Prateeksha, Mumbai                November 15, 2008              10:42 pm

Another day at the movies.. ha..

My movie, TEEN PATTI AND ITS SHOOTING… resumed work today. Tiring and exhausting. And felt weak by the time it was over. I suppose it will take some time to be normal again.

Its the CAPITOL cinema opposite the VT Station. Old world construction, boxes and opera house like feel. So beautiful. Now abandoned and in a state. They shall probably bring it down and build another Mall and see it failing, as have many others that sprouted by the millions all over the countryside.. A pity.

I have faint memories of my first trip to Mumbai in the 50’s and our hosts, the JK Group, who were extremely close to my father, taking us out to the movies. I do not recollect which film it was, but I do remember sitting in a box in the cinema hall. Could well have been the CAPITOL or perhaps the OPERA HOUSE. What an age.

The floor of the cinema where we shoot has been stripped of its seating and our set erected there. It is interesting the way they use the surroundings. Most of the cast and crew are happy to meet me again. They inquire of my health. It’s a montage song that is being shot. No lip sync, thankfully. When the shot is getting ready I retire into the vanity and answer and acknowledge greetings and get well wishes from friends and well wishers. I read the papers. I find some articles interesting to be posted to you all. Unfortunately they have not arrived yet. Interesting comments. On reputation. The damage of which incurs severe legal action. There was a most interesting article on Mumbai and its inhabitants. How Mumbai was formed and who came here and how it grew. There was, lastly a review of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru’s book; A Discovery of India, and the speaking powers of our first Prime Minister and how those that had the power of speech became great leaders.

I must get that across to all. Frustrated that it was not scanned and put across to me.

Sorry for the interruption. I must leave to find out what indeed happened to them - the articles I mean.

Up very early tomorrow morning to visit two important ‘mazaars’ and two important ‘mandirs’. More of which I shall perhaps not be able to talk of, since the media accuses me of propagating superstition, a factor having serious concerns in the minds of those that have been given the task of guiding and guarding our morals and ethics and countenance - the Censor Board, administrators and of course politicians !!

I yawn heavily !! Must to bed !!

Good night, Shubh Ratri, Shabba Khair

    Dear Sir,
Looks like I’m one of the first one’s to comment to night. Without further ado, I would like to come to the point I have been seeking to make for some time. I have just finished reading a book named “Cuckold” by Mr. Kiran Nagarkar - an extremely powerful novel which has elicited a lot of critical and popular acclaim. Its essentially a narrative from the husband of Meerabai, the famous Bhakti saint. His life as the son of Rana Sanga, his life as a prince whose wife is in love with the divine, his politics, his progressive ideas, his wars, the climactic battle at Khanua with Babur and his and Rana Sanga’s end. Even while reading it, I could visualize Abhishek playing the role of the Maharaj Kumar, Aisharya playing the role of Meerabai and you, that of Rana Sanga. There is enough material to make it a brilliant movie which would be a critical and commercial success and prove to be the right showcase for Abhishek and Aisharya’s tremendous talents. Please please consider the idea. Thanks and god bless. btw, was blown away by your performance in “Last Lear”, which I saw recently -eagerly waiting to see Dostana.

Thank you for posting this to us even though you are so exhausted. We can wait for the articles. Don’t do any extra work right now.

That is such a shame about the CAPITOL cinema. Aren’t there enough malls in the world? Is there no group around that is trying to save it? The old 1929 Jersey City Loew’s was in danger of being torn down but the all volunteer group, Friends of the Loew’s has restored it enough for use as both a cinema and live theater. A movie palace has also been restored in the Bronx. The song “Burn Down the Malls” by Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper comes to mind.

Have a restful sleep and I hope you are energized for your long day tomorrow.

