Mumbai, On set for ‘ALADIN’,            May 21, 2008              6:04 pm

Back home !

And straight on to the sets from the airport !

I had expressed a desire to talk about our Cannes visit. I shall.

I also have comments to make on some editorials that came out prominently in the leading papers.

And, I want to mention to Pearl, one of the hundreds that write in to me, sorry for missing your name out !

For now a reproduction of a recent interview with the Telegraph from Kolkata and then later at night shall write on other issues -

my love as always -

1. Your blog has been covered, reviewed and written about extensively. Whatever you write in the blog is becoming “news” in print and on TV channels. Do you think, like Aamir Khan says, you do not need to talk to the press separately anymore?

ANS: I am surprised and intrigued by your observation. I have been travelling out of the country for some time and am unaware of print and TV channel reviews. But its interesting to know from you on the interest on my blog. I have not read or heard Aamir’s remark, but as you can observe, by responding to your questionnaire I have not paid heed to it !

2. Blogging for most is a very personal medium but Indian film actors have used it as a public medium to clarify his or her stands. What has your experience been like? Is it close to writing a diary or is it more a public rejoinder to accusations?

ANS: I have yet to find a definition for the blog or a blog or just blog. It is an intriguing word and I doubt if it would matter what it meant to those that use it. There are no rules for it, so I would imagine it is a medium where an individual has the opportunity to express himself and through that to others as well. If the process is being looked upon as a document of personal thoughts or as a vehicle for clarification and rejoinder so be it. I think for celebrities or those in the public sphere who sometimes desire a method for response this could be the answer.

3. Your usage of English and your writing style are truly praiseworthy. Have you ever thought of writing fiction or memoirs in the language?

ANS: My language and its usage is very pedantic and not worthy of praise at all. You embarrass me by this observation and no I have not thought of writing fiction or my memoirs.

4. Has the response to your posts brought to light anything new about your fans? What is your response to their response to your posts?

ANS: Yes it has. It has brought to light that they have a deeper perception of our profession and our character than we imagine. That they are extremely intelligent and conscious of their bearings. That their affection and love is spontaneous and exuberant and the reason for our existence. That their criticism and abuse at times needs careful consideration, for they are able to see and observe what we may not have and that it is the most joyful experience to connect with them first hand.

5. You son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya have become global faces and have been the only movie stars from India on the Cannes red carpet. How does that make you feel?

ANS: I am not so sure of that. We are all here on a private visit. Aishwarya is brand ambassador for L’Oreal which is one of the sponsors for the Cannes Film Festival, so her participation in the festival activities is part of her contractual obligations. The rest of the family is here to be with her in her moment. The family has been spread all over different parts of the world for some time due to our schedules and we decided to meet up here. Aishwarya is a popular face in France and it is a very proud moment for all of us to witness the respect and honour that is accorded to her.

6. You have poured your heart out in your blog about things that have bothered you, about certain people’s actions and words. If you didn’t have the blogging medium would you have been able to express your hurt in some way?

ANS: I cannot say. It is quite possible that I may have kept that inside of me and allowed it to dissolve or fester. But now that there is a viable medium I am happy to be able to express myself.

7. Would have life been any different had things like blogging been around 20-30 years back because with you boycotting the media at that time none of your fans could hear your viewpoints on anything?

ANS: That is an interesting and valuable observation. The media boycotting me and vice versa did erase the opportunity of any documentation or record of events that may have happened in my professional career. I cannot say whether that held any importance at all. Media is the only credible source of any record for posterity other than official documentation by recognised sources. I do not think that media felt it necessary to keep on record what went on in my film or personal life, during the time of the ban. And quite frankly they were not wrong. But I would like to believe that fans love and appreciate your work on film and so long as that was in order, other aspects did not matter. So thank god for the films and their presence, for they kept me alive so to say in the minds of the people.

