I did an interview on my email service for Diganta from the Hindustan Times, Kolkata. Before sending it off to him I ran it through the family. I have always insisted on this procedure. All of us being in the same bracket it is wise to let the others know what comments have been made, in order that there is similarity in our responses with regard to facts and also to make them aware of a particular stand that may have been taken.
Vishal, the music director and part of our cast for the Concert, happened to be in the room as I read out my response and noticing the sarcasm and sting in my remarks, joked that he felt after this interview the journalist would be asked to quit his job by the paper.
This evening I got a message from Diganta that he had printed my interview and that he had ‘quit his job’ !
That was weird !!
We are all looking for Vishal the soothsayer desperately, to catch what he could predict next.
Diganta came back to me to say he had voluntarily quit on his own accord and that he was grateful to me for all that I had done to support his career. On several occasions when he had needed to interact with me I had extended cooperation.

My questions:
- The Last Lear is true literary work in the sense that it is a take on Utpal Dutt’s play Aajker Shah Jahan..what is the first thing that struck you in the script?
ANS//
The script came later. It was the joy of working with Ritu first. We had been contemplating for a long time to work together and finally it happened. The script was challenging. It was to be shot in English, something I had not done since my days of theatre in Kolkatta. It involved a stage artist in a film in a film. And I loved the way Ritu was treating it. The fact that it was an adaptation of Utpal Da’s work was an added attraction. Utpal Da and I shared a very warm relationship; he being in my very first film. No not Saat Hindustani, Mrinal Da’s ‘Bhuvan Shome’, where I gave my voice.
2. How difficult is it to adapt a play for screen?ANS//
This is something you should ask Ritu. He wrote it and wrote it well. Some considerations for cinema have to be incorporated for an adaptation and I believe that was done quite well.
3. Going through the synopsis, I believe it is a high emotionally charged role..your take..ANS//
I do not know what you mean by that. It is an interesting character and yes it has its moments. I guess any interesting character would envelope such ingredients.
4. Have you seen the play Sir?ANS//
No.
5. Sir tell me honestly aren’t the roles that you are getting over the last few years more and more difficult an challenging then the ones you played beefore…Now I am simply talking in terms of the depth factor and the audience that you are catering to…ANS//
Yes they are.
6. We get to see Preity Zinta and Arjun Rampal in The Last Lear…two actors of the mainstream genre…how did they shape up?ANS//
They have both shaped up rather well. They are consummate artists and given an opportunity have always delivered. In this film they have lived up to the expectations of the role assigned to them.
7. Now on a different note, the million-dollar question is Is The Unforgettable Tour a big success?ANS//
Why would you want to put a million dollars on a question that has been decimated and devalued to a most predictable category !! Questioning and demeaning the viability of any of our achievements has been the media mantra for decades. The fact that we have been disproving that time and again is pertinent justification in giving your query no value at all. However, my generosity coerces me to condescendingly inform you that the Unforgettable Tour has been an unimaginable and massive success. The final stamp for which has been the show on the 24th August at the O2 Arena, the most prestigious venue of London, from where we have just received formal information and acclaim that this is only the 3rd time in the history of the venue that they have had a packed sold out event. The other 2 being for Madonna and the rock band U2. So a first for an Indian event. This of course is in addition to every other venue we performed in - the USA, Canada and Trinidad - to sold out stadiums. The reactions from the audiences have been phenomenal and singular – “they had never ever seen a show like this, and perhaps never will” !! Proud to have achieved that on foreign soil. And very proud to be an Indian.
8. You fell ill during the course of the trip…is the load taking its toll now Sir?ANS//
Yes I did. But am fine now.
9. Abhishek has quite a number of releases this year…how would you analyse his growth as an actor?ANS//
Yes. As an actor he has been challenged with diverse roles and has come through with flying colours. The fact that the media continuously derides and denies him his due, signifies the ruthless bias it has against him and indeed our family. That not withstanding I feel he works with dedication and I see him bringing improvement to his craft with each progressing day. That is healthy.
10. Last but not the least..at 66, he is still happening…what next?ANS//
Who is the ‘he’ you question ? I am 66 and if you are referring to me then I would like to know what you mean by ‘happening’ ? If it means that I am still alive then yes I am still obviously alive. If it means that I am am still happening in films, then yes I do have work in some films yet. ‘Happening’ could obviously not be a referral to success, because you have decided to deny that to us. So it does not really matter ‘what is next’ in your eyes. And quite frankly, we couldn’t care. That’s the least I could do in the situation !!

