Bharati Dubey of Times of India writes a piece in Mumbai Mirror, as reproduced above.
Bharati Dubey sent me an sms on my mobile on the 18th of August 2008 at 10:20 pm as follows :
“Hello sir,have got pics of u and jayaji on stage.heard u gave her a bangle and a ring.wanted a few comments 4 my story.bharati”
I replied back from New York as follows -
“No. They were props. Part of the act on stage.”
Bharati Dubey in the article writes -
Amitabh lovingly slipped a bangle onto his wife’s wrist, while she gifted him a ring. Then they embraced each other. Getting sentimental in old age, sir ? Says Amitabh. “No, no. The entire episode was staged and a part of the act. We used props.”
Firstly M/s Bharati you have the facts wrong. In the act on stage I put a bracelet on her hand. She does not put a ring on mine. And nowhere have I confirmed this.
Secondly, my response to your question was in reference to the part of the question, namely ‘heard you gave her a bangle and a ring’. To which I said ‘No’ it was ‘part of the act’, and that they ‘were props’.
You have convoluted mischievously by adding an additional remark in your write up, not put in the sms to me, by saying ‘Getting sentimental in old age, sir ? And then used my response, given to you in an entirely different context, into a context that you have conveniently and without my knowledge, manufactured.
So.. what comes through to the reader m/s Bharati is, that, when asked by you whether I was ‘getting sentimental in my old age’, my response was, “No, no. The entire episode was staged and a part of the act. We used props.”
What you have left in the mind of the reader is a disgusting, untruthful, completely misplaced impression; connived deliberately to inform the viewer that my sentiment towards my wife Jaya is ’staged’ and ‘part of an act’ and one where I have to make the use of ‘props’ !!
Your intention of the heading of the article has even worse implications. The title says - IT”S YESTERDAY ONCE MORE ? Question mark ! What are you implying ? That my yesterday is questionable ?
And your self manufactured comment “Getting sentimental in old age, sir ?” is deeply objectionable. You not only question my sentiment but also its veracity in ‘old age’. Do sentiments not occur or hold in old age ? Stop trying to generalize your personal beliefs for public consumption through a responsible (hopefully ?) and authorized formal public medium.
My sentiments, dear lady, are in absolute order.’Yesterday’ and in my ‘old age’ too. They do not require validation or justification. Certainly not from you.
Get married, if you are not already. Embrace your sentiment. And may you hold on to it till your old age without the use of any props ! When you get there, give me a call. If I am still around, we’ll talk !!
With love and deep sentiments -
Amitabh Bachchan

Now ,I am really happy that Jaya got what she deserved- a special moment. Seeing you both together and Jayaji given importance is really wonderful!
She has been your strength and been by your side always-
Your love and acknowledgement must be of highest value to her- I am proud of you NOW.

Dearest Mr. AB,
I just saw your movie “Aebaar” and I loved it. The manner in which you have played the character of a protective father was deeply moving…. especially, the last scene where you drop your daughter to the college and watch her…. and then wipe a tear…. I always love you as an actor and a great human being who touches the hearts and souls of billions.
God Bless-

I am not in your shoes, I think you are taking this article way too seriously. Although the writer may have twisted your words, I think it is still a positive article and most readers would view it that way. There are far worse things written about celebrities. I think the relationship between the media is that you can’t live with them or without them. As someone once said, all publicity is good publicity (or something to that effect). You are well established and it’s nice that you have your own outlet to clarify matters and give us your own viewpoint. However, lesser known celebrities crave any media attention and tend to feed into the frenzy (Paris Hilton, Britney Spears). Without the media, their careers would die. It’s a tricky relationship.

Dear Sir,
Excellent medium to get out with the true story…an extension of your previous topic…a very recent example of what you were discussing in previous entry!!
We all can see the mutual love and affection in both urs and Jayaji’s eyes and body language…that definitely cannot be staged…with or without props! Keep on the good work along with the love of ur family….we are always with you.
Waiting for your tour to come to Melb,
Till then, take care and love all.