8. Has there been any pressure on you to use your new love for blogging commercially to promote your films?

ANS: No there hasn’t. But I talk about my films and my roles and my daily activities connected with them and at times putting up photographs and other material. If that helps in the promotion of the film then good.

9. What are the plans with your upcoming website? What features are you planning to include in it?

ANS: Plans are under construction for the website and it should be up shortly. It will have the presence of all members of the family, most particularly my father and his prolific work. I believe it would also invite comment from those not in the family as well, if we feel and consider it to be of value. It shall be a gradual process and we would love for any tips or suggestions on it.

10. Finally, Sarkar Raj is round the corner. How was it shooting with the family? Having shot for the film and perhaps seen it, do you think it can live up to the expectations from a Sarkar sequel?

ANS: Yes Sarkar Raj is due on the 6th of June and the experience has been wonderful. All three of us in front of the camera at the same time has been joyful and exciting. I will be seeing the final copy in a few days so I cannot comment on it yet, but yes we always expect the best to happen with all our products and Sarkar Raj is no exception.

    Dear Amit ji
I am writing from US. You have been the greatest inspirational figure for me ever since I remember, nobody can ever take your place, never.
You, your personality, your biggest asset…acting have all been inspiring.
Read your post about days in Sherwood and your fathers quote. It really touched my heart and I would not forget to preach it to my daughter as I believe firmly in one such myself ”Whatever happens….happens for good and only good can happen to me”

Love Abhishek’s work too, it is quite appreciable the way he made his stand in the industry and the wonderful peformances he is delivering. It no turning back after Yuva, I guess.

Ash as usual is talented and beautiful, a gem added to your family.

With no offence I do want to say one thing….It would feel more nice to see Jayaji and you standing together in any and all public gatherings rather than always at a distance with someone or the other in the middle. You both make a great couple and be it always that way. I know Abhi, Ash and Amar Singh are all family but Jayaji has her own stand.

Last but not the least, it is my desire to at least see you once (meeting is a dream), I do not know when that is going to happen and even if it is going to. Time will tell. Hope I can make it in this life of mine. I did dream a crazy thing once….you actually paid a visit to us here in the US. Crazy indeed.

    Love Always.

  4. Rajesh K. Sharma says:

    Dear Taa Bachchan,

This is what my son used to call you when he was 3 years old. He’s five now and I still tease him about it. You are still his favorite actor. I hope you had a great time in Cannes. This is my 4th letter that I’m posting in your blog and there will be many more. I’m 38 years old and every time I go the Naz 8 Cinema to see your latest flick (here in Northern California) I feel like a kid. I remember when I was just 7 years old when my mammaji (God rest his soul) took me to see Mr. Natwarlal in India. I’ve been a fan since! I’ve seen everything you’ve done, regardless of how good or bad the content was. There were always one or two memorable scenes in your movies that I took home after watching your films. My son loves your death scene from Sholay, where you have a shootout at the bridge with the daaku’s. I also love that entire 5-7 minute scene as well.

Here are some of my favorite scenes from your films. This should take you back to memory lane…

    1) Deewaar – When Iftekar is offering you a job and you’re looking out the window and thinking of your Mother walking on the street with two small kids. I love that scene.

    2) Deewaar – When you are left alone standing there after your brother and mother leave you. The way you tear up that building contract into pieces, it showed both your pain and disappointment in a fraction of a second.

    3) Satte Pe Satta – Your Babu character still brings a cold chill down my spine. What I liked most was his calmness and the quietness which made him even more frightening.

    4) Sharabi – The hospital scene when Munshiji is dying. This scene was so natural and I believe it was shot without being dubbed because you can hear the camera reel in the background. I just love that entire scene.

    5) Muqaddar Ka Sikandar – At the graveyard when you bring Zora to the Fakir Baba and ask him what you should do now.

    6) Kabhi Kabhe – When you are explaining to Shashi Kapoor about your sacrifice.

    7) Zanjeer – Police Station scene with Pranji. Also the restaurant scene with Ajit saab when you are revealing your true identity to him.