    Love,
    Rochelle

    My very dear Mr. Bachchan,

I have been trying to post my comments to you, and failed to do so twice, since morning, in reply to your posts of Day 205 & 205 collectively. I shall not try to recreate it again - but I am elated and a little anxious at the same time - elated for you to be getting back to work - it gives me immense joy to see you happy and at peace with yourself, and anxious because obviously, you are not a hundred percent recovered yet! You will take of yourself, I know that, but still….?

I would like to congratulate you and every Indian across the Globe, for India having made a place for Herself on the Moon! I can well imagine Dr. Masoom Raza’s disillusionment that day, when he remarked that man’s presence on the moon would take away from the romanticising of it from then on - something to that effect it was, wasn’t it ?

Well, this is life, one cannot be, in the presence of the other - after all, such things are only posssible when we speak of a Divine Dichotomy!!

Please do take care of yourself, and I hope you have a peaceful ‘Darshan” tomorrow morning, both at the Mandirs and the Mazaars. And my congratulations to Abhishek for Dostana - I believe it’s a run-away riot!! God Bless.

    Love,
    Always,

This reminds me about the importance the cinema halls / talkies used to have in our lives about 30-40 years back. The films that I saw that ti in Bhagwan and Bharat Talktes in Agra -as a result of mass bunking school classes are still fresh in my mind. But the same I can’t say about most of the films I have seen during last 20 years or so.

Cinema used to be an important element of lives.

I have been reading through your thoughts and the ones posted by the readers on India’s achievements in Space . It indeed as we know is a great milestone in India’s History. However , I have always observed during my professional stints in other countries (prefer not to mention them) that people there are quite reluctant in accepting India as an emerging power. A comment by a cricketer few days back referring India as a “Third World” country is an example of this.

Not that we need their acknowledgement , we know we can compete with anyone in the World and it is a matter of time before we surpass them but in general is there something on the Perception Management/Creation front that there are gaps.

Also, the international media (local newspapers , channels abroad) hardly carries or carries limited news on India. On the contrary , our media covers them in abundance.

    Anyway , just a thought.

Great Achievement and kudos to all the Scientists and other personnel who have made every Indian proud.

    Sir,
In faith there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don’t. Faith is the force of life.Only God can fill the emptiness of humans’ heart. To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.
No Sir , I don’t think that you are propagating superstition by visiting Temples .Trouble is reporters don’t know when or where to stop. They follow you even to temples .The media’s interest in famous people not only intrudes on their privacy, making their lives miserable, but also causes their credibility to be damaged. Therefore, the media should not pay too much attention to their private lives and respect them so that they can lead a normal life just like everyone else.
I think everybody deserves a private live–even celebrities .It’s weird that if celebs do something perfectly normal newspapers spin it into a story.Celebs totally have a right to have a private life. They’re human too, aren’t they?

Sir, sometimes there are very strange coincidences between u and me (though I am feeling uncomfortable comparing me with u, but pls excuse me for this today).

You saw ur first film in 1950, ie when u were 8 years old. I saw my first film when I was in 2nd standard and 8 years old (must be 1973).

..But there is a difference, u don’t remember the name of the film, whereas I remember not only the name but also the actors and the scenes of the film. The name of the film was”AArzoo” and a scene which I remeber vividly was Mahmood talking to his friend- a hen. and the last scene where Rajendra kumar screams in a snowy terrain–Usha…Usha…Usha.

…But I regret. Had I forgotten the name of the film, I would have also become AMITABH BACHCHAN. Ha..Ha..Ha

Yes, after a break it it is bound to take a little while to get back to full working fitness, so please do try to build up your schedule gradually.

Good news from these shores. I tried to see Dostana this afternoon at a central London cinema (Piccadilly Circus Trocadero) and both the 5 and 8pm performances had already sold out. Very disappointing for me, but obviously the film is a massive hit with the NRI audience.

