Film City, Mumbai. July 3, 2008. 8:09 pm

The above came out in the DNA, Newspaper, Mumbai.

Its getting contagious !

Would love to read your comments on this. Some of your comments on the earlier press cuttings were very perceptive. Maybe we should initiate a discussion on this later some time. I also found an interesting article on inflation, but since my knowledge of finance and matters connected, is so abysmal, I chose to keep away.

The misery at home continues. Now Jaya’s mother has had a fall and fractured her hand and finger and has several bruises. She was out on her morning walk and probably tripped. Jaya has rushed to Bhopal where she stays to be with her. Aishwarya continues to struggle with her german measles and is facing weakness and body ache. Abhishek has improved and started work.

The electrician, which so many of you remembered and inquired after, had his first surgery yesterday and all went well. He has another to go in a few days. Thank you  for your concern for him. Very considerate of you to ask.

I am on my last shot for the day at Film City for tentatively titled ‘Shoebite’ and shall do a quick change to attend Aamir’s invitation for his nephew’s film ‘Jaane tu…’. Then back to my blog again before retiring for the night.

More later

My love,

Amitabh Bachchan

    Hi Mr. Bachchan

Today is a special day… its July 3.Today is the day when u made ur spectacular tv debut with KBC and for months you continued to enthrall us.I remember I was quite excited and anxious and waited with bated breath for the clock to strike 9. To say the least I enjoyed every bit of it just like millions of other viewers.
There something more to it that has made it more special. The channel had hired some youngsters for the promotion of the show who were distributing the prizes to those who answered correctly. I was passing by and saw one cut-out of urs. I don’t think if I ever wanted anything so badly. After the event was about to end my siisre & I went to ask about the cut-out & I GOT IT! Its has been my most prized possession till date. I got so excited after getting it I was wondering if I would be able
to drive at all. Thankfully I was able to, I kept it on my table proudly and till this date it adorns my room and will continue to do ever !
And I celebrate this day with a Dairy Milk chocolate !!

    Take care
    Love & regrads

    Dear Mr B,

I really wish there was a predictability in when you would blog so that I could be the first to comment at least once :)

This is a nice article. I remember a time when it journalism was considered almost like a sacred profession and now we see sacrilege in media everyday. Had I been a journalist, I would have been ashamed to earn my living this way.

It is great to read your blog everyday and I hope to see you in person someday although this is a fair enough substitute.

Take care and lots of love,

    Hello sir
I am actually sending this message for Abhishek and Ash. I read an article About the two of them having a fight. Just want to tell them welcome to married life.
Marriage is not always Hunky dory. If they didn’t have a dispute I would think something is really wrong with them but thank God they are like a Normal couple.
It is tough being Under the radar at all times but honestly even though you are a star it is best to be yourself and say hell to the hound dogs.
I wish them both all the best. My advice as a married woman if you need have a harmonious married life it is necessary to vent out your anger at your partner coz he/she is the only person who understands you.

I think more than the media which in anyway are crap instead of disccusing important events like nuclear deal, inflation they are out with some stupid information and I think we should discuss more about nuclear deal and inflation and as individuals what we can do and not give importance to media.

Lets have a discussion on nuclear deal it is amazing to see that Samaj wadi party is supporting congrss on nuclear deal though they are against each other ,
lets talk about that plssssssssssssss and not only on media it is become boring now, lets give media a break for some time and have a discussion on much other imp matters.

    Dear Amitji,

U know what yesterday while commenting on an article on ur blog i was thinking whatever is written in this article……:-O
Me and my hubby always discuss about the News channels in India…….Earlier i used to like watching news but these days it was impossible for me to listen the manipulating news channel reporters…….Sometimes i used to feel that these anchors too know what they are doing is not right but still they do it for the sake of MONEY or GOD KNOWS WHAT!
    Arushi’s case is a complete disaster !
the girl was 14 yrs old and on the top of it shez MURDERED! BRUTALLY!!!
And these news channels are spicing up the story by saying that she had Relations with her servant:-O
then after 1 -2 days they started saying that her father has extra marital affairs with one of their close family friend and Arushi was said to be aware of this affair ,,,, thats what might be the reason behind her murder!!! :-O
What the heck……Dont they understand the seriousness of the situation?
What if all this is not true? What if something else gets proved in the court?
U think Arushi’s Parents would EVER FORGET ALL THIS????
And even if Media apologises to them ….its always going to be there as a deep scar in their hearts!
I really wish there should be atleast some initiative taken by young aspiring Journalists to do something about this!
Amitji …have u seen SANSANI on ZEE NEWS EVER? OH GOD!!!! the Anchor of the show itself looks like the BIGGEST TERRORIST!!!! :-O
The way he shouts , the way he talks My hubby always mimics him he he he he he!
Do watch it if u get time….i am sure u’ll have a hearty laugh!

