling and happy and very friendly and lot of them on bicycles in their own lanes. I wish we had bicycle lanes in England. A lot more people would be out, the land would be fume free, and lot less noisy and less congested. i have really liked Holland and the people. Their gardens are small but very well looked after. Beautiful loans and full of different kinds of flowers, plants and shrubs.
Anyway hope your party wins. I am sure you are wise enough to vote the party which will benefit India. It shows and feels the way you think and write and your work of charity. We are now going to fry samosas and kachoris in the electric deep fryer, to take with us for lunch tomorrow to Amsterdam, on a coach trip. Pranams to you and all the EF.

    Dear Mr. AB,

My apologies for this comment, I just could not let this go, perhaps you can understand.

    Sudhir #149,

You are an intelligent and quick-witted guy and I have enjoyed your banter with some of the “females” here. I have dared to challenge your flippant remarks about the flu in my comment #542 on day 372, because I feel strongly about the way this potential crisis should be presented to the public.

I said “Please no wisecracks”, so why the “without so much as a ‘please”?

And if I were a male, would you have brought Kipling down on me?

BTW this is not my first language either…

    For AB and Renate,

Thanks for the reposte Renate. No I don’t only banter with ‘females’, I tried to rope in Abhaya Sharma some time back, but I found he was in another time zone and orbit - not my frequency. I am a hockey fan, not cricket.

Take back my words about without the ‘please’…

About the BTW, why blame poor Kipling? If you were a male, the name of the pandemic wouldn’t mean anything to you. Have you heard any man saying that the name was not appropriate?

Okay. Peace. Peace. AB is reading this.

Dear Amitji….or should I just say Amit.

The reason being that after so many years and at an age where most people see their lives behind them, u see it ahead of you. U are so very young at heart and growing younger with each passing day.

So here it is…..Hi amit…..what’s up? what’s cooking in the woods of bolly?

Jokes apart…..its heartening to know that there are hospitals….the likes of Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. But I truly dream of a day when Government Hospitals achieve this standard pushing private ones to innovate and create a fresh new quality benchmark. This way those not able to afford medical treatment can still avail world class treatment, saving a lot of lives and creating a lot of goodwill towards the nation (and its politicians).
Sir, u r in a position wherein you can influence minds, effect change and create history. Don’t loose this opportunity. Make things happen for yr people.

Here in my region Ural is amazing weather, plus 3-5 degree and blue sky… Now I go to my balcony and beg the our Russian cool north-eastern wind (my dear Nord-Ost!): fly please to the India to my dear friends in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi…

It is for unique guy Sudhir:

Haven’t you read “War & Peace” of Leo Tolstoy yet? Oh guy! It is my favorite novel! Actually I reread this great book every year. It is really so. By the way have you seen a Soviet-produced film “War and Peace”? (Sergei Bondarchuk was directed). Super super super film!! An Epic Among Epics! It is one of the most expensive films in the World Sinema Industry. And without using special effects!! (It is not Lord of the ring, Troya, Matrix or so). About Battle of Borodino’s scene.: it was the biggest scene in the World Cinema with the using real people, real horses, real explosions, etc. About communists. Today – nobody! Only me and maybe Fidel Castro…Haha! About mr. P. – either good or nothing. So.. in my situation better nothing. It s all.

    For AB,

This is my serious take on the latest pandemic. This is a history sheeter. Hark back on the mad cow, then the bird flu and now the porcine version.

If the Vice President (Marketing) of pharma companies had the same integrity as the VP(R&D) we can avoid this exercise in panic.

Few days on some MNC will launch a panaecia.

This is not politics. It is ethics.

    Hello Sir,

I have been a regular follower of your blog..my only grouse is you don’t write too much about your experiences on working with ex-directors like Manmohan desai / Prakash mehra.

I am sure there must be great stories / factoids about actual working conditions on location locations, story telling, song picturizations etc..case in the point..your phenomenal body of work with prakash mehraji…do share these stories with us. Today as you say he lies in the ICU, the apt tribute would be a standalone blog on him by you..Likewise you could narrate the same on working with other Directors…Us dedicated fans do deserve this

Do continue with the wonderful postings of yours !!