I am dying to see it. Purely to study the film for Karan Johar’s groundbreaking exploration of 21st century socio-sexual mores, in the context of mainstream commercial cinema, with particular reference to the transgressive nature of the metrosexual male archetype …. and certainly not to ogle fit young men such as J. Abraham and A. Bachchan Jr - lest Rose C or any other dares to cast aspersions on my motives :)

    Dear Mr.Bachan,
U’ve always promoted family values in your movies.
Your atention is drawn to the recent and very disturbing stories:
one where ..in the Uk a mother stabs two of her children to death.
and prior to this the children were subject to abuse on 50 different occassions (childcare failed to perform its duty)..
wht makes it worse is that ..it wasnt crime on impulse ..but the poor children remained subject to abuse ..

2nd this horror story in germany where a father kept his daughter locked in the cellar for 24 old yrs and became a father of seven children from her ..not just that ..but a father of her children as well..

but these horrific tales arent limited to goras or any particular race ..
child abuse is common place in both india and pakistan as is mentally stifling the child..
sad to see that some parents see their children as investments ..

but who will speak for these children ?
you very often advocate respects for parents ..ive been blessd with good parents ..who are worthy of worship ..
but not everyone is tht lucky..

have seen moral values degraded at parental level which is extremely sad ..and someone at your level might be able to do something..
we need to save our children ..

    hi Mr. Bachchan

In the time of Obama, its interesting that you recall probably the most charismatic leader of post Independence India. There are numerous accounts of his stamina, of being a workaholic and the broadest of viewpoints which, he would bring to a specific issue.
He was an exceptional orator and writer, a text such as ‘Glimpses of World History’ reveals a interest not just in Indian past, but that of other civilizations too… certainly not a parocial mind.
Yes, there are those that view Nehru not so ….. he was to this… and to that…. and not enough of this… for one thing….
Well he gave a excellent Higher education system… (well not bad from the position it started from) and without which, it would have been highly improbable to take advantage of the ‘open markets’. So there.

    Amitji,

Blog to me is a place where one could speak his mind abt everything under the sky. The fact that you write “More of which I shall perhaps not be able to talk of, since the media accuses me of propagating superstition” makes me feel you are holding back the freedom of speech right which happens to be “the” reason one blogs.

You calculated your words in your interviews to magzine, newspaper and television which is understandable, but media cannot control you on your own blog.

If you are worried abt hurting sentiments of people from other religion , than they need to understand that you are just sharing your experience of visiting a temple or mazaar as you would share your experience abt nice location you visited or a new city you travelled to. If they cannot understand this, they need to grow up. You cannot cater to few narrow minded people and media at the cost of deperiving millions of other fans from your experience of visiting a holy place.

Would like to hear your thoughts on freedon of speech on Blog.

It will be tiring for few days, the body is not used to a long day.I have lived in Mumbai, still visit often, I can imagine the traffic. It is a nighmare going from Your home - Juhu to V.T your place of shooting. The travel itself would have made you half tired. Though I live in USA, I have a clear picture of Mumbai. Places you have visited in childhood needs no movie or tape , the mind can immediately REWIND THE PAST.

I saw Big B in real for the first Time**
    ****Prateeksha, _____________________Mumbai September 29, 2008 6.15pm
Evening 6.15pm, I happened to pass through a road in front of Juhu beach, where I noticed around more than 100 people gathered in front of a bunglow and Yes, it was Prateeksha–Mr Bachchan’s home.
I am living in Mumbai since birth for 25 years. Often I have passed through the roads in Juhu and quite often I see people standing in front of the house. I used to pass by and always wonder do these fans actually get to see Big B or do they just stand for hours and leave dejected. But i never stopped n waited to see wat happens to them.
Today was the day, I actually parked my car in a corner and joined the crowd among hundreds. Among the crowd stands auto drivers, students, business men. People from all walks of life standing together waiting eagerly just to get a glimpse of their favourite star. All eyes stuck on the huge “Wooden Door” which would open a litle for few secs n close, Open n Close.. Security guards to go in n come out. This continued for 45 mins. Some people were tired and hopes given up. I thought this was my 1st n last time.
But then out of nowhere a BMW followed by Police van came. The BMW entered the huge “Wooden Door” into Prateeksha. The “Wooden Door” closes.
SILENCE follows for few secs. I thought MR. Bachchan would sit in the car n leave.
Now after few mins the “Wooden Door” opens slowly n completely. And here he was “Mr. Bachchan” himself, he came out of the gate himself standing in front of us in his white kurta covered with a shawl started waiving at the crowd to everyone possible in all directions for around 4 mins. Crowds in hundreds started to waive n roar, click snaps. traffic stopped. I just stood can’t believe my eyes.I was standing on the divider of the road facing his bunglow, for a second I felt he actually looked at me n waived.. I did’nt waive back coz I was still standing in dis belief..
The huge ˜Wooden Door” closes.. People happy.
    Crowds slowly disappear..
Parting words from some people to each other,,,

