Prateeksha,    Mumbai    June 10-11, 2008                midnight/7:47 am

The disciplined regimentation of a boarding school has often been replaced by the free spirit of independence as one enters University. Suddenly after uniformed and designated curriculum you find yourself having the choice of what you want to study, where and at what pace. You find yourself in the confines of your home; a most welcome relief after years of being away from it. Your travel and dress is not compartmentalized, there is a casualness in your demeanor and a relaxed independent attitude towards everything. The College or University café or canteen now becomes your most prized destination and if you have the benefit of that extra pocket money, a prominent and popular restaurant in the city fills you with an air of superiority. Parental control seemingly diminishes. Yes there is respect and answerability but not as severe. You are treated as an adult and with the acquired maturity, the contents of your thoughts and your mind, are often considered with a certain degree of pride.

The Campus also now has a diverse and varied section of alumni. They come from different academics, different vocations, different minds. Some, because of independent belief and the impatience of breaking out rapidly from the shackles of a committed and preconceived environment, encouraging and enveloping freer thought.

The exposure to the ‘complex’ world suddenly destroying their almost utopian existence in the years gone by.

Discussion and debate prevail. The state of the nation, the politics, society, morality, existentialism, life; just about every conceivable subject worthy of putting your mind to. From being told what to do, you are now telling what should be done. Almost overnight you become the saviors of the world and of humanity with your idealistic and non idealistic utterances.

There is now also the added pressure of the future. Peer pressure has put upon you the responsibility of not just being able to stand on your own feet, but also the responsibility of keeping the rest of the family on their feet. Most of us look upon this, with great reverence, as a traditional obligation. We must take control, get secure, earn a living, not just for us but for the entire family. We must not be dependent on them instead make them our dependence.

And that is when it happens !

Frustration !

The avenues and opportunities open to the youth today in an economically liberated India was absent in the late 50’s and early 60’s.

After graduation what ? Where to find a job ? What job ? How ? When ?

And the idealism and debate and the coffee house banter soon converts itself to anger.

The anger of not knowing what to do with ourselves.

You look for answers. You turn to those that may have them. You become followers of others’ wisdom; or seeming wisdom. You become vulnerable and porous. And on one ‘enlightened’ moment you get the answer from a fellow sufferer.

‘Why were we brought into this world ?’, a voice arose, ‘to suffer ?’

That’s it !

That’s the fault. We should never have been brought into this world.

Judgement passed.

Angered, frustrated, strengthened and armed with unreasonable thought, I walked into my father’s study one evening and for the first time in my life, with choked emotion, raised my voice at him and screamed -

“Why did you give birth to me ?” “Aapne hamme paida kyun kiya ?”

My father, immersed as he always was in his writing, looked up at me with some initial surprise and then settled down to a more understanding posture and remained so for almost eternity.

No one spoke. Not him. Not me. Not a sound.

Just the measured clicking of the time piece on his desk – and my un measured breathing !

When nothing came across from parent quarter, I turned and left.

It was an uncomfortable night for me.

The next morning my father walked into my room, woke me up and handed me a sheet of paper and left. I opened it. It was a poem he had written overnight – titled - ‘Nayi Leek’ - the new generation - the new beginning -

Nayi Leek

Zindagi aur zamane ki kashmakash se

Ghabrakar mere ladke mujhse poochte hain,

“Hamme paida kyun kiya tha ?”

Aur mere paas iske siwa

Koi jawab nahin hai

Ki mere baap ne bhi mujhse bina pooche

Mujhe paida kiya tha,

Aur mere baap se bina pooche unke baap ne , unhe,

Aur mere baba se bina pooche unke baap ne , unhe…

Zindagi aur zamane ki kashmakash

Pahle bhi thi

Ab bhi hai, shayad zyada,

Aage bhi hogi , shayad aur zyada.

Tumhi nayi leek dharana,

Apne baytoen se poochkar unhe paida karna !

 *

Pulled and torn by the strains of life and living

My sons ask me

“Why did you give birth to us ?”

And I do not possess an answer to this

That even my father did not ask me before giving birth to me,

Nor my father asked his father before producing him

Nor my grandfather did ask his father before bringing him.

The trials and tribulations of life and living

Were there before

And are there now too, perhaps more

And shall be there tomorrow, even greater.

Why don’t you make a new beginning, a new thinking,

Ask your sons before giving birth to them !

