An interesting article from the media on the media.
On print media taking on the electronic.
There is I observe a great amount of such discussion and debate in the print media. I find it fair and unbiased and relevant. And I find it necessary to talk about, because I find its relevance in today’s society of great importance. We are being bludgeoned with an excess that can prove deconstructive. It needs correction, that is obvious, but it needs to be feared !!

Please don’t forget and do share with us what you feel about drona as a movie made by your kids.
As I told you earlier also that I am a bit disturbed after reading negative reviews about Drona so I will anytime go by your word. I still have to wait to get the dvds here in USA so I cannot see the movie till now.

TV news is pure punishment with breathless young anchors breaking down due to the breaking story rush. they r permanently charged up and every channel has a permanent scoop. The print media has more time and is not as evanescent as the spoken word..perhaps that is what gives it more responsibiliy in what it says. unfortunately we cannot entirely do without the TV news, and tere is tremendous scope for professionalism and maturity. I feel the TV media has much to introspect about.

TV’s or computers cannot replace books. Most of the news channels today, especially Hindi, are scrap. English news channels are of course better like Times Now, etc. Now-a-days, I have started fascinating for myself a room without TV, only books and may be a radio to listen old songs.
I had started reading your blog only a few weeks ago (since raj controversy) but now I am a regular. I did not commented then, but today I am writing to you. I do not endorse Raj’s views. I am even planning to stage a play to put across my viewpoint.
Your also wrote about your French project. I sincerely want to see you in international projects.
I wanted to work with great actors like Amrish Puri, etc. but they are no more. I do theatre and aspire to work with other greats like you, Om Puri, etc.
May be I am aspiring too much, but it is my dream. I want to raise my voice against anything which threatens the democratic, secular, pluralistic character of our country and until I become big, I will do it via theatre.

It’s a “Brave New World” out there with the various forms of media. But “Truth” is what often takes a backseat, to sensationalism etc. Add bloggers to the mix, and it can become very difficult to know what is Truly happening in the world out there. Whether its something as “trivial” as whether a movie is a hit or a flop (where various people with various agendas will come up with various verdicts), or something more serious…

You posted so much 5 minutes before I left work for my mile walk to the train that It will keep me busy on my laptop. The only thing I watch on TV is movies. I work in the cable TV industry but mostly on movie channels. Still I wouldn’t watch these channels except IFC if I didn’t get paid to. If it keeps me out of the loop of mainstream society, so much the better. The one thing that is keeping me from reading more books is this stupid computer, which I didn’t have before you started blogging! So you see it’s all your fault! JUST KIDDING AROUND.

A very thought-provoking post, Mr. Bachchan. I feel in a world of 24×7 media…with every channel propagating some talking head, it’s often difficult to get an unbiased, untainted view…here in the US, we are in the midst of one of the most important elections ever, and every TV channel has a hidden agenda (which is not so hidden if you read between the words)….the print media is also tainted…e.g., the New York Times is now one of the most liberal left wing publictions in print!
The price of obtaining alternative views is falling fast. And the main expense today is the value of our time. How much time do you spend every day reading the newspapers? In stead of reading newspapers, we tend to now visit websites. It’s faster, easier, and with a click we can get information on anything we want. We live in a news-overload mode at all times. With search engines like Google, we have too much on our plates. However, with volume comes confusion. It becomes increasingly difficult to differentiate between fact, fiction, and plain ol’ sensationalism. Just my two cents.

Dear Sir,
Hope you are doing great ! Nothing today about what is going on at your end. A small observation - I am perplexed at the use of word ‘deconstructive’. It can certainly not be used interchangeably with ‘destructive’. I can see how destructive fits in your sentence right there. Can you please elaborate ?
Now some positive criticism - ‘chota muhan badi baat’ …but I do want to bring your attention to this so please excuse me for saying this. I have noticed that, off late, some of the necessary punctuation is missing from your writing making the meaning and intent less clear in the first reading. Needless to say you write extremely well because you are so well-connected with all the things you write about, there is so much depth and fine details on the subject at hand. But Sir, if anything is not packaged right, it does not get it’s fair share of appreciation and in this case, it’s fair share of understanding too.
Now when people like are us are making comments on your blogs, there are mistakes plenty. Some due to ignorance, some in the urgency to communicate, we just type and hit . No comparison at all. But I would certainly like to see that polish in your writing just because it is YOU !!
And also let’s not forget that these are all going into a book some day and you do not want to run the risk of being misinterpreted
Love you loads
Take Care !