WHAT YOU PUBLISH IN YOUR BLOG, ON THE WEB, HAS AN INTERNATIONAL VIEWER TRAFFIC SOME TIMES JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY

YOUR BLOGGERS, DON’T KNOW. DON’T EXPRESS; OR VERY DIPLOMATICALLY POINT OUT THE MISHAPS ON THIS BLOG. PEOPLE WHO RESPOND ARE ABOUT 600 OR SO. BUT PEOPLE WHO READ YOU MAY BE MUCH LARGER IN NUMBER

MAY BE YOU SHOULD GET AN EDITOR WHO CAN SAY ”CUT’ , NOT ONLY TO THE POSTS OF BLOGGERS, MOST IMPORTANTLY YOUR WRITINGS ETC,

YOU MUST BE SENSITIVE TO THE PERCEPTIONS OF INTERNATIONAL VIEWERS

LAST OF ALL, IF ” LOREAL ” VISITS YOUR BLOG, WITH ARB SHOWING THE FINGER, PEOPLE IN USA WILL BE LAUGHING AT HER, HER NEXT CONTRACT MAY BE IN JEOPARDY. THAT SHOULD MAKE SOME DIFFERENCE TO GOLD DIGGING. PEOPLE IN THE WEST ARE NITPICKY. ALSO COMPETITIVE

    Dear Mr. Bacchan,
good to read ur blog..always inspiring to me..and sure for lots of people too.

I was curious to read the comments responding about Mr. Dhoni and found very few of reader has commented about Dhoni not responding to you.

few remarks. I was suprised to see how emotional you are when people ignore you. though Dhoni have no where in compare of your bigger than life image.

Mr. Dhoni should apploise to you for not responding to you and apploize to people of india for not giving value to one of most respected award in india. Dont know why indian people still not making it issue n compail Dhoni to respond this matter, i personally think he should have at least release one statement with his accepectance of mistake.

Also would request you not to get attached with such things. as this will drag u unnessary discussion. Media might take advantage n 1 hour News Serial ..DHONI NE RESPONSE KHAU NAHI KIYA>. and start comparing ur status n dhoni status..massala for them..and time waist for us to watch such news..

u r like got figure for us so always wish to see u out for this kind of discussion. KEEP SOMETHING PERSONAL TO U TOO!!!!

AT LAST LIKE ALL SAID..PICTURE IS REALLY FUNNY.. AND WILL RESULT AFTER COUNTING WHO YOU N YOUR FAIMLY SHOWING THIS FINGURE. HAHAHA

Yes , you have had a long stint in hospitals , but your share is over and you will be well and fine each passing day.
Reminded me of the year when you were in Breach candy ( post Coolie shooting ).
At exactly the same time, my mother’s brother was down with terminal stage of cancer in Breach Candy. My mother would often meet your wife in the lobby or the elevator and simply excahnge good wishes with her. My uncle passed away on that Vinayak Chaturthi. And after 15 days , her second brother also passed away . Such is life…….
But life moves on ….. the vacuum is there, but we still have to breathe.
Been a tiring hectic day in the heat.
Hope you were able to read the balance comments. I had for the first time written a long but crisp note?????? as usual towards the end of the day.

And as opposed to “mad cow disease”, which is almost entirely preventable and “bird flu” which has (thankfully) not yet realized its full potential, this one is here to stay and you will have an encounter with it. Luckily it seems to play out a lot milder than first anticipated.

And if the marketing VP does his job, you might even receive a vaccine before it gets to you and your family.

  285. parvesh chawla says:

    Hi,

Just now I have seen some TV channel where they are showing the news that Dhoni did not respond to Big B’s SMS. If Dhoni did not respond to Mr. Big B’s SMS, it does not mean that it should be shown in the national Tv channels, because this is not a matter of the national news. Big B is Big in his field and there is no doubt about it, but Dhoni is also something in his field. Although it is not good to ignore somebody’s wishes, but it depends on the nature of the person who has received the message and he might be not very attached to the person who had sent him the message whosoever the sender is. If I send my good wishes to Big B through his mobile or through this blog whether he respond or not it is upto him only and I should not complain about it because if I am so important for Big B only then he should respond to me and if I am not so important then he will not respond to me and just ignore me. Be practical, because in this world most of the people respond to the persons with whom they have some interest in any manner. And above all Jhukta Vahi Hai Jisme Jaan Hoti Hai, Akadna To Murde Ki Pehchan Hoti Hai. These are fair comments true from my heart, if it hurts Big B then it is upto him but I am of the view that Don’t allow little things to disturb your peace of mind. More importantly, I wish to extend my heartiest good wishes for you as you are devoting your precious time out of your busy schedule to visit your near and dears in the hospitals. I am first time vising your blog and if my comments hurt you and you did not liked it, in that case please ignore thinking that these are the general public views as this is the hard truth that people like us have no idea to approach people like you and dhoni and you both will not respond to any of my comments isn’t it, yes. This is the truth. GOOD NIGHT.

