Mehboob - Prateeksha June 1-2, 2008 11:05 am

It has been rough !

Extricating myself from the routine of every day commitments and the joyous routine of writing for the day here. I truly mean it. Until the blog for the day is put down and done with, until the task of running through the comments is studied, I remain preoccupied in my thought.

What must I say ? Should I respond to the questions of my fellow bloggers ? Should I inform them of what transpired the whole day ? Would they be interested in some more words from my Father ? Should I clarify some of the issues raised ? An observation a topic of current value ? What ?

The studio was hot and uncomfortable and the dress most undesired for the occasion. Long hair, overcoat and hat ! At 51 degrees on set it is horrendous. As soon as this ordeal was over there was the delight of a quick shower in the vanity van, change of clothes and on to a greater ordeal - facing the media, for the promotion of Sarkar Raj.

Electronic, print, radio all come on at the same venue, for paucity of time and in quick succession. The questions are limited and often the same. It is a test of skill for an actor to be able to give the same answers and yet make them sound as though they were different. That over, you rush to the rehearsals for the upcoming tour of concerts. Its been almost 18 years since I went on one and there are questions here too. What can I do for the audience now. Some nostalgia, something more recent. Dance ? Dear me ! How will I ever move this 66 year old ruined mass of body !

Back home and now setting up for my trip to Nainital. Sherwood College. My alma mater. Its founder’s Week and the class of 1958 is getting together after 50 years. That is a long time.

Seems like just yesterday we were getting packed in Delhi, having just unpacked from our transfer from Allahabad. The excitement of going to boarding, the uniform, the clothes and accessories being name tagged, right down to our socks and under wear, which was rather amusing. Ma filling up our bags with ‘tuck’ - home made goodies - jams and biscuits and chocolates and condensed milk. Meeting new faces at the station, parents, colleagues, teachers. The final bye-byes, the tears running down Ma’s face and she bravely trying not to show them. The bus up to the lake town from Kathgodam and the steep walk to the school. The dormitories, the classes, the sporting activities, the achievements and failures. Everything so vivid and clear.

And I wonder, will Nainital be the same after so many years. And Sherwood.

There is an anxiety and an apprehension, but such deep attachment and thrill. To be where we were 50 years ago and to tell the wife and the children, this is where we all became men !

Boarding school. The happiest days of your life !

Easy to say it now, but whilst we were there everything seemed such a torture !

Now we realize. Everything that we learnt in Sherwood we still put to use in our daily existence.

And so apt the school moto - MEREAT QUISQUE PALMAM - let each one merit their own prize !

And so to live and survive and struggle and achieve and to face defeat and remorse and to fight to get up again to endeavor to attempt to hope even in futility to risk to take chance to reach out to have character and dignity to savor humility to … to …just be able for…

EACH ONE OF US TO MERIT OUR OWN PRIZE !

My love for you as ever - strong and meritoriou

Dont you feel mundane at times answering to the same questions over and over again. I understand that in shoqbiz publicity is a must but do you as an individual think that it would have been better if all these wouldn’t have been there?
And about College being fresh as ever definetly, there can be no two opinions there.Hope you have a good time there

    Amitji,
You have mentioned about the 66 yr old mass and the dance. Let me tell you that you have been dancing better than your heydays these days. You had a sense of rhythm even then but you were not a graceful dancer, your one hand up and one hand on the hip dance was repetitive . But of late you have become graceful in dance and are giving the young actors a run for their money, be it Aks,Jhoom Barabar Jhoom or Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. So it is 60 saal ke Boodhe ya 60 saal ke jawaan.

    Dear Amitji,
What is Mehboob -? Prateeksha we know is your house. Did you meant Mehboob studio ? This blog was nostalgic as it took us 2 our old days back to school yes we learn each and everything we do today. Whatever you write is a kind of treat for us to read. Initially i thought Amitji will write blog for few days and will give up due to his hefty schedule, but i can believe how tough and discipline one has to become to become Big B. Really amazing that you are so punctual to the sets (Heard from all your directors) and so discipline as we can see it that you write and read the blog regularly. I would also remind one more attribute of yours which touched our hearts. It was i think launch of movie baabul…or something related to baabul. Dilip Kumar was invited and so he was on the stage with you, salman khan and rani mukherjee..and what we observed was the unique respect which you had for Dilip Kumar and you allowed Dilip kumar to take the center stage and wheras we didn’t see any sign of respect on salman khan but we saw it on your face giving Dilip Kumar ample space and letting yourself going to the background. It was touching and so i thouhgt to write it here. Punctual + Discipline has what make you are today.