Dear AB,
It’s great balancing act to keep your comments limited and still precise on Drona. I haven’t seen it so it will be unfair to talk about it.
Lately one has found U more philosophic, pure and holistic in approach and comments. It’s troubled time and U have shown remarkable communication skill to calm down and perhaps change the minds of some. Your apology, restrain to jump in ugly debates and sharing these remarkable quotes is an act of intelligence and compassion. Only Love can destroy all negetivity, violence and corruption. It’s the most dangerous weeopen human needs in this volatile time.
After reading these wonderful quotes from U one feels very hesitant to talk about mechnical, corrupt and shellow electronic media. Is it worth to talk about them at all? Wouldn’t be wise and prudent not to talk about them and just change, boycott and stop them? After all we have remotr in our hand.

Media provides mediation between humans, that is its function. But this can become very dry hence some speculation is introduced; editors bring in their politics. You dont see that tabloids have a function of clearing the air… the viewer gets some masala without a formula. The rest is upto the viewers intelligence IF they have any. So please do not discount the value of gossip or of tabloids, infact i would recommend you as the leader of the film industry, to start a tabloid with your intelligence, though not as an editor… because editors should be extraordinary individuals who like to communicate with a visionary view to the health of society… without protecting anyone, especially “family”.

Good article, and valid points. Electronic media has inundated us but nothing takes place of having a good book to read. I have tried to download and read off the net but it is not the same thing. Until a few years ago, I used to have to write with my hand to get the juices flowing, thoughts would just not come to me until the pen was in hand.
I miss the days when one waited for letter and the love and joy of reading those letters…that is an art form that is lost. Love letters sent to you by someone so near and dear…How can one express those sentiments in an email or msn…just seems colder. I remember when I got engaged back in the 90s and was in India to do my wedding shopping. The letters that my husband sent to me then I cherish and hold dear to my heart still.
Children growing up now, do not know a time when there was no internet, email, msn. They are so used to communicating through this medium that they don’t even know what they miss. They don’t know how to start a letter nor type out all their words…everything is abbreviated. I need a dictionary to decipher the lingo.

Again some explosions in Agartala .The bombers are doing it to book their seats in Paradise & gain 32 virgins & all luxuries for each as given in chapter 55 of their book & also prodded on by their radical leaders who never denounce or deny this . Even Pak papers carry letters regarding this well known motive . Already SRK has given a timely advise to them to refrain -what about you ?;;. Your comments- coming from a senior, unbiased ,non-political icon of the young– will surely have a sobering effect on the young bombers. So give your advise frequently in your columns- Simply expressing regret & sympathy & pushing the problem under the carpet is not enough ;;; Other goody goody comments from an ivory tower will not do ;;;

Hmm not sure if i entirely agree with this article though! The speed at which the digital media is taking pace, it’ll become even harder for print to warrent its place in the market. It’s a challenge we’ve been facing since quite sometime now, however i’m sure that print won’t go anywhere- it’s here to stay!
Thought i’d share a link to the world’s first print newspaper dated back in 1609!