ANywyas, i am sorry to hear about Jayaji’s mommy!
We Wish her a very Fast recovery :-)

    Dear Amitji,

It is a sad fact that our media has crossed all boundries of ethics. However, if actions of the press are governed by the government, then it would not go with the vibrant democracy that India is. Instead, concerned people in the Indian media must take initiative and create a self-regulating body that issues and regulates guidelines for the media. This will help arrest this exploding volcano of media made hype and news headlines.

    Hello Amitji,

Firstly I best wishes for good health and peace of mind for all the members of family and extended ones like the electrician. We all here can empathise with you. Make sure that complete medication and bed rest is taken by all. And leave rest to GOD. He will take care of all.

This article about the moral policing that you published is very relevant and grave concern for evry moment. I did see the same news on CNN IBN.

It is really strange but the very few religious “extremist” (they like to call themselves as “GURU DE BANDE” in sikhism) I had the oppertunity to interact with seldom know the exact reason for the protests and war cries on MORALITY IN SOCIETY.

It may not be right to dwelve such family matters, but my father and granpa also fall in the same category many times. They watch the KATHA on TV and attend KIRTANS in gurudwara, but 9 out of 10 times don’t follow them. And then they are always upfront to tell us how we disregard our religion.

I have still not undertood MORALS and RELIGIONS.Are morals not supposed to change with times and generations? Agreed that Respect, Love, Empathy, and many others are Universal but their application change with the changing times.

I have many time complained about media, but unknowing fall into spreding the gossips on it thinking it to be a fun time. Hypocracy?? That is what life has been made by us. Shame that we agree to it! But that is the time!

We don’t know what does our brother and sister like to study in free time, but we love to lend an ear for the reason why an arhuement broke down in the neighbourhood.

    HYPOCRACY!!!

Media was ‘invented’ by us to keep us updated with things we miss in the fast lives of modern times, not to dictate how we live our lives. But now that is what is happening!

I have no idea how exactly the media functions outside India, but what I have read and seen on media is that there are 3 types of journalisn:

    1) Responsible Journalism (which is no where to be seen. And all those who sau that it is still there in pieces, know that it is also for TRPs)

    2) Paparazzi Journalism (this is something I have been hearing and reading about the ‘WESTERN MEDIA’ for some 4-5 years now. It is all those chasing cameras for tid-bits and features, something I first relate with Princess Diana’s Death)

    3) Tabloid Journalism (the third and the most harmful to the development of society and its individuals, something India media IS NOWADAYS, since PAST 2-3 YEARS)

Not only Tabloid Journ.degrading the personal development of people in India, but is the ONLY REASON (I STRONGLY BELIVE, VERY STRONGLY) for all these protests in INDIA.

MEDIA covers every such inconsiquential protest in the rarest part of INDIA, beating drums about its reach. And it has lead to people using it very cleverly, evidently, for politica reasons. And usualy the users are first unheard and later nation importance type.

case in eg: JODHAA AKBAR protest in RAJASTHAN and BEYOND (AMBALA- are there any RAJPUTS THERE??? THEY JUST EMERGED, defuing census reports) and very evident RAJ THAKEREY and MARATHI MANUS issue.

what is the final verict on media’s shower of importance on them - RAJPUT SABHA has grown in nos since FEB’08 and a very important player in deciding vote bank. And a special mention to MR LOKENDRA SINGH KALVI, the self confessed saviour of the RAJPUT AAN BAAN SHAAN from IMMORAL FORCES.

ANd yup, MNS is now of NATIONAL IMPORTANCE.

IN the end, what really are morals. Are they not about atleast giving the other person a chance to say his/her stand (EMPATHY).