    Dear Lena,

While we all wait for Mr. Bachchan to post, I would like to mention something about “War and Peace”, as encountered by us non-Russian speakers. When I first read it in German, a very long time ago, I thought it boring, believe it or not. Years later I found a translation by my favorite author Werner Bergengruen and decided to give it another try. What a difference!! For starters, the book was twice as long. And the language…. How much we are missing, even in a good translation….

Thank you for mentioning me in your greetings, I am very honored.

I will do my best to try and ignore their unkind comments at you.

  301. Renate in California says:

    Dear Sudhir,

This was not a personal challenge on my part. I am quite aware of the fact that medical resources, same as food, are extremely mismanaged in this world of ours.

I very much hope you (rather, time) will prove me wrong.

  302. Sudhir says:

    For AB & Renate,

    This is for a beginning.

    ———-

Since the swine flu hit, the stocks of some anti-flu drugmakers soared; Roche and GlaxoSmithKline saw boosts because of Tamiflu and Relenza, while smaller vaccine creators like Novavax (NVAX) and BioCryst (BCRX) saw share prices rise more than 70% in one day.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have 50 million treatment courses of such drugs as Tamiflu and Relenza. The agency says lab tests show the swine flu virus is “sensitive” to those treatments. The Department of Homeland Security has asked for $1.5 billion from the government to “acquire antivirals and invest in a vaccine,” though officials haven’t decided whether to produce a vaccine yet. The pharma maker Roche had $530 million in Tamiflu sales last year while GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) had sales of $105 million for Relenza.

Here’s a look at a few of the up-and-coming potential medicines and technologies that could help with swine and other types of flu strains in the future.

Baxter International: The drug giant, based in suburban Chicago, requested a sample of the swine flu from the World Health Organization to develop a candidate vaccine through vero-cell cultures, which creates the vaccine by growing the virus in animal cells instead of eggs.

Baxter (BAX, Fortune 500) used this method to develop Celvapan, a bird-flu vaccine that could be used if the WHO declared such a pandemic. It has already received approval for use in Europe and is awaiting approval in the U.S. A Baxter spokesman says a swine-flu vaccine made through vero-cell technology could take only 13 to 16 weeks to provide initial doses.

Novavax: Using technology based on recombinant virus-like particles, the same method used to develop Gardasil, the women’s HPV vaccine, Novavax is developing treatments for seasonal and bird flu. CEO Rahul Singhvi says the company could make a vaccine for swine flu within 10 to 12 weeks using VLP technology because scientists need only the genetic sequence of the virus (the swine flu sequence was released last week), instead of the virus itself, to create the vaccine.

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals: Instead of a vaccine, BioCryst is developing a flu antiviral that’s currently in clinical trials in Japan and the U.S. The medicine, which would differ primarily because it would be taken orally or inhaled (like Relenza), could prevent a “broad range of strains,” according to a spokesman. The 80-person company is developing the antiviral, called Peramivir, through a $103 million research grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

I will get to the bottom of this tomorrow.