Dear Amitji
i agree with what the article says…electronic media can never replace the print media and what a irony we are discussing the print versus electronic media debate, supporting the print media via electronic media(Web & email does count under electronic …right)
I would always go for print as they give you the sense of touch, feel and fragnance too..just remember the good old days of writing and receiving letters and cards…now it is all emails & ecards…they are fast, easy & reach millions by one clcik … but lack the warmth…i am use them daily but miss the old charm.
Similary the comparison between the still photography and digital cameras…still photographs were given for developing and then printed and you waited for the results with anticipation and then framed, but with digital camera now u get instant results, delete the ones u dont like and upload and download them, hardly ever print them. Digital or still both have their pros and con…i use the digicam but I miss the still cameras and photographs…
Hope to see u sometime, somewhere in this lifetime ….and take a picture with u from my digital camera which i shall get printed and framed ;-O)
that’s all for now
love u loads

hi Mr. AB
There is the widely held opinion that the media can lead stories, rather than follow the facts or essence of an story. For instance, in Gujarat anyone with a sound mind and an open heart would recognise that there has been policies practised by the state government that are contrary to the spirit of the Indian Constitution and International Human Rights law, it is the failure of the demos cum civil society that such ‘horrible’ groups/individuals have such an significant voice.
Indentity politics is in my view, base and most un-sophisticated form of public discourse, and reflective of a narrow and insecure world view -

Mr. Bachchan,
The media in general needs to be dialed down a notch. The media has become overbearing and too aggressive these days. It has resulted in the media doing anything they can to try and get the top story to get ratings. So much so that they even have taken to focusing on gossip or even fabricating the news to suit their agendas or the bottom line. The media needs to be reigned in. I also want to touch upon the strike going on the in the Hindi film industry. I’m all for the workers getting what the want in terms of better work hours, better working environment, and better pay, etc. I hope they get what the want and the strike will be resolved really soon for everyone in the industry.
Best wishes!!

Sir, There is too much on 24×7 TV today agreed. One can always put limits to what one wants to see. But we have no control over the commercial breaks. Media of one type will surely get influenced by the other since they feel they are competing for attention. Content sells ultimately. If news channels show same footage again and again people get bored.
Insensitivity is the reason why last line mentioned about jawan in J&K. One has to train on good thought process off work so that such words like compromising donot occur to you. During Kargil also such faux-pause was created by one of todays famous TV journalist who covered the war.
You should be in the company of good thoughts when alone. This can influence your tongue. Even in print media the language is sometimes poor. You get to read unchecked work for spellings. Anyone can take on anyone flaws can be always found. A flawless performance needs heart and mind at the right place well co-ordinating between them. The whole team has to work towards a flawless performance. Sometimes a small flaw breaks monotony of whole function which otherwise would be going smoothly. Our designer wardrope malfunctios can be stitched/unstitched in to the act.
One example was of a clown performing in a show. He rolled down from the steps and when landed on the ground was actually dead. Everyone was laughing on the really dead man. Question:where did the humour end?
So the debate between efficacy of one as against the other will continue and people have to choose what influences them. Given the option I would live away from any news becase it shows more of end of lives and violence. Good things need to be projected. I hate you Mr. Bachchan when you come in the ads in midst of a good TV programme. So this love hate relationship will be there. Not that I like you so much that I started eating Chavyanprash. Well that’s my choice strong enough but that is my life. I have never watched a first day first show in my life. I wait for the real feedback that’s from our children who insist it is a good movie and you budda buddi should see it.
When one media cuts in to the territory of other the real affect starts. Today both are doing well in their uncompromising positions.
Regards
Ravi P Malhotra

Print needs to pull up its controls too, so often damaging news, financial news, is printed without validation and all one can do is to send politely angry letters to the editor!
TV is full time pass. Sadly- the news channels too.
Once upon a time credibility and accountability were important.

Dear Mr. Bachchan
I agree that there is excessive TV media, but isn’t the choice with us, the so called beings with supreme intelligence? It is the same debatable question like the egg and the chicken, which came first…is the media catering to us because we make the choice to watch or we watch because it is an easy way out to relieve our stress of day to day life, or it makes us feel better because we feel there are other people out there with worse problems than we have? An interesting topic indeed. Glad to see that you are out of your dark mood.