Surely, you must have seen them but your thoughts about blog contents preoccupied you. Whatever you write is becoming ‘lessons’ for your student-fans/devoted lot and we read it with a big “AWE”. Please continue. The Nostalgia about School Days is unforgettable for everyone and FoR YOU especially and when you write it down for us, OH, truly, it is fantastic.

We also humbly want to submit that you should not permit anyone to copy or quote from the blogs unauthorisedly unless there is a written OK from you to do so. Because, there is a possibility of misquoting or giving different interpretation by others causing unnecessary and avoidable friction, etc. Right? Sorry if we are wrong.

    Dear Amitabh Ji,

Those who have not lived in a boarding school cannot imagine the kind of bonds which are created with fellow students and the teachers there. I was fortunate enough to spend my teenage years in a Military Boarding school in Ajmer. The nostalgia takes over at times and the feeling is beyond descriptions.

We ex-students of our Alma Mater have formed internet groups and are constantly in touch with each other. I hope that you are in a similar group of the ex-students of your school.

Amitabh Ji, please take care of your health. You are a very precious asset for us all.

I am sure we will see more aspects of your personality in near future. A poet, an author, a social worker, a teacher, a spiritual leader and many other different variations of Amitabh are going to come before us.

My best wishes are with you.

Wow, I liked your simple blog today, as it removes all the layers of your celebrity status, high power, your incredible fan following, your high profile family members, just about everything to reveal that you are just like me or any one of us. I had similar feelings today as I drove my little one to her kindergarten this morning and thought “What growing pains she’s going through” as she has to stay back at the creche till evening. I had once commented that you should forget defending your self against what reporters write and concentrate on sharing tips about your craft, as we would rather hear more about a legendary actor’s insight and you are doing just that. I think you have now come to a stage where you can speak simple things in life. That’s exactly what we’d like to hear. Thanks for sharing, and please be yourself, more often.

    TAKE LITE, Sir!

Please don’t be too harsh on yourself, and take it all easy…

Much as we want to read your thoughts EVERYDAY, what we want more is some peaceful & leisurely moments for yourself….

So, don’t let this blog thing bog you down. Don’t feel the compulsion to write everyday. And most of all, don’t think that you have to ANSWER all questions put in by us.

On any given day, we’d prefer that you write on any random topic, maybe even continue it for a few days, rather than sit back and answer each and every idiotic & baseless question raised here….

I am really really looking forward to your Sherwood re-union day - even more that the IIFA!!!

I want you to look your crispest best - all suited-booted! And for added elan, sport the Satya Paul tie I presented you in Calcutta!

And post a whole load of pictures of you with your class-mates!!!!!!!!!!

it was insightful to read how a thought , a preoccupation of the mind about a problem turns into a movie. the parallel power centres that come up along a parallel power centre a very interesting idea and also real , for that is how power actually works.” action precedes rationalisation”- vilfredo pareto.
you must be really excited about going back home ………. to sherwood. i come from a similar background………. and long for those carefree days gone in the twinkle of an eye, memories that now seem to fade away before i can even fully relive them .
you must be very excited to go back to your alma-mater, perhaps inevitably visit your dorm, your study look at all that you were once a part of, all that now continues to be a part of you.
to be child again, even if for a moment and to live that moment as if it were eternity.
hope you have a wonderful time in sherwood.