Dear Amitji,
Excellent. I loved the way you have responded- If I would have read without your clarification, it certainly sounds what Ms Dubey wanted to portrait- which is totally disgusting and malice on her part- by trying to “edit ” your comments. This is why I like your blog- becos’ general public & especially your fans get more clear picture (even though we would take any new article with pinch of grain & salt anyway!). love.

This is what I don’t like about media is that twist the words in the way they want to present to the public.
Amitabh ji your love for your wife and kids shows thru your personality so no matter what media says your fans will always know you as a loving husband/dad/grandfather/ and above all as a loving human being.

Dear Amit Uncle,
When I read Ms. Bharati’s question “Getting sentimental in old age, sir?” I was really surprised and felt so WEIRD and extremely uncomfortable. What did she hope to gain with that kind of taunt or sarcasm or judgment? U have expressed it just the way I would feel about it inside. Whether it was all on purpose, or even something she could not help..maybe because that’s how she feels, I don’t know. It’s upsetting to realize a certain lack of sensitivity and maturity and wisdom there.
With lots of love to you,
Harshi.

Dear Mr. Bachchan,
Whoa! What a “solid” retort to Ms. Dubey! I think this happens with all celebrities, they say something and these irresponsible journalists add their own “masala” and print something else! I think if all celebrities start blogging we will get to read the “real” interviews. What one had said and what these journos have printed! Anyway methinks that the days of these journalists will soon be over. Soon we are going to hear things straight from the horse’s mouth.
Anyway ALL THE BEST TO YOUR UK SHOWS!
With lots of love,
A S Abdul Rahim.

Fantastic!!! What a reply. Got reminded of Vijay, of Deewaar. I too didn’t like the “sentimental” line in the article. That was degrading. Your reply was very apt.
On a different note, enjoyed the scene in Sarkar Raj II were you are in the hospital and son comes over. The look in your eyes. How can you emote like that? Fantastic!!!
Dear Mr Bachan
That was a good response to the article but im only wondering that why shud such an article disturb u so much. Your fans already know who you are and what is your charachter so why the need to respond to such articles? We all know that the media is capable of writing anything they feel provided it gets the attention of the public. But the people who already know you over the years will definitely not change their opinion of you and Jayaji.
I think you should just ignore the likes of Bharti Dubey!! We all know how low these journalists can stoop to accomplish their mission!

What I find absolutely silly in Bharati Dubey and some other journalists of her genre offlate is that they write entire articles based on blogs. Funnily enough they make it sounds like an actual conducted interview, when the information on the article is nothing more but verbatim blog write-ups. Guess it’s the easiest way to write these days; log on to a celebrity blog, cut-paste and the article is done:)

India is land of rich culture and people used to respect its value.Today, India media gives different image of modern India, where no respect for senior, no respect for Indian culture, even no respect for nation. I often see that one part of India media oftem try to shade negative on Mr.Bachchan, who is not only suuccessful actor but respected and dignity Indian senior citizenship which comes from good reputed family background and most importantly he is humble and good human being.Who ever you have potiential of fight against these small section of media then please respond and protect Mr.Bachachan from these evil media.Or one can form “Amitabh Bachchan media fan club”internationally and give response to all negative journalist.Because AB is India’s treasure.

Mr Bachchan,
Good Morning!
I actually did read this article on mumbai mirror online yesterday and the points you just expressed were exactly what i was thinking when reading it. It’s great that you are setting the record straight. It’s sad how journalists cannot even write a simple article without manipulating its contexts. Something so personal between you and Jaya aunty can be totally misconstrued by unjust newspapers.
As always its a pleasure to read your blogs every morning and just like the others instead of “working hard” at the office, I sit at my desk ” hardly working” waiting for your next update.

‘Yesterday’ - it certainly isn’t, and ‘old age’ - age is in the mind. And you are not old if I know anything about mindsets and attitudes!
Hitting the nail on the head!!!!!!!!! Nobody’s sentiments need any 3rd party validation or justification. Not from a journalist. Not from anybody else - unless we give them the authority (implicit + explicit) to comment.