I have just walked through Hyde Park in the deep night from across Park Lane. Sublime.
The weather temperate and the breeze gentle and refreshing. The odd couple on a dark bench, idling. Kids still playing football in nearby grass stretches. But so peaceful and quiet.
Walked in front of the Palace and admired its grandeur and thought about its history and the events that have lived with us through years courtesy the information medium.
My father, when he was studying for his doctorate in Cambridge had been invited to tea at the Buckingham Palace, 1953 - 54, when there was a celebration to welcome the Indian Cricket team, on tour of England. Many souvenirs had been sent by him of that evening along with autographs of prominent members of the team - greats like Vinoo Mankad and Vijay Hazare, to me. I had become the most important person in my School in Allahabad soon after, as I showed off my valued possessions. They must be stored in a neat little corner by my Mother.
Strange that I mention Vishal and my School in Allahabad today !
Vishal’s father-in-law, came to the show at the O2 in London on the 24th. Came back stage to shake hands and get some pictures done. He was from Boys’ High School, Allahabad. My school. And he reminds me of the times when as a senior he would give orders to me and others. Round us up for get together’s and the like. It is a small world. And strange !!

I cant believe the media/ Journalists sometimes.. They ask rude questions. I read an article on msn.co.in about you today which i did not like very much. I think it was very rude.. If you get a chance do read it. I think you are more than Happening in the Indian cinema and nobody can do what you do at 66..A world tour when u were not feeling good. Your show was soooooo amazing, huge success and everybody is jealous. Like i said earlier every good thing has to have something negative to it.. I admire you so much.. We all are so blessed that you are a part of Indian cinema. A truly versatile actor, writer, singer, so good looking, and above all you have a beautiful heart. I can go on and on about u….

I think all the journalists not only share 1 brain (which doesn’t work by the way), but they are all blind also. There are pictures all over (including your blog) of the venues being packed to the highest level with fans standing, cheering, applauding, etc. Yet still they have the audacity to question the success of this tour. Anyway, don’t listen to them because nobody can deny the facts. And the fact is that every tour you have done and will do will be successful and sold out because you are the best!!

Anyways, While I was reading this entry the song Ishq Bina (from Taal) came on the radio and I couldn’t help but say that I truely love Aishwarya! The first time I saw her movie was Aa Ab Laut Chale, one of my favorite movies, and I instantly feel in love with her.
Then, I happened to be in India when the blockbusters Hum Dil De Chuke Sanaam and Taal came out. Boy oh boy was Aishwarya amazing. She truely made a place in everyone’s heart.
I remember seeing her live the first time at the Zee Gold Bollywood Awards in 2000, where she danced to a song from Taal and HDDCS. It was like a dream come true seeing her live back then. That time I was about 10, and we were sitting so far that I had binoculars. But, the experience of seeing her live was truly phenominal.
After 8 years, and so many blockbuster movies (Devdas=being my absolute favorite), Aishwarya is irrefutably the greatest actress in Indian Cinema.
And, I sincerely cannot tell you how astonishing it was to see her perform at the Atlantic City-Unforgettable Show. This time I was really close so no need for binoculars. HaHA.
I just wanted to wish Aishwarya years and years and years of joy and happiness. May she go even further in life. Today she is not only an Indian superstar, but an International superstar. God Bless her.
You would make my day, week, even month, if somehow you were able to show this message to her; and get maybe a hi? haha.