    dear mr.amitabh bachchan,
since u keep mentioning sherwood i would like to share something with u. my sister and i have been very grt fans of yrs since childhood. i remember we were only 9 yrs old when we had hidingly seen yr movie silsila. gosh we had such a huge crush on you. that nite itself we both sat down and wrote a letter to u on an inland(i havent seen one of those in yrs).
yrs passed as we grew up we had crushes on salman khan and aamir and then shahrukh. but we adored u and loved watching yr movies.we used to imagine meeting u and talking with u.
after grade 10 i stayed in lucknow continuing my studies in lamartiniere college but my sister joined sherwood college.
what a high that was . she was very excited to be apart of the same school as yrs . she even became the member of the drama society and eventually she became the captain of the school (year 1994-95).with her name written on the wall. we all were very proud of her. but both of us deep down still shared the dream of meeting u in person.
but fate had other plans my young sister was snatched away at the young age of 22.she had cancer .i would be forever indebted to u if on yr visit to sherwood u would read her name onthe wall and just say a silent prayer for her. i am sure she would be watching from the skies and would be very happy to see you acknowledge her.
her name is GUNJAN GUJRAL. captain sherwood college (yr 1994- 95).infact the school has even instituted an award after her.
i pray to god that u read this
    thank you.

Take a break Mr Bachchan, you need one. Honestly i admire that you’re doing your work and all that , but there is a time when one has to read the message the body’s sending you. if questions like these ‘Dear me ! How will I ever move this 66 year old ruined mass of body !’ come across you mind, its time to take it easy. Honestly speaking i dont enjoy your movies like i used to. You look more like a rag doll these days doing things not coz u enjoy it but just coz you get paid to do it. Take it easy Mr Bachchan, you need rest and it shows. Do some good movies few and far between. You’re a star and will always remain so for the people of my generation (your son and me are just 15 days apart :)). So take it easy. And remember “out of sight , out of mind’ holds true.. but not for you.. you’ll aways remain there.. at the very top… Think about it.

raah pakad tu ek chala chal, pa jayega madhushala”.

It has been so long but I have never forgotten these lines. I think they are soul of the Book. I wish if he was still around, I could have sent him few lines I write for review.

    Dear Sir,

    Salaam & Adaab,

Aapse jawaab to lekar hi rahoonga aur Inshallah aap jawaab denge.

My father had gone to Saudi Arabia in 1955 to work for Saudi Aramco and at that time he was the third man to have gone out to Saudi Arabia to work for Saudi Aramco from Bhopal, upon his return on vacation he had brought a tape recorder with spool and a big mic to record sounds and it also had a radio and people used to come to my house to see it to believe it and people could not believe their ears when they heard their own words coming out from the record player. This is how I have been informed as I was not born yet.

Later while I was in the third grade my father took my mother to perform hajj after having me shifted to a boarding school at Devlali - Barnes school in 1984 and it was my first time away from my mother who along with my father came to drop me at the boarding school, it was frightening as all the people there were strangers and I knew no one but I had some one else with me who was admitted into the school with me but he was in the 8th grade. On the first night at my bed i was crying and missing my family and somehow I slept and woke up in the middle of the night only to see two seniors sitting and eating stuff from the person who was sleeping next to my bed and they told me to go back to sleep or else they would beat me and so I did. Next morning I started writing letters and literally I wrote to every one I knew and begged my father and mother to take me back and the day passed and night arrived soon and we were off to bed and I cried again and finally managed to sleep and woke up again only to find the same two guys eating stuff but this time it was mine and before they could say anything I slept.

Later the guy I was admitted with ran away from the boarding school and was found the same day at night at the Deolali railway station waiting for a train to Bhopal. I was happy to see him the next morning as he was the only one I knew.
Guys there used to love me and treat me as their kid brother as I was very disciplined and used to talk well…….U know like using the words like aap, bhai which were not heard off in the school.

Finally my father and mother also could not stay away from me took me to Saudi with them when I finished my fourth grade.

My mother still cries when she remembers the time she left me there crying and every evening when i come back from work she gives me a hug and is extremely worried that I might have got tired and stuff.

I know if you are reading this must be wondering why have I written all this to you??? I have written all of the above to you especially because I know you too loved your parents too much and cared for them and I too love people who care for their parents and love their parents like their children.

Thik hai sahaab phir, aap aaraam kijiye aur phir kabhi baat hogi Inshallah.

It has been lovely, interesting, distressing, amazing, amusing, enlightening, educational, and very, very inviting!!! It may have been rough for you, but it has been a rare treat for myself.

I look forward to whatever you care to share with us, hints about the upcoming tour (I am very excited about THAT!), your reunion after so many years, absolutely YES on more words from your father, as I have not been able to find anything available yet here, in English. I will continue looking. I am hoping that when we go up to Vancouver, BC before the big TOUR, I will be able to find something there.