We may be ousting MF Hussain for demoralising the society with his paintings evey day, but then who are we to boast of him to be an INDIAN who made us all proud!

    HYPOCRACY……………………..

    Mr. Bachchan,

First of all I want to say that you and your family have my best wishes. It’s very unfortunate how illness and accidents have plagued your family and household. It must be very chaotic and a worry having to deal with illnesses from Ash, her father, Abhi, and now your mother in law. The saying of when it rains, it pours is actually a very true saying. However God does not give people anymore than they can handle or endure. The measles are much harder on adults so it will just take a bit more time for Ash to completely recover. I’m so glad to hear that Abhi is much better and back at work. Mrs. Jaya Bacchhan’s mother will also fare well in her recovery. I’m positive that Ash, Abhi, and your mother in law will have complete and full recoveries. In the end all will be well and back to normal. I’m sending positive vibes and best wishes to you and all of your family!

As to the article. I completely agree with Vohra. The media is only out for ratings and money. They don’t care two wits about honesty, facts, truth, or morals. The media just blatantly copies and recycles any of bit of trash news that they think will get them eyeballs and high ratings. The more desperate the media is for ratings and money the more ludicrous, malicious, and sensationalized the stories will be in the end. It’s does not matter to the media that the junk they are putting out as fact is actually faker than a wooden leg.

The media does not care that the malicious and manipulated lies they are putting out is ruining careers or lives, or soceties. They just want to reach their bottom line which is money and ratings. To hell with the truth, facts, integrity, or morals. The print, electronic, and television media are pretty much bereft of scruples and common decency. The days of the media just reporting the facts and the truth are long gone as are the days of the media taking up the plight of the common man or being the factual eyes of society. We can no longer rely, depend, or trust the media to be any sort of truth teller. We just can’t trust the media at all theses days because of their unscrupulous tactics and manipulation. This is a extremely unfortunate. Its something that needs to change. The media has got to begin changing for the better because at this juncture they are in the bottom basement without morals.

    Best wishes!!

  36. Tashana says:

Thank you for scanning that article! Definitely an interesting read. The various forms of moral policing in India (particularly Bombay) are absolutely fascinating to me - in fact, they make up the theoretical framework for much of my M.A. thesis! Ms. Vohra’s documentary sounds really interesting, and I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on a copy at some point.

As far as my own perceptions go, I find it interesting how groups like the VHP are posited (for the sake of optics) as a marginal movement (at least in the international media), yet their ideologies seem to permeate much further and much deeper into mainstream society. The media surrounding Bollywood is a perfect example. It drives me absolutely nuts when I surf for online news about films, looking for information on their box office numbers, or the director/actor’s thoughts on the actual technical process, and instead I find nothing but bitchy, petty pieces taking personal shots at people involved with the film. All the stupidity about ‘kissing controversies’ and ‘moral’ behaviour onscreen, to me, is not journalism, it’s low-level blogging, and has no business in established media outlets. Yet this kind of coverage persists, because the so-called ‘marginal’ politically radical elements in the community are able to fog-horn and bully us into submission. When the most influential (i.e. radical/violent) socio-political elements among us are allowed to intimidate us, harass us, with near-complete impunity with regards to our ‘moral’ behaviour, why shouldn’t the entertainment media take that as a green light to do the same with celebrities and others in the industry? Why shouldn’t they make outrageous intrusions into your personal lives, criticize your private behaviour, and concern themselves with your ‘morality’ over your work? The ‘moral police’ do the very same thing with the general public every day.
The only way the entertainment media will adjust their behaviour is if society sends a strong message, to ALL involved, that there is (or should be) a distinct and inviolate line between the public and the private, and that it will no longer encourage attempts to interfere with or otherwise dictate private or personal behaviour, either through acquiesance or through submissive silence.

    Dear Amitji,
Its been a while I really read the newspapers. This kind of acticle opens my eyes to the facts called life. We ourselves live day to day, resolving (if that means anything) our daily routine, when something/someone like this is affected.

The concept of Jehad is unknown to me. I guess, its the concept of making a choice to do the right thing. I am sure, no religious text is so shallow as to insinuate to erase a culture, religion or human beings. I suppose all religions time and again teach us to eradicate the evil only.