Man - the levels to which they will stoop !
Mr. Bachchan, If I were you - I would probably not have responded to that question on sms. Why even bother - is there a point - unless you do enjoy exposing the shenanigans of these people. It is sad - that at this point - the media continues to question of one its country’s leading men ( and I don’t mean it only in cinematic terms ).
As a young ( can I call myself that at 30?
) man living in USA, your tour inspires pride. I have not attended the shows - my work schedule did not permit me to. However, to conquer foreign shores on the scale that you have , inspires pride. Was it not that spirit that brought europe all its wealth and progress in the middle ages ? Its explorers setting out to discover new lands ?
I am amazed at how much more educated the westerner is about our cinema industry. The day they stop calling it Bollywood would be the day we would have arrived. Because to me, calling it Bollywood is demeaning. Kind of like selling imitation Adidas shoes under the name Adibas. What you just did may be viewed as a pure capitalist exercise by some, but it has definitely helped the process of furthering the expanse and reach of Indian cinema and in turn, India.
Do you honestly think you can have an intellectual discussion with a person who poses a question as silly as that sms can actually grasp the depth of the ideas you explore in your blogs ? There are million more interesting questions that I can come up through the course of a workday to ask a personality who has achieved great heights like you have. And all she could ask was about a ring / garland (I dont even remember what it was and don’t care about reading the entry again to find what it was
) ?
Frankly, my answer would have been three letters - wtf ? pardon the language
Cheers !

Mr. Bachchan,
This I suppose is another act of journalistic talent(obviously missing). Your previous blog of why they act or report articles is mainly due to the gossip and there are readers who buy such magazines. This media craze is all over, anything that Britney Spears or people like her do is all over the news magazines. In India, it is more exaggeratted. The media in India writes more about the unseen and vicious only to win the popularity contest. It is a disgrace that people believe or wonder if that incident could have happened. It is totally a mind game that the media plays with the masses. There was a time, I used to read and even believe some of them, but slowly and surely I had better judgement. They write articles that work for themselves not what works for the artists. So, one does not need fortune cookies to decipher what will happen. Unfortunately, when you are on the public eye, this will only magnify their interest. I do feel bad that everything you do is misconstrued and always seen as an ulterior motive. Hats off to you though, for standing up tall. We love you and your family Mr. Bachchan. Keep it going. Good luck in London and BON VOYAGE.

I have been an avid reader of your blog and have been keeping up with it since the day you started. Its an admirable feat that you are accomplishing, considering your busy life and needs. I have never written to you before, but I am writing this firstly to thank you, as you really make me feel so very proud by wishing us Parsees for our Navroz, on August 19, 2008. Not many around the world are aware of our community and most especially of our religious celebrations. While reading your blog and scrolling down the list of responses, I have not noticed any Parsee names hence felt proud of your special mention for us, as part of your community.
You are truly admirable and someone who deserves the highest respect. I have been seeing your films since I was a child. Alike others I never knew you indepth, until you opened the doors of closeness with your blogging, for which again I am thankful. I am a lot younger than you, but reading your blog daily has taught me a lot; given me strength, smiles, tears and all the great feelings that one experiences when being in touch with someone like you from a distance. I have learned so much about humanity and felt inspired by your humbleness. I pray for your success and long life. May you forever continue to share more golden nuggets of your life experiences, as you have a treasure trove of them. I pray for your family and loved ones to be safe and happy by your side, giving you all the support and inspiration to do all that you do. I was terribly touched by your words of tribute for your mother recently and earlier about your father. They must be so proud of all they have done for you and for all that you are doing in return. Parents are always special people in ones lives, sometimes one realises it all when it could have been done so earlier. You were lucky and blessed to have been touched by so special people, as your parents. Please continue to write more about your younger days and some about your work, past and present, as they are really brilliant. Through the blog you have made a distant star come close, as it must have been like for those that initially saw the galaxy through the telescope. It is not just seeing you on screen, playing a character, but rather now we learn more on a personal nature and can share too, like I am doing at present. I await for you to make personal responses in your blog to each of the respondent’s enteries, which to me seems awesome! Thank you for all your hardwork, brilliant performances and for simply being you - Amitabh Bachan. I salute you for all that you have offered to someone like me and the world at large. God bless.