Whatever you choose to share with us, respond to our posts, muse about your day, or let loose on an annoyance, is for you to choose! That is the joy of being the owner of the blog! And it is the surprise for us who visit here, to see what you will share next!

  44. Amit says:

    Hello Amitabh ji,

    Greetings.

I was guided to your blog and have read your thoughts over the last 3 days. It is an interesting tapestry you have weaved, and one that is enhanced by your eminent skill of expression.

This post is to integrate three observations that have jumped at me. My intention is to initiate a process that will help you open new doors in your consciousness that can alter the way you have experienced life so far.

Over the last three days, you have talked about “a hidden force that exists, one that we cannot see”; about “power” and about “palace politics.”

I write from the background of the fundamental laws of the Universe that need to be understood. And when you do, your reflections about the three topics will be refreshed and refined, that is a promise.

For, these laws govern our lives moment to moment, thought by thought and emotion by emotion. Strung together, they shape our destiny.

Most of us live out our lives in ignorance of these laws. At best there is a fleeting faint knowing. It’s like trying to play a game not knowing its rules. You grow tired after a point, having had too many things not going your way. And you feel defeated. We enter life, it is given to us. But we know little of what makes it all work. And how the grand scheme of things work.

But we need to know the laws. For, we impact lives of others and we impact the state of the world and of this lovely planet. Most of all, we allow a whole bunch of ‘stuff’ to impact us, when it doesn’t have to.

Would it not be wonderful for you to know that the ‘hidden force’ you speak of is not only not hidden, it can be seen and experienced. It infiltrates every aspect of our lives, in each moment.

How does it work? How does it look? How does it impact our lives? How does one establish a connection with it and be benefited from its benevolence. For this you need very specialized technology. Just as in order to walk on the moon, in order to see the crystals inside a snow-flake you need specialized technology and equipment, the same is needed to gain access to the experience, of this hidden force.

And once you have this experience and once you have seen it, felt it and tasted its nectar inside your very own body, you will know what “Power” is. Because, this force is the power that creates universes. It is most formidable, most amazing and most present.

And once you have understood how this force is at the root of all that is, you will know how this world is a stage on which this force weaves its drama out of itself, for its own delight. You will know that YOU are the star of this drama. And that what you currently consider is your life as AB, who has a family to nurture and a profession to engage in and a reputation to live up to and rights to guard is all really a script that you scripted.

The “Palace Politics” too is a drama, perhaps of another being, who has chosen it to be so.
When you focus on the drama, the scenes are endless, be it Umrao Jaan, Sarkar Raj, JFK or Anwar Sadat. Each contains exquisite details and richness of emotions and thoughts and the like. We love the stories and we recount the scenes with such passion and involvement. Yet, no matter how much you study these dramas of different people, it still is only a drama and no more.

Studying human drama in its variety is like describing each wave that arises in the ocean. Infinite variety, each wave is unique. But, plunge into the ocean and what happens? You find the unity inherent in each wave. Each wave is made of the same ocean.

Inherent in each drama of each being is the ‘hidden force’. It behooves you to know this force, for it provides a context, a meaning and an anchor to the endless drama of human existence. Knowing that power shows you the way out of the maze of life. That force is the central pillar that holds up the Universe.

Understanding of the laws of the Universe will help you deliberately create your life experiences in accordance with the true desires of your heart. You can understand why you have the life you do or the health that you do, or how have some relationships come to be the way they have. And aligned with the force, you can change that which you do not desire in your life.

Once you understand about Source Energy (the force) and through Grace and with practice experience it within you, you will ‘know’ what true “power” is and truly understand Palace Politics at the cosmic level. You will have the know-how to surpass the drama and be the knower.

You are then no longer the puppet whose strings are pulled by destiny and karma. But you are the puller of the strings in your life and you can create a life out of design you choose.

As I said, the technology, the methods & processes to connect with and know the Inner Being exist. One needs to know them and then approach it with the wonder of a child. Becoming aligned with the Inner Being, you create a life of choice and are joyful.

In my work, I call it Life-Design. Absolute Growth - Absolute Joy. I can help you with it. Lemme know if you wish to dialogue this further.

