Hysterics over Histrionics
The desperation to remain in the limelight is symptomatic of the insecurities every superstar suffers from, writes Derek Bose
Amitabh Bachchan is having to face a lot of flak these days, for reasons not entirely of his own making. Wherever he goes, his handlers are holding what is known as “meet-and-greet” programmes. It means that for a certain sum of money, you purchase the right to shake Bachchan’s hand, pose for a keepsake picture and walk away with his autograph. No receipt is issued for the amount paid and there is no guarantee that your turn in the queue would come before the megastar runs out of patience, ups and walks away. But it is a chance people are taking. And when things don’t work out their way, they are throwing a fit.
Now Bachchan claims that he is not a party to any such commercial arrangement and has asked his fans for documentary proof of moneys paid and commitments dishonoured. According to him, he meticulously abides by what he is contracted to do and if there is anything out-of-the-way he does to please his fans, it is purely a goodwill gesture. Quite clearly, he cannot be held responsible for some foolish people who want to part with their money or for the racketeers out to make a fast buck using his name.
What Bachchan and indeed, all top-ranking stars cannot deny is that the “meet-and-greet” is always a welcome activity on the sidelines of a concert tour as it reinforces their standing in public eye. It contributes immensely to the fanfare surrounding stardom. Nothing can be more disappointing to a movie star for the public to be indifferent to his/her presence, or worse, being completely ignored. Stars survive on public adulation and invite as much chaos and confusion, controversies, discord and disturbance they can, if only to raise their stocks a few notches higher.
At least Shah Rukh Khan has been frank enough to admit that he enjoys being mobbed and wants people to stand outside the gates of his house chanting his name every morning. He sees no point in a star trying to “hide” behind dark glasses after spending half his life to be recognized. On his part, he has gone to exceptional lengths to extract full mileage from his star status, from dancing at weddings to making an appearance on the cricket field to promote a film to actually sponsoring a cricket team… And he makes no bones about it. Other stars are only now picking up the tricks of the trade from him.
The desperation to remain in the limelight is symptomatic of the insecurities every superstar suffers from. But today, this anxiety has turned into a fierce battle of one-upmanship, fuelled largely by two factors. One, never before has so much money been chasing so little talent in Bollywood. From monstrous paychecks to multi-movie contracts and profit-sharing deals with multinationals, the perks associated with stardom are absolutely mind boggling. Everybody is determined to make the most of this situation in the fastest possible time. For, there can be no saying when the bubble will burst. And nobody wants to miss the bus.
The second and more important factor stems from a general acknowledgment of the fact that a film’s box-office run is no longer dependent upon the looks, personality or histrionic ability of its lead actors. More films with rank newcomers are proving to be bigger hits than those with established stars. In fact, there is very little a star brings on the table that another actor cannot in order to pull off a hit. That even freshers like Ranbir Kapoor and Harman Baweja (with major flops behind them) are going places is indicative of the intensity of competition around.
To make matters worse, the room at the top has already become overcrowded. From a time when there used to be one Rajesh Khanna or an Amitabh Bachchan to rule Bollywood, we moved into an era when the three Khans ~ Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir ~ called the shots. Now, there are at least three other frontrunners snapping at the heels of this triumvirate. Akshay Kumar is on an unprecedented roll. Hrithik Roshan is a long distance prospect. And Saif Ali Khan is the joker in the pack, capable of upsetting the applecart any time.
Till that happens, it is a level playing field out there. And since talent, seniority and acting ability have ceased to matter, the war for box-office supremacy has spilled beyond the silver screen. Today, it is being fought on six fronts:
l Television: We have all seen it happen: Just before a film’s release, members of the cast start popping out of every channel posing as chat show guests, celebrity judges or simply giving interviews. The film is released and they are gone!
l Awards’ functions: No awards’ function recognizes merit, but making an appearance at the event matters ~ be it as a performing monkey, the show host or as presenter of the trophies. It is all for a consideration, but adds to good PR as well.
l Overseas shows: There’s big money in this. But more than moolah, it helps to expand the star’s fan base, strengthens bonds with colleagues and sends out signals to others in the industry about who is with whom and how!
l Film parties: Never before has the guest list of film parties become as important as it is now. For those who attend, it establishes allegiance to a certain camp. And for the star host, it establishes the clout he enjoys in the industry.
l Sweetheart deals: Every time Shah Rukh appears in a Karan Johar show or Katrina Kaif plays ball with Salman or Amitabh drops in at the premiere of Aamir Khan’s nephew’s film… you should get the drift.
l Blog wars: The ultimate free-for-all space for every self-obsessed star to brag and abuse, rave and rant, crib and curse… As of now, Bachchan’s blog attracts maximum traffic among the stars, followed by Aamir’s.
These are well thought-out strategies for sustaining star power, far more effective and long lasting than short-term publicity stunts like rumour mongering and planting salacious stories in the media. At times, things do turn ugly ~ as in the case of Shah Rukh almost getting into blows with Salman at Katrina’s birthday bash. But from a long-term perspective, nobody can do without these measures for building their brand equity. After all, Bachchan has taught them that there is no age for retirement in films. And with all major stars having crossed 40, it is imperative they devise ways to extend their shelf life. This, essentially, is the Big Picture.
Letting their work speak for themselves, obviously, does not fit into this scheme of things.