It is really sad that media and journo’s have become like this today. Whom do we believe then…is all the news thats comes on tv, web, magazines, newspapers all fabricated. If this is how it is, Grow up and be responsible folks, just not done. Like every job demands integrity, every corporate has code of conduct, The press / journalism fraternity should have one.
Disappointing..like all other recent stories that one has seen be it on TV, elsewhere. Wish we had some upright and high integrity journalism back.

My dear Mr. Bachchan,
I see your point and can understand why you get annoyed with this article. However, after reading the article which I did before reading the rest of this entry, I did not feel the author meant to redicule you and your marital bond. It could have been just a matter of misunderstanding. After all as an individual she is entitled to her opinion, but it does not mean that readers will see it the same way.
When I read the part where you were quoted as saying “The entire episode was staged and a part of the act. We used props.” I thought you were just being sarcastic or humourous. It never occurred to my mind that you would say something like that seriously, for I know how earnestly you cherish your marriage. Moreover, the main quote of the article is “Jaya and I had our additional moment. I could not help but get personally emotional.” which shows your sensitive and loving side. Had she intended to attack you, she would have used the sentence you feel you have been misquoted to attract attention from readers before they even read the whole article!
You have the right to be angry and you have the right to clarify yourself. However, with respect, you can express yourself and how you feel without being too harsh, can you not? By simply writing in your blog that you have been misquoted people will get the message. Your fans know you. We all respect you. Jayaji and you are the ideal couple for us. Thus there is no way a single article can mislead us to believe otherwise.
I love Abhimaan and I hope to see you relive ‘Teri Bindiya Re’ on stage in London. If possible I would love to see you redo the scene where you touched your lips (which reprensents a kiss) when you look at Jayaji, and she would cast down her eyes with extreme shyness. That was the cutest and most loving scene I have ever seen!
Have a safe journey to London. I am eagerly waiting to see you. I wish I could meet you in person but I suppose that is just a wishful thinking!
We still love you to bits, even when you are grumpy.

My beloved Mr.Bachchan,
Was about to sign off for today, when I noticed that you had written an additional info. So ended up reading it and am seething with anger right now!! Gosh, how heartless and terrible are these journalists?? Ready to sell their souls to the devil himself it seems. Evil to the core.
Now coming to your earlier blog on journalism, I think it was so very fitting to give this as a live and fresh example is which direction they head. Do we need any more answers? NO WE DON’T!!
And what a fantastic apt reply you gave her. APPLAUSE; APPLAUSE; APPLAUSE!!YES; YES; YES!!! Ms. Bharati, go get a life woman!! And you still manage to call her “dear lady”!!! WHAT A GENTLEMAN!!
This is where you excel above the others. That’s what makes you different and unique. Stay the way you are. You leave me speechless every time.
Wishing you a very good night. Hope the responses you receive from us act like balm to all this negative press given. Remember you are MORE LOVED than ever.

Bachchan Saheb,
Adding on to my thoughts which i started in reply to your blog entry of day 120:
I had mentioned that Indian reporters particularly those who cover showbiz would try at everything to sell their circulate no matter at what cost. Ms. Bharti is one example of how low she can go to enter her thoughts / artilce in the newspaper and come out looking good in the editior’e eye. The editor is convinced that more copies would sell NOW because Ms. Bharti wrote an excellent article. The common man, after reading Ms. Bharti’s article, would make fun of your relationship with Jaya saying Amitabh needs props to show his love for his wife. “Sathiya Gaya hai”..wagairah wagairah….
Ms. Bharti can never come back with the true story because she has no character and has sold her thinking to pacify AAM JANTA. I wonder what she might have sold of her to get the job in the first place :-). The Editor is next person without any concious because he would also never try to rectify this story and care to say sorry in the footnotes. He would not call up Ms. bharti and ask for the verecity of the article. I think both are sleeping in the bed:-) not literally though
Khaled Mohammad is another example who has no life.
Cheers,
Shant

Well, wife is always a WIFE. I can see from your eyes that this what you feel to tell Jayaji …
I see you as a beautiful women of Kindness and love,
With a big heart for others that your always thinking of.
I love how you smile it makes your eyes shine and twinkle,
Or your laugh when its funny if its not just a wrinkle.
I love your way of hugging and holding me close,
Or staring at my face and smiling, loving me most.
You mean more to me than anything in life ,
I’m happy the Lord did make you my wife.
I’ve looked for your love in all the wrong place,
But I find it in your eyes when I look at your face.
I love to remember our olden days & even now,
I never took you for granted and you always looked nice.
My heart sings songs of happiness when I’m in your heart,
And cries out for your love when we are apart.
I just need you to know that I always am here,
I will never leave your heart nor create any fear.
You gave me your heart and I gave you mine,
I hope that you love me till the end of time.