I totally do not understand the media, they sensationalize everything, sometimes to an extent of overbearingness, I change the channel or the newspaper at times.

However, I have noticed some good acticles and awareness in DNA, which is refreshing, however, my concerns are the same, power corrupts and ultimate power corrupts ultimately.

I hope your mum-in-law is now recovering well. I shall say a soft prayer for her tonight.

Ash is young and will surely bonce back, however, I hope she takes her time and recover fully as many times if you are anxious, the problem of relapse is so evident.

Wish you could give some input on the film Jane Tu and your thoughts on it..

In a way , I am glad to know that atleast voices have started rising for this sensationalised TV news reporting. Whenever we watch TV news ,it appears as though we are watching another of repetitive and never ending Balaji’s TV serials…Me and my family have stopped watching couples of years back and I think we will stop watching our TV news altogether…We are in USA and switch on TV news just to know what is going on in our dear country…and always end up feeling miserable….

There was one news that a slum deweller lady had picked up a baby girl from trash…And the TV channels..even the reputed ones like CNN-IBN were asking such questions from the lady..”hey tell us…what were you feeling when you picked up that girl…you wanted to make her a doctor?” Now come on…..why these stupid questions…This reporting could have been reported in millions of better ways….

Till now it is moslty fans get only to stare at stars and clap for them,
this is like u coming and shaking hands with us.
It is so nice and friendly.

Some stars are not connecting to fans so well, even in younger generation,
they r like always in the introduction stage, saying hi! and being painfully
formal and trying to be so prim and proper so that their body aches,
Who wants to hear the cliches?
its like a person who is introducing himself all over again when u
have met him 1000 times and is not proceeding in any relationship in any way.
    no casual conversation.
also in movies same formula, introduce hero/heroine a problem and solve it.
people are intelligent they get u the first time why repeat urself is my
question to younger generation. there shld be more progress.
ad leave the obvious and go one tell the next point.
they know there is a hero and heroine and they r humans frm this planet our country
how diffrnt r they going to be??? sow only the speciality!
people might not progress a lot externally ut in mind they do want more.
a movie becomes bore bfore its release itself sometimes.

ur blog is warm and homely.

People want to connect, they r moving more forward than stars now
and are very progressive, girls have many male friends and vice versa
and they have very pure friendship too!
no one minds too much nowadays
    but some stars r like
we never speak to each other,
    we never make mistakes
we love ourselves and so on
our director/ producer r all Gods!
    cast, crew, location
    not humane or warm
You an your family are a relief from such people

we never get to see them get togather and speak casually,
they tell press will take it wrongly but they r just joking and harmless
fun, passing time thats all. they r humourous in thier attitude!
    sometimes it happens i understand.

there is need in society of younger people to connect, express their true feelings!
to society at large thru stars,
this gap is filled by Tv shows like roadies and tv soaps and family shows, esp by blogs.
tv stars are filling this gap but film stars can do better isnt it?
    as public loves them best.

Still people r talking like movie is product, starring
in the video a profession, their movie never boring and must watch and so on.
one becomes star just by doing a role aand others are just junior artis??
    it is immature attitude.
we shld grow out of this and get casual as technology is advancing.
There shld be warmth and touching out.
    more conversation.
one can become a star by first touching peoples lives and getting a place in their hearts
    and minds
This will definitely happen since u have taken such a leadership.

    Dear AB,

It’s certainly getting contagious and which is a good thing. Will it turn into a real change in behaviour or action remain to be seen. U (some extent us too) have initiated it and that’s enough. To do the right thing is the only inportant and necessary. It may or may not create a result or change.

Your desire to go back in memory lane of “Silsila” days and relive those musical moments created by three music mastero throw lights on human nature. Why we are never satisfied? Why we always ask for more and more? Why do we live in the past? Past which is over and never ever recreated and still we hope for that!!! Memory-which is merely a thought and still it has become everything for us! If one is completely with the moment then there is no need to think about it later. Don’t u think music, acting, writing, painting & other artistic skills are just the skills like any other skills and there is no need to put or divide artist from common man. In daily life they are not different or superiour from others. It’s absurd to say or to think that they are closer to god! They all are full of envy, jealosy, violence & all other human traits. They all want fame and money and to put them up there doesn’t justify.

