Much before Mr. Ram Gopal Varma made Sarkar, the first one, he and I would meet often to discuss possibilities of working together. Amongst the several ideas that we discussed there was one which I had great fascination for.
It was the subject of palace politics !
It has come up today in my mind because during the many promotional activities we have been doing for the upcoming film Sarkar Raj one of the journalists in the electronic media was desirous of knowing what the word power meant – to me, to others and to the world in general.
Power has always had many interpretations. There is power in politics, in industry, in business, in belief, in our homes, indeed in many aspects of our existence. But the power of ‘palace politics’ was what intrigued me and what prompted RGV and me to put it to creativity.
The ‘Palace’ is here a symbolic metaphor for the central fulcrum, an individual who through his work and stature has achieved a position of eminence; a position that commands respect and following and one that garners almost dictatorial strength.
This then has become the power centre of the establishment he or she heads. Fine.
But this person is also human. They have human attributes, shortcomings, desires, feelings. And in circumstances where they have to deal and conduct themselves democratically for the benefit of the masses that they lead, what would happen if they were to be influenced or affected by feelings and situations created not essentially by the people outside but by those closer home; in the realm of their own domesticity.
And if those that are in its domestic domain have the strength to influence them personally, would the decision then, taken for a larger mass be as democratic and fair as would be expected of them.
Would not this aspect of their conduct create the obvious possibility of intrigue and politics to find admission. And would not this ‘politics’ become an additional ‘politics’ with severe reflections on the larger ‘politics’ being played in the outside world, controlled by the said individual ?
This I believe to be the foundation of ‘palace politics’, a feature that has the potential to become at times, or perhaps most times, the more important ‘politics’ for the leader.
Let me elucidate.
For the sake of argument let us assume a hypothetical situation, where individual ‘A’ has become the leader of a political party, its mentor and its leader through the recognized electoral democratic legal process in prevalence and now heads the nation and its governance. Decisions that ‘A’ takes through his party or through prescribed democratic parliamentary procedures will be followed and shall affect the millions of the nation ‘A’ heads.
What would be his mental frame if before taking said decision ‘A’ were to encounter a domestic problem. A problem perhaps as frivolous as an altercation with the wife on the quality of the food served to him, or one of greater significance where his daughter has decided to entertain her object of desire much against the wishes of the elders, or worse elope with him.
Would individual ‘A’ now obviously in a disturbed frame, be capable and competent enough to allow his mind to still function in as fair and democratic a manner as possible, when he has to address decisions which will affect millions of lives. Would his dictat be now polluted by the happenings in the home and will he have sufficient strength to overcome them. Or would his decision on matters public be overcome by events more personal in nature.
This became a subject of debate and discourse and several interesting permutations arose.
If individual ‘A’ as a human, as the head of his personal domain, is sensitive to and under pressure in, succumbing to matters familial, does this not create a weakness in him to be exploited by the others in the family. And if others in the family have the power to bend him into submission, do they not then become an extra center of power. A power that that can have the capability to affect the life of the nation.
If the daughter or son or daughter-in-law or wife or son-in-law of individual ‘A’ has that potential, then he or she has achieved an even greater power potential than the subject himself. A dangerous and intriguing proposition.
This then is the inner circle of ‘Palace Politics’.
There exists an outer circle as well.
This circle consists of those that work for the individual ‘A’ within the domestic domain. The staff in the kitchen, secretaries, telephone operators, managers, drivers, personal assistants, staff that works within the house. Individual ‘A’ is susceptible to them as well.
If I need to contact ‘A’, how would I go about it. Make a call, talk to the manager the staff, someone in the house. Individual ‘A’, does not pick up his own phone perhaps. How would he have the time and patience to deal with the hundreds of calls that come in daily. So the telephone operator becomes an important post. He will through his personal decision or guided acumen, acknowledge your call and shall decide if it is worthy of responding to or not. He may have been briefed on those he must accept or reject. It is his call then to pass this information to the secretary or the manager to talk to and ascertain the purpose of the caller. It is he then who may decide whether it needs the attention of ‘A’ and the call finally goes through.
There is another aspect to this too.
What if ‘A’ has deputed a member of his immediate family to address most of these calls and sift the good from the bad. A sensible management practice followed by several institutions to leave options open. So in case family member goes wrong there is always the option of ‘A’ moving in to repair.
Here is what can happen. The caller after several attempts at reaching ‘A’ realizes that he is not able to go beyond the few important check points in the ‘palace’ and decides to nurture these individuals for the work he was contacting ‘A’ for. In doing so he is also disclosing to the rest of the world the importance of these individuals in the ‘palace’. Word spreads. Governance takes note.
Individual ‘B’ of the family has the ears and the mind of ‘A’. Point noted and registered very clearly.
I am now a caller. My house has been burgled. The police is not taking sufficient action. I need higher intervention. In general public parlance it is often cynically referred to as ‘divine intervention’. I call up ‘divinity’. And after going through the recognized and accepted procedure end up with ‘Divinity B’. ‘Divinity B’ out of genuine desire to assist personally calls up senior police. Senior police aware of the ‘ears’ of ‘Divinity A’ stands to attention and within hours gets the job done.
Caller is impressed beyond description, NOT with ‘Divinity A’ but with ‘Divinity B’ !!
The initiation of the second seed or seat, which ever you may prefer, of power, has just taken birth by Caesarian Section and christened as well !!
The next call is not for ‘Divinity A’ it is for ‘Divinity B’.
It’s from ‘senior police’ asking for higher promotion !!
Ha..ha !!
The politics of the palace has begun.
Telephone operator, the first point of contact in the ‘divine palace’ becomes an important and useful commodity. Commodity, because those that want access and do not get it will have to corrupt him first. Then corrupt the manager and then ‘Divinity B’. ‘Corruption’ may not be accepted by ‘Divinity B’ or they may declare that this is meant for ‘Divinity A’ and take it.
‘Divinity B’ has without the knowledge of ‘Divinity A’ in turn converted him into a corrupt politician !!
Long Live the King ! Long Live Palace Politics !!
This has been an imaginative hypothetical account of my argument and my subject today. But I believe that the deeper we look into the possibilities of its existence the more exciting and intense it becomes.
This was the preamble that Ram Gopal Varma worked on before he made Sarkar, inspired by Coppola’s Godfather. And this is the possible philosophy he worked on before designing Sarkar Raj into an intense, dramatic and powerful film.
I saw the first trial of the film last night.
I am proud and deeply honored to have been a part of it !
Thank you Ramu !