Dear Amitji..
Just now I sent a message for your previous blog.. here you are at 12.20AM.. putting this article..
you have chosen not to comment but I will like to put onething here. in the whole article, I agree with what he has written for Shahrukh.. noone can deny that. We can see his ego and his stardom in his eyes. Even on Panchvi pas se tej hai, he becomes sarcastic but he knows how to keep people around him.
As far as you are concerned, I wonder why people drag you in all this. You are out of any race.. thats wht I believe. some people are not part of any race. Ajay Devgan, Akshay Kumar.. urself.. even Abhishek,, no need for any designation.. work will speak. different roles.. different ideas.. not only one kind of role.
I think the writers- press journalists.. when they dont have any work or getting bored.. they must be writing such articles then.. just for sake of writing.
anyways.. I am to small a person to talk about this. But didnt you go to bed after the RED EYES?
good night sir..

Sir sorry to post this message again but by the time I posted it on your 129(i) blog was on. Please find it as below:
GOOD LUCK,
WITH LOVE
Mohan
Dear Sir,
I am big fan of yours and from past 2 housr I was reading all the posts and your replies to those posts on day 128.
I have noticed some of the fans were giving you advice to avoid commenting on media. Few of them suggested you should take criticism sportingly than justifying it. One of the fan said your tour success is speaking for itself then why you should be bothered about Mr D and others. Someone asked why Abhishek is not responding to media who is going against you for no reasons.
In some of your reply you were bit harsh as you may not like the way they said the things to you. Don’t mistake me for writing this but I think you should still think of ignoring media people than spending your valuable time commenting on them. I am with few of the above mentioned posts those who have concerns about your image.
I think many others including me are big fans of yours but do not always want to write, which delights you. Many times we point out the things, which we think may be useful to you and your health, we do the same with our parents as well. I think this should be the genuine feeling and love. If someone always writes what makes you happy then what’s the use. You must have those fans following as well who can say ‘Sir, please avoid doing this’, ‘Amitji, why you are doing this?’ etc etc.
I totally understand it’s your blog and you want to share your emotions with others and want to bring the truth in front of everyone. I respect your blog and every comment on it. But my genuine request to you, please take those fans seriously who try to point out your mistakes (in their view), those who sometime think you were rude and harsh in some of the posts. They are your genuine well wishers but trying to give you advice at their level.
Amitji, I know it’s very difficult to convince or give suggestions to someone like Big B but as true fan I always ask myself a question ‘what I would have done if you were my father?’ I would have probably adopted same way what few other fans did, talk to you in straight forward way. If you are angry with our comments then we would have accepted your anger but still would have not refrain from advising you next time.
You should spend more time on posting blogs which will give more inspiration and motivation to all the readers. I am talking about the one which you use to do on your KBC shows, those few good inspiring sayings delivered by you on start or end of the each show made my life.
Hope you will understand what I am trying to convey in my post though I wrote this post in hurry.
Take Care, Long Live Big B
Whatever way you respond to me, you will remain biggest inspiration throughout my life.
Please do reply to my post.
Regards
Mohan

Truely said in the article –
‘After all, Bachchan has taught them that there is no age for retirement in films. And with all major stars having crossed 40, it is imperative they devise ways to extend their shelf life.’