    8) Agneepath – When you tell Mithun to take Neelam home and the way you beat the crap out of that ex boss of yours. I also love the scene when you over for a dinner at your mother’s house only to leave with disappointed.

    9) Parwana – The scene where you are killing Om Prakashji with a scarf.

    10) Black – When you and Rani are dancing in the hospital when she shows you her degree.

    11) Shakti – After Dilip Saab shoots you and you reveal your true feeling to your father. This scene makes me cry like a baby every time I see it.

    12) Trishul – When you slap Prem Chopra Saab when he insults your father, played by the late Hari Bhai.

    13) Adalat – This small scene when you come home after your head injury and you stare at the “Bagwaan’s” murti and you punch the shelf in anger after all that’s happened to you in the film. Another scene is when you wife asks you, “Aap kaha ja rahe hai” and you tell her, “Radha, hum ka karat hai, kyun karat hai, yeh aaj ke baad humse met poochna, kyun ki baar baar humse jhoot nahin bool sakte.” Another scene from the film I like is when you are being released from the prison and the three villains approach you and ask you to forget about the whole thing and you tell them, “Meri Bhaan, mera bacha mejhe wapis kardo.”

I can go on and on forever, since you have so many wonderful scenes. I just wanted to share this with you, Sir.

Your best work as an Actor:
    1) Zanjeer
    2) Majboor
    3) Deewaar
    4) Abhimaan
    5) Kabhi Kabhe
    6) Parwana
    7) Bemisal
    8) The unforgettable “Babu” character from Satte Pe Satta
    9) Main Azaad Hoon
    10) A few selective scenes from Agneepath, but you were clearing borrowing Al Pacino’s body language from “Scarface” and Brando’s voice from “The Godfather” in the film.
    11) Black

Your worst roles as an actor that I’d like to forget:
    1) Pukar
    2) Mahaan
    3) Ajooba
    4) Toofan
    5) Jaadugar
    6) Lal Baadshah
    7) Boom
    8) Aks – Here you were copying Al Pacino from “The Devil’s Advocate” using Al’s trademark laughter.
    9) Nishabd
    10) RVG Ki Aag
    11) Ek Ajnabee
    12) Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna
    13) Mrityudaata
    14) Family –Ties of Blood
    15) Akayla – Here you were mostly copying Clint Eastwood from “Dirty Harry”
Please don’t take this to heart because, “Jo Mard hota hai, use dard nahin hota”.

You should be extremely selective when choosing your projects. It’s not like your doing 10-15 films at a time. You are doing maybe 2-3 films a year, so you should be very selective. It’s your best roles that have made you who you are today. Your selection process shows that most of the roles that you’ve selected were based on friendship-sake and with best of intentions, but the audiences are not forgiving and understanding.

Today’s audience’s are exposed to infinite resources and cannot be taken for granted. Audience response always speaks the truth, no matter how much an actor, writer, or a director makes an attempt to justify and express their true attentions of a particular film. What people see on screen is ultimately the truth, nothing more.

This is why actor’s like SRK, Akshay Kumar, Amir, and Sanjay Dutt are advancing in there careers. You’ve got to think twice before choosing a role. Speaking of roles, I hope to see you as “Kadar Bhai” from the “Shantaram” novel. Is that still on? I understand that it got postponed because of that writer’s strike in Hollywood. Playing this particular role will introduce you to the Western audience in a big way. Who knows, you could be up for an Oscar for “best supporting actor in a leading role” category if you play the part just right; in you’re most natural way of acting without trying too hard.

I grew up in the U.S. and have seen thousands of films from Hollywood over the years and there are several actors here that are just as brilliant: Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Brando, Morgan Freeman, Clint Eastwood (both as an actor and a director) Sidney Poitier, Gene Hackman, and Denzel Washington to name a few of my favorites. I have been enjoying these guys work for years and counting.

    So please, Sir, be choosy.