    Sudhir

  303. Ramnarayan Natarajan says:

The middle finger of my left hand is stained - just like John Abraham’s. I still haven’t understood why it had to be the middle finger? What’s wrong with the index finger? This time, the quality of the indelible ink must have been pretty bad or it was horribly diluted, because the ‘dot’ became a stream!! It looks exceedingly ugly and the purple has trickled under my nail, where it shall remain for months! But I cast my vote, along with a first time voter - my daughter Anandita, who was both exhilerated and nervous. The entire voting process has been streamlined and people really ought not to crib if they have to wait in long queues - it only shows that democracy is alive and well. Sure, the weather was beastly, and there were no fans ( I had taken my own!), but I enjoyed the hour or so that it took to get to the booth. It was a great opportunity to catch up with people from the neighbourhood and figure out how they were planning to exercise their right to pick the right candidate. My only grouse… the spiffy electronic voting machine was hidden behind a torn up cardboard screen that was unbelievably shabby. Could we not get proper voting booths like they use elsewhere in the world?? Apart from that, I was reassured to see the turnout in our locality ( notorious for its indiffernce and apathy). Of course, it has everything to do with 26\11 - and why not? I voted for change and I hope so did many others. ENOUGH OF THE STATUS QUO.
I’m off to Pune tomorrow morning. The weather will be merciless by day. But what the hell. I love that city. And am looking forward to checking out a couple of new places. Stonewater Grill? My son Aditya will be joining us just for the day. No agenda while in Pune. But no laptop either! My next post will be on sunday. Till then… adieu. Mi yetey… barra ka??

    Respected Brother,
Please excuse me to use this space to clear some doubt..

    Dear Sudhir!

I do not understand this.. I tried to rope in Abhaya Sharma..Oh when was that I must have missed that completely.. and for your general information.. I like cricket but then that does not define my frequency.. your conclusion is not wrong but not entirely correct either.. no game or subject defines my frequency.. I know that is not a good thing.. I am nowhere.. Neither in science nor in sports.. Not in any sphere to be more precise..

Yet I would have loved to know what and where you wnated me and please excuse me if I missed your comments on something.. yes I am not so regular on reading fellow bloggers comments these days.. as I used to have.. and yes cricket or rather T20 cricket is high on my mind.. I do love the game of Hockey which I had played at the school level.. besides Chess and Table Tennis.. I now try my hands at snooker whe I get chance, time and mood…

Cricket in this format is very dear to me.. I am convinced it would soon hit higher popularity with more countries and it is also likely that we may see it make an appearance in the Olympics soon enough.. in my life time.. I may atleast be having 10 or 11 years of my useful existence..

I wish I could provide you an article that I wrote when India failed to qualify for Beijing Olympics in Hockey - It was one sad day of my life..

The best of the game in IPL 2 was palyed some few hours back between Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers of Bangalore where 18 of the overs were bowled by spinners.. and the man who took hat-trick and scored a brisk 50 did earn the man of the match buit lost the match as the other team displayed much more as a team collectively.. My respect for Kumble has gone up.. and so also for Praveen Kumar-his last over accounted for two batsman conceding just 4 runs.. if such people had been on the dropping list (he did not get a game against Delhi) it ndeed does not speak well of cricket administrators..

A Mini Report on the two games on May 1 2009

    Dear Brother
    Sadar Charan Sparsh

We had two good games and very close than the scores would or could suggest.. in fact Kolkata Knight Riders had more chance of pulling off the first one compared to Kings who failed by almost a similar margin in almsot identical fasshion.. bothe the chasing teams had got off to pretty good middle innings nut that was not good enough.. Quality bowlers in Malinga in Mumbai and Kumar clsoed the curtains on the two teams that were asked to chase the targets set by Mumbai and Bangalore..

My God Kings Xi had enough of personal glories on the day except the win in the game.. they had a hattick by their captain also a brisk 50 by him and though Abdulla won the purple cap - the two could not win the game for their team the other side played more as a unit and exceeded their performance collectively.. and that is how the T20 is more likely to be palyed as a unit and not as individuals..

I think I would be rather forced to make some space for Virat Kohli in the 16 that I suggested in the morning form team India for T20 world cup.. he definitely is outstanding in the field and quite a utility player.. he must find his way into the 16.. I am also impressed a great deal by Apanna’s two match performances as a new spinner with great promises..

If Duminy did it for Mumbai Van der Werne (excuse me buddy if I spelled you wrongly..) made the day for Bangalore..

    More Later

    Abhaya India May1/2 2009

  316. Sri Gogineni says:

    Dear Amitji,

Hope this finds you in the best health.

It brings immense happiness when we get to see you in the media. APJ Abdul Kalam, Amitabh Bachchan and Sachin Tendulkar defy the rules of mortality with their humility and humbleness.

