On the sets of ‘Aladin’ again and a song !!
Petrified ! Songs have always been a nightmare for me. But more of that later.
The above stills are from ‘Aladin’. The climax song. The first, at the start of song and the second with all the dirt on the coat, the start of the action.
The story is contemporary but set in a fantasy world of make belief. The dresses are modern or well, seemingly modern but the surroundings and the settings, larger than life and imagined.
My role is that of the genie and yes I will appear at the rub of the lamp to fulfill the three wishes of the one that carries the object of desire.
I had mentioned in one of my earlier blogs that I wanted to talk about the making of ‘Aladin’ and more particularly its technical aspect.
The one feature that you do notice in both the stills is the green backdrop with little red marks on them. These are where digitally images will be filled in later. Green backdrops are used when greater depth or volume is required and when they cannot be physically built. So a minimal construction is set up, actors act around it and imagine that there is a lot more to it. There are photographs on DAY 37(ii) too of another sequence - the genie atop a snow mountain. There is a lot of blue that surrounds the image. This is all cloth where digitally snowy peaks and a large mountain will be filled in. And you would never know the difference. I mean now you would, because you have been told of it, but in general it is seldom noticed.
For actors these days it is getting to be a common phenomenon. Most of us in such extenuating circumstances are made to imagine an invisible presence - a character, a large beast, flowing rivers, anything. A bit impersonal and not quite the required environment when emoting a scene, but that is the future.
We often joke on the set and request the digital supervisor to replace us with our image and carry on the work so we could remain home. But recently the joke turned on us. There is a process in the making where the artist will be required to merely come in for a few minutes and do some basic movements of his body and leave. Science would then be able to construct an image of the actor and the actor need never come on set again.
Frightening !
They would be able to reproduce your form and make it act in your absence too. Even after you are dead and gone movies could be made with you. Er.. your image !
Wonder what the reaction would be of fans. How would they contend with an actors most recent work when the actor has been dead and gone much before the fan was born !
How would film critics review his talent after a release. Would they send a digital or virtual image to a function. A book launch, the opening of a mall. Would the actor write his own blog.
Complicated.
The world moves into a difficult and interesting era. Ever since man stepped on to the moon there has been very little written about its romance in our songs and in our scripts. The moon was an integral part of the films of the 40’s and the 50’s. Science removed it. Would that happen to humans too. With DNA and cloning being vociferously discussed in international forums, would we see several of our samples moving around us.
Better to get back to my song on the set and face that nightmare than this perceived one !
My non digital love for you as ever

Alladin ….and the magic Lamp ????????? Nice ! Ummm …which charecter do you play alladin , the genie ? ? is there a genie ?? (sorry i havent read the entire article just writing about what i think of the photos and the title )

Awsome technique, what surprises me more is that you take deep interest in understanding it and then explaining it to your fans. You know what, I am sure even when you are growing old physically, you are trying to remain mentally sharp. Hope people can learn something from this and try to prevent alzheimers.

Dear Sir,
if I were you, I wouldn’t worry about future possibilities, but about the impact of this role of yours. Even now, many of your fans seem to think that you are a genie and able to fulfill the three wishes of the thousands who write to you in this blog…
The set looks very impressive, even without the digital background.
And now I have a wish.
Only one! I promise!
I’d like to know why songs are a nightmare for you, leaving you “petrified”. This remark just made me very, very curious, since I always admired your dancing…

Great post, these are the things I look forward to when reading your posts and I was very happy to read this one. I look forward to hearing more of your experiences of shooting. In fact, things like this would be something nice to add to the DVD of your films via a commentary feature that has been done for several hindi film DVDs such as Johnny Gaddaar, Heyy Babyy, Fanaa, Bluffmaster, and one or two others. Actually Bluffmaster was the only commentary that the actors were also a part of and it made the DVD so much better. I really look forward to hearing more about the effects in Drona and some of the other effects in Aladin. Looking forward to hearing more about your films and your exeriences on set.

Hello Mr. Bachchan,
Great images - gives a good perspective on the film making process. Amazing how many of us watch movies day in and day out and remain unaware of the amount of effort that goes behind it and the whole technical scenario.
Your ideas about the new process and the ramifications are interesting. Maybe the audience could send in their virtual image to scope out a movie as well before watching it themselves?
Ciao and keep blogging!

Dear Mr. B,
The first photo shows a lot of smoke around your feet, is that a scene where you are shown coming out of a lamp?
Strange you mention computers doing the job of actors. A Hollywood movie was made on the same thought. The movie was called Simone (read Sim One). It stared Al Pacino and I liked the movie a lot. You might want to see the movie now as it will answer many queries raised by you. But if this does happen people will get tired of watching just animations all the time no matter how real they look.