Good you mentioned about the Indian Cricket team of the 50s.It was Don Bradman’s birth centenary today. I’ve always thought of you as the Bradman of Indian cinema.
I think what you have achieved in your career is of Bradmanesque proportions. You both have been so humble despite being such huge superstars in respective fields.

From the past 2 months I’ve been away from my family and while I travelled I made sure that I carry DVDs of your movies. Deewar, Don, AgniPath, Jurmana, Black…well the list goes on.
one more reason for my wife to complain that I don’t carry her picture but i took your movies…All I can tell her is thats what Mr. Bachchan means to me.
To add to her My kid who’s 4 years admires you and refers Abhishek as Bunty. Ofcourse Bunty aur Babli was the first movie she watched in the theatre.

It is indeed weird that Vishal happened to be in the room as you were reading and responding to the questions and that he predicted Diganta would be asked to quit his job. Diganta tells you he would like to talk about your upcoming film, “The Last Lear” and then he comes up with questions about the Unforgettable Tour, Abhishek and “you”, which doesn’t make any sense to me. I don’t understand why these reporters use one subject to get to another but then again this is the way most journalists work and that can’t be changed. I absolutely love your sarcasm in the responses. The last question he asked and your response to it, reminded me of the Unforgettable Tour Press Conference in NY that took place last August during the weekend in which you were here for your recital of Madhushala. I was at the press conference with Anoli Patel and I remember she had asked you a great question about global warming, which you were happy to respond to. There were others at the press conference who were completely unaware of what the conference had to do with and asked questions that made no sense. I don’t remember the exact question but one guy had addressed his question as “YOU”. You sarcastically responded with something along these lines… I won’t directly quote you because I don’t remember your exact words but basically you said… you who? me? or Abhishek (pointing to him) and the guy responded with… “Bachchan” and once again you responded with Bachchan who? me or him… then the guy asked a completely irrelevant question without even responding to whether he was addressing you or Abhishek… you backed into your seat and passed the mic to Aishwarya and then she passed it to Abhishek and then he addressed the guy and it was a really funny moment. The guy must’ve felt embarrassed after it was over. I’m not sure if you remember that, but after reading your post, I remembered that moment and got a kick out of it. I was very impressed with the way you responded to each question and how you can respond with such grace and intelligence to one person and then do a complete 360 and be really sarcastic to another based on the questions asked and the means of asking them. I noticed the same in your responses to Diganta’s questions and I commend you for that.
In your post, you mention the name Vijay Hazare when talking about your father and the welcoming of the India Cricket team at Buckingham Palace. The other night, I watched Shahenshah on Sony TV and the following day I watched Kaalia on ITV and then I was in the mood to watch some of your dialogues so I watched a dvd I own called “Main Hoom Amitabh Vol. 1 - Songs, Scenes & Dialogs” and your infamous dialogue from Namak Halal was on that dvd and reading Vijay Hazare’s name, it reminded me of that dialogue. I just wanted to tell you that your films and your dialogs will never get played out. Each and every time I watch a film or scene, I am more impressed by your talent and I just want to thank you for making life that much more enjoyable. I am hoping that there will be a dvd for the Unforgettable Tour and I am looking forward to your watching your dialogs from Agneepath & Deewar for many years to come.

given the media ‘misprints’ and maligning that you have had to endure so often, I believe you may relate to the following piece that I came across:
A lion somehow gets loose in a zoo and is ready to pounce on a person. Amazingly, a man on a harley-davidson vrooms upto the lion, kicking and scaring it away. A media person observes all this and furiously takes notes. The next mornings’ headlines read: BIKER GANG MEMBER ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH!

Wonder what prompted him to quit ? I really feel that you read far too much into those questions. If they are asking you questions which you suspect is sarcastic.. I would refrain from answering those questions or reply back with as a matter of fact answer… rather than with an attitude of rubbing it in.. Thats just my opinion as an observer and I realize I’m not living your life..