  62. Dr. Reena Riyaz says:

    Dear Amitji,

You mention in your post that you would be visiting two mazaars. Would these visits be a personal visit or part of a shoot?

Visiting mazaars in order to get one’s muraad or to ask for anything, seeking intercession of the deceased in the HUZOOR of ALLAH for fulfillment of one’s prayers, is actually discouraged.

This practice is an innovation of people and seriously it goes against Islam and Sunnah…every human must ask from God directly, there is no human who has the right to intercede for one’s just prayers except Huzoor (pbuh) and to bow only to God and none else.

Each and every human being has a hotline connection to God, and He is closer to us than our juggler vein, what is it that He knows not of the desires, needs and grief of the heart, what is it that He knows not of each hearts intentions…. No matter how vile a person has been the Almighty is oft returning,

So ask of Him alone for no one can plead one’s case in HIS court better than oneself.

The practice of going to mazzaars and doing sajjdahs and tying of threads etc is superstition, it finds no relevance in THE TRUTH revealed..the only advantage in visiting a mazzaar would be in praying for the soul of the deceased and thus earning spiritual reward for praying for another soul.

Amitji in case its for a shoot, then no problem, however its a hollow practice and I hope other readers may gain some insight from this as well. The practice ought not be promoted.

    humbly
    Reena

What a pity about the grand old theatres…sigh…you know I’ve always, always had this what I think to be a novel idea, a grand old hall revamped and bought upto date with modern tech. and they exclusively play old movies- the classics from b&w all the way up to 99. I think this is a brilliant concept, I know I would pay the same money to see anyone of the classics on the big screen as I would for a new release..perhaps even more.
Alot of us..and I mean ALOt would love to see the movies we grew up watching on the VCR on the big screen…ah such pleasure. I am game if only I could make others see reason..this has it all!

Dear Amitji, It is an irony that we find it difficult to maintain old charm and succumb to commerce and destroy the old architecturally created buildings. How many malls are doing well. It is difficult to understand why so many malls are coming up when people just go there for time pass and no real purchasing takes place.
There is also a richness in preserving the old but people want gold. So old is gold in a different sense now.
It is nice to read comment by Dr. Reena Riyaz,I too agree with what she says and refrain from asking a mannat this way. I believe in my hot line to God and more than that choose to work hard. In my bad times I avoid reading weekly bhavishya or daily horrorscope. I believe in living one day at a time and doing my best under the circumstances. Theories of bad times create inaction and days are idled and lost needlessly. Nevertheless I donot question anyone of how he proceeds with his faith because that is his prerogative and I would rather respect that.
Tolerance is better practiced when you are all absorbing respectfully and doing what you feel right silently without any propaganda.
I like the way Kabir and Rahim wrote and also how Ram and Rahim make another R&R.
Good to see you shooting and see how difficult it is now becoming to get a period location. Gandhi movie was shot in Pune and many lanes just replicated Africa but in future if such shoots are needed same Pune will have nothing to offer. This is part of mall culture that is a wild fire engulfing us. So many glass houses?
Got to go for walk got up early and that mobile is snoozing asking me artificially uthjao bhaiyyaa.