Sir,
It was nice to see a refreshingly ‘light’ blog today!
It’s slightly surprising that you’ve written a long post on such a trivial issue. I won’t be exaggerating too much if I say that seemingly you’re not particularly attached to this topic. And that, when you didn’t have anything to write at all today - you INVENTED this topic! Anyways.
Amitabh sir, although I haven’t seen much of your work on celluloid except for KBC on TV, I’ve come to respect, love and adore you highly recently. blog effect!
I’m a first year MBBS student, taking time out to read you blog daily. You’ve written beautifully lately. BUT
Please don’t disappoint your readers by writing on such a trivial topic. If you don’t have anything important to write about, sir - then please don’t!

That was humourously said,
But I have seen some movies of hollywood where science is
exploring things,
these movies are called science fiction movies.
If you see ‘resident evil’ , ‘Terminator’ , ‘Marix’ , ‘I robot’ and ‘I am legend’ you will come to know the
horrible face of Science.
I am a science student and I can say that in near future science
will cross its limit.
Lets get back to aladin,

You never fail to surprise us with new and different looks, one more handsome than the next. Love you in the hat, coat, and cool sunglasses. Not your typical genie look for sure. I have heard this talk about not needing actors any more-much too frightening for me. Bring me back to the silent and early sound era any day.
It’s hard for me to believe what you said about being petrified of the songs. It always looks as though you are having so much fun-I guess another sign of your great acting skills.
I never thought about what you said concerning the loss of the romance of the moon. But it all makes sense. It also reminds me of when the moon-landing happened, my father woke up my 3-year sister to tell her the news and all she said was “so what”. The moon was also featured in the songs of that era, as in moon-June: many doo-wop ’50’s songs.
Here at work in cable TV, we’ve also gone digital. With all the complications, I’ve heard many an engineer wish we could go back to analog.
Good luck on the songs.
Love,
Rochelle

I think there was one such incident in a holywood movie “Forst Gump” where Tom Hanks shook hands with Kennedy and I think it applied the same digital techniques that you are writing about. The scenario is almost there and its just the question of mastering it. I wonder what would the pay be like for actors then and it must be whooping high for digital experts..ha ha .

Well , Science as it gets advanced can do anything as we keep on moving ahead. But emotions can never be replaced by anything in this world. Emotions are attached to human beings .We may no longer talk on beauty of moon, but when we look up in night in the deep black sky, there is this sparkling white light which may be even for an fraction for seconds, makes us too look at it and gaze at its beauty !
Well, again its said Ignorance is Bliss , but whats the human who wont keep moving ahead !
If science teaches us the practicality and facts in the world, Art and Artists teaches and tells us that love and attachment which only a human being can exude.
We may know Moon has dark spots too, but we also know an art person like Sarat Chandra Chattopadhya , compares the beauty of an woman to an moon ..such metophors will always be alive , coz ART IS EMOTION !
regards,
Vishal.

Dear AmitJi,
For me more than the opportunity to know more about your work and life this blog presents a unique opportunity to get a ‘sons insight’ into one of the greatest poets our subcontinent, Harivansh Rai Bachchan Ji.
The first time I read his ‘Madhushala’, was indeed a life changing moment for me as I am sure was the case for so many other readers as well. Even today through I live far away from home, Bombay, and am a scientist at the University of Virginia the incredible volume of wisdom that his poems carry has hardly changed. Every once in a while I will in random open a page and read something to myself under times of duress or loneliness and almost always his thoughts through his words in their beauty and humor, sensibility and grandeur will move, inspire and revive my very being.
To have said all that in the 1930s and everything he says to be as revelant now as they were then is truly amazing to me. I completely agree with you that your work and the work of many others in the field of arts and sciences will be long forgotten, but BachchanJi’s legacy and work will truly live on forever. As a scientist, I am inspired to compare his breakthrough in thought and verse to something the equivalent of the Watson and Cricks discovery of the structure of DNA, something that has implications to every walk of life and will influence the way people understand and thinks for centuries to come. With time we will have new interpretations for what this discovery means, but the discovery through these new interpretations will continue to live on.
His Madhushala has led to me to his other woks, the trilogy and NishaNimatran of course. Every time I am back home I do try and buy a copy of his works. A lot of my friends have had one gifted to them like I was gifted my copy, in the hope that one day they may discover what lies within.
It was almost the same time as I started reading his works did I myself start writing and am enclosing here with one of the first verses ever wrote (inspired very much by Bacchanjis, Is Paar Priyae Madhu Hai Tum Ho). I would have hoped of putting these together and sending it to you father one day if he was around. This is probably the next best thing!!
Is Paar Uss Paar –
Kisi Din Saagar Kinare Bahithkar Yeh Sooach,
Ke Saagar Ke Uus Paar Bhi Ek Jag Hoga,
Jahan Dum Toditi Khwaishain Na Hogi,
Aur Dil Ki Aaag Paet Main Liye
Jalti, Magar Chalti Zinda Lashain Na Hogi,
Magar Kya Khabar Thi Ke Saagar Ke Uus Paar,
Kisi Ek Kinaare Pe Bhaitha Koi Aur,
Bhi Shaayad Yahi Sooch Raha Hai.
Warm Regards.