With all due and full respect for your generally polite approach towards others and their feelings, I see you have been today very uncharacteristically nasty and rude towards Diganta. I see none of his questions demanding the nasty answers you gave to some of his questions.
Please do not treat everyone in media as ’sab ghode baara takke’. I am sure you would appreciate that each industry has its faces - good and evil, as does the media and as does the film industry as well. One just needs to diligently differentiate between the two faces.

I always like your responses to the interviews. Yes this sarcastic tone in the answers is remarkable and appropriate for such provocative questions.
i like your answers regarding the unforgettable tour question. Actually one wonders, Indian media should be the first to celebrate and rejoice the success of the tour. It is an Indian event around the world, an event which promotes for Indian art and culture worldwide and helps in spreading the Indian spirit. their attitude and bias is incomprehensible and perplexing for me.
But we are all happy for your success Mr. Bachchan, actually their false behaviour has been proven with every word they write. No one trusts what they say or what they try to propagate about you or your family. They loose in this contest. Your success and achievement talks about itself, it doesn’t need the mention by false and unauthentic media.

Was at th 02 arena to watch a fabulous show. You were simply amazing. It was the best ever concert I have ever been to. We were looking forward to you performing the Jiska Biwi Song from Lawaaris. That is a classic and we were so disapointed that was not incorprated into the show. Was it the promoters that dictate what content will be included?
Any plans for a sequel - Unforgettable 2 ? How long are you in London for Sir?

With great respect to media,I believe the only actor to look forward to even today is yourself enacting different challanging roles,and I am saying this not just as your fan but also as a keen film watcher in Canada.
Abhishek is definitely someone I admire as an actor although like evryone else he does not form a part of all contravercies that others do and for which I think the media does not allways put him in limelight.

Write about how you see the other hindi movies or movies from other languages? Do you see and compare or just enjoy ? One thing i like about hollywood is the varity of the subjects. Just a quick note …my husband also went to Boys High School in Allahabad while u were there . Last year while visitng India he took me to visit his Alma Mater. We saw a picture of u in one of their rooms , where they have portraits of all the distinguished students who studied there. Have a safe trip back to India and i thoroughly enjoyed your show in San Francisco .

It’s great to hear a bit about The Last Lear! I missed it at the Toronto Filmfest last year, and have been waiting patiently for it ever since.
Could you give us an update on future projects? Is Shoebite still in progress? (I was an extra in the bookshop one day so I am quite excited to see this film, haha.)
Also - what’s the status on Shantaram? Any truth to the rumor that filming starts in September?

Great interview. I had read it also earlier on the HT website. I thought your answers were very apt in that they hit the nail on the head especially when you called out the media. I was very heartened to read how accurately you were in your comments on how the media has been totally against you and your family. It’s also so correct that Abhi is almost always attacked and maligned in the press because of the media’s harsh propaganda and biases. Abhi is a very good and versatile actor who deserves his due in the industry. It is more than obvious that the media always tries to tarnish everything you and your family are involved in. It’s a bizarre obsession the media has with trying to bring down your family at every turn.
The media also seems to enjoy trying to drag you and your family into controversial matters in the industry that none of you are actively involved in or have anything to do with. I hope you and your family will be on guard against the media’s manipulations in trying to use you all in this manner. Don’t allow them to exploit you and your family in this manner. This is why my opinion of the media is at an all time low. I have very little regard or respect for them. So I enjoyed all of your responses to the interview. Hopefully the reporter quit to go into a more ethical and enriching line of work. One can only hope. Mr. Bachchan, I wish you all the best of luck with the Last Lear. Also let Abhi know that the new Drona picture stills and wallpapers are very cool.