Sir, as I’ve mentioned in my previous postings, I have a screenplay, which will be quite interesting to you. I’ve completed it last year and now I’m in the process of refining it. It has been specifically written for you, Abhi, and Sanjay Dutt in mind. It is a nail-biting thriller that will captivate all audiences throughout the world. People will remember your Babu character from Satte Pe Satta.

This is something that you’ve never done before. Also, this script will do for Abhi what Zanjeer did for you. He’s a great surprise in this script. The script is written in a parallel format. It’s like watching two films in one. At this time I cannot give specific details since I still need to send it out for a copy-write upon completion of my final draft. This is something that I would like to present to you. Rumor has it that you are reviving your AB Corp. Perhaps this script might be of interest to you in that manner.

Here is my contact information if this interests you:
    Name: Rajesh Kumar Sharma
    Email: 2rajsharma@gmail.com
I did not want to post my phone number just yet.

I love movies so much that I self-taught myself on how to write screenplays, based on books by Sid Fields. I have been writing for quite some time. I’m a working professional by day and a screenwriter by night. I also have original works that I have written for Hollywood which can easily be turned around to suit the Indian Film Industry. I also despise the word, “Bollywood” which makes no sense what so ever. Since Bombai is now called, “Mumbai” now, so what are they going to do…call it Mollywood?

Would it be possible for me to obtain your contact information as well? Perhaps your office number, email, cell phone, and/or a mailing address?

Your interview with the following observation is real great
“That their criticism and abuse at times needs careful consideration, for they are able to see and observe what we may not have”.
Each one of us think we are right in what we do. At times if we have the intelligence to see others point of view, we may find, we were after all wrong. This always helps us to become better.

    QUESTION:
    Hello Sir,

    I have 1 doubt.

What all parameters are considered while adjudging a film or director as best in their respective categories during an awards ceremony?

I was thinking that if a film gets best film award then its director should automatically get the best director award. But as we all know, it is not case. So, can you please enlighten me and others about this process?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes your command on language be it english or hindi or urdu it is brilliant. In your early years as an actor your command on urdu was brilliant as you are from Illahbaad, then we heard your hindi which was to an extent that it was difficult to understand many words. And now we see your command in english it is excellent. Well, God has gifted you to with a karma that what ever you do or say is ALMOST to perfection. I say this because no one is perfect.

    My dear Amitabh ji,
Recently I read somewhere that around 150 films nowadays in your hand, is it correct? If so, I would like to greet you only one one thing that you may please select a few of your real choice from all that. You have gave us ost of hit and successful meaningful films in the past (before one decade). Being a supreme fan of your acting, I like you much as you a romantic as well as a action hero, i.e. the one and only angry young man. Now, we could not hope for such films which you have done in 80s-90s; however we was lucky to get you very much impressive in Baghban, Black and a few more.
I wish and hope, that your superhit film with your supreme apearance roll is still awating.. It is likely to be kidding for me to say that it will be hard that one would be among from 150. But I sincerely hope that if we find you: the super megastar from your forthcoming list, we cheer a lot.
There is no alternate of your voice, action, and of course the personality in the industry… before, now and the years to come.
    I WISH YOU EVERY SUCCESS.

But my eyes were moist after watching the scene in Bhoothnath where you say “mujhe dekhne do… Jee bharkhe dekhne do”). I somehow felt very sad.. My wife is making fun of me because i dont cry even for the saddest scenes…. saying that only Mr. Bachchan can do it to me :-)

  48. AASHIAAMER says:

    Dear Sir,
Have been reading your blogs almost everyday. At times with a doubt in mind and at times with total faith. Quite contradictory, but that is the way I have been (everyone who knows me keep saying that about me). Well, doubt at times that are you really writing it and at times with the faith that yes a person like you who has to carry on the legacy of someone like late Sri Harivansharai Bachan cannot play with the emotions of so many people who idolize, worship, love, praise and at times also hate you.