An extract from the Sunday Times, Bangalore Edition dated June 1 2008, page 1 reads as under :-
†**Abandoned nurse in dire straits
She cared for Amitabh Bachchan in Bangalore
The hands that helped heal Amitabh Bachchan now seek a helping hand. Julie (52) , who spent most of her life home-nursing patients with chronic diseases, has been bedridden for the past two years. She suffers from a debilitating neurological disease, with the possibility of ovarian cancer.
As a nursing trainee at St.Philomena’s Hospital, Julie cared for Amitabh Bachchan who had a near fatal injury during the shooting of Coolie in 1982………………..
This caring nurse now needs a caring home and a nursing hand. She hopes that celebrities and families who she cared for will bear the cost of treatment and help her stand on her feet again.†I want to walk and be independentâ€says Julie.**â€
It’s on the frontpage today and the note beneath this artice reads as - (Julie can be contacted at Humanitarian Hospital on 27828612).( 080-27828612)
I thought I would bring this to your notice ( atleast through your moderator) in case you would feel the need to give a helping hand to this nurse in whatever way you can.

Hi,
I not a big fan of yours. I am big fan of Jaya. But I like you as a person because you are intelligent. You are from a educated family, which shows in your personality. One thing is very very surprising, when your Son was getting married you made is very very private and personal. That was GOOD you have choice to do so. BUT now you are telling small small fine detail about your routine life like flying to so and so country to meet family members at what time.Is not it a private personal stuff to be not told through blog.Risk of security also. While marriage in India is Big Social event, registered marriage is not given that importance as much as normal Indian style Marriage .Now you want to communicate to your fans and media is not with you So you are using this as a media to communicate.Fairly OKay.But telling small small things about your family members is disclosing their like to people making it public WHY? I feel Indian marriage are not so private affair as you made it and these Cannes, USA trip are more private stuff which you are disclosing now.YES your answer will be Democratic country, you can do anything you want BUT.
Anyways I like JAYA aunty, her movies of 1970 are my all time favorite.
Abhishek is so so.
Aishwaray is intelligent like you and is very smart lady. She knows how to act depending on country she is in. She is lady with brain and beauty.
All the best for SARKAR RAJ.
Best Wishes for Happy life to ALL 4 of You.