Very Interesting Mr. Bachchan. I don’t know what is the point the writer here is trying to make. Does he have a problem with anyone willing to work at an older age or does he have a problem with all the stars in general. If he’s claiming that there’s no talent left then he really needs come out of his cave and look around. Honestly i think what is being done by the stars is sometimes a little much, but in the end, they have an image to maintain and they are using the different channels available to them to maintain.
The same happens in Hollywood so i don’t know what’s the point of writing something this big, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But regardless, I appreciate your work, your blog, your commitment and professionalism.

Amitji,
I went through this piece of rubbish on HT Cafe
—
Just heard a not-so-sweet something about Abhishek Bachchan who’s been flying into the city whenever he has time off from his Unforgettable Tour.
Recently, he flew down to shoot for Drona. Gosh, it seems like we’ve been hearing about this film since we were born!
Anyway, seems Bacha B taken to his dumb-bells and bar-bells with a vengeance.. and has been working out like there is no tomorrow.
Apparently, Junior wants to look fit and furious in the action parts in the promos. Fit hai to hit hai, what? Can’t blame him since he’s sharing screen space with darling Priyanka Chopra who’s looking ooh la la la.. as his bodyguard in the fantasy adventure.
And that’s not all. We’re told the Bacha B is also involved, hands-on, in the post-production of the movie. He sits in on the editing, deciding what to snip and what to keep. We’re feeling very sorry for the director, Goldie Behl, who can’t protest since Aby is his childhood friend.
We just hope Bacha B doesn’t get insecure and snip her out of the film. Who wants to see junior masquerading as a superhero.
–
Now, I know you have been very polite and refrain from taking names, but let me address these issues head on:
1. Above is the most disgusting piece of journalism that one can ever indulge into.
2. It shows the apparent bias and agenda hidden inside it.
3. Mr Khalid Mohammed is a failed filmmaker, who is angry with everyone (more so himself). Now he wants revenge.
4. And this is his way of taking out his frustration.
5. Is it not easy to read what might be the reviews of Drona and Delli 6 (in advance).
6. The guy who made 3 of the biggest duds in the history of Indian cinema, does not have a write to abuse others.
7. Stop! Enough is enough!
8. Its very easy for people on this blog or elsewhere to advise that Mr B should ignore them or he is too big in front of them. But seriously brothers and sisters, would you keep quite if someone keeps abusing your family time and again.
9. I can understand that Mr Bachchan has always been dignified enough to let personal attacks against him go without retaliation, e.g. The outsider issue, the farm issue and many more. But its very natural and obvious of him to not stand anything wrong against his family.
10. Its a very commendable stand that he has taken. And I am sure most are supporting him in this.
11. In the end, Mr Bachchan, who the hell are these journalists?? Nothing. Do the millions of us care about them? No. What we care about, is YOU. And that love and respect is never gonna diminish. You have done too much in your life to deserve at least that.
12. Were you not the biggest Superstar we have ever had, despite the continuously negative media throughout your career. I am sure Junior B will also get his rewards despite this kind of negativity.
But yes, you have the right to fight and in this fight we are with you.

I am soooo glad you noticed it… this mild !! but am happy you gave rebuttal… we need more of these.. they must know what it feels like to be on the other side of the fence

Seems like i’m going to be one of the first few to post on this blog today, but have nothing meaningful to write.
Was hoping you would have posted a reply to my post on day 128 as you did read all of the posts, but my effort was in vain. (the bit where I asked if you would be making any other public appearances in England - public appearances for your fans)

Just remembered something,
On the blog, there is usually a caption/quote just below your picture, like the one on this page - does it have to be in hindi ? Not all of us can read hindi - it would be nice to be able to read what is written.
Was watching Lawaris on Sony Max - on an extra shot they said how Mrs Bachan did not like it when she first saw you in a sari shooting for the song ‘Jis ki biwi choti’ and she was angry with you - is that true ?
Some interesting incidents like that from your life would be a treat if you could include them now and then in you blogs.
Love & Regards.