I have been following up your blog since its started and always wanted to write to you. I guess I dont have anything special to say to you which you have not heard before. Well, I consider myself to be one of your biggest fans. Infact, my son who is 2 & 1/2 year old is even a bigger fan then me. He must have watched your song in JBJ atleast 500 times. Only way we can feed him is to put the JBJ song on DVD and he will have his milk, BF, lunch, dinner without any problem.
I stay in Australia and I am not sure if you are coming to Australia with unforgetable tour. I am hoping that you do.
I actually came to see you in Zee Cine Awards which were held in Dubai in 2004. Could not catch glimpse of you then. But I had the satisfaction of being under the same roof with you for 2-3 hours.
I happened to see your old movie “Dostana” yesterday and man you were great in the movie eating chewing gum. I think I was probably 8 years when that movie was released and I kept asking my mom that I want chewing gum to be like you.
Looking forward see you soon in The Last Lear and Alladin and also Johny Mastana (Show Bite). Would like to see you in movie directed by Aushotosh Gowarikar,Rakesh Roshan and Raju Hirnani.

Over the last few weeks it was really busy schedule for you and I hope you have some time now to relax.
I am really happy to know about the successful tour. Your health was a bit of concern for people like us. I feel (coming up an unwelcome advice) that you should avoid such long and gruelling tours. I do salute your energy level and enthusiasm but I would rather like you to use that energy in more relaxed schedule so that you can allow your body time to take care of itself. I don’t know how good is it to stretch oneself to the extent as you are doing.
Hope you and your family are keeping well and coming back soon.

Have a question for you. Not sure if you’re the best person to answer this. Is the Hanuman Chalisa version that you rendered out in the market for purchase? Lately I’ve been listening to a version sung by another artiste and find it very very soothing, inspirational, also provides me strength to carry out my daily activities etc. This along with Vishnu Sahasranama provides a lot of comfort.
Would be good to listen to your version.

Dear Mr. Bachchan,
I have read through your blogs most days. Thought of leaving a reply some days. Today I can’t resist. I write this acutely aware that you must be inundated with millions of messages like this.
The first time I saw your family - your two kids and wife Mrs. Bachchan was at the Chennai Airport’s VIP lounge was when my staff I were waiting to receive the Ambassador ( of a really pretty European country). It was my first few days on my new job and I was then a rather young diplomat. I watched your attentive and nurturing interaction with your kids - must have been in their in the early teens then- with a lot of interest and did not have the heart to interrupt your time with them.
I have been busy making choices about my career..gave up my job to be a stay home mom. Although I have enjoyed motherhood tremendously i have do pangs every now and then about letting go of what could have been a great career. My husband has always told me there still a lot of time left for me go and grab where i left off.
This morning when i was returning from my morning jog on the beach I remembered one of your dad’s quote’s - Mitti ka tan, masti ka man, kshan-bhar jivan – mera parichay. Have always loved it! And you are an example of how much one can achieve in a life time and that it is never too late. We can all leave a mark on the planet I guess. Your dad i would have interrupted!

But your responses don’t seem so harsh as to prompt him to tender his resignation from his job. From the first few lines, i had guessed you had let loose your anger on him, but you were very respectful.
It only seems to be a coincidence that the journalist resigned.

Well for the first time reading your blog honestly i didnt like the way you tried to put your thoughts in reply to the questions by the journalist. May be you have had bitter experience with the fellow, but somehow your image and honor is very high in my eyes, and to see it crumble just for a journalist who is trying to have your answers for his job seems bit overdone.
I hope I sound demeaning while writing this because no matter what you do you will have the same place in my heart which you had earlier, which over a period of years has increased manifold mainly because of the integrity and honesty which you have shown while being down and out and had come back and silenced all your critics with your work and success.
Now tell me who are the handfull of journalist to decide whether you are successfull or not.. I think they can do whatever they want to but your success or failure is definitely defined by the people who love you and your audiences who like your work and the way you carry yourself and have been carrying your self over the years.. i.e with dignity and honesty.
So while honesty is still there in your words ( and i know it will be there always with you) but dignity is being compromised when you choose to answer in a sarcastic manner and may you could have been better either avoiding it or if you have been a bit more mild in your approach. Now you may completely agree or disagree with me my thoughts but as a well wisher and someone who have been silently admiring you as a person more than actor i thought i should put it through but please be sure that these thing also doesnt dilute your position in any manner in my eyes or mind. It will always remain the way it had been over the years.