Reading a news paper can be more of a leisure activity. You can select the article and go through it silently. about TV that too 24*7 is really going to kill you. Even if you go on change the cannel you can’t escape it .all the channels are showing the same (clip version of the story up teen times. You will be nailed! Best option shut the TV. Go for walk.fellow walkers will tell you news in a different manner. Discuss with them empty your mind come back and sleep. You don’t need to be the first one to know where when blast went. Yea TV helps us to get to know about world wide news, get entertained with movies, foreign and national as well. but i believe that TV has another job that it does unconsciously. it is one of the ways that really help shape minds and thoughts, especially for children and youth who are more exposed to TV and electronic media, and who don’t have an interest in books for instance. but what is more dangerous is that TV teaches nothing of value. A lot of TV channels, competing, without a real content.
Well…we will not be able to get rid of it, yea it is something that has been imposed on us. But at least we need to know how to be selective, especially with regard to our children.

Sir,
That is an interesting article. I wonder if someone can write about life of an actor and films like this. You know like one actor actually speaking the truth about life as an actor. With so much being written about, it is actually difficult to always tell as to what is true and what is false. Just a thought!

I Agree. Print media can never be superceded by electronic media. But it is influenced to some extent by e-media. Print media is also taking steps to renovate itself to maintain its supremacy.
There are some news channels which show everthing except news. They should be nominated for best entertainment news channels. They are giving e-media a bad shape. There should be a governing body for e-media.

Hi Amitji,
Quite like reading the quotes you post from others. Have mentioned to my family that I have taken a liking to reading you blog on a daily basis (if not every 2nd day=sometimes life too busy or too tired). They question whether it really is you or is someone doing for you.. I reply that yes it is you 100%. I have full faith in you and have never really thought about it.. Hope DRONA works out for Abhi. He has become quite an actor in his own right. Enjoy watching him and Aish together infilms. KNK and Guru were great films. My learning hindi words is slowly picking up. Have not yet tried to speak, somewhat shy to get it wrong. Not sure if I mentioned last time I wrote but love the new pic of Abhi.
Will sign off now…
Just wanted to say hi.
Bless you and Jaya aunty and the rest of ur family…
Take care

Dear Amitabhji,
I believe that to watch too much TV channel is wasting time & energy by giving too much importance to TV channels. I need to give attention to my kids that are they watching too much TV, now I am giving attention & I found that most of the time TV is on but no one is watching, so I started switch off TV. Very few programmes we watch. About print media, its really essential part in day to day life. Without print media I feel incomplete, even though PC became essential part in my life but print media is also essential part in my life. I can’t say this is better or that is better. One thing is true some TV channels are not doing worthwhile. Their focus is on earning money through advertisement instead of giving good & worthwhile things to public.
Anyway, what we r doing is, taking things only of our interest other things ignoring.
With lot of Love