There are no excuses in life and no blame. Every morning is a fresh challenge. Either you learn to pick up the gauntlet and fight or learn to surrender to it. So long as there is life, there is struggle !

‘Jab tak jeevan hai, tab tak sanghgursh hai’ said my father, as he lay weak and almost comatose in his bed in Prateeksha.

The room is now adorned by his large framed photograph, exactly where he breathed his last. On a stand below it are his entire works, beautifully leather bound and by its side the Ramayan he read every morning. I dress his portrait with a garland of fresh flowers every day and a diya burns perpetually underneath. Few months ago, he was joined on the side by my Mother’s portrait - a divine face, a face she wore the day she married him.

Every day and every moment that I pass the room as I climb the staircase to my bedroom or down from it, I stop by the door and look at both of them. And ask for strength.

A light burns above them throughout the day.

It is the light of his wisdom that I endeavor to carry each day when I step out !

    Sir,

Wow! Again words do not express the Thanks to you for sharing some of the innermost thoughts with us. As your parents gave you strength, so you give us. And please understand that this is not an ‘effect’ statement - a statement made with no emotions and just uttered to create an effect of love. This is a genuine statement from the deepest part of the heart.

Legend has it that a Pheonix Bird rises from its own ashes. If there is any public person who best symbolises this, it is you. If ever one gets an opportunity one would like to meet with you just to understand what one should do when faced with the situations that you have been - almost dead, physically abused by disease, written off; humiliated - and then again rise from those ashes to reclaim life and HOW!

While your answer to that has always been ‘One day at a time’; I hope someday you will also share with us how does one live that day which is seeped in negativity and still see the light at the end of the tunnel. How does one live in darkness for the hope that there is light at the end.

Your blog is certainly different and has become a routine for me expecting words of wisdom every single day.

I saw Sarkar Raj yesterday and though i was a bit surprised at the ending…your performance was absolutely awesome…..i can only compare this performance with Vijay Dinanath Chauhan of Agneepath. My favorite scene in the movie is when you are refelcting on Vishnu’s life and death and Abhishek tries to tell you that you should forget him…..wonderful emotions and terrific dialogues……hats off to you

Amit, This coming from one of the most successful persons is thought provoking. When I read about all the tragedies happening all over and when I see people experiencing the hardships of day to day living I wonder, ‘is it wise to bring an innocent being into this heartless world?’. But certain things are beyond us and destiny wills what is in store for us most of the time. I personally feel it is better to end one’s lineage without producing progeny and avoid the guilt of bringing suffering to another soul by one’s action of reproduction. An evolved human being is in a much better position to take this type of decision than a mere animal.

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,

Thank you for yet another enlightening post which has truly hit the nail on the head. After graduation, I too felt lost, confused, and frustrated. Despite having a degree, I was not able to find a job that I had prepared for. I had no choice but to seek other jobs that were available by the dozen, where the employee turnover rates were so high, that almost anyone could get a job. This did little to boost my morale. God will always send his help through some channel. This time, he chose my dad as my channel. Through my dad’s help, I was able secure a position that matched my qualifications and was able to secure a foothold for the future.

Your father wrote a very beautiful poem for you and that helped you. My father, similarly, has helped me.

This relationship of a father and son is very unique. For those who look up to their father, as I’m sure most do, their fathers are their heroes. This is why I feel that no matter how successful I become, I can never equal my father. My father is my hero, as I’m sure your father is yours, and you are Abhishek’s. I’m sure you agree that a person’s father is that standard which the son hopes to achieve, but at the same time knows, he can never measure up to. And I think the son is probably at peace with that. I know I am. I know I can’t be the individual that my father is, but just trying keeps me going.

Thank you again for another beautiful post! The poem was very enligthening and is timeless as struggles will always surround us in some form or another!