After reading today’s blog and having found my name in the list of people who come close to you, make me feel on the top of the world not for the reason that you have mentioned my name, but for the fact that my thoughts were able to reach to you and I communicated to you what I wanted to.

There are numerous moments in life, where you feel the pinch of not expressing your inner most feelings to your loved ones and there are also numerous moments in life where you feel the pinch of not being able to pass on a thought to someone who has touched your life in ways beyond expression. And that was the reason that had forced me to post my first comment on your blog and today is my second comment on this blog, to thank you for having the time to read my blog and also acknowledging that it is close to your heart.

I communicated my thoughts to you and it was read by you and I am happy with that. As it is very important for any human being to know that their words are listened by someone whom they love and adore.

I guess I have become a little nostalgic and emotional today, but just want to thank you for letting me know that you appreciate our presence in your life and this is really not a gimmick.

Looking forward to the release of Sarkar Raj.

Another fact that I wanted to mention is that , you and my father share the same month and year of birthday so I tend to somehow unknowingly put you on that pedestal as that of my father and love the fact that you are as protective about your family as is my father and that Abhishek(your little B) shares the same relationship with you as I do with my father.

I dont know what am I writing in this blog today, but at times you just tend to forget everything when you find a connection point and you let yourself loose. That is what I am doing today.

Have a good night sleep, take care of your health. Lots of love to your family

And want you to know that your Father’s Poems have been a steadfast rock in my life and its interpretations have made me face tough situations in my life with a deeper understanding of life and at times just given me solace that my thoughts that I cannot express so clearly have been put forth by someone in the most apt way, as if we both have been experiencing similar situations in life. I would always like to know you as his son who tends to happen to be the Best in his profession and has been working sincerely at his job.

    Take care,
    AASHIAAMER

    Dearest Amitji,

One of your ardent fans since the ‘ Zanjeer’ days. Followed your illustrious career very closely. In my view you are one of the very few best actors this world has ever seen.

Welcome back to Mumbai. Your energy is amazing. Straight to work from Airport ! Kindly take care of your health and take it easy. Please do not exert yourself too much.

‘ Sarkar Raj’ Pictures are just superb. Waiting eagerly for the film. It will be a treat to see you, Abhishek & Mrs. Aishwarya B together again. May the movie does well for all concerned, more so for Mr. Ramgopal Verma who has been criticized very badly after ‘AAG’. He is a great director without doubt and needs that one successful film to boost his confidence.

Can you please tell us something about ‘ The Last Lear’ ? And your long in the making film ‘ Zamaanat’. Why it is delayed so much. Perhaps you can help your old friend Mr. Ramanathan in case he is in trouble over something and ensure its early release. You have given so much of your time to this movie. Also, it will be great to see you work with Ms. Vijayashanti.

May God Bless you and your family.

    Hi

This is just to say that I am great fan of Aishwarya. She truly is the most beautiful woman in the world. And whenever I see her on television or on big screen, I feel that inspite of being so beautiful (I think she is the most beautiful woman India has ever had and will ever have, though her looks are not Indian, I feel her looks are more universal, Priyanka Chopra I consider as an Indian beauty, anyways.. Aishwarya is great) she is so down to earth and is extremely graceful. I like the way that she answers in her interviews she seems very deliberate and thinks before she speaks and never gets impulsive or impatient. I have immense respect for her, and I feel she is much more a beautiful person inside than she is outside.

Here is something I would like to share wuth you about Prosperity of the Human World, Exaltation of Man, Eternal Life and Heavenly Honor written by Abdu’l-Baha
“The honor and exaltation of man must be something more than material riches. Material comforts are only a branch, but the root of the exaltation of man is the good attributes and virtues which are the adornments of his reality. These are the divine appearances, the heavenly bounties, the sublime emotions, the love and knowledge of God; universal wisdom, intellectual perception, scientific discoveries, justice, equity, truthfulness, benevolence, natural courage and innate fortitude; the respect for rights and the keeping of agreements and covenants; rectitude in all circumstances; serving the truth under all conditions; the sacrifice of one’s life for the good of all people; kindness and esteem for all nations; obedience to the teachings of God; service in the Divine Kingdom; the guidance of the people, and the education of the nations and races. This is the prosperity of the human world! This is the exaltation of man in the world! This is eternal life and heavenly honor!”.