Aah .. u r not commenting .. Let me do the honors on this one:
The author says: (1) “Letting their ‘work’ speak for themselves, obviously, does not fit into this scheme of things.”
The author has a very narrow view of ‘work’. The promotions, tours, meet and greet, etc are part of the work of an artise and the author has forgotten that a work of art has to be ‘made known’ for people to go to it.
Author confuses ‘work’ to be only doing it and sit back and relax. This is never true, even a work of science never speaks of itself unless published and advertised. Yes, even the nerdiest scientific work has to be submitted for conferences and journals of the field and accepted to be published. Yes, I had to get up, travel and talk about my work for the community to take a note of me. Publishing and talking about your work has always been part of any serious endeavour. The same is true for software that I have been part of: we had to advertise every feature that we add to be ‘made known’ to the consumers. Advertising and making your work known IS and WILL BE part of the work. For work of science by publication in major conferences and for software to be released for consumers, or for a piece of art … it ought to be made known!!
(2) “Blog wars: The ultimate free-for-all space for every self-obsessed star to brag and abuse, rave and rant, crib and curse”
Firstly, it seems the author reads a blog only if it is abusive or is filled of curses. I am not sure why would anyone NOT read any other kind of blog. The author forgot to read the best blog ever: you blog on your mother, or even the blogs about the concert or innumerable blogs that are mostly positive .. or even my little insignificant blog http://saurabhaditya.blogspot.com
Aah .. there are so many good blogs and I pity the author of having missed so much … catch up dear!
Secondly, a blog is by definition personal. Thus, I think “self-obsessed” has to do with the definition of a blog, while the author is accusing blog writers of beeing narcissistic to write their own blog! Of course a blog is an expression of the blog writer’s thoughts, it is about his/her self, experiences .. and everything personal.
(3) “Bachchan has taught them that there is no age for retirement in films”
I remember Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, RajKumar, A.K. Hangal … and innumerable others working until they could … there has never been any age for retirement in films. It is the love of work that keeps you going and not that you are ‘taught by’ anybody. At least in the country I live in, there is no age for retirement in any profession. I can choose to keep working as I wish. The same is true as I see in the Hindi movie industry. I don’t think any artist is naive to have learnt this only by Mr Bachan’s example.
By the way Amitji, what happened to the concert in Germany? On the website it doesn’t say anything after London, Wasn’t there something in Germany and/or Netherlands and then in India too!!

Hello,
So off to Paris, extending the holidays…great idea. I guess you must be looking forward to going home and finally your own bed, your own pillow. Doesn’t matter where you go but home is always home.
I watched the IIFA awards last night online.
1. WOW what a performance by Akshay, awesome entertainer, why the dedication of the performance to Abhishek? Just because or was there something special? I wish I could have been there live.
2. I had not been a fan of Ritesh (only saw hey baby) but what a strong performance at the awards. He is very talented. Great jokes!
3. I thought that this year Abhishek was a shoo-in for best male but I was so dumb-founded when he did not win. I am not saying this merely because I am a huge fan of yours but he truly deserved to win. I had seen Chak De India and although Sharukh’s performance was strong, Abhishek’s was stronger. Sometimes, I think that people are afraid to vote for the one who truly deserves it and just vote for the one that they are comfortable with. I was so mad!
Hello to Jaya Auntie, Abhishek and Aishwaryia. Enjoy the family time.

I think the friend from South africa is so right about whats the film industry is about and whats going on.. Its a race to be No 1. but i feel Amitabh Uncle already won the race some 30 years ago and nobody can ever beat him and like Akshay said He is the KING..
But said that i also feel all the actors like Abhishek, Shahrukh, Salman, Aamir, Hrithik, Ranbir, Akshay and all the beautiful ladies are doing well and working very hard and one of them might be somewhere close to where Amit Uncle is..But right now he is the best and unforgetable..
Love you always

Dear sir,
after reading this article i do not like to comment too.
Everyone has their own opinion. But this leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
This man seems to be cynical and wants to make mince meat of the stars.commenting on this only starts giving him too much importance to his opinion. Let him enjoy seeing negativity and blowing it up.
However much clarification you give won’t change him. Nobody changes easily.
If i were you i would just ignore his comments.
Life is beautiful inspite of all this negativity. Let’s ENJOY !!!!!!!!!!

I do not think writing in one’s blog is an act of being self-obsessed. It is a private space. The owner is allowed to say or do whatever they want.
In your case it also creates a platform where we can be closer to you. I would rather disagree with you and being told off by you than not having this blog to communicate with you at all.
Thus please keep blogging and rock on. About other issues in this article I have no comment too. No matter what they say I will believe you only.