Dear friend,
HI, how are you?
I read this article in the morning.Journalists modify the truth in their own way, which no remains truth in itself.
They cook the news with salt and chillies and make it spicy. They can make a mountain out of a molehill.media has power, but they don’t use it in right spirit. Only they want to run their organisation. Corruption is everywhere. media is not different from it. But then they can’t hide the truth.Truth is like sun, no cloud can hide it for long time.

This is on your NY show. I travelled from Boston to NY for this show and stayed there. Me and my wife enjoyed tremendously. Few suggestions for improvement from the show. This is the best place I can write about it, though nothing to do with you directly. I hope this would be taken in good spirit for the betterment of shows from India in future:
1) Good - well organized, great presentation and above all Mr Bachchan. Everyone else tried their best and added value.
2) Points for improvement (I might be wrong in my observations, and apologize in advance - but overall I think following in true)
a) It was independence day. The organizers (Bharat Jotwani, Victor Khubani, Sona Patel) came on stage to talk to audience. DID NOT wish Independence day. DID NOT even mention it.
b) Next was Long Island County Executive Mr. Thomas Suozzi who was brought on stage by Mr Jotwani. He greeted in Hindi, addressed Indian communities in their welcome phrases (Sikhs, Gujaratis and others) wished everyone Happy Independence Day (in english and Hindi), and before closing - chanted Jai Hind 3 times. Something to learn. I was deeply touched.
3) From the stars - Ritesh Deshmukh (explicitly wished). Yourself and and one of Vishal/Shekhar mentioned Independence Day in passing in english. No-one else even mentioned it. At one point I was just sitting there with my head down, shaking my head in bewilderment, scolding myself, wondering what am I doing - spending so much time and taking so many efforts, to see “stars†from India who dont even remember that today is “Swatantrata Diwas†or Independence day. Also, when does one get a chance to wish 15000 people at once? It just did not make sense from any angle.
4) Lack of Hindi - we attend such shows usually to ‘connect’ (this one was an exception - I was there just for you). If few lines of hindi are used while communicating with the audience, it feels good and at home. Only Madhuri Dixit greeted everyone in hindi and spoke a few words. Else Hindi was just being used for commercial purposes (songs and dialogues in Indian Cinema are mostly in Hindi) and not to touch or connect with the audience. At the least I expected some hindi from you, just because you are very good at it.
Hope its taken in right spirit.
Thanks

I think Bharti wanted to convey something else and Mr Bachchan took it in a different perspective. I personally feel that Bharti’s intention was good and there is no need to go into all the fine details of her print. It is only a reminder of old days for all of us and we shud not look for any deeper meaning in this article. Bharti of course needs to improve her writing as some of her lines cud convey a different meaning. But I am very sure that her intention has been good where as the only thing is that it is not expressed in the right way.
PEACE AT ALL COSTS

Excellent! This reporters need to be scolded for what brain-dead things they do. I’m glad you’re paying good attention to how they manipulate the information and affect your character overall. All my life I used to read media articles about you being a big fan of yours. But now I think I will only read your blogs and will never trust media on such articles. Great job!

Amazing picture…..love u love u loveu…..
Well said to Ms Bharti…Emotions and sentiments know of no age, caste, creed and season….They are treasureless, extremely personal, divine, and beautiful…
May you have many more such instances and may you live long…The generations coming ahead need to see more of you and to read more that you write. Trust me it is enriching and nice.
Keep well!