    Best wishes and regards,
    Tariq

The avenues available to the youth, are indeed more now. But Is this youth not getting lost in the mass of avenues. Priorities keep changing withtimes, but then ignorance about the fact - that priorities keep changing and that they must be constantly brought back to track, to realign them towards achieving not only proffessional excellence but also intellectual maturity - is missing. When i look around people who can talk about anything under the sky, with knowledge and rationality, why is that segment very less in size. The people (of 20-30years) who need to be inquisitive about Life, its machinations, choices, reasons, psychologies, country, society etc are busy making career choices which are narrowed and filtered. Why dont we have young intellectuals? Is it all about upbringing alone? why dont the young have more questions? why is the destination more important than the search?
I really look up to you, more as a well-read and informed individual (apart from your profession). I always use this phrase to describe my state of mind - ‘Existential Angst’. I rarely see people who share the same state of mind, questions and thoughts.

we are quick to become frustrated because we have a preconceived notion of “what should be” and when “what is” doesnt match up, we pass judgment - postive, negative, our view. whereas “what is” is simply there- naked, without a color or a desire to be seen a particular way. and its raison d’etre is simply to teach… it is a learning - an opportunity for us to increase our knowledge… for all we have in this life is that - an opportunity to learn and to do without judgment, without expectation.

it is so difficult in society today with all its various hues and conditions on what success is and what “should be” to appreciate, simply, “what is”…

Poems I think should read like this one in your blog. They are simple, eloquent, easy to understand and have mass appeal (and the one in the blog infact even has a sarcastic sense of humor to it :))
People in their everyday life with their everyday struggles do not have time to relect, ponder or philosophize and so short, simple, thought provoking ’sound’ bites probably have greater impact on them than verbose, complex literature.

I have been meaning to submit a comment for a long time now about something that irked me when I read your blog from a while ago where U talk about the people working for you and you say - ” They remained devoted and servile and committed and constant. Their allegiance and sincerity never in doubt.” - while from the rest of thay entry, I am sure you meant that all of them were like your family, the word servile tends to give a connotation of rank by its very root from the word slave. One of things that I never cared about using before but I have consiously changed now is to never call someone a ’servant’ for the very same reason. Staying abroad for a few years and having to wash dishes, clothes and toilets :) (believe me that build character:)) by myself, I have realized that there is nothing menial about it and that it is one tough job! Since I need to refer to them, I now use this convoluted term that says ” X, who works in our house”. Initially I used to think the name (servant) does not matter and that if you say it with a clear consicence (you did not mean it that way) it does not matter, but given that an audience listens or reads what you say and might not have the same perception of it, I guess the name does matter.

My 2 cents…and now I have written a long essay on something that I am sure I could have said in short and a lot more eloquently :)

    Hi

That was so touching and yet so familiar.Guess we all ask that of our parents and not realize how much it hurts till our own children ask the same thing and we realize. I am living in Sydney and have a 7yr old daughter who says this sometimes and it pinches as I am separated and have to deal with a lot more comments than this one but this hurts the most as I sit and think I gave birth to you because you are the reason I live for. I am sure she will understand when she grows up. But amazing a parent’s love never questions anything.

Also wanted to say good on you to write this blog as for a while could not believe it was u urself but its amazing to have this from a man of ur stature. Looking forward to ur “Sarkar Raaj” As ever you would have done justice to the role. Good luck with everything.

    Dear Mr. Amitabh,

I learnt about the BigB website through TV. I logged in today to see if this is really true that ‘You’ are actually writing on this site almost daily.

I read through quite a few writings posted by you and truly enjoyed reading. It is just like reading a ‘Personal Diary’ of your favorite celebrity.

I feel it is good to make use of the latest technologies in a positive way. A few years ago, no one would have thought of communicating with their fans in such a way and for expressing their thoughts through a website. I guess its’ better late than never…

…. and the best thing is that once again, you have set new trends for others to follow.

Best wishes and we love you,

    Mr. Bachchan,
good to read ur post, ur father has given a poem when u asked a question, what you would do if ur child ask same question. I am just thinking the realty, if i would have been in ur place, i would ask him “why u have given this poem to me?”. A silly question’s silly answer. And in this post u didnt justified ur father’s response on ur question. Can u do it plz. Now u r in a age where u can share ur life experiences, do u think life is same as ur father was telling u or u read in his books. World is changing every moment, every moment itself changing. nothing is static, how can be few lines.

Finally saw Bhootnath yesterday-funny, sweet, moving-loved every frame..and I thought back to the time when I was a little girl and had said to my grandmother- its so nice to be a kid, isnt it? We.kids have all the fun because we love people as they are-and embrace what the universe has to offer. Its a beautiful story that reminded me again that in today’s world that is so ready to criticize, and is so cynical, it is so important to keep the child in you alive. Can’t wait for the sequel.