Dear Amitabh,
I am toot young to call you by name but I still would address you by your first name cuse it feels out of the world to be writing to a legend ..Amitabh Bachchan. I just wanted to express my feeling towards certain things regarding the media in our nation- well, papparazi(hope i got the spelling right) is inevitable today so is terrorism to some extent if I may say so..hence being inevitable doesnot make an aspect right all the time. I sincerely believe that a certain side media has become irresponsible, interfering and least respectful towards people’s privte lives.. since I belong to communication background I would say thats murder of journalism in broad daylight. I just wanted to express that no matter who or what says anything about your religion- your religion is definitely your Own relation with God and no body has ANY right to tread that personal path of yours ..hence be assured that there are people like us who believe in freedom of religion. Cheers and Always stay happy …With lots of love and respect

Its very natural for all humans to be inspired by someone or some people, I wonder who this someone is in your life Mr. Bachchan apart from your father.

My 1st reply to your blog, but hav been ardently following it dayin and dayout
Great to see a senior member of our Indian film Industry using the latest technology in sharing his thoughts and idea about issues and topics that you feel for and also “giving it back” to the socalled critics, or people who have long “bashed” the Bachan name. Now i am sure thats not the reason for you to use this medium, but than it better be known to all that its not easy to say things about people. I am sure this way the world will perceive you in a different way than before. Good or bad thats for time to tell.. but you will definately be known more for the real person you are, than for the characters you display on screen…
Read it today in the gulf news that Abhishekh & Aishwarya were in Dubai meeting people and their new neighbours (Weekend neighbours i presume… what with all the movies they are doing around the world).. Its great to see them buy property in this part of the world.
Since i also stay in Dubai, it would be great to see you all around here on the weekends..
Welcome to Dubai.

Dear Mr. Bachchan,
Are there some problems with the blogs these days? I’ve noticed that a few times you post a blog at a certain time and it doesn’t get posted until many hours later. Also, your entry for today is empty except for “Mehboob Studio, Mumbai May 31, 2008 2:26 pm” followed by “Much before” and that’s it. I posted a response regarding that about 15 minutes ago after which I got the standard message: “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” A few minutes later, my entire post was removed. Also a few days I posted a response which was approved by the moderators and was posted on page 1. After a few hours I checked and either it was moved or deleted because I couldn’t find it. I checked about 7-8 pages and after that I gave up looking for it. That’s why I’m wondering if there are issues with the blog website. Are you aware of any such issues?

Dear Amit ji
This is discrete & clear thought on ‘palace politics’, much of as taken in hypothetical account obvoiusly the role/ path choosen will depend on how influential one thought becomes of circumstances and situations faced by individual @ that very instances.
Though when the faith of million lies behind that one idividual he has to be that in that clear mind-set leaving behind what has gone, mixing professional and personal life wont get him far. Just understnding responsiblities or ponder upon about where he has failed will guide making the decisions.
Reading the first account about familial matters, it do remind me of College days when after taking exams use to think n say hope Professor check it when he/ she in clear mind(shouldn’t have got into fight with his wife) else won’t be awarding great marks ;).
Very much awaiting for the June 6 ‘Sarkar Raj’ making great.
Wish you very best