You are always bluntly ruthless and arrogant to slight criticism heaped on you .
You need to learn to be polite and ignore the paparazi…

Nither I know this Bharati nor i have read that news paper, it’s a very bad practice to get attention by using such nonsense. but people are loving to do it repeatedly now a days.by the way it’s so gorgeous to see you both in 2008’s Abhimaan..hehe.

i agree that it is hurtful to find press adding mirch masala for veiwers consumption… n i hate how they spoil the beautiful moment.
well i think the heading means that the love n romance you share with your wife has come to life again today…. and a question mark… it does not question your yesterday… but it questions if your love continues to remain till now.. which is not good.

I agree with you that the reporter should not have played with your feelings by writing such statements about you and Jayaji. I would say as we grow old our sentiments and feelings becomes more stronger…..God bless you both and your family….
With lots of love & Hugs

Sir,
There was once a newspaper vendor who had a rude customer. Every morning, the Customer would walk by, refuse to return the greeting, grab the paper off the shelf and throw the money at the vendor. The vendor would pick up the money, smile politely and say, “Thank you, Sir.” One day, the vendor’s assistant asked him, “Why are you always so polite with him when he is so rude to you? Why don’t you throw the newspaper at him when he comes back tomorrow?” The vendor smiled and replied, “He can’t help being rude and I can’t help being polite. Why should I let his rude behaviour dictate my politeness?

Me and My family have always enjoyed your movies.. specially those with Jaya Aunty or rishikesh mukherjee (i hope i have spelled that right)

Dear Amit Uncle,
It’s a pleasure to see you stand up for your relationship with Jaya Aunti. Your whole family is such a class act and it is such a pleasure to witness you guys together.
I wish you guys had done this act in LA also, but I’m glad that you create new ideas on your tour in order to improve as you go. I can’t wait to hear what you and Vishal and Shekhar came up with for your Europe leg. Hopefully you’ll let us know what you guys did. Good luck in London this weekend.
BTW, about your comment that you feel most people responding are from the USA. Maybe you can have us enter where we are writing from (the way we enter our name and email) in order for you to track it better.

oh…the subtlety of the language, the fine text between the lines.
No, I don’t mean to trivialize your annoyance, but you know, in a world connected by bytes over the ether instead of “streaming audio”, things get a bit misconstrued here and there. Then again, “I kin taak inglees, I kin baak inglees, beekaaj ingless ij a bheri phunny langage !”

Namaste,
It was good to see you clear all wrong doings of the press in public. Thanks!
I would take this opportunity to congratulate you on India’s twin medal day in the Olympics and ask one question. I dont know whether it deserves a reply or not.
Can you or may be your organisation do something to bring up sporting talents or sponsor them in sports other than cricket?
I know of Mittal Champions Trust (http://mittalchampionstrust.com/) doing amazing work , Its just a request.

hello sir,
thanks for clearing this actually yesterday evening online i had read this article and the comment and was going to ask you on your blog and just skipped out of my mind. when i read this article also i felt that you in your blog wrote you had an emotional moment and now to mumbai mirror you write it was an act and prop.
Ms bharati pls keep this in mind when you are young emotions are many a times supressed or people are just busy and no time to deal with sentiments or emotions, but when you get older you live on emotions and sentiments and that is true marriage or for that matter any relationship.
sir in any case just loved the picture i was not lucky to see you both this way in houston but at least i am glad could see this picture but bharati no credit to you as you published wrong wordings why the hell do you do that ? i think you could just have put the picture and commented how beautiful they look also would gain you much more publicity than by putting wrong words
once again sir and mam you both look great and jayaji face looks so vibrant and also there is a blush on her face .
love renu

The internet is a powerful tool isn’t it? Without your blog and your response, the readers were bound to be mislead by the newspaper article … keep on blog-ing for many years to come please …
(Report abuse)
After reading the above it appears that you are over-reacting to a newspaper article. I assume that after years of dishonest press covergage, it has become difficult to stay silent. The press is what it is. Their job is to make up news at someone else’s expense. After so many years of hard work and good deeds you have earned your respect. It really serves you no purpose to get into a debate with these people and make them more important then they really are. “If you choose to wrestle in the mud you will not remain clean”.

GOD BLESS Both of you!!!