Very Interesting post.
Living in NYC ( USA) we are used to digital movies like Star Wars, Iron Man, and the memorable Titanic. Actually my wife and I went to see Narnia: Prince Caspian last weekend.
Never thought that this technology would come to Indian Films but I see lately Sci fi has made its way there as well.
I much prefer the earlier story intensive films such as Naseeb, Amar Akbar Anthony, and Deewar.
Dont know if I want to see my favorite star in unreal fantasy special effect laden pictures. Its not what I have grown up with. Dont get me wrong. I am a big fan of Star Wars and actually one of my favorite trilogies is BACK TO THE FUTURE with Michael J Fox.
But , I like seeing the Romantic song laden films and ” poetic justice ” ( as you have said many times in interviews) in bollywood. Keep Sci Fi with George Lucas………Bollywood stick to what you do best……….tear jerkers and emotions…..and good scripts ( the old days)
PS….Mr. B. Big Fan of yours…..have met you a few times in NYC………hope to meet again at some point.

I’m so glad to see the technology being implemented in Hindi cinema, in some ways, other ways I can understand that the “being there” in the moment is integral to the actor! Movies like Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson however have seemingly raised the bar on digital movie-making. The character Smeagol is exactly how you described with the human actor only being used for movement and interaction with other actors, the creature is all digital and it is amazing to watch how seamlessly he is blended with the digital and real surrounding! But I can only imagine the difficultly it presents to the actors!! Thank you for sharing! It is definitely food for thought!

being of of oyur geratest fans, i obviously have been reading you and about you extensively, i always get the impression that u have a amazing and naughty sense of humour, but in being tooooooooooooo diplomatic, it does not get full utterance.

Dear Amitji,
Its nice that you are sharing your work with us before its released. Its intresting note on how digital effects are changing the world of Cinema. This should help in speeding the entire process of filmmaking and also enable directors and actors to present what they want to present. I doubt if Digital avatars will ever be able to replace Indivuals STAR’s acting capability. The emotion, the class, the dialogue delivery, the expression and the slight mistakes or im perfections that truely identifies oneself will really need something out of this world.
One Mr.James Cameron has been trying this for over a decade now a movie called Avatar where all the actors a Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). its yet to see its daylight. Hence I believe we will be able to enjoy orginal acting for quite sometime ;).
Good night. Lots of Love

Amazing, scarry tough that science will create actors. Anyways before virtual world becomes a 100% reality in cinema, we your fans feel blessed to be living in an era where we get to see the real you on screen. Wonder if the digitally created images can replace the angry Agnipath or the intense romantic Amitabh Bachchan of Silsila or can it recreate the perfect comic roles you had performed in numerous movies for us? No chance!
But one thing i am sure they will surely have a library where your method of enacting different scenes will be applied as a formula to get the right emotion. Waiting to see Aladin last week saw Bhoothnath, you were great but not the script unfortuantely. Probably the director dint know what exactly to do with a great performer like you …. lol (his loss not your’s)

Fascinating!!!.. how theuture wud unfold.

Dear Amitji,
Thank you for sharing some scenes from the sets of Aladin. As digital imagery becomes more advanced, no doubt it will be easy to replace a lot of human components in the film. But I strongly believe that it will be impossible to ever replace the emotion that is conveyed by the human face. The penetrating intensity of the eye, the expressions of sadness and quiet contentment, all of these touch an audience only when it is conveyed by flesh and blood actors.
The more things change, the more they remain the same. Technology may razzle and dazzle the audiences for some time. But ultimately, we will all yearn to come back to the cinema to witness the grandeur of human drama in Mughal-e-Azaam and Ben-Hur or journey with yourself and Rajesh Khanna in “Anand”. Technology will always remain a tool, wielded by a competent director and ready to serve a strong script and strong actors.
Best wishes and looking forward to reading your next post.

Sir…..this again looks fantastic flick!! Whoz the director?
Without any Jaadu ka Chiraag atleast one earnest desire of trillions has come true….i.e to be able to interact with you……..
Infact writing on this blog makes me feel lighter, expressing thoughts, sharing views regardless of any of them being acknowledged, and frankly speaking sir we all don’t expect you to be able to recognise each of us and address personally,,its herculian!!!
But now looking at you working with so much dedication makes us all believe in greek mythology…….yes there can be some people who can do their duty/task despite of any odds!!!
God Bless you Sir!!!!!!!!!!