Respected Sir,
I am your biggest fan after Abhishek Bachchan. God! there is so much competition for that number, your no 2 fan, but I am ahead of other guys……..
I am Pankaj M., currently based in U.S.A. and have seen your Movies from the age when I started talking….and because of the influence of You and Your Acting on my life Sir, I have become a Director.
Your Acting has inspired me to become a Director after I had quit Mechanical Engineering ….And it happened only because of your great performances in every Movie….
Your perfection with the art of acting is so great that when I saw Al Pacino,Marlon Brando or any other Actor in Movies from Hollywood, France, England, well from every corner of the world;NO ONE WAS AT YOUR LEVEL… your acting dominated the eye of the camera, you are the Most Versatile and Complete Actor in the World Sir……..
Sir, you are the best thing to happen to the World Cinema…I mean it from the bottom of the heart…My Desi friends sometimes try to imitate your dialogues from AGNEEPATH, DEEWAR, SHARABI, almost all Movies….Your Movies Sir, are a part of life of every Indian….We are addicted to your Movies..I am grateful to my Parents who always have been your fans, to take me to your Movies..I remember the time when the Military theatre in my hometown, Aurangabad, Maharashtra used to exhibit your Movies 3 days in a week…especially SHOLAY, KALA PATTHAR, DEEWAR, again and again….
I remember all of us clapping on your entry, laughing on your jokes and crying when something bad happened to you in the Movie..Even now, when I am 32, I can’t see you in pain in Movies, like the end of Sholay, Muqaddar ka Sikandar,Deewar,Black…such is the impact of your great acting…..Infact me and my friends started hating Actress Rakhee after you die for her in MUQADDAR KA SIKANDAR, we loved You and still love You much I also remember in early 80’s there was a comics called “VIJAY COMICS”, a series based on you, which was a superhero character…
We were so obssesed about you, me and my friends used to claim that your house had floors equivalent to the date of our respective birthday’s..such was our obsession and the love has increased day by day exponentially……
Here in U.S.A. all of my American friends know you and they have seen Black, which is their all time favourite Movie….
I remember your interview where you had compared the impact of 2001:A SPACE ODYSSEY with the impact of the song KHWAJA, JODHA AKBAR…..I loved your thoughts, your views…Stanley Kubrick is my all time favourite Director…..
Sir, I also remember when you were asked about the Actors that influenced you in your yound age..And my God, that list was so awesome….
And even now when some people are trying to create hurdles in your life using some media reporters, politicians..millions and millions of your fans support you and if we hate those people and a day will come when we will come on the road for you, will do anshan, anything it takes to teach these people a lesson….Our own people give us pain, thats what happened to my family when I got a Scholarship to study B.F.A. in Film Direction in U.S.A., they gave pain to me and my family out of jealousy,as I belong to a middle class family. My Parents who are very old, are still going through hell because of some bad people..thats how some people are in our country….
But you are an inspiration in this situation Sir, I will fight back with wisdom the way you are doing….
And now that I am ready as a Director, I just pray to the Almighty that my first Movie with be with you Sir, that will be a Dream come true…I don’t wan’t anything else in my life……
I have started writing 2 Scripts one is for an English Movie and the other is my Dream Project “Shahenshah 2″,which will be the best Superhero Movie of the world, very intense and very different in terms of aesthetics, action, special effects…..I don’t know if someone else is officially writing a Script for “Shahenshah 2″ or who has the rights for it. God forbid if that has already been done, then please give me a permission to create a new superhero character for you….Please guide me Sir, and give me a an opportunity to fulfill my Dream of working with You, which is every Director’s dream…….
Sir, my family and millions of families worldwide pray for The Bachchans…..
Your No. 2 Fan,
Pankaj M.

Hi
Your intentions and love for the society and our country is commendable. However, today the society is run by essentially politicians and (their) bureaucrats. Like you said in your previous post corruption in minds ruins everything. Their intentions may be noble but at heart they are all corrupt (majority) and handful of people of are capable of changing this (including our chief mentor of this blog) have chosen to either keep away or just ignore it….
Who is going to do it….may be somebody has to come forward and take lead….
lots of love
Naresh

Mr.Bachchan I loved this particular blog (166).I read it again &again. Tried to understand what you want to covey actually. But all the human beings don’t have that much of courage .because they’re human beings nor super human. It may be easy for you quote success is not final. Because you are on top position. For those strugglers struggling for years couldn’t reach anywhere what about them. Most of them go into deep depression and end their lives. They loose their courage! It is very difficult to survive with out any moral support. I wish more people read this particular blog of yours, and pacify themselves. Only people who are destined they will reach the top! Any how I regularly read your blogs and put some sense into myself sometimes in vain! Any way thank you very much!—jaya

Dear Amitji,
I have posted my views on the media in the previous post. You simply have to see how they covered the red carpet at the Drona premiere to see how they ‘read between the lines’. Actually they invent things as they are both ‘newsless’ and clueless.
They have gone completely berserk. Forget spelling and grammar, they have lost their sense of decency too.

Mr. B,
I am a great lover of technology but no one can replace paper. Be it newspaper, our writing pad, books and magazines. These days ebooks have become popular and CD-ROM’s of books that can be listened in car during commute. These are all great means to gain information and knowledge but serve as no replacement to plain old paper.
So all the fellow fans and bloggers please subscribe to atleast one print and support the print industry.
Regards,
Bhavana