    Pl do give your input.

    dear amitabh,

while i agree with you that the media does tend to sensationalize…and it certainly will do anything to create the ‘live breaking news” on anything and everything……it is never the less an important part of the democracy that we live in…

but after reading that article, i want to speak to you on ANOTHER subject…and which is conected to the newspaper article you have pasted…

it is true that muslim boys do entice hindu women ….

And i have no objections to the above…because it is entirely up to the two mature consenting adults to decide what they want to do with their life…if the boy is a muslim and the girl is a hindu, it doesnt really matter to an educated cultured doctor such as myself…but….the pschological disconect starts there…

adolescent love cannot be a one way street….in the secular fabric that we live in,one must respect each others religions and behave accordingly…

and while i say that adolescent love and eve-teasing is a harmless adolecent activity(provided it doesnt get out of hand) and as such,it should not be discussed or discouraged at all….i want to again point out …THAT IT CANNOT BE A ONE WAY STREET!!…

muslim women, are kept hidden away by their men behind the burquh, and in their homes..while the young muslim men roam the streets freely and hang around the malls and the public spaces enticing or eveteasing young hindu girls…whats wrong with that?…nothing!!….BUT,MY DEAR SIR, YOU MUST AGREE,IT CANT BE A ONE WAY STREET!!

let the women of both communities intermingle freely with one another, and let a thousand love stories blossom between hindu boys and muslim girls and …vice versa….nothing wrong with that…

for the secular fabric of our country to survive,we cant have one way streets developing in sensitive issues such as this….this is one of the main reasons(though not the only reason) for the simmering tensions between the two communities….

is it too much to ask for ? that the muslim woman be unshakled of the burquah?…and be like any other woman on the streets and shopping complexes of india?…

i know it will take some guts for you to post this on your blog page….but you MUST POST my thoughts….i too am a doctor, and i know what iam talking about….

if this country is to survive….we need muslims to change the way they think about their women…

    thanking you

I feel its a very good article. Infact I was wondering with all these moral police doing the rounds are we really living in free India??? Do the political parties and the moral police who vandalize such romantic moments really mean what they say or just get some cheap publicity. I am sure about one thing that as India goes global with new technologies connecting everything to the internet, no one is going to support such moral friendly political parties. I am not supporting any wrong-doings of the small amount immoral youth culture, but I have seen even the good ones facing the brunt. Some days back this moral police tried to do the same with me when I was just having a chat with my wife on the hill near my house, doing nothing immoral. Due to my contacts I could stop them.. what would a common person do? And how many times could I use my contacts or power? Its becoming very silly on the part of such people to be so cheap in name of morality and culture.

I think eventually the youth will come up with things like shown in ‘Rang de Basanti’ but I pray that their end isn’t as tragic. There has to be a revolution planned which should be launched strategically and simultaneously. Though no plan can be full-proof atleast one should be impenetrable. We’ve had enough of this nonsense.

Today only my wife was getting panicky over the cheap news channels showing how the VHP bandh today is affecting normal people. She was trying to stop me from going to work. Very calmly I asked her to switch to CNN IBN or Times Now, and said if this channel is making the same kind of hype over this subject I wont go. Like I had guessed, it was showing other news. A very clear beautiful example where we know all other channels can show anything from Aliens, Lord Rama coming to life or a boy turned into a girl due to undying love.. CRAPPPP!!!!

F*** the Press… BigB Blogs are the best!!!

We require rationing of petrol for non commercial activities and subsidy to transporters based on their IT returns sothat they will not feel heat of the petrol disel rise and need not increase theie prices as wud be compensated directly by the govt. Dear Amitabh jee

the artcicle’s copy is not clearly visible.

it talks about the morality of news show. in our country news channel have yet to grow up. they are those small children who play gully cricket and are yet to see a proper pitch.

with 24 news channel, they find it hard to show something worthwhile every minute. in this race to be present every minute they have to copy the news. how can one be left behind, after all they are not competing for quality but quantity of time of our mind.

they would rather break a celebrity’s (or even a common man’s) privacy rather than going for preparing some news material that might have the potential to make the society think.

i don’t know when they will follow some morality and stop maligning someone or showing something which may well be called obscene.

    take care.
hope everyone in family gets well soon.