Sir,
Thnx for sharing such a nice thought……..but don’t u think that the very need of the democratic perliamentary system arose from the need to negate the effect of personal turmoils faced by the leader……..Sir in my small understanding i feel democratic system call for a cumulative decision and not an arbitary one.In this parliamentary system leader ‘A’ cannot be the ultimate seat of power………he is answerable to the parliament primarily……..and to his immidiate collegues. This hypotesis would have been apt for a autocratic system,i doubt……..and i thank god that i doubt, weather this can prevail in india.I am young and not well versed in the theather of life……..I might be wrong but then I strongly belive that a leder can not be that callous in his decision making………with the thought of inplications of his decision when he goes to poll…5 year hence.
You are dead right in you thought of ‘palace politics’…..Members of family or people of near vicinity of a leader acts as separate power concentrations.More often than not leaders re distribute their obligatory dueties to their sons/daughters for the eventual dynestic accesion………what vexes me is the drought of solution……….no matter how much i indulge in deliberation i donot find a acceptable solution………….Sir would u be kind enough to proviode with one.
Never the less best of luck to you for your upcoming film ‘Sarkar Raj’

Dear Sir,
I’m Archana, just one of those billion fans of yours annd it feels great that you’ve joined us on the net and that you will yourself read our letters. But my elder brother, Anurag, is a bigger fan, he is crazy about you an d had written in this space (maybe you’ve read him), please do send one line or two to him (anurag_sagacious@rediffmail.com), he has taught at All Saints, Nainital and visited Sherwood College with pride because it was related to his hero.
As for me sir, you might remember, I wrote about the Mayor of Casterbrige by Thomas Hardy. That it has all the ingredients of a blockbuster Hindi film. I could visualize you as the Mayor and Jaya Bachchan and Aishwarya in other roles. and one of them as SRK. Please do read it Sir. With SRK, I want to make an ernest request. Please sir, please do not give persional comments on others sir. I know that you can never never talk ill of someone especially SRK who you really like and even he has a great respect for you (it is obvious with the intense chemistry you both share) but for the media, you are Sarkar and one word coming out of your mouth is devine so please sir please avoid it.
And please don’t mind SRK potraying your role of Don. He respects you too much to make efforts of superceding you. It is just a film. You are the best Don, even he knows it.
A regret I have this year is that in spite of giving his best Abhishek didn’t an award for Guru, he really deserved it. Hope Sarkar Raj succeeds doing for him, what other films only tried to do. Really Looking forward for it.
And before I forget I believe you and Jayaji celebrate your Wedding Anniversary tomorrow so Wish you both a very very Happy Anniversary in Advance. May you see more Happiness & love in the coming years. Showers of Blessings and beautiful moments that you look back with a Smile (which you always bring on the faces of millions of people). All this just for you.
Best Wishes: - Archana Dass

BANGALORE: The hands that helped heal Amitabh Bachchan now seek a helping hand. Julie (52), who spent most of her life home-nursing patients with chronic diseases, has been bedridden for the past two years. She suffers from a debilitating neurological disease, with the possibility of ovarian cancer.
As a nursing trainee at St Philomena’s Hospital, Julie cared for Amitabh Bachchan who had a near-fatal injury during the shooting of Coolie in 1982. She had also attended to veteran actress B Saroja Devi at the same hospital. Her family, including her unemployed husband and teenage son, survives on the pension of her mother-in-law, a retired nurse from Vani Vilas Hospital.
“Initially, I had pain in the neck which spread to the left hand and in a few days I couldn’t walk. I was treated at Nimhans and Bowring Hospital, but since hospitalisation costs were increasing, I’ve been discharged and have been bedridden for two years. I’d give sponge baths, make the bed and take care of all kinds of chronic and geriatric patients. In fact, I was attending to an 80-year-old cancer patient, when suddenly my hands and legs gave way,” said Julie.
“I have been caring for helpless patients and I understand the difficulty in nursing a bedridden patient. I don’t want to be a burden to my family,” says Julie. She’s been abandoned by the family and now stays at Humanitarian Hospital. Though she has been there for few weeks, doctors are yet to arrive at a diagnosis and start treatment. Since they don’t have her previous medical reports, they suspect a progressive neurological degenerative disease and ovarian cancer.
This caring nurse now needs a caring home and a nursing hand. She hopes that celebrities and families who she had cared for will bear the cost of treatment and help her stand on her feet again. “I want to walk and and be independent,” says Julie.
(Julie can be contacted at Humanitarian Hospital on 27828612)