I have just read the article and I am amazed anybody could make such a suggestion after being in your company. Why is it whenever a person does a good deed, others seem make a mockery of it. Hindustan according to my late grandfather, bless him, was a most beautiful country, is it not the same type of hypocrites that divided Hindustan that now have nothing better to do than to try and divide once again, these are the same hypocrites who accused Mother Teresa , if anybody does good the first to attack seem to be our countrymen. Do not let these b******s get you down. And to finish on a brighter note I would like to thank you for your time and for making my little brothers day. It means a great deal to me. Thank you

Hello Mr Bachchan,
i really dont know how to begin, but here goes, the london show was fantastic, extremely thilling, exciting, emotional and very special. i was in b1 row e with my mum we both sat in awe and excitement throughout the whole show.
i thought everyone performed to perfection, nothing could have gone better! it was brilliant when abhishek came through the audience on that basket from the roof - it was trully amazing, something i’ll never forget! Aishwarya and Abhishek, and you and your lovely wife were extremely magical performing together. i thought hritesh was charming and cheeky, shilpa was wonderful, a very sizzling perfomance, britain will always have a special part for her! and of course all of you! preity danced and looked looked exquisite. i loved vishal & shaker, they really got us up off our seats!
i cried when you talked about your mother, you were incredibly brave and humble to share that moment. i cannot begin to understand how you must feel, i can only hope that with time your pain will heal and the memory of your mother and the knowledge that she will never leave you will keep you strong and give you the ability to be the person you are!
an amazing show supporting an important and significant cause!
i wish you all the best for the rest of your tour! thank you so much for letting us be a part of your lives for one truly unforgettable night!

“When a man falls and rises again, a hero is born. When a hero falls and rises again, a legend is born. When a legend falls and rises again, Amitabh Bachchan is born.”
You were, you are and you will always remain a legend irrespective of what is written about you in the media. This blog gives an insight into your life. It gives an opportunity for me to imbibe your values, your conduct, your approach to life. I wonder if I ever reached your level in life, would I be able to conduct my life with the same modesty, same humbleness and same work ethics. It is very difficult to say yes and that is why you are a legend. I learn so much from your blog and visit it every day. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the blog.

For us you are epitome of Acting. We touched your feet just with elderly respects and to get your blessings but I don’t think I got ur blessings ;). I promise you are still hottest persona for me and touching feet was just a gesture which we do for all our elders.

Day 129 Response:
Dear Amitji,
The more negative we read the more negative our thought process gets. Might be much much easier for us to say then to even get a trickle of the scrutiny and falsified propoganda that you face. But we should remember Gandhiji on this.
Just ponder(not metaphorically but intrinsically) about the greatness of his vision. To decimate the grip of a ruling empire without bloodhsed. Now you in my opinion (and much in disagreement to your blushing self) are in line to a similar greatness arguably. You will be recognized as one of the top icons of India in the 20th century (amongst the league of Gandhiji, Lata Mangeshkar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Dhirubhai Ambani, JRD Tata, etc). All completely brilliant people from completely different fields - but making an era changing impact in their respective fields.
Now to where I am going with this. Negativity fosters negativity. Your recognition of the bias against you and repeated angst shown against the media will just cause more papershed(read as bloodshed - little humor). There is an old saying that one should never fight a PIG. because when you fight a pig both the parties get stinking dirty - but the Pig is actually enjoying it!!!! So my point is - lets talk about the remaining beautiful things surrounding you - that can blissfully make the most positive difference in our lives instead of wasting more time with these b@$@$$#$#…..
Sorry had to let it out in the end. And that how you feel or more. But you need to have patience and that is what differentiates your greatness from us…. No seriously - think about it please.
Sincere Love and Regards,
Dhiraj

Salaam Alaikum,
I posted the following earlier as well but I’m assuming with so many to read, you didnt get to my entry. Anyways, here is another attempt.
I’ve been reading Ghalib lately and at the age of 24 this is my second attempt at comprehending his poetry. I read Ghalib in school when I was 16 yrs of age. As you can imagine, his aashaar went over my head! This is not to say that I’m having better luck this time but with a little more experience in life I’m beginning to understand Gahlib’s philosophy on life.
I want to know if you have read/heard Ghalib’s poetry in detail? If so, what do you make of it?
Poetry, such as what I quote below, is a good way of introspecting one’s life to have a better chance of not regretting one’s actions in retrospect. What do you think Sir?
Regards,
Yasir Khan.