    With respect and affection,

    Amit

i really admire the way you worshipped your parents.People always see the faults but has anybody seen the values you have upheld for the whole generation. In your family aeven aiswarya behaves so traditionally, which must be an inspiration for the young girls who behave so haughtily without achieving even 1% of what Aish has achieved.Today i see that middle class who were earlier called the moral keepers of society, has the most indisciplined youngsters, while all the youth in all big influential families are very disciplined and follow traditions. I think it is a lesson in itself, that discipline is important for success.

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,

    Namashkar!

I have read your writings on the blog every single day so far but it is for the first time that I am replying today. This is because your post today made me nostalgic about my own childhood years. While I have never been to boarding school my best memories of growing up are the times I would curl up with Enid Blyton’s and P.G.Wodehouse’s school series books. I would be transported to the world of life at boarding school, midnight feasts, tricks played on unsuspecting teachers, matches won, half term fun etc. and wishing to be part of it all. Today my daughter who is 12 years old and a voracious reader is going through the same phase.

All of us in the family love watching your films and have seen almost all of them. I am reliving all the great times I have had watching your films since my childhood as now I watch them with my daughter, who incidently loves Chupke Chupke and Amar Akbar Anthony.

It is my dream to meet you at least once but unfortunately that has not happened so far. However my husband realised this dream for me , albeit in a different way on 26th April. He travelled in the same flight as you from Chennai to Mumbai on that day and got your autograph and a photo for me. This has been one of the nicest gifts he has given me for our wedding anniversary over the years.

Sir, your commitment to work is awe-inspiring and not many would be so dedicated at your age. As I tell my own father who is 70 years old and still working, please do not push yourself too hard physically. Keep writing because it is a joy to read your mastery over the English language.

    Regards and best wishes!

Read ur blog 41, the hypothetical situation, very interesting to know, how every character plays an imp role in the life of A, without him knowing their importance, thy might make him, or destroy him, like u said, he may turn into corrupt person in public’s eye without him, moving a thing. But, this mostly happens, like wat the press does to evn actors in our country. Their gossip, may turn into reality for common man. And, its not evn the fault of common man, there is no way for him to know the truth. Had it not been for ur blog, ppl wudnt hav known the real Amitabh Bachchan, just an actor who has mass appeal, had ups n downs n life but nvr wat he feels, his passions, his heart and mind.

Your 42nd post reminded me of my school life, it was fun going down the memory lane, nuthin wud b same ever agn, but it will last forever in our hearts, and the best part is the joy we get in reminiscing those days whn we meet sum1 from that innocent and dreamy part of our life, the gud old school days

your write up on ”palace politics” [story of sarkar raj?] was“good. It shows how to meet the right person[person in position] , even an ordinary telephone operator becomes a prominent person.
I guess, this must be happening only in our country.
Personally too i have experienced this. When i wanted to meet a princpal of a college , the door man there was acting hauty, indirectly asking for money to let me in to meet the principal, but i stood my ground & met the principal without paying any bribe. This happened in an education institute, where we nurture young minds!!

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,

Have fun during your class reunion. I, too, miss my boarding school days. It gave me a lot of opportunities to learn. I had good times, I had bad times. I made mistakes and learned from them. I formed relationships, some of which, to this day, stand strong; others which faded into oblivion. I’m sure you went through a similar experience. Good or bad, they have become lasting memories which when I look back upon, made the whole experience worthwhile.

Last night, I rewatched half of Mahaan (I told my wife to record it, while I was at work). Then I took a short break to go do some grocery shopping. Then I was about to back to Mahaan when I saw Namak Halaal on Star Gold. I love that movie so much!! You were just unbelievable and so hilarious! My wife and I were thoroughly focused on each action of yours that was accompanied by your dialogues, and were in hysterics during each scene. Especially the last scene where you are sitting on the road on a chair with the Late Mr. Satyen Kappu underneath. The effect of that scene on me has been undescribable. You truly seemed invincible, like a superhero. Be it as a child or an adult, the effect will always be the same on me. Better late than never, but I truly wish to thank you and congratulate you on an excellent performance! Sheer brilliance!!!

Good luck with the release of Sarkar Raj!! Looking forward to it impatiently!