    Dear Sir

I am very happy with some of your recent posts because they dont give the media any more “breaking news”. “Amitabh outscores SRK”, “Big B pats himself” were the headlines on some new channels. yes another one “Big B catches cold”. I am sure they dont have reporters looking for news outside your house any more. All they have to do is read your blog and moblog and get the “breaking news”. But I wont really blame it on media entirely. we live in the world of instant gratification and attention spans are reducing by the day. people are so engrossed in their own lives that they dont have time for anything else and all people want is some relaxation when they get home. In such a scenario New channels can’t telecast any K serials so they r left to the next best option :”breaking news” and another of the pet word of the news channels “exclusively on our channel”. You would have conducted a press conference but it would be “exclusively” on multiple channels at the same time.

Getting away from new channels, I wish everyone at your home a speedy recovery and may god grant you the strength to manage all that. Saw the first promo of God tussi great ho yesterday on youtube and cant really wait to see it and neither can i wait for shoebite….

    Amitji,
Good write-up. This goes back to the comments which I had made a couple of days ago. Most of the electronic media today is governed by TRP ratings and who is going to break the next big story, to take the chest thumping coveted place. The moral boundary which exists is getting thinner by the day. So, in this context, it does not matter if channels talk ill about a being who no longer exists among us or holding a father responsible for her demise, well before even the initial investigations are complete. Things do take time, but for channels, news is about the way they want to hear and the way they want it to be heard.
We have already reached a stage, where a channel places a question for the viewers to respond, concludes on the result and passes the judgement. Days are not far of, when we might see channels running contests on such facts.
Sensationalizing news can not build trust and respect in the long run. Electronic media in India is in its infancy and we know infants commit mistakes and (hopefully) learn from them. It takes time to mature.

    Take care of your health

    Hello sir,
I thought I could make a good journalist but I have dropped the idea now. I don’t think I will be able to cope with such masala journalism. I prefer business journalism though, far more exciting, interesting and intellectually inclined I believe, no masala stories there. As for news channels, for long we have been mocking them in the privacy of our homes, for presenting news in the most bizarre way possible. Some of them show local babas sitting with weird stuff claiming to perform magical charms — actually giving a weekly time slot to such a programme. Just the other day while surfing channels I happened to be on a news channel claiming that an actress was called ‘Bhabhi’ during the shoot of her soon to be released film by all and sundry and she apparently had no issues with that. Continuously, for quite some time, a big collection of her photographs were shown one after the other with a voiceover in the background. Giving so much time to such news! Who cares! Does it hold any relevance? Now , the mocking of such channels is out in the open. It had to happen some day. I wonder which audience does this actually cater to? There are some english news channels though which are doing exactly what they are supposed to - showing news just the way it is– not distorting, trivialising news by converting it into a dramatic mindless fiction , complete with a voiceover for effect.
Wishing all related to you a good health.
    Your electrician a speedy recovery.

    Dear Amitji,
Today’s world is driven by one word “PROFIT”. So, morality, ethics etc have taken the back seat. And you know there is no social stigma attached to any dishonesty anymore which was not the case couple of years back. Say for example I have bought a car taking bribe. People will criticize me behind my back but if I offer to drive any of them for some place they will not refuse. And you know they might find virtues in me too! It is like I am honest means I have not got chance to be dishonest. And if I am a man of “principle” then I am a “stupid” man. You know we all are eager to what majority is doing. As if a “wrong” if it is committed by a lot of people then that becomes “right”. To do the right thing, not the popular thing needs courage. And you know the pitiful thing is we justify our actions like “kyun karna pada”. But, courage is free, anybody can have it. Thank you.

Reading this article was quite hard on my eyes but I got through it. I am reminded of the 1928 comedy “The Cameraman” by Buster Keaton and the scenes where he is filming the Tong War for the newsreel department of MGM. He sensationalizes it by instigating the fighting whenever there is a lull in the action by smashing lightbulbs, and strategically placing weapons in the men’s hands. It is obviously making fun of the media back then, so this kind of thing has been going on for ages. The head of the department finally watches the footage of this exciting Tong War and hires Buster.

I hope Jaya’s mother feels better. I guess it could have been worse such as a broken hip which is fairly common. Glad Abhishek is back at work. It is probably expected that it would take a while to completely recover from German Measles. I hope Aishwarya improves soon.