Frightning indeed.
but that wont be the same actor on screen. It would be a cold image of someone that was full of life, warmth, emotion and sweet memories. That digital image wont have the same fans that the real actor had nor the fan’s pation and devotion.
Don’t worry Mr. Bachchan. No computer generated image will ever take your place. Not now, and not in a million years.

Why is digitization frightening. It means more money for the superstars. Then you can behave like businessmen / investors. Managing each project as a company owner, running through the Board of directors and returning to collect money !
Infact since none of yhour time will be involved you may choose not to release a movie until you are satisfied that it would be hit; you would only need to spend time reviewing it. Or better still, you can appoint a board of reviews to do that.
So rejoice and not fear, because the future belongs to imagination and you guys are kings of the virtual!!!!

Ah, the wonders of green-screening
Although it is an amazing innovation, I have to wonder where one draws the line after which nothing ‘real’ is ever required to make a movie - no actors, no real locations, etc. Thanks to the digital revolution, with a good computer and the right software, you can make a film without getting off your couch! Not sure if you’ve ever seen ‘Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow’, but that was filmed entirely with actors in front of green-screens. Ditto with last year’s ‘300′. And it’s funny that you’d joke about the actor being completely replaced by a digital reproduction of him/herself. ‘Beowulf’, which came out around Christmas last year, does exactly that. The actors had to provide some basic movements and reference points for the digital imaging, and, of course, their voice-overs. But other than that, it was all CGI. Definitely interesting stuff

hello Amit sir
fascinating!!!!
Thanks for this technical information. hmm, to me it seems difficult to act around smething which one has to just imagine :-))) dats really need sme experience or may be the technical expert teach u exactly where to imagine……..still i feel it wud appear funny seeing actors act like dat on sets….cinema making is quite a creative wrk to do…so many aspect, numerous ideas……n efforts of so many….if itsnt well integrated and crafted we just reject it outright he he he he he he:-) now i kno how it might feel to the person who designed the whole concept of that film.
to have so fanciful jinnie wud be worth watching if the sory is as good as ur appearance in this movie. How do u able to cope with so much makeup to get into the character…how tiresome……reading ur blogs wud definitly wud make me appreciate cinema more than ever before.
as for future becoming more digitalized…..well nothing cud take away the originality but it is just slipping away frm us and we wud never realize when it got replaced…..
According to Baudrillard, we as a society have become disillusioned with the everyday lives we lead. Therefore, we feel the need to fabricate an escape; to build a world so perfect that it seems better than real. We use many different methods to create this escape: theme parks, movies, and nostalgia among others. These become our reality. Thus, the created becomes more “real†than the actual. We who inhabit this hyperreality are obsessed with timelessness, perfection, and objectification of the self. Anything less is not worthy of our effort as a culture. Therefore, we strive to create and maintain hyperreality. Because of this fake reality that we have created, authenticity has been replaced by a copy…..if this continues….yeah there wud definitely be a day when we wud have all digitalized actors :-))) wat critics wud do is comment on who is better in creating the unreal closest to real…….they wud talk abt the technicians of a fil rather than actors and the focus wud shift frm actors to the one behind the scenes :-)) scary for actors indeed!!!
well a non digitized love to you too but in digitized format
warm regards

Amit Sir,
Nice pics.
we should have no worries about images replacing real actors. its not gonna happen and if it happens then it will be a fluke like 3-d films, special effects etc.
Humanbeing is quite selfish species and this effort of replacing alive humanbeing by his images will not succeed. if it was true then people were not going to be sad ever since the invention of video camera as it has made possible to preserve motion photos of a person and even if he is dead his family can see his motion pictures. but we know films cant replace the real person and his family feel absence of deceased people.
is it not possible to replicate digitally paintings of old masters but who cares for artificial creations?
word original has some significant meaning. thats why copy cats dont earn reputation of original thinkers and creators. mimicry artists dont earn name like original artists earn.
films like Artificial intelligence are fine in a certain time periof and for a one time viewing only as later they become extremely boring.
Human emotions have no replacements.

k

Mr.Bachchan,
Why are you exposing your upcoming movie production stills having graphics,i think you are drowning the feel for excitment of those graphics scenes which will be shown in the completed film of yours.if everybody knows how it is shot even before the completion of movie ,what happens to expectations of graphics in the movie.if they have to be stunning ,the making should be suspense ,to amaze the audience.you could put some normal stills but not these kind of production stills where the secret of graphics lies.I hope you would understand as a movie maker.even till now some of the movie-making secrets of GONE WITH THE WIND and William Wyler’s BENHURN,Ten Commandments are not out ,and still amazes the audience and also the film makers.Innocense is bliss of life.