Thank you for listing my name in the tabulation you did. That makes me feel that you have seen my name but could not respond to my querries. It is okay. I can understand how challenging the task is. I am happy that you are expression your thoughts on a daily basis and that makes a good day.

As per your blog, you seem to be very very busy and trying to fulfil all the assignments you have at hand. Hope it is not having any bad affect on your health and you are hale and in high spirits.

Sarkar Raj movie looks very promising. I had a chance to see the proms and the pics you posted here. I am expecting a VERY INTENSE MOVIE. I am yet to see your movie Bhoothnath because the place I live in USA has not lot of Indians and responsible parties could not screen it in a theatre. I have seen pirated CD’s or DVD’s in some Indian grocery stores but do no want to rent them because they are of bad quality and I wish to see Bhoothnath on a quality DVD because I have heard and read that Bhootnath is a quality movie. So waiting for it’s DVD release. Hopefully it will be out soon.
The place I live here in USA has all the recently released movies pirated or have been downloaded from some website and its copies are available to everyone. I know piracy is a big problem and all actors are against it. But I do not know how much effort those actors put in to stop piracy. There are websites which upload movies a day after its release and a person has to pay a little penny to download it and circulate it around.

It would be interesting if you take some action against those websites who upload movies on Friday itself when infact it was released on Friday all over India and abroad. What do you think one can do to stop it. In USA, almost every small grocery store carries a downloaded version of just released movies and I am sure that makes a dent in the movie business.

Anyway, looking forward to Sarkar Raj and I am sure I will see lot of downloaded CD’s or DVD’s at any Indian grocery store. But I will not see it as I want quality product.

    Sir,
Amongst many of the personalities in the Indian film industry like Mammotty, Mohanlal,Kamal Hassan, I have always placed you on a very high pedestal . I am an ardent fan of yours as far as my memories can go. When I happened to notice about your blogs in leading dailies, I initially was not willing to digest that it is you, who is actually posting these inspite of such busy schedules. When I went through the various archives here, I am now convinced about it and as a start i thought it best to wish you “Good Luck ” for your forthcoming movie. I happened to watch your earlier movie Sarkar and was impressed by the easiness with which you portrayed the character. Another role worth a mention here, among the movies during the past couple of years is your role in the movie “Black”. I was deeply moved and simultaneously impressed by the method in which you had handled the role. Hats off to you, Amitji. I feel proud to be living this life during your time.
Looking forward for having some good discussions regarding variety of topics about the backstage of the Film industry of which you have been a part for this long time.

    Hi Mr. Bachchan,

Thank you so much for mentioning my name in your Day 33 post, that was so cool!! I noticed that you got some comments from people who don’t think they were mentioned. But maybe they were, and didn’t see it.

For instance Pearl, who you mention in this post, Day 34. Hi Pearl!, if you see this comment, Mr. Bachchan did mention the name Pearl in the Day 33 post. [smile] I found that name in his list. Unless he added it later, or that’s a different Pearl???, the name is there. There are so many names, I know it’s a lot to go through for everyone to try to find their names.

The way that I found my own name is through using the features of my Internet Explorer browser. For others using the same, if you click on *Edit* at the top of the browser page, you get an option to *Find* your name on the Day 33 page. This is how I found my own name on the list. Or, you can click your *Ctrl* key on your keyboard, along with the *F* key, and you will get the option to *Find* your name.

I only know how Internet Explorer or my keyboard work for this, but I would hope that those using other means also have some options for something similar to the *Find* feature, that they may be unaware of. So for anyone who happens to read this comment, and doesn’t think they were mentioned on Day 33, check it out again. Maybe you were!