Hello Amitji,
“Im a big fan of yours… ” I am sure you must have heard this millions and millions of times. But what makes you different from the rest of the so called superstars is your quest for knowledge and the elegnace you brought in to the show biz by being a balanced human being. Earlier I wrote in your blog that you don’t need to worry about the miscreants and unethical media, but now I feel that what you do is the best. Why simply sit and hear everything said and done by a whole lot of ‘Nobody’. As rightly said by Jayaji in one Interview that making a comment or criticising Amitji alone makes a person famous(rather notorious). Who knows the so called critics are doing all these things to get noticed by media. Take care. Convey our regards to your family.
with lots of Love & respect

Hi Mr. Bachchan.
In your last post, you wrote that you never invited media to cover your religious acts. If its true, then you should must apreciate media people that how they got accurate information about your very personal family activities. Its amazing that you went out of your home @ 2 PM with you son and daughter-in-law and entire news channels were waiting out side your home. Please find out those people arround you, who are leaking your family affairs.

Must say was gr8 to see yr powerful acting with Dilipsaab. how did u emote the character of a son so realistically. I liked the last SHOT WHERE U KIND’A GET SHOT BY DILIP SAAB & SLOWLY U DIE IN HIS ARMS. I BROKE DOWN & WEPT, IT WAS SO REAL & POWERFUL.
Impressive storyline & excellent screenplay & display of father-son emotions. How was yr experience wkg. with Yusuf saab. Any memories from SHAKTI, PLS SHARE WITH US.

Dear Amitji,
That was an intriguing read. How one weaves a story around a single thought! I have started writing short stories myself and usually find it is a small incident– some words that touch, a glance that makes your heart lurch, an action that feels like a dagger that went through you heart– and I create characters around it.
Who in your opinion is a good scriptwriter? How important and different is the role of a scriptwriter from that of the story writer?

Dear Amitabhji,
It is virtually impossible to describe how much of an impact you have made on all of us of ‘Indian Origin’ all over the world. It feels as though you are an extended part of my family since I remember watching you, hearing about you and talking about you with awe and admiration at your immense talent and larger than life personality.
I remember seeing you in Satyen Kappu Uncle’s daughter’s wedding when I was merely a child and all my cousins were trying to photograph you!
We live in Bay area, California. My hubby Monish & I love watching every movie of yours (except for Boom..). We admire how you have managed to balance your public image and personal life. It is promising to see Abhishek having so much humility in his personality. Speaks volumes about how you have raised him.
My cousin Mr. Rajesh Gupta from Ahmedabad (he is in bathroom/tile accessories business) visited me here in California. I saw him in more than 10 years and he told me how his childhood dream came true when he was able to meet you and the wonderful experience he had in meeting you at your residence and the level of professionalism in engaging with him for your requirements validate your dignified image in our minds.
Thank you for being you.
If you ever come to California, it will be our pleasure if you visited us.
With Love from Sapna Monish & Saachi

Film HIT HAI i know
May this be the biggest hit of Indian Film Industry til date…if our beloved critics treat it like any KHAN movie.
All Khalidas, Taran Adarshs who thrive on Khan’s mercy should refrain from writing against our BIG B.
Lord Ganesha bless this movie with phenomenal success and extraordinary financial results.

I could n’t never ever imagined that I can any day share something with YOU sir. I have grownup at that time when entire youth was mad about you.We were having our Botany Practical class(year perhaps 1977) when two of the students
suddenly started fighting. The reason was one one of them tried to draw something on the practical notebook of other guy which was having cover outside from the Screen Film newspaper having your photo on it. The guy was shouting like aur bhi kitne actor ki photos thi kisi ko bhi kharaab kar deta main kuch naa kahta par Amitabh ki photo koi kharaab kare yeh main bardasht nahin kar sakta. He was Right.

I think Mr Bachchan is having a technical problem, maybe his blog is not visible due to internet connection and he has to write it up again like last time. It has happened to me before.
Mr Bachchan, I always have to write up my blogs and internet diaries on a word programme (Such as Microsoft word) before I copy and paste it into my blog/diary. My internet connection is terrible, so I don’t take chances. :p
It would be an easier solution for you methinks.
Hope to see your next blog soon, and as always hoping you are well.
Lots of love,
Alia.