Dear Mr. Bachhan,
Why no to comments?? It is well written article bringing out the realities of STAR and STARDOM.
Your opinion in the matter would have much been appreciated.

Dear Amitji,
I refer to the quote “And with all major stars having crossed 40, it is imperative they devise ways to extend their shelf life.”
Trust me, you will never need ways to ‘extend your shelf life’ - Why can’t the media just let you live in peace? I can’t believe the author has written that blogs are created just to sustain star power!. I’m glad you are not going to comment on this article - although your response would be interesting!
No wonder Mr.Bachchan will not comment on this article for how can you refute the bare truth?
Mr.Bose has written a succinct and balanced article telling us what we all know or at least suspect - the ‘Superstars’ of Bollywood are mediocre, petty individuals who are sustained by hype and market forces that have little to do with the quality of their work. One feels sorry for the public that obsesses over these Stars who are chasing money, power and adulation. Bollywood stars complain about the media intrusion into their lives for it is the media that exposes their flaws and general stupidity. The quality of media is also similar to the quality of its subject - mediocre. A very deserving marriage of banality and vacuousness.

Interesting and true for the most part. Probably a close an analysis that one has ever made on ’stars’ and ’stardum’ if this can be called that.
hope you are doing good

Dear AB,
I read this piece of crap and share your frustration & anger !!
As you can notice it is a nameless article and that nameless coward of an author tries to impart it a sense of intellectualism by quoting Derek Bose (Whoever that maybe). I do understand what you will feel if you read such absolute nonsense !!
I would like to reassure you by quoting an interview I saw of a “real” intellect called Javed Akhtar. I think the topic under discussion was terrorism and he was asked to comment on perceived patronage of some terrorists, of a particular religion, by politicians due to vote bank poiltics. Javed said ( and I admit it was such an insightful comment) ” This kind of behaviour, if true, as well this kind of questioning undermines the intelligence of the voter. First it insinuates that a common muslim would want a terrorist to be saved and would vote for someone who tries to save a terrorist. It also undermines the intelligence of a Hindu voter that they would want someone killed because of his muslim religion. Whoever thinks this way does not really understand that the common man on the street, the common Indian is more intelligent that what he is given credit for ” ( Maynot be his exact words but his exact import I am sure).
Dear AB, I would like to reassure you that the average Indian is way more intelligent than what these tabloids give them credit for. If the tabloids think that we can believe or be swayed by what appears in gossip pages, they are mistaken. There might be some comments here & there who base their thoughts on such things that appear in those papers…..but that is because they get some perverse delight in undermining icons. It gives them a sense of false accomplishment at having brought down a icon from pedestal to their own level. It makes them believe in their own elevated level. In their heart though, even they dont believe such gossip.
That is why a few of us fans feel that you being where you are, react to such trash, you would infact be playing into the hands of such nameless cowards. However, none of us can feel your pain on reading such articles. Afterall you are the subject. So go on, do what you feel is right….and we are with you. But if it helps, know that an average reader does not get effected by such gossip mags written by anonymous jerks !!! ( Is the word allowed? It is upto you. I would prefer stronger words :P:P )
:)
Love as always.

Bits of truth out there in that article. Anonymity is a scary prospect for most celebrities.
But is your blog ‘a well thought out strategy for sustaining star power’?? I should like to think not. After all how many of our film going public are literate, forget net savvy? And how many understand English? And is there any indication that a person who reads your blog will be a fan forever?
I think, like all writers, you suffer from the itch! You write, because you must! And it is a thankful coincidence that you write extremely well. I can imagine other stars getting on to the blog bandwagon. But if it makes dreary copy or shows up with lousy linguistics, I certainly wouldn’t bother returning a second time. And it isn’t essential that someone who glitters on celluloid would come across as articulate in print too.
Moral of the story: Do what you want to. Go where your heart tells you to. Success or failure, stardom or anonymity simply are manifestations of your destiny. If it is in store for you, they will come. Simply immerse yourself in your job- 100%
Love