I remember reading how you felt bad because a journalist invaded your sleep for an interview and published an “edited” version of it. I really felt sorry for you and to the celebrity clan in general too. But the way you have posed for the photographs after the voting is not up to the AB standards. You just found a convenient way to express your dissent over the media. What is worse is you are trying to cover it up saying others too did it. And the media, needless to say had no reason to broadcast it(including other bollywood stars). I’m sorry if I’m wrong but I feel you could have avoided it and set an example to the hawaldars, Johns, Vidyas, Ashs and Abhisheks. I just wished your subconscious antipathy towards media should have made way for your advertisement to utilize one’s constitutional rights.

Anyways, it is good to see you happy. All the three(APJAK, yourself & SRT) of you remind how much one can achieve without any background. Have a great day!

    Love,
    Sri :)

I am just common man but can understand that when you greet someone or congradulate someone do not keep expectation in return. I am referancing to your comment on Dhoni not responding when you greet.

I think you should not need to get publicity from these kind of stements.

God bless those, who try to get publicity from anything around them.

Good on you Dhoni, Just keep it up you are doing well.

PS: I am not fan of any one. But i like people doing good work in their field without any expectation.

    Mr. Bachchan,

What a disgusting way for an educated person coming from a respectable family to express himself and belittle our voting system. Not only did you flip the press, you also flipped everyone else who caught your photo - and some of them (like me) had actually visited your blog, only to be rudely flipped for absolutely no fault of mine.

Well, i hope you are happy flipping at your fans. And i guess it means you have also forgotten who made you a hero. Its selfish hypocrites like you that makes this world what it is today…

    /Samir

  320. Surta Ram Vishnoi says:

    Greatings,
Well done for trying to save from vote photo debate. I thought that your wiser than public, but now I amvery sure just a follower and not a thinker in taking iniciatives to judge your act before you react to some one’s (photographer’s or cameramen’s or a movie director on set………. and so on) instruction. There could be two reasons for that. Firstly, by the time passed and beeing in bollywood, you became just follower and lost your cognition. Secondly, you never had that cognition and that is more close to you success. Because a cognite person thinks before act and react, but irony lies int the act that thoughtful act and react is not easy to understand by masses and ultimately goes is vain. Goes wastefull because that thoughtfull act and reaction needs cognition intern to be understood wich is lacking……………………….(just jaya has showed that thoughtfull act by not following you, see one of picturs on voting day on your blog)
    Have a nice weekend

How intresting that the pictures you r showin with ABHI AND ASH showing middle finger has totally wrong meaning in western world that its a very very bad manner. If you are angry on someone by any reason than the person who gets angry show the middle finger the way you all except Jayaji showed.Same manner from contry to contry it changes. So if u do come to foreign please don’t show that finger.

    Hi AB,

It was a revelation to me that you could get such pleasure displaying the finger ….confirming you had cast your vote, was that gesture to the country or the papparazi …well I thought you are a learned person and a true artist…but this …it was dissappointing….

  324. anand says:

    hello amitji,

    just a quick note:

seems like something amiss in your blog and press has quickly pounced on it.

In one sentence you say you had sent message to Dhoni and in another you say
john has now give you the mobile number.

    and

about the finger thing, well middle finger could have been shown with the palm facing down. we do not need to ape the outside world well as kamal had said in one of his films, IF your ACT provides food for 4 people then anything ACT is okay. keep it up.

Liked the new looks of Abhishek, nice looks. We were having a get to gether today and discussion came about you, as what kind of films you are doing these days? (Nishabd, Boom, Cheeni Kum and Kabhi Alvida na Kehna) I told them that every person has a right to do what he thinks is right to do in life, I hope it still holds true in today’s life.

I have lot of things to ask and discuss, but don’t know it will be good or not. Hope its right since I feel that way, but still confused.

    Have a great day Sir.

    Good Pictures!

This picture shows that for all the professed polish and the high brow education one has to learn basic mannerisms and poise. That does not come from education but by upbringing. Mrs. Jaya Bachchan can be seen cringing to show the middle finger (she chose to show all the fingers). You can also see some more bollywood stars and so called celebrities putting up with a V sign to avoid showing the middle finger.

Any way the choice to show your middle finger was yours. Papparazi would have loved it if you could have shown anything alse too. thats their job any way. We have to choose what we show and how we show to our public.

Everytime I decide to venture into seeing something from bollywood something or the other always ticks me off. Sorry to give you this negative comment. I am not even sure it will stick on this blog…Naah…I know it will be deleted…But I had to say my piece!