Mr. B,
sorry you have had it so rough with the media. Really saddened that you harbour a great deal of bitterness for what they made you and your family go through. Do hope that they do not bring so much negativity in your life, your writings (which are always otherwise so inspiring, thoughtful and compassionate, except when you seem to mention the media) and your thought process. But you are a great deal older and much much wiser than me and probably don’t need my two cents.

it does not bother me what our actors do inorder to get more money and publicity as long as they entertain us. What I like to comment on is a completely different matter.I came to watch your O2 arena show and I must admit I was blown away by your performance, I think you are far more convincing as a live performer. I was not planning on going for the show, just happened to be there, ended up spending over £100 to watch you guys perform on a big screens as it was impossible to see anybody from that far. Had abhishek not made that grand entry we would have gone home not seeing anyboby upclose, kudos! to him.I wish everybody else had also done something like that as its not fair to spend so much money to watch a screen. Another comment I would like to make is about what you go on about global warming and how each one of us should do our bit to save energy. What is the point of us saving energy so that you stars can come in on tours and waste so much energy in one night, not to forget your carbon foot prints when you go on world tour. I just find the whole thing hypocritical. It is no doubt a very serious issue but somehow loses its weight when endorsed at high energy packed startours. Nevertheless I enjoyed your performance, singing and those amazing poems. I am not a big fan of your recent films but if you come to uk to do a play I will definitely come and watch you.
cheers and no hard feelings!

I kind of disagree with Derek’s general view ,I think since movie making is officially now an “industry”(i guess they did this few years back),they have every right to market their product and surely it’s a symbiotic relationship that the tv shows get more viewership for celebrity shows and the other way around.I think the only double standard I tend to dislike about Indian movie industry(or Bollywood:))is that while it tries to discourage piracy,on the other hand the artistic piracy goes on(movie scripts, music, dance, poster design etc..).I hope the “fraternity” solves this issue on their side before giving people a bane about watching movies on pirated videos, websites etc.

Amit,
Watched “God Tussi Great Ho”. Your brief role in the movie is nice at best, however the movie itself is a rather poor adaptation of “Bruce Almighty”.
I still wonder why you take exception to people referring to the Hindi Film Industry as Bollywood, when many of your own movies are poor caricature-like adaptations, unabashedly and unapologetically “inspired” by out-dated Hollywood Movies.

Very truthful and wonderful and a well written one.. All said in one flow nothing left. It is the survival of the fittest. Nobody wants to leave their place. Why should they? They want to sit there comfortably for ever! Let them! You have to create your own space. Now it seems there is lot of space at the top! They are entertainers! Public wants entertainment! Whether it is on screen or off screen, it hardly matters!—jaya

Well Amitji I would have to agree that the London concert must have been the most amazing. I myself am born and brought up in London. I went to see your Jumma Chumma Concert too. I live in San Francisco now and loved your concert here. But there is something about the atmosphere in the London venues. I miss it too much. Well this part of your journey comes to an end. Another journey will begin for you no doubt. Keep going as long as you can. We have been given this life by god to do such wonderful things, to make a difference, and I am so sure you make a difference in so many people lives. Continue with your good work, may you accomplish more, and I pray your family and you are kept safe always. God Bless You Always. I hope some day I will recieve a reply from you. Will wait patiently. All these months I have been thinking exactly this way and there comes Derek and snatches away my words and puts into ink.

In Mr. Bachchan’s case: it is also his rather old age that is likely to enhance his fear (at a conscious or subconscious level) for fading stardom.

Dear Mr. Bachchan,
The media is floundering, clutching at straws now that the blog has pulled the rug out from beneath their feet and given you a level playing field. Way to go Mr. Bachchan…!
Defending your name, clearing the air, putting facts in order… you certainly have a right to do that.
Glad to see that you’re relaxing and enjoying now that the first leg of the tour is done. Have a wonderful time. There must be very few places that you can enjoy the ordinary comforts of walking the streets, exploring a new place, having a relaxed meal etc. without being mobbed.
We fellow bloggers will understand if you cannot spend much time blogging and replying to comments while you’re taking a break or otherwise occupied. I’m sure your family wish to spend time with you as well, so no more eyedrops… do rest and sleep well.
Loved the way you candidly described your emotions and feelings before going onstage.
Warm Regards

“Blog wars: The ultimate free-for-all space for every self-obsessed star to brag and abuse, rave and rant, crib and curse…”
Sounds to me, AB, like a man who is trying to get some attention of his own by writing sensationalist dribble about a medium that has attracted thousands of readers that he “wished” he had.
It’s nothing new in the “modern” version of the global media. If a subject, or a person, or a blog, or a movie becomes successful and attracts viewers, there will always be those that choose to denigrate that success or the judgement of the viewer that gives the success, as a means to attract attention of there own.
Its irrelevant to them if they agree with the views that they have expressed, so long as it is the opposing view of the mass and sensationalised in its form to attract anger and opinion which in turn equals to readership.
It happens a lot, and I applaud you for choosing to fight against a man or woman that “chooses” to defame you and your family for their own monetary benefit via popular media.

Hi Amit Uncle,
Hmmm…I’m not really sure WHAT to say??? Who IS this guy??? This paragraph sounds like he’s been talking to the infamous Parag and Priya Gandhi…I guess they never made it to London to see you eh?
I’m not angry about what Mr. Bose wrote, as everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it seems that he has done some of his research utilizing your blog.
I never thought the purpose of the sunglasses were to “hide”. I thought it was worn to see through the flashes of flashbulbs, bright lights…and well…ohhh I don’t know…THE SUN??!?!??
I don’t recall, at anytime, you stating or implying that you do not enjoy the adulation and fans coming up to you. In fact, you’ve been very honest in saying that you LOVE it!! So, why give the perception that only Shah Rukh bhaiyya is interested in and cares for his fans…If this “reporter” wants to talk about that, why didn’t he mention Shah Rukh bhaiyya’s closed website…SRKWorld??? It’s been “under construction” for 7 years…
Speaking of websites, Mr. Bose talks about “Blog wars”. There are no blog wars….Your blog is the best!! And I’m not just saying that…Amit Uncle, you take the time to chat with us, share your stories, emotion…share YOU!! You treat us like family. You are interested in what we have to say and encourage us to share our thoughts, good or bad. You do not censor us or restrict us from saying what we feel. No other celebrity blog does that. Your blog is for you as much as it is for us, because you care about us and we feel that everyday. You read every single comment that is made and reply to many of them. If Mr. Bose only read some of the comments that you receive, especially when you have not posted for a day or are really late in posting…everyone of us start writing, “Amit Uncle are you okay? I hope you are well? Take your rest and do post when you have time.”
Why does Mr. Bose suggest that celebrities do not let, “their work speak for themselves”? And, why suggest that putting on shows and “dancing at weddings” and meet and greets is to make money??? Amit Uncle, you said it here, you don’t know about any money paid by fans for the meet and greet. This is organized by the promoters. Doesn’t he realize that the shows are put on for the fans?? Yes, stars must be paid for their appearance, however, how much would you really earn? There are many expenses that have to be paid…airfare, hotel, car travel for all participants. What about the months of rehearsals, learning new routines, skits, organizing which locations to travel to ? Mr. Bose should check himself because it seems that he is very one-sided and refuses to see the good in people. He gives the reader the perception that everything that a celebrity does has alterior motives…money. Money doesn’t make the world go around…Love does.
Much Love and Admiration
PB

“Letting their work speak for themselves, obviously, does not fit into this scheme of things.”….. so very true… I dont know what you think about this article, but its a good one…. I dont care about others mentioned in this article but wish at least you would let your work speak rather than fighting with media and promoting your family and tour… Its very sad to see you promote bad movies like Sarkar Raj when truth is it was outright rejected… Its very sad to see you trying to prove that yout tour is a success by posting photographs of crowd… There is only one reason why somebody does it.. INSECURITY!
Truth is there are still a lot of people who love you and your family…but the number is waning…. because you make mockery of their love by doing movies like aag, bhootnath, jhoom barabar jhoom, babul, lcmd, sarkar raj, drona and so on… you make mockery of their love by making illegal land acquisitions and you dont have balls to discuss that issue on your blog because you know you are in the wrong (even though you say “matter is in the court, I would not comment”)…
Instead of doing blatant self promotion thru this blog, make truly good movies so that viewers faith in you returns… After all they are interested in you only because you are an ACTOR… You used to that job very well but now-a-days it seems like your secondary profession.
Still your fan !
(has been waiting forever for a great movie from you)
